Juz 30 -

The Announcement

An-Naba | Sura # 78 | 40 verses | Makkan

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful

78:1 About what,  are they asking one another,

78:2 about the mighty event,

78:3 over which they disagree?

78:4 Very soon they will come to know.

78:5 Surely, very soon they will come to know.

Sura an-Naba explains about the Day of Judgment. It is an inevitable event which will occur at an appointed time. There is no need to have a doubt over it by the disbelievers and their arguments in this context are pointless.

The disbelievers are reminded about the mammoth events that are taking place in their lives on day to day basis. With these in view, there is no basis whatsoever to disbelieve about the Day of Judgment.

78:6 Is it not true that We have spread the earth like a bed,

78:7 and the mountains as the pegs,

78:8 and created you in pairs,

78:9 and made you sleep for rest,

78:10 and made the night as a cover (to relax),

78:11 and made the day (to work) for livelihood.

78:12 And We built above you seven mighty (heavens),

78:13 And made (the sun) a glowing lamp?

78:14 And We sent down plenty of water from the rain clouds,

78:15 to produce with it grain and vegetation,

78:16 and dense gardens.

78:17 The Day of decision is already fixed.

78:18 On that Day, the trumpet will be blown and you shall come forth in crowds.

78:19 The sky shall be opened as if there were doors (in them).

78:20 And the mountains will be blown becoming (like) a mirage.

78:21 (Know that) Hell has been lying in wait,

78:22 as a home for the transgressors,

78:23 to stay in there for a long, long time.

There are three verses in Quran about the dwellers of Hell, as follows.

It is in Quran - إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَعَنَ الْكَافِرِينَ وَأَعَدَّ لَهُمْ سَعِيرًا - خَالِدِينَ فِيهَا أَبَدًا [ Indeed, Allah's curse is on the disbelievers and He has prepared for them a Blaze (of Hell) where they will live for ever]. (Al-Ahzab - 64)

It is in Quran - وَالَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا وَكَذَّبُوا بِآيَاتِنَا أُولَـٰئِكَ أَصْحَابُ النَّارِ خَالِدِينَ فِيهَا ۖ وَبِئْسَ الْمَصِيرُ [ But the ones who disbelieved and denied Our verses, those are the companions of the Fire, abiding therein. And (what a) wretched is that destination.] (At-Taghaabun - 10)

It is in Quran - إِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ كَانَتْ مِرْصَادًا - لِلطَّاغِينَ مَآَبًا - لَابِثِينَ فِيهَا أَحْقَابًا [ (Know that) Hell has been lying in wait, as a home for the transgressors, to stay therein for a long long time. ] (An-Naba - 21-23)

It is part of our Iman that the dwellers of Hell and Paradise will remain there for ever. There is no concept of death in Paradise or in Hell. However, some sinners will be punished in Hell for sometime and later, from Prophet Mohammad's (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) mediation, they will be taken out of Hell and transferred to Paradise. Anyone who has an atom's weight of Iman in his heart will be taken out of Hell and transferred to Paradise. After that the doors of the Paradise and Hell will be closed and the dwellers in both Hell and Paradise are separated from each other for ever.

There are differences of opinion among scholars on the punishment of the dwellers of Hell, as follows:

(i) Some say that when there is no Iman in heart, there is no scope of respite in the punishment of the Dwellers of Hell. It is eternal, continuous and unending.

(ii) In some scholars' opinion, after a long long time of punishment of the dwellers of Hell, Allah's Mercy will overcome His rage and their covenant to their Lord will help them and they will be pardoned by the Most Merciful Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ). The Fire of the Hell will get extinguished and some kind of relief and comfort will be provided to them in Hell itself, but they will not be transferred to Paradise.

It is in Hadith - It is reported on the authority of Abu Huraira (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) that the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said, when Allah completed the creation, he wrote in his book with him upon the throne, 'Verily, My Mercy prevails over my Wrath. (Bukhari, Muslim)

It is in Quran - وَإِذْ أَخَذَ رَبُّكَ مِنْ بَنِي آَدَمَ مِنْ ظُهُورِهِمْ ذُرِّيَّتَهُمْ وَأَشْهَدَهُمْ عَلَى أَنْفُسِهِمْ أَلَسْتُ بِرَبِّكُمْ قَالُوا بَلَى شَهِدْنَا أَنْ تَقُولُوا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ إِنَّا كُنَّا عَنْ هَذَا غَافِلِينَ [ And (mention) when your Lord took from the children of Adam (عليه السلام), from their loins, their descendants and made them testify of themselves, 'Am I not your Lord?' They said, 'Yes, we have testified.' Lest you would say on the day of Resurrection, 'Indeed, we were unaware of it.' ] (Al-A'raaf - 172)

Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) and His Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) know best.

78:24 (The dwellers of Hell will) find neither cool nor any thing to drink,

78:25 except boiling water and (oozing) pus.

78:26 (That is) an appropriate requital,

78:27 for they never expected to be accountable,

78:28 and utterly rejected Our verses.

78:29 We have recorded every single thing in a book!

78:30 (It will be said) : 'So you taste (the results of your evil actions).  We shall give you nothing but increase in punishment.'

To seek the truth about our Creator, know about Him and follow His commandments is part of the nature of human beings. A person who follows Taghut (Devils) and evil desires, is indeed going against his own nature. If you go against your own nature, surely you will suffers in this world and in Hereafter. It is important that we realize this fact.

Who has instilled this nature in us? It is Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ), our Creator who has instilled in us the drive to seek truth.

Where was the above promise made? It was in Aalam-e-Mithaal. It is obvious from the above verse that it is part of our nature to seek the truth about our Creator and walk on His way. Why it is so? It is because, it is part of our nature. To assist us in following His path, Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) has sent many Prophets/Apostles who have guided us on His way.

[And We certainly sent into every nation an Apostle, (saying), 'Worship Allah and avoid Taghut' (devils). And among them were those whom Allah guided, and among them were those upon whom error was (deservedly) decreed. So proceed through the Earth and observe how was the end of the deniers (who followed Taghut). ] (An-Nahl - 36)

Every Prophet took solemn pledges from their followers individually and collectively on the instance of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ). Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) also took collective and individual pledges from Sahabah.

Excessive attention on the comforts of the world and allowing the carnal desires to rule over their hearts makes people forget about the purpose of their coming into this world which was to recognize their creator, their true Lord and worship Him earnestly.

It is in Quran - وَمَا خَلَقْتُ الْجِنَّ وَالْإِنسَ إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُونِ [ And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me. ] (Adh-Dhaariyat - 56)

78:31 Surely, there will be success (award of Paradise) for the righteous,

78:32 orchards and grape gardens,

78:33 splendid, well matched spouses,

78:34 and  full cups (of pure  blissful drink).

78:35 There, they will hear no gossip or lies.

78:36 (It is) a reward from your Lord and a gift beyond their account (of good deeds),

78:37 from the Most Compassionate, Who is the Lord of the heavens, the earth and all that lies between them; before Whom no one shall be able to speak.

78:38 On that Day, Jibreel (عليه السلام) and the angels will stand in rows; none will speak except the one to whom the Most Compassionate (Lord) will allow to speak, and he will speak what is right.

78:39 That is (without doubt) the true Day. Let those who wish, seek a Way  to their Lord (by obeying Him in this world).

78:40 Surely, We have warned you of an imminent punishment, on the Day when people will see (the deeds) what their hands have sent forth, and the disbeliever will cry : 'Woe to me! Would that I were dust!'

Those who drag forth

An-Naazi'aat | Sura # 79 | 46 verses | Makkan

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful

79:1 (I swear) By those (angels) who (forcefully) wrench out (the souls of the unbelievers).

