Shaikh Shahabuddin Umar Suharwardi (رحمتہ اللہ علیہ)

The book ‘Etiquette of Disciples’ (آداب المريدين) was written by Shaikh Abu Al-Najib Suharwardi (رحمتہ اللہ علیه) (1097– 1168 CE) who was a scholar of Hadith, Quran, Fiqh, Sufi Shaikh and founder of Suharwardia Sufi Order. He was famous for his teaching as well as purification of hearts of his students. The book consists of twenty-seven chapters, discussing various issues related to the etiquette of Sufi wayfarers. This book had become popular with the spread of the Suhrawardi Sufi order during the time of Shaikh Shahabuddin Umar Suharwardi (رحمتہ اللہ علیه) who was the successor of Shaikh Al-Najib.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Shaikh Shahabuddin Abu Hafs Umar Al-Suhrawardi (1145 – 1234) (شهاب الدين أبو حفص عمر السهروردي رحمة اللہ عليه) was a nephew of Shaikh Abu Al-Najib Suhrawardi (1097–1168), Professor of Fiqh at Nizamia College, Baghdad whose teachings came to be known as Suharwardiya Sufi order. It is reported that he had a high regard for Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jeelani (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ), even though he was the disciple of Shaikh Qadhi Wajihuddin. However, Shaikh Shahabuddin Suhrawardi was the person responsible for formalizing and expanding this order. He is famous for his treatise ‘Discerners of Cognition’ (عوارف المعارف) which is regarded as one of the most important works in Tasawwuf.
