The book ‘Qushairi’s Epistle on Sufism’ (الرسالة القشيرية في علم التصوف) is a treatise on Islamic Sufism. The book answers many questions that had been raised about Sufism during his lifetime. At many places in his book, he acknowledges his indebtedness to his Shaikh Al-Dabbaq who was instrumental in explaining him facts about Sufism. Shaikh has provided brief biographies of many earlier Shuyookh of Ihsan in this book, established basic Sufi terminology and explained the benefits of Sufi practices in everyday life. The book has been used by many Shuyookh after him as a standard of Sufi practices. This book has been rendered into English by Shaikh Mir Asedullah Quadri for the benefit of English readers. It is an interesting book for all those who are interested in Islamic Sufism.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Shaikh Abdul Karim bin Huazan Al-Qushairi – (986-1072) (عبد الكريم بن هوازن القشيري) was an Arab Muslim scholar and theologian famous for his works on Sufism. He was born in 986 CE in Nishapur, Khorasan, Iran. He studied in Nishapur under his Shaikh Abu Ali al-Daqqaq. Later he traveled to Baghdad where he was benefited from the patronage of Nizam-ul-Mulk, the Minister of the Caliph at that time. Shaikh Ghazali (1058-1111) was 14 years younger than Shaikh Qushairi who was also benefitted from the patronage of Nizam-ul-Mulk while he taught at his Madrasa Nizamia in Baghdad. Shaikh Qushairi’s other contemporaries were Shaikh al-Juwayni and Imam al-Bayhaqi. He wrote many books including Tafsir Al-Quran titled ‘Lata'if al-Isharat bi-Tafsir al-Quran.’ His most famous work is titled ‘Al-Qushairi’s Epistle on Sufism’ (الرسالة القشيرية في علم التصوف).