Whenever it is said in a verse (I swear) By such and such, it means to emphasize on certain issue.

79:2 And  By those (angels) who gently draw out (the souls of the believers),

79:3 And those (angels) who swiftly glide along (in the universe).

79:4 (And) By those (angels) who press forward in  race (to fulfill Allah’s commandments).

79:5 And those (angels) who regulate the affairs of the world (by Allah's command).

79:6 That day (of Resurrection), a violent jolt (blowing of the trumpet)  will rock (the earth).

79:7 The second blowing of the trumpet will follow it.

79:8 That day, hearts would pound (in panic).

79:9 And eyes would drift downward (with dread).

79:10 (But) the unbelievers (do not believe, and) say (mockingly),  'shall we really be restored to our former state (of life again),

79:11 even after we have been reduced to decayed bones?'

79:12 Adding, 'Then such a return would be a (total) loss (for us)!'

79:13 But (they don't realize that) it will only be a single sounding (of the trumpet),

79:14 and they will be back to life in open plain.

79:15 Has the story of Musa (عليه السلام) reached you (O' Prophet  ﷺ)?

79:16 When his Lord called out to him in the sacred valley of Tuwa,

79:17 (commanding) 'Go to Pharaoh, as he has surely transgressed (all bounds).

79:18 And ask him, ‘do you have the desire to purify yourself (from sins)?

79:19 If so, I shall guide you towards your Lord, so that you may fear Him.'

79:20 (Thus) He (Prophet Musa عليه السلام) went to the Pharaoh and) showed him the great sign (the miracle of the Staff).

79:21 But Pharaoh rejected the offer and disobeyed.

79:22 Then he hastily turned away.

79:23 Then he assembled his people and made an announcement,

79:24 saying, 'I am your lord most high.'

79:25 So Allah seized him, making him an example in this life and the next.

79:26 Truly there is a lesson in this for those who fear (Allah).

Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) provides respite to the transgressors for a while and allows them some time to repent. If they persist in their transgression, He seizes them and punishes them in this World itself and their punishment in the Hereafter is much more severe.

79:27 O' mankind, is your creation harder than the heavens He built?

79:28 He raised it high and perfected it.

79:29 He gave darkness to the night and brightness to the day.

79:30 As for the earth, He spread it out as well.

79:31 From it, He produced its water and its pasture.

79:32 And He set the mountains firmly in place.

79:33 All as (a means of) sustenance for you and your animals.

79:34 But when the greatest catastrophe (the Day of  Resurrection ) will strike.

79:35 On that Day every person will remember all (his) striving (in the world).

79:36 And the Hellfire will be displayed for all to see.

79:37 As for the one who rebelled,

79:38 and preferred the life of this world,

79:39 surely, will have his abode in Hell.

79:40 But the one who feared standing before his Lord and restrained himself from evil desires,

79:41 shall have his home in paradise.

79:42 They ask you ( O' Noble Apostle  ﷺ) about the Hour, 'When will it take place?'

79:43 (Tell them) it is not your responsibility to tell about its time.

79:44 (As) only your Lord knows when it will come.

79:45 You are to warn anyone who fears (that day).

79:46 The day when they see it (its occurrence), it will seem (to them that) they had stayed in the world but only an evening or its turning into dawn.

He frowned

Abasa | Sura # 80 | 42 verses | Makkan

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful

80:1 A kind of uneasiness was witnessed on the face (of the Prophet ﷺ), as he turned aside.

80:2 When there came to him the blind man (Ibn Umme Maktumؓ, who came to the Prophet ﷺ and interrupted his preaching to the chiefs of Makka).

Abdullah Ibn Umm Maktum (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) was the cousin of Ummul Momineen Khadija (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا). He was blind by birth. Once he visited the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) at a time when he was preaching Islam to some chieftains of Makka and was busy in clearing their doubts. Since Abdullah Ibn Umm Maktum (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) was blind, he did not know that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) was busy at that time. He started asking the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) one thing after the other. Since the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) was busy, he felt a little unease. This incident has been mentioned in the beginning of this verse.

It is important to note that Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) and His Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) teach us by various ways that cover every aspect of our lives.

It is in Quran – وَمَا يَنطِقُ عَنِ الْهَوَىٰ - إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا وَحْيٌ يُوحَىٰ [ (Prophet Mohammad ﷺ) does not say anything with his self desire, except that this is the revelation which is coming to him (from Allah).] (An-Najm – 3-4).

It is in Quran - لَّقَدْ كَانَ لَكُمْ فِي رَسُولِ اللَّهِ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ [ Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) is an exemplary model (for all of you).] (Al-Ahzab – 21).

Some people wrongly relate human weaknesses with the person of a prophet or his close associates based on certain incidents in their lives. Sometimes people are unable to comprehend the meaning of a certain verse. They should know that an incident or a statement used for a Prophet carries different meanings than when it is used for a common man. If you do not understand these sensitive issues, you may go astray.

Understanding Quran is not an easy task. Only with the mercy of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) and His Apostle Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) one can comprehend the meanings of the Quranic verses in their proper perspective.

80:3 For all you know, he (the blind man) might be seeking to purify himself?

80:4 He might heed (the warning); perhaps the Reminder would benefit him.

80:5 (Rather than), the one who displays indifference,

80:6 to whom (the Makkan Chiefs) you were attending;

80:7 (O' Noble Prophet ﷺ  do not focus too much attention on them as) you are not responsible if they do not purify themselves. (Your responsibility is only to convey the message of Allah).

80:8 But as for the one who came to you, eager (to learn),

80:9 with fear of Allah in his heart,

80:10 from him you got distracted (because of your efforts in teaching Islam to everyone.

80:11 No, in fact this (Quran) is a reminder!

80:12 So those who want, let them pay attention to it.

80:13 It is (written) on pages held in honor,

80:14 highly esteemed (and) purified,

80:15 in the hands of the scribes (angels),

80:16 (who are) honorable and obedient.

80:17 Condemned is the (disbelieving) man! How ungrateful he is (to Allah)!

80:18 (He should know) Out of what,  Allah has created him?

80:19 He created him from a sperm-drop, and ordained his development,

80:20 then makes his way of life smooth for him.

80:21 Then He causes him to die and buried.

80:22 Then when He wills, He will resurrect him.

80:23 But the Human did not fulfill what Allah has commanded him.

80:24 Let man reflect on the food he eats.

80:25 We pour out water (rain) in abundance,

80:26 and caused the soil to break open,

80:27 and grew grains in it,

80:28 and grapes and vegetables,

80:29 and olives and date-palms,

80:30 and gardens, dense with many trees,

80:31 and the fruits and fodder.

80:32 all as (means of) sustenance for you and your animals. )

80:33 When the deafening blare (of the trumpet) sounds!

80:34 that Day every person will flee from their own siblings,

80:35 and (even from) his mother and father,

80:36 and wife and children.

80:37 For each one of them, on that Day, shall have concern (and worry) for himself that will make him indifferent to the others.

80:38 On that Day (some) faces will be bright,

80:39 laughing, rejoicing (at the good news of Paradise).

80:40 And (other) faces, on that Day, will be covered with dust,

80:41 (and) cast in gloom.

80:42 Those are the disbelievers, the (wicked)  sinners.

The Overthrowing

At-Takwir | Sura # 81 | 29 verses | Makkan

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful

81:1 When the sun (and the solar system) is wrapped up,

81:2 and the stars are dispersed,

81:3 and  the mountains are blown away,

81:4 and the  pregnant camel (about to give birth) is left unattended (by its owner in horror),

81:5 and the beasts are gathered together (in fear);

81:6 and when the seas  will be put on fire.

