Shaikh Shahabuddin Abu Hafs Umar Al-Suhrawardi (1145 – 1234) (شهاب الدين أبو حفص عمر السهروردي رحمة اللہ عليه) was a nephew of Shaikh Abu Al-Najib Suhrawardi (1097–1168), Professor of Fiqh at Nizamia College, Baghdad whose teachings came to be known as Suharwardiya Sufi order. It is reported that he had a high regard for Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jeelani (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ), even though he was the disciple of Shaikh Qadhi Wajihuddin. However, Shaikh Shahabuddin Suhrawardi was the person responsible for formalizing and expanding this order. He is famous for his treatise ‘Discerners of Cognition’ (عوارف المعارف) which is regarded as one of the most important works in Tasawwuf.