81:7 And when people will be gathered in groups.

81:8 And when baby girls, buried alive, are asked,

81:9 for what crime they were put to death.

81:10 And when the records (of deeds) are laid open,

81:11 And when the skies will be removed.

81:12 And the Hell Fire is set ablaze.

81:13 And when the Paradise will be brought near.

81:14 Then every person will know what deeds he has brought.

81:15 So,  I swear by the retreating and hiding stars,

81:16 and the stars that rise and set.

81:17 And by the night as it recedes.

81:18 And the day as it breaks.

81:19 This (Quran is the word of Allah) recited  by the Noble Apostle

81:20 who has power and high rank with the Lord of the Throne.

81:21 who is obeyed and trustworthy.

81:22 He lives with you and he is not insane.

81:23 He (the Prophet ﷺ) has seen his Lord at the meeting place,  manifestly.

81:24 And he (the Prophet ﷺ) does not withhold the knowledge of the unseen.

81:25 And it is not the word of the outcast Satan.

81:26 Then where are you going?

81:27 Surely this (Quran) is only a reminder to the whole world,

81:28 for those who wish to take the straight path.

81:29 The wish of any of you does not matter, unless Allah, the Lord of the universe, wills it too!

The Cleaving

Al-Infitaar | Sura # 82 | 19 verses | Makkan

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful

82:1 When the skies will be split apart,

82:2 and when the stars will be scattered.

82:3 And when the seas will be torn apart.

82:4 And when the graves will be laid open.

82:5 Every person will know what he has sent forward and what he has left behind.

82:6 O' man! What has lured you away from your gracious Lord,

82:7 Who created you, formed you, and proportioned you,

82:8 and molded you in whatever form He willed?

82:9 Nay!  But you deny the Day of Judgment!

82:10 You should know that guardian angels have indeed been appointed over you,

82:11 (who are) honorable angels, recording (everything).

82:12 They know everything you do.

82:13 Surely, (on that Day) the righteous will be in delight (of Paradise).

82:14 And the wicked would surely be in Hell Fire.

82:15 They will (be thrown and) burn in it on the Day of Judgment.

82:16 And they will not be able to escape from it.

82:17 How would you know what is the Day of Judgment?

82:18 Truly, how would you know what is the Day of Judgment?

82:19 It will be the Day when no one shall have the power to do anything for another;  for, on that Day, Allah shall keep the entire command to Himself.

Defrauding

Al-Mutaffiffin | Sura # 83 | 36 verses | Makkan

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful

83:1 Woe to the defrauders!

83:2 Who insist on being given full when they take from others,

83:3 but when they give by measure or give by weight to others, they give less than due.

83:4 Don’t they think that they will be resurrected,

83:5 on a Mighty Day,

83:6 a Day when all mankind will stand before the Lord of the worlds (for reckoning)?

83:7 Indeed the record of the wicked is kept in Sijjeen (the lowest earth).

83:8 And how would you know what ´Sijjeen' is?

83:9 It is a comprehensive Book (of records of the wicked).

83:10 Woe on that Day to the disbelievers,

83:11 who deny the Day of Judgment.

83:12 None would deny it except an evildoing transgressor.

83:13 When Our verses are recited to him, he says, 'Legends of ancient people.'

83:14 No. In fact what they have been doing has rusted their hearts.

83:15 Indeed on that Day, they shall be debarred from the vision of their Lord.

83:16 Then they shall burn in Hell,

83:17 and it will be said to them, 'this is what you used to deny!'

83:18 Indeed! The righteous' record is in 'Illiyyeen'.

83:19 And how would you know what is 'Illiyyun'?

83:20 It is a comprehensive Book (of record of the pious),

83:21 witnessed by those in the proximity of their Lord.

83:22 Surely, the righteous will be in the delight (of Paradise),

83:23 reclining on soft couches, looking all around.

83:24 You would notice a blissful radiance on their faces.

83:25 They will be given pure wine to drink, which is  preserved and sealed.

83:26 The seal of that wine will smell like musk. (Thus) those who want to strive, let them strive (in doing good deeds).

83:27 And this drink’s flavor will come from 'Tasneem',

83:28 a spring from which the people in the proximity of their Lord will drink.

83:29 During their life on earth, the culprits used to mock at the believers.

83:30 They used to wink (in mockery) at one another when the believers passed by them.

83:31 (And used to (make mockery) about them when they returned to their people.

83:32 And when they saw the believers, they used to say, 'these are the people who have surely gone astray,'

83:33 even though they were not sent as keepers over the believers.

83:34 So today, it is the believers' turn to laugh at the unbelievers,

83:35 as they sit on couches, gazing around.

83:36 Will not the infidels pay for what they had done?

The Splitting Open

Al-Inshiqaaq | Sura # 84 | 25 verses | Makkan

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful

84:1 When the sky splits apart,

84:2 obeying its Lord as it must,

84:3 and when the earth is flattened out,

84:4 and cast out all that is within it and becomes empty,

84:5 obeying its Lord as it must.

84:6 O' mankind! Indeed, you are steadily advancing towards your Lord.  You shall meet Him!

84:7 As for those who are given their record in their right hand (on the Day of Judgment),

84:8 they will have an easy reckoning,

84:9 and will return to their people joyfully.

84:10 But those who will be given their record (of deeds) from behind their back (in their left hand),

84:11 shall be calling for death,

84:12 and (they will)  burn in a blazing fire;

84:13 for they used to be prideful among their people,

84:14 and thought that they would never come back (to Us for accountability)!

84:15 Yes! indeed, their Lord was watching (over their misdeeds)!

84:16 So I swear by the glow of sunset;

84:17 and the night, and everything it enshrouds,

84:18 and the moon, when it is full,

84:19 You would definitely move along, from one stage to another.

84:20 What is the problem with them? Why don´t they believe?

84:21 When the Quran is recited before them, why don't they fall prostrate?

The above is the 'verse of Sajda' (آیت سجدہ). If someone is reading it alone, should do prostration (سجدة) alone. If it is read loudly in an audience, the reciter and all the listeners should do 'Prostration of Recitation' (Sajda-e-Tilaawah - سجدة التلاوة) individually.

The Prostration can be done in sitting or standing position. In the Hanafi school of thought, 'Prostration of Recitation' (Sajda-e-Tilaawah - سجدة التلاوة) is obligatory (Fardh). With Shafii and Maliki, it is Sunnah.

It is in Hadith - 'When you have recited a verse requiring Sajdah-e-Tilaawaah, you should go down for Sajdah with Allahu-Akbar and rise from Sajdah with Allahu-Akbar, which may be performed sitting, though it is preferable to prostrate oneself from the standing position. (Abu Dawood)

Have the intention to do Prostration of recitation (سجدة التلاوة). The place where you are reading/reciting Quran should be clean. Turn towards Qibla, say (quietly) Allahu Akbar, go into prostration once, recite the 'Tasbih of Sajdah' 'Subhana Rabbi al-A'alaa' (سبحان ربّي الاعلى ) at least 3 times and raise from the Sajda saying Allahu Akbar.

84:22 In fact, the disbelievers persist in denial.

84:23 And Allah knows best what they are hiding (in their hearts).

84:24 So give them the news of a painful torment,

84:25 except those who believe and do good deeds; for them there will be a never ending reward (Paradise).

The Constellations

Al-Burooj | Sura # 85 | 22 verses | Makkan

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful

85:1 (I swear) by the skies, with (all) the constellations.

85:2 And the promised Day (of Judgment),

85:3 And (by) the witness (bearing the evidence), as well as the evidence (itself).

85:4 How terrible were the people of the trench.

85:5 (They arranged) the fire fed with abundant fuel (of alive Believers who refused to submit to their false gods).

85:6 and they sat by it (Fire),

85:7 Witnessing what they had done to the believers!

85:8 They tortured them for no other reason than that they believed in Allah, the Almighty, the Praise Worthy,

This incident is believed to have happened to the followers of Isa (عليه السلام). The disbelievers burned them alive in a trench and watched them burning.

85:9 to whom belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth, and Allah is witness to all things.

85:10 Those who persecute the believing men and women and then do not repent will certainly suffer the punishment of Hell and the torment of burning.

85:11 Surely, those who believe and do righteous deeds, they will have gardens (of Paradise) under which rivers flow. That is the great success.

85:12 Indeed, the crushing grip of your Lord is severe.

85:13 Surely, it is He Who originates the creation of everything, and it is He Who will repeat it on the Day of Resurrection.

85:14 He is the Most Forgiving and the Most Loving!

85:15 All Glorious  Lord of the Throne,

85:16 He does everything whatever He wishes.

85:17 Has the story of the (destroyed) forces reached you (O Prophet  ﷺ),

85:18 (the forces of) Pharaoh and Thamûd?

85:19 Yet those who disbelieve (among your people) persist in denying (the Divine Message).

85:20 But Allah encompasses them from all sides.

85:21 This is indeed a glorious Quran,

85:22 (inscribed) in the Preserved Tablet.

The Morning Star

At-Taariq | Sura # 86 | 17 verses | Makkan

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful

86:1 (I swear ) by the sky, and the night star!

86:2 And how would you know what the night star is?

86:3 It is the star of piercing brightness.

86:4 There is no human being but has a protector (angel) over him.

86:5 Let the human being consider what he was created from!

86:6 He is created from an emitted fluid,

86:7 emerging from the vicinity of the backbone and the ribs.

86:8 Surely, Allah is All Capable over the human's revival (on the Day of Resurrection),

86:9 on the Day when the hidden secrets will be brought to scrutiny.

86:10 (That day), man shall not have any strength, nor any helpers.

86:11 (I swear) by the sky that repeatedly sends rain down.

86:12 And by the earth that splits (and allows the plants to emerge).

86:13 Surely this (Quran) is a decisive word,

86:14 (which is) not to be taken lightly.

86:15 These (unbelievers) are plotting (against you O' Prophet ﷺ).

86:16 (But they are unaware as) I also plan to punish them (for their plot).

86:17 So (let us) give the unbelievers a little respite. (and) deal with them gently for a while.

The Most High

Al-A'laa | Sura # 87 | 19 verses | Makkan

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful

87:1 (O' People) Glorify the Name of your Lord, the Most High,

87:2 Who has created (every thing) in its due proportion.

87:3 Assigned (everything its) nature, then guided it along!

87:4 Who brings forth green pasture,

87:5 then makes it dry, brownish black (wet and decomposed).

87:6 We will have you recite (the Quran, O Prophet ﷺ)  so you will not forget (any of it),

87:7 except what Allah wills. Indeed, He knows the apparent, as well as the concealed.

87:8 We shall make it easy for you (O Prophet ﷺ) to follow the easy way.

87:9 So remind (people), for reminder surely helps!

87:10 Whoever fears (Allah) will heed the reminder,

87:11 but the most wicked will ignore it.

87:12 The one who will ignore, shall burn in the mammoth fire,

87:13 where he will not (be able to either) live or die.

87:14 Indeed, he has achieved success who cleans and purifies (himself),

87:15 and who remembers the Name of his Lord and prays.

87:16 Nay, (O' people) you prefer the worldly life,

87:17 although the Hereafter is better and everlasting.

87:18 All this (teaching) can be found in the earlier Scriptures (as well),

87:19 the scriptures of Ibrahim and Musa (عليهما السلام).

The Overwhelming

Al-Ghaashiya | Sura # 88 | 26 verses | Makkan

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful

88:1 Has the news of the overwhelming event (of Resurrection) reached you?

88:2 On that Day (some) faces will be downcast,

88:3 (totally) overburdened and exhausted.

88:4 They will (be thrown in Hell to) burn in an intensely hot Fire,

88:5 and will be given drinks from a boiling spring.

88:6 They will have no food except a foul, thorny shrub,

88:7 that neither nourishes nor satisfies hunger.

88:8 On that Day (some) faces will be glowing with bliss.

88:9 (They will be) pleased with (the outcome of) their (virtuous) efforts (in the world),

88:10 (sitting) in an elevated Garden (of Paradise),

88:11 where they will hear no idle talk.

88:12 Therein they shall have running springs.

88:13 They will be on thrones raised high,

88:14 with goblets placed before them;

88:15 silky cushions ranged in order,

88:16 and (splendid) carpets spread out.

88:17 Do they (the disbelievers who deny the Resurrection) not look at the camels, how they are created?

88:18 and the sky, how it was raised (high);

88:19 and at the mountains; how (firmly) are they fixed?

88:20 And  how the earth is spread out?

88:21 So, (continue to) remind (them). Indeed, you are (an Apostle ﷺ) to remind (them).

88:22 (But you are not responsible if they deny,  as) You are not  a warden over them.

88:23 Whoever turns away and rejects the truth,

88:24 then Allah will inflict upon him the severe punishment.

88:25 Certainly, to Us will be their return,

88:26   then, certainly it is for Us to call them to account.

The Dawn

Al-Fajr | Sura # 89 | 30 verses | Makkan

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful

89:1 (I swear) by the dawn,

89:2 and the (first) ten nights (of Dhul-Hijja),

89:3 and (by) the even (number) and the odd,

89:4 and by the night when it departs!

89:5 Is there not in these  an oath (enough evidence) for those who use their common sense?

89:6 Have you (O' Prophet  ﷺ) not seen how your Lord dealt with (the people of) Aad?

89:7 (And) the residents of Iram, the city of lofty pillars,

89:8 Such that the likes of them had never been raised in other cities.

89:9 And Thamûd who carved (their homes in) the rocks in the (Stone) Valley.

89:10 And with the Pharaoh, who had formidable strongholds?

89:11 All of them committed excesses in their lands,

89:12 and spread corruption there in.

89:13 So, your Lord afflicted them with torment.

89:14 Surely your Lord is ever watchful.

89:15 Such is man! When his Lord puts him through a test by granting him honor and a life of ease, he says, 'My Lord has honored me!'

89:16 And when His Lord tests him by restricting his means of livelihood, he says, 'My Lord has disgraced me!'

89:17 Absolutely not! In fact, you (O' People) are not (even) gracious to an orphan,

89:18 nor do you encourage each other in feeding the poor!

89:19 Greedily, you (misappropriate and) devour the inheritance ( of the weak, the widows and the orphans),

89:20 and you love wealth with all your hearts.

89:21 No, indeed! When the earth is crushed, pounded and crushed.

89:22 And your Lord (Tajalli-e-Elahi) comes along with angels ranked in rows.

89:23 And Hell is brought forth on that Day. This is when every (disbelieving) person will remember (their sins). But what is the use of remembering then?

89:24 The (disbeliever) will cry, 'I wish I had sent forth (something good) for my (after) life.'

89:25 No one can punish (the deniers as severely) as Allah will, that day!

89:26 And none will shackle as severely as Allah shackles (the deniers that day).

89:27 (The righteous would be told), 'O Satisfied Self',

89:28 return to your Lord, well pleased (with Him) and well pleasing (to Him),

89:29 'join My (honored) servants!,

89:30 and enter My Paradise.'

The City

Al-Balad | Sura # 90 | 20 verses | Makkan

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful

90:1 Nay, I do swear by this city (of Makka).

90:2 For you (O Noble Prophet  ﷺ) are in this city.

90:3 And by every parent and (their) child!

90:4 Surely, We have created human beings to work hard (not to sit idle).

90:5 Does he thinks that no one will have power over him?

90:6 Human says (boastfully),  'I have spent a lot of wealth.'

90:7 Does he think that no one sees him?

90:8 Have We not given him two eyes?

90:9 And a tongue and a pair of lips (to control his sinful utterances),

90:10 and shown him both the ways (the  right and the wrong)?

90:11 But man does not attempt (to walk on the right path of)  'Aqaba' (as it looks) harder (and uphill task for him).

90:12 And how would you know what is 'Aqaba' (the valley of right path)?

90:13 It is to free a slave,

90:14 or to give food (to the needy, particularly) in times of famine,

90:15 (or provide help) to an orphan relative,

90:16 or to a poor person in distress.

90:17 Furthermore, (the right path of 'Aqaba' is) to be among those who believe and persevere (in belief), and persevere with kindness and compassion (to others).

90:18 (The people of the right path) are the people of the Right Hand (people of Paradise).

90:19 But those who disbelieve in Our revelations, they are the people of the left hand (people of Hell),

90:20 On whom the Fire will be sealed.

91:7 And by the  'self' (نفس) and the completeness given to it.

91:8 (The human ) was given awareness of its (inner-self's) evil and its virtue.

91:9 He succeeded who purified it,

91:11 (The people of) Thamûd rejected (the truth) out of arrogance,

91:13 The Apostle of Allah ( Saleh  عليه السلام) said to them, 'That is the she-camel of Allah! (Don’t harm it and don’t stop it from) its drink.'

91:14 They denied him and killed the she-camel.   So their Lord destroyed them because of their sin, and leveled them to the ground.

91:15 Allah is stern in punishing the wicked.

92:4 Surely, your endeavor is for different ends.

92:5 As for the one who is charitable and mindful (of Allah),

92:6 and affirms the best (in faith, deeds, and the rewards in Hereafter),

92:7 We will facilitate for him the Way of ease (in virtue).

92:8 As for him who is a stingy,  and considers himself independent of Allah,

92:9 and denies the best (in faith, deeds, and the rewards in Hereafter),

93:3 (O' Noble Prophet  ﷺ) Your Lord did not leave you, nor is He displeased (as some enemies are claiming).

In is in Ahadith that the revelations were stopped for a few days during Prophet's (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) stay in Makka. In some Ahadith, it is for 12 days, in some it is 15, 25 and even 40 days. It made the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) sorrowful and gave an opportunity to the disbelievers who started claiming that the Prophet's (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) Lord was displeased and had forsaken him. Sura Ad-Dhuhaa was revealed at that time.

The break in revelations is known as 'Fatra' (الفطرة) which is normal with Prophets.

The break of 'Ilham' and/or the state of closeness with Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) in the case of Awliya is also normal. It is known as 'Qabz' (قبض). In the state of Qabz, it looks that Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) has abandoned the Wali. During this state, Awliya Allah turn to Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) in repentance and continue with Astaghfaar until the state is over and they come back to the state of proximity with Allah which is known as 'Bast' (بسط).

93:4 (O' Noble Prophet  ﷺ) every moment for you is better than the moment just passed.

93:5 And (surely) your Lord will give so much that you will be pleased.

93:6 Did He not find you an orphan and took care of you?

93:7 And did He not find you lost (in the love of your beloved Lord during seclusion in Hira Cave) and He showed you the way (towards Him)?

93:8 Did He not find you in need and made you self-sufficient?

93:9 (O' Noble Prophet  ﷺ) Treat the orphan kindly (not strictly).

93:10 And be soft on the beggar (not angry).

93:11 And proclaim the blessings of your Lord (to the whole world).

The Consolation

Ash-Sharh | Sura # 94 | 8 verses | Makkan

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful

94:1 (O Prophet  ﷺ) Have We not expanded your chest for you.

Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) is the teacher of Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), and the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) is the teacher of humanity. Thus, the expanse of the chest (knowledge) of Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) is indeed limitless and it is from the beginning of the time.

(i) It is in Hadith - Jabir Ibn Abdullah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) asked the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), O' Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) may my father and mother be sacrificed for you, tell me the first thing Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) created before all things.' The Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said : O'Jabir (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ), the first thing Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) created was the light of your Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) from His light. (And everything else was created from that light). (Part of the Hadith).

The above Hadith was narrated by Abdur Razzaq (d. 211 AH) in his Musannaf according to Qastallani in al-Mawahib al-Laduniyya (1:55) and Zarqani in his Sahrh al-Mawahib (1:56 of the Matba'a al-Amira, Edn, Cairo).

Abdur Razzaq is one of the authentic and reliable narrators. Bukhari took 120 and Muslim took 400 Ahadith from him.

Baihaqi narrated the above Hadith with a different wording in 'Dala'il al-Nubawwa, according to Zurqani in his Sharh al-Mawahib (1:56 of the Matba'a al-Amira, Cairo.) Diyarbakri narrated it in 'Tarikh al-Khamis (1-20).

(ii) It is in Quran – يَا أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ إِنَّا أَرْسَلْنَاكَ شَاهِدًا وَمُبَشِّرًا وَنَذِيرًا - وَدَاعِيًا إِلَى اللَّهِ بِإِذْنِهِ وَسِرَاجًا مُّنِيرًا [ O'Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) Truly We have sent you as a Witness, a Bearer of Glad tidings and a Warner (for the entire cosmos); and one who invites to Allah's (grace) by His consent, and as a lamp spreading light (into the whole cosmos). (Al-Ahzaab 45-46)

In the above verse Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) is described as 'Lamp spreading light' (into the whole cosmos). He is also referred as a 'Witness', a bearer of glad tidings and the one who warns to humanity. A witness is the one who knows about all the physical and spiritual aspects of this Cosmos.

(iii) It is in Hadith - Abu Hurairah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) narrated, 'they (the Sahabah) asked, O'Allah's Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), when was prophet-hood established for you? He said, while Adam (عليه السلام) was between the soul and body' (Tirmidhi).

94:2 And lightened the burden (of spreading the message of Islam),

94:3 which weighed so heavily on your back,

94:4 and exalted your name (in the World).

94:5 So, surely with hardship comes ease.

94:6 No doubt, along with hardship there is ease!

94:7 So, when you are done (with your daily chores, Salah and Zikr), stand to  preach Islam (to people),

94:8 and turn to your Lord with hope.

95:2 and (by) Mount Sinai,

95:3 and by this city of peace (Makka).

95:4 Indeed, We created human beings in the best form.

95:5 (But as a result of transgression) We placed him  into the low of the lowest state.

95:6 Except those who believe and do good deeds,  for they shall have an unending reward.

95:7 So, do you still deny the day of Judgment?

95:8 Is not Allah the Greatest of all Sovereigns?

The Clot

Al-Alaq | Sura # 96 | 19 verses | Makkan

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful

96:1 Read (O' Prophet  ﷺ) In the name of your Lord, who has created (everything),

96:2 created man from the clot of blood.

96:3 Read!  Your Lord is the most Generous!

96:4 Who taught by the pen.

96:5 Taught the human being what he did not know.

The above five verses were the first revelation to Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) when he was in Seclusion at Hira Cave. The happening of first revelations to Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) has been reported in detail in many Ahadith.

It is in Hadith - Narrated Ummul Momineen Aisha (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا), 'the onset of Divine revelations to Allah's Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) was in the form of good dreams which came true like bright day light, and then the love of seclusion was bestowed upon him. He used to go in seclusion in the cave of Hira where he would pray continuously for many days till he would go back to see his family. He would take with him some food for his stay and then come back to Ummul Momineen Khadija (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) to take his food like-wise again till suddenly (one day) the Truth descended upon him while he was in the cave of Hira. The angel came to him and asked him to read. The Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) replied, "I do not know how to read. The Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) added, 'The angel caught me and pressed me so hard that I could not bear it any more. He then released me and again asked me to read and I replied, I do not know how to read. Then he caught me again and pressed me a second time till I could not bear it any more. He then released me and again asked me to read but again I replied, I do not know how to read. Then he caught me for the third time and pressed me, and then released me and said,

[ اقْرَأْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ - خَلَقَ الْإِنسَانَ مِنْ عَلَقٍ - اقْرَأْ وَرَبُّكَ الْأَكْرَمُ - Read in the name of your Lord, who has created (all that exists), has created man from a clot. Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous." (Al-Alaq - 1-3).

(After this) Allah's Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) returned (home) with the revelation; his heart beating hard. He went to Ummul Momineen Khadija bint Khuwailid (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) and said, 'Cover me! Cover me!' He was covered, till his state came back to normal and he told her everything that happened and said, 'I fear that something may happen to me.' Ummul Momineen Khadija (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) replied, "Never! By Allah, Allah will always take care of you. You keep good relations with your Kith and kin, help the poor and the destitute, serve your guests generously and assist the deserving calamity-afflicted ones.' Ummul Momineen Khadija (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) then accompanied him to her cousin Waraqa bin Naufal bin Asad bin Abdul Uzza, who, during Pre-Islamic period, had became Christian and used Hebrew letters in his writing. He used to write from the Gospel in Hebrew as much as Allah wished him to write. He was an old man and had lost his eyesight. Ummul Momineen Khadija (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) said to Waraqa, 'Listen to your nephew, O' my cousin!' Waraqa asked, 'O my nephew! What have you seen?' Allah's Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) described whatever he had seen. Waraqa said, 'This is the same one (angel Gabriel) who keeps the secrets, whom Allah had sent to Moses (عليه السلام). I wish I were young and could live up to the time when your people would turn you out.' Allah's Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) asked, 'Will they drive me out?' Waraqa replied in the affirmative and said, 'Anyone who came with something similar to what you have brought was treated with hostility; and if I should remain alive till the day when you will be turned out, then I would support you strongly.' But after a few days Waraqa died and the Divine revelation was also paused for a while. Sahih al-Bukhari Vol 1, Bk 1, Hadith # 003

96:6 No! (but) indeed, (most of the) human beings transgress,

96:7 because they consider themselves self-sufficient.

96:8 Surely to your Lord is the return (of everyone).

96:9 Have you seen him who prevents,

96:10 an obedient servant  from offering prayers?

96:11 If he was on the right guidance,

96:12 or had enjoined piety, (it would have been better)?

96:13 Have you considered, if he denies the truth and turns away, what will happen?

96:14 Does he  not know that Allah sees (everything)?

96:15 Nay! Let him know that if he does not stop, We will drag him by the forelock,

96:16 a lying, sinful forelock.

96:17 So let him call his associates,

96:18 We will call out the guards (angels) of Hell (to deal with him).

96:19 No! Do not obey him. But prostrate yourselves and draw near (to your Lord).

97:3 The night of glory is better than one thousand months.

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful

98:1 The disbelievers from the People of the Book and the polytheists were not going to desist (from disbelief) until the clear proof came to them.

98:2 (And) an Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم)  from Allah reciting from the purified pages,

98:3 containing upright (Divine) commandments.

98:4 The people of the Book were not divided among themselves till after the clear proof (the Quran)  had come to them.

98:5 And they were commanded nothing but to worship Allah with their sincere devotion, being upright (true in their faith).   And to establish Salah and pay Zakat.   That (indeed) is the right religion.

98:6 Surely, those who disbelieve,  from the People of the Book and the polytheists, will be in the Hell Fire, to stay in there forever. They are the worst of (all) beings.

98:7 Certinly, those who believe and do righteous deeds, are the best of (all) (living) beings.

98:8 Their reward with their Lord shall be the gardens of Eden, beneath which rivers flow. They will abide in it forever. Allah will be pleased with them and they will be pleased with Him. That is for those who fear their Lord.

105:1 Have you not seen (O Prophet  ﷺ) how your Lord dealt with the Army of the Elephant?

An elephant army came under the command of Abraha, the Abysinian Governor of Yemen, who wanted to destroy the Ka’ba in Makkah in the year of Prophet’s But he and his army was destroyed by Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ). Surah al-Feel is about them.

Abundance

Al-Kawthar | Sura # 108 | 3 verses | Makkan

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful

108:1 Indeed, We have given you (O' Prophet  ﷺ) Al-Kawthar.

There are some differences of opinions to the timing and contextual background of the revelation of Sura Al-Kawthar. However, the majority opinion is that this Sura was revealed in Makka some time before Prophet's

Sura al-Kawthar was revealed at a time when Makkan pagans' persecution of Muslims was at its peak. With no business left, the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) was totally cut off from the community. Both his sons Qasim and Abdullah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہما) died early in their childhood during this time. The Pagans thought that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) had been ruined as he does not have any male children to carry forward his religion in future.

Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) says that as against the foolish understanding of Makkan Pagans, Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) has rewarded the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) much more virtue in both the worlds.

In addition, the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) is rewarded with the fountain of al-Kauther on the day of Judgment from which his Umma will drink. The water of this fountain will come from the river of Paradise, also named al-Kauther, which has been given to Prophet

There are many Ahadith narrated by over 50 Sahabah that mention both the fountain of al-Kauther and the river of al-Kauther in Paradise.

The people on the day of Resurrection will suffer from thirst. But the Muslim Ummah will gather in front of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) at this fountain and they will be provided water from it to drink. The water of this fountain will be cool, whiter than milk, sweeter than honey and will smell like musk. Al-Kawthar will be a very large fountain and the number of water jugs provided on it will be like the number of stars in the sky. Whoever drinks a glass of this water will never feel thirsty again.

108:2 So turn to your Lord in prayer and sacrifice.

108:3 Surely, he who hates you (O' Prophet  ﷺ), will (surely) be 'Abtar' (cut off from good of both the worlds).

Some of the pagans called the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) 'Abtar', ( meaning, a person who had been cut off from his roots). Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) says that the one who hates the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) is himself Abtar.

The Disbelievers

Al-Kaafrioon | Sura # 109 | 6 verses | Makkan

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful

109:1 Say (O' Prophet  ﷺ),  O' Disbelievers,

109:2 I do not worship that which you worship,

109:3 nor will you pray (Allah) Whom I pray,

109:4 And I will never worship those (deities) whom you worship,

109:5 Nor will you pray (Allah) Whom I pray.

109:6 Surely, I will be rewarded for my prayers, and you will be punished for your (Idol) worship.

It is reported that the Mushrikeen of Makka often offered the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) certain compromises in religion. They asked him to respect some of their gods and in return they will respect Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ). Similarly, there can be compromise in various Pagans' customs. These offers were rejected by the Prophet

Surah al-Kaafiroon clearly distinguishes between a believer and a non-believer, referred in Quran as Kafir; meaning a person who rejects his own creator. The word Kafir covers hypocrites, atheists, deity, idol, stars and object worshipers and those who claim their god to have creature attributes, like physical body, spouse children, etc.

Divine Support

An-Nasr | Sura # 110 | 3 verses | Madinan

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful

110:1 When Allah’s  help comes and the victory,

110:2 you shall see people throng (and embrace) the religion of Allah in crowds.

110:3 Then glorify the praises of your Lord and seek His forgiveness (for your Ummah). Certainly it is He Who accepts repentance and grants forgiveness!

Surah An-Nasr refers to Allah's (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) help in the victory of Muslims. During 23 years of preaching of Islam, the first 13 years in Makka, the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) faced extreme persecution in the hands of Makkan Pagans. After his immigration to Madina, the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) had to deal with the machinations of Jews, disbelieving tribes, hypocrites' plots and Makkan attacks. Many battles were fought by Muslims during this period and gradually with the help of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ), all resistance to Islam was overpowered and people joined the fold of Islam in crowds. And, when the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) did Hajj in 10 AH (March, 632 AD), over 1,20,000 Muslims accompanied him.

The Palm Fibre

Al-Masad | Sura # 111 | 5 verses | Makkan

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful

111:1 (Let) the hands of Abu Lahab Perish! And perish he!

111:2 Neither his wealth nor (worldly) gains will benefit him.

111:3 He will burn in a flaming Fire,

111:4 and his wife, the carrier of firewood,

111:5 with a palm-fibre rope around her neck.

Abu Lahab was Prophet's (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) uncle, step brother of his father Abdullah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ). He was fair complexioned and a rich man in Makka. He was next door neighbor of the Prophet

He opposed the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) all through his life in which his wife Umm Jameel also participated. She used to collect firewood for her home. It is reported that she used to collect thorns along with firewood and spread them in front of the house of the Prophet She would also spread trash in front of the door of the Prophet

Abu Lahab did not participate in the battle of Badr along with Makkan Pagans, probably because he was sick.

It is reported that when the news of the Makkan defeat at the Battle of Badr reached Makka, there was a lot of dismay among the locals. However, Abu Rafi (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ), who was Abbas’s (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) freedman could not control his overjoy. Abu Lahb was very furious at the joy of Abu Rafi (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) and in spite of his sickness, attacked him and beat him mercilessly. Several people saw this beating, but no one joined Abu Lahab in this attack. They also did not prevent Abu Lahb from beating Abu Rafi Lubaba bint al-Harith (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا), the sister of Ummul Momineen Maimuna bint al-Harith (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) happened to be in the crowd. Seeing the beating of Abu Rafi (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) she grabbed a nearby tent-pole and hit Abu Lahb on his head saying you are beating him because Abbas (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) is absent?’ It is reported that Abu Lahab's head was seriously injured in this incident. A week after this incident, he died. His death occurred in an awfully bad shape as he was afflicted by a contiguous disease and the people of his house left him alone, fearing contagion. When he died, no one came near his body for several days. When the dead body started to get decomposed and the stink spread in the neighborhood, the neighbors objected to his sons. They finally got his body removed with the help of some African slaves. It is reported that they dug a pit and threw his body into it by pushing it with wood sticks and covered the ditch with earth and stones..

Sincerity

Al-Ikhlaas | Sura # 112 | 4 verses | Makkan

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful

112:1 Say (O'Prophet ﷺ), Allah is one (and one all the way.  His Being does not contain elements.  He is not a compound).

112:2 Allah is independent (existing on His own.  Everybody is dependent upon Him)

112:3 He does not have children (He has not given birth to anyone). Nobody has given birth to Him.  (Allah is there from the beginning and no one precedes Him).

112:4 No one can match Him or can equal Him.

The Islamic perception of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ)

There are 3 states of certitude (certainty - يقين) about a thing, as follows.

(i) 'Certitude of knowing' (علم اليقين)

Like we know that fire burns, this is 'certitude of knowing' (علم اليقين).

(ii) 'Certitude of Seeing'(عينُ اليقين)

Suppose we have seen something burning in fire, this is 'Certitude of Seeing' (عينُ اليقين).

(iii) 'Certitude of Realizing' (حقُّ اليقين)

Suppose, our finger was burnt accidentally, this is 'Certitude of Realizing' (حقُّ اليقين).

Most of the Muslims only know about Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ). Their faith in Him is limited to 'Certitude of Knowing' (علم اليقين). They do not see Him or Realize Him.

HOW TO SEE AND REALIZE ALLAH (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ)

Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) is eternal and manifest/apparent. He is there from the beginning and will be there when everything in this Cosmos will vanish.

It is in Quran - هُوَ الْأَوَّلُ وَالْآخِرُ وَالظَّاهِرُ وَالْبَاطِنُ ۖ وَهُوَ بِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ عَلِيمٌ [ He is the First, and the Last, He is the Manifest (apparent) and the Immanent (hidden and actually present through out the material world) and He knows about all the things.] (Al-Hadeed – 3).

It is in Quran - وَهُوَ اللَّهُ فِي السَّمَوَاتِ وَفِي الْأَرْضِ يَعْلَمُ سِرَّكُمْ وَجَهْرَكُمْ وَيَعْلَمُ مَا تَكْسِبُونَ [ He is Allah who is manifest in the heavens and the earth. He knows all your secrets and disclosures and knows about all your deeds. ] (Al-An'aam - 3)

It is in Quran [All that there is in the Cosmos shall vanish. The Countenance (stand alone) of your Lord (by Himself) shall endure, the Lord of Majesty and Glory’. (Ar-Rahman – 26-27).

What is the purpose of our creation?

The answer is provided by Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) Himself.

It is in Hadith - [ The Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) stated that Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) said : كنت كنزاً مخفياً فأحببت أن أعرف فخلقت الخلق [ I was a Hidden Treasure; then I wanted to be known; therefore, I created the creatures. ]

It is in Quran وَمَا خَلَقْتُ الْجِنَّ وَالْإِنسَ إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُونِ [ And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.] (Adh-Dhaariyat - 56)

The contents and meaning of the above Quranic verse and Hadith are exactly the same.

The above Hadith-e-Qudsi is very popular. However, its chain of transmission is not recorded by Hadith scholars. Since the contents of the Hadith are Sahih, and do not contradict with Quran, it is widely accepted by Muslims as authentic.

Three things have been mentioned in the above Hadith, as follows.

(i) Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) was a Hidden treasure (كنزاً مخفياً).

We only came to know about Him after our creation. Before that He was known to Himself.

(ii) He wanted to be known by His creatures.

(iii) Therefore, He created all that available in this Cosmos.

And the only purpose of our creation is to know Him and worship Him.

What is meaning of 'Hidden Treasure' (كنزاً مخفياً)?

The first understanding of Allah’s (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) Existence, which is referred to as 'Hidden Treasure' in the above Hadith is clearly described in the Quran.

It is in Quran - قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ - اللَّهُ الصَّمَدُ - لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ - وَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ [ Say (O’ Prophet ﷺ) Allah is one. Allah is independent. He does not have children. Nobody has given birth to him. Nobody can match Him or equal Him.] (Al-Ikhlas - 1- 4).

Everything in the Cosmos, every existence in the Cosmos is dependent upon Allah's (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) Existence or His Being. Everything is derived from Him. The support of His existence has the capacity to manifest/appear in limitless shapes and forms in consideration with the individual facts and natures of His creatures. All shapes and forms and bodies in this Cosmos are His creatures and the source and origin of these creatures is Allah's Unity (ذاتِ الہى) who is our Lord and Lord of the worlds (رب العالمين).

Does it mean that everything is God or God is in everything?

No, everything is His creature. The source of all creatures is Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ).

There is difference between 'the manifestation of the Being' and 'Divinity of the Being (Uloohiyat - اُلوہيت)'. Divinity is the attribute of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ), who is the 'essence of all existence' in the Cosmos. The Shapes and forms in this cosmos are, though supported by His Being, or we can say manifestations of His Being, but are all creatures. No shape, no body and no form in this Cosmos is Divine or worshipable. Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ), the creator of all these shapes and forms, is the real worshipable God.

We are creatures and our attribute is ‘servant hood’. You, we or anything in this cosmos, though is the manifestation of His Being, but not God. Divinity cannot be associated with any shape or form or body in this Cosmos. Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) cannot be confined into a Shape or Form. He is free from all such limitations.

This is denoted in Islamic Testimony (Kalima Tayyiba) - لا اله الا الله محمد رسول الله [There is no God, but Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ), and Mohammed (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) is the Apostle of Allah. ]

We are born, we grow old and die. Similar is the case with planets, trees and everything in this cosmos.

It is in Quran - كُلُّ مَنْ عَلَيْهَا فَانٍ - وَيَبْقَىٰ وَجْهُ رَبِّكَ ذُو الْجَلَالِ وَالْإِكْرَامِ [All that there is in the Cosmos shall vanish. The Countenance (stand alone) of your Lord (by Himself) shall endure, the Lord of Majesty and Glory’. (Ar-Rahman – 26-27).

All things in this cosmos remain for a specific period and vanish. If they were all gods, or divinity was associated with them, they would have lived indefinitely.

WHO ARE CREATURES?

From the tiny invisible particles (like proton, electron) to the mighty stars and heavens, everything is known to Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) prior to their creation. He created them with His prior knowledge. Individual facts of these creatures along with their individual characteristics were their in Allah’s (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) knowledge.

When Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) wants to create a thing, He looks at its ‘fact’ which is there in His knowledge and commands ‘Be’, and there it comes into existence. This is external existence of that fact (thing).

It is in Quran - إِنَّمَا قَوْلُنَا لِشَيْءٍ إِذَا أَرَدْنَاهُ أَن نَّقُولَ لَهُ كُن فَيَكُونُ [A thing We want to create, We only say 'Be', and there it is (it comes into existence)] (An Nahl - 40)

Before the command of ‘Be’, the things were in internal existence or in Allah’s (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) knowledge as individual facets of His Knowledge. Internal or external existence, both are within the Knowledge of Almighty. Nothing can come out of Allah's Unity.

What is the meaning of the following verses?

It is in Quran - فَإِذَا سَوَّيْتُهُ وَنَفَخْتُ فِيهِ مِن رُّوحِي فَقَعُوا لَهُ سَاجِدِينَ [ (When Adam's عليه السلام body was created, Allah says) I breathed something (into it) out of My Soul.] (Al-Hijr – 29).

It is in Quran - وَإِذْ تَخْلُقُ مِنَ الطِّينِ كَهَيْئَةِ الطَّيْرِ بِإِذْنِي فَتَنفُخُ فِيهَا فَتَكُونُ طَيْرًا بِإِذْنِي [(Allah says to Isa – عليه السلام) And when you make a bird-like shape from the mud and blow into it your breath and it gets to life on My behest.] (Al-Ma’ida – 110).

The meaning of the above verses is giving life or external existence.

What is the meaning of giving life?

It is the reflection of Allah’s (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) Being on the fact of the creature. No sooner the command of ‘Be’ is given, the thing appears in a specific shape.

What is the meaning of reflection of Allah’s (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) Being?

It is in Quran - هُوَ الظَّاهِرُ وَالْبَاطِنُ ۖ وَهُوَ بِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ عَلِيمٌ [He is the Manifest (apparent) and the Immanent (hidden - but actually present through out the material world) and He is the knower of all things ’ . (Al-Hadeed – 3).

The reflection of Allah’s (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) Being means, the connection of the fact of the creature with Allah’s (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) potentiality/attribute of being ‘Apparent’.

Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) is Manifest (apparent). When He reflects this potentiality on the fact of a creature, it also becomes apparent or it comes into life (for a specific period of time). This is the reason our world is known as ‘the World of Manifestation ' ( Aalam-e-Shahadat - عالمِ شہادت).

In our external existence, we are not separated from His Being. We are apparent within His knowledge. Allah's (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) is knowledgeable and His Knowledge is His attribute, therefore, cannot be separated from Him.

The World of Manifestation (or our physical world) is made up of matter. To appear in this world, we needed bodies of matter, which were provided to us.

After our death, these bodies have to remain here. This is the reason our bodies are buried under the ground in this world. Later they get decomposed and become part of earth.

Why the things are seen by us only in external existence and not seen when they are in Allah’s (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) knowledge in internal existence?

When Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) commands ‘Be’ to a fact, a contact with Allah’s potentiality of being ‘Apparent’ is established and we become noticeable.

We will explain it by an example. When we look at a thing, the light gets reflected from that thing into our eyes and we see that thing. If it is dark, we cannot see that thing.

Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) is eternal and manifest (apparent). When Allah's Being reflects on the fact of a thing, it also gets manifest and apparent.

Our facts in Allah’s (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) knowledge before our creation can be seen only by Him. No one has access to see those facts, except Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ). Even in their external existence, many things are not known to us which is described as 'Knowledge of Unseen' (علمِ غيب).

It is in Quran - وَلَا يُحِيطُونَ بِشَيْءٍ مِّنْ عِلْمِهِ إِلَّا بِمَا شَاءَ [ And they (Humans) will never compass anything of His Knowledge except that which He wills. ] (Al-Baqara – 255).

The whole cosmos is not separately or independently existing on its own. Every moment, every instant, we require Allah’s (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) assistance to survive.

It is in Quran - لَا تَأْخُذُهُ سِنَةٌ وَلَا نَوْمٌ [ No slumber can seize Allah nor sleep.] (Al-Baqara – 255).

It is His perpetual attention towards us that keeps us going. His Unity is encircling us from all sides. No one is outside the circle of His knowledge. This is the meaning of the following verses and Ahadith.

(i) It is in Quran - وَنَحْنُ أَقْرَبُ إِلَيْهِ مِنْ حَبْلِ الْوَرِيدِ [And We are nearer to him than his jugular vein.] (Qaf - 16)

(ii) It is in Quran - وَفِي أَنفُسِكُمْ ۚ أَفَلَا تُبْصِرُونَ [ And His signs are in your own self, will you not then see. ] (Adh-Dhariyat - 21)

(iii) It is in Quran -- وَهُوَ مَعَكُمْ أَيْنَ مَا كُنتُمْ [ Wherever you are, He is with you.] (Al-Hadid - 4).

(iv) It is in Quran - فَأَيْنَمَا تُوَلُّوا فَثَمَّ وَجْهُ اللَّهِ [ Whichever side you turn, you will find Allah. ] (Al-Baqara - 115)

(v) It is in Hadith - Abdullah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) narrated that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said : 'Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) is not hidden from you'. (Bukhari)

(vi) It is in Hadith - - Allah's Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) was asked 'What is Ihsan?' He (the Prophet ﷺ) replied, 'Ihsan is to pray seeing Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ), and if you are unable to see Him (unable to focus your attention towards Him because of our too much attention on worldly things), know it well that He is seeing you.' (Bukhari, Muslim - part of the Hadith).

Who can see and realize Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) in this world?

One who considers the Unity of Allah (ذاتِ الہى) as the source of all manifestation, and considers the real source to be the Unity of Allah (ذاتِ الہى) and gains Allah’s (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) visualization in such a way that he considers himself a place of manifestation of the Being and sees the reflection of His Being (وجودِ الہى) on the facts of creatures; certainly he recognizes his Sustainer (رب). The one who recognizes Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ), his physical eyes get suspended, and the eyes of his heart get activated and he sees and realizes his Lord all the time.

Who taught us this knowledge? Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) has taught us everything.

O' Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ), I have recited what You have decreed from Your Book, that which You sent down to Your truthful Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم). So to You belongs all praises our Lord. O' Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ), Make me from among those who enforce its obligations, and disallow its forbidden acts and believe in its clear and its ambiguous verses. Aameen, O' Lord of the Worlds.
