Juz 29 -

The Sovereignty

Al-Mulk | Sura # 67 | 30 verses | Makkan

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful

67:1 Blessed is He in Whose hands is the Kingdom of the Universe,  and He has power over all things.

67:2 (He is the One) Who created death and life in order to test which of you is best in deeds.  And He is the Almighty, All Forgiving.

67:3 It is He who created seven heavens in complete harmony with one another. You will not see any discrepancy in the creation of the Most Compassionate (Allah).  Look again, do you see any flaws?

67:4 Then look again, and again, and your sight will return to you dazzled and exhausted.

67:5 We have adorned the lowest sky with lamps, and made them missiles against the devils, for whom We have prepared a torment of most intense fire.

67:6 And for those who disbelieve in their Lord, there will be the punishment of Hell, and worst indeed is that destination.

67:7 As they are hurled into Hell, they would hear it shriek and scream (in anger); it would boil over furiously, as it blazes.

67:8 As though it would burst with fury. Every time a crowd is thrown into it, its wardens will ask,  'did no warner (Prophet) come to you?'

67:9 They will say : 'Yes indeed, a Warner did come to us, but we rejected him and said, Allah has never sent down anything (of revelation), you are only in great error.'

67:10 They will say : 'If we had listened and been wise, we would not have been among the inmates of Hell.'

67:11 Then they will confess their sin. So, away (from the Mercy of Allah) will be the inmates of the blazing fire.

67:12 Indeed, those in awe of their Lord without seeing Him will have forgiveness and a great reward.

67:13 Whether you speak in secret or aloud, surely He is aware of all that is in the breasts.

67:14 How could He not know His Own creation?  For He  is the Most Subtle, All Aware.

67:15 It is He who made the earth subservient to you that you may travel all around it, and eat of things He has provided; and to Him will be your Resurrection.

67:16 Are you secure that He Who is in the Heavens will not make the earth swallow you while it quakes?

67:17 Or are you confident that He who is in heavens would not unleash a violent storm of stones against you?  Then you will know how true My warning was.

67:18 And indeed those before them denied, then see how terrible was My punishment?

67:19 Do they not see the birds above them flying,  wings spread out or folded? Nothing holds them aloft but the Most Compassionate (Allah). All things are within His purview.

67:20 Do you have an army that can support you against the Most Compassionate (Allah)? In fact, the unbelievers are suffering from delusion.

67:21 Who is there that can provide you if He withholds His provision? Nay, they continue to be in pride and they flee (from the truth).

67:22 Is he who walks, stumbles and falls on his face, better guided, or he who walks upright on a straight path?

67:23 Say, (O' People), 'It is He who brought you into being; and gave you hearing and vision and understanding. But you are rarely grateful.'

67:24 Say, 'It is He who has multiplied you throughout the earth, and to Him you will be gathered.'

67:25 And they say, 'When will this promise (the Day of Resurrection) be fulfilled, if what you say is true?'

67:26 Say (O' Prophet  ﷺ), 'The knowledge (of its exact time) is only with Allah, and I am a manifest Warner.'

67:27 But, when they will see it (the punishment on the Day of Resurrection) approaching, the faces of those who disbelieve will change with sadness (turn black), and it will be said (to them) : 'This is the Promise which you were calling for!'

67:28 Say, (O Prophet  ﷺ),  'Consider this,  whether Allah causes me and those with me to die or shows us mercy, (but) who will save the disbelievers from a painful punishment?'

67:29 Say : Our Lord is the the Most Compassionate, in Him we have believed and in Him we have put our trust.   Soon you will find out, which one of us (we or you)  is in the manifest error.'

67:30 Say, 'Have you thought it over? Should (all) your (drinking) water sink underground (and disappear), who can supply you with springs and clean running water (to drink)?'

The Pen

Al-Qalam | Sura # 68 | 52 verses | Makkan

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful

68:1 Noon. (I swear) By the pen and whatever they, (the angels), write.

'Noon' is known as ‘Solemn Verse' (Ayat-e-Muqatta'at - آیتِ مقطعات).

Fourteen Arabic alphabets have been used, in varied combinations, in 14 ‘Solemn Verses' (Ayaat-e-Muqatta'at - آیاتِ مقطعات) in the form of initials of 29 Chapters (سورة) of holy Quran. Saad ( ن ) is one of them.

Since Quran is 'Mubeen' (الْمُبِينِ); its description is clear and manifest. The meanings of all the verses of Quran, including 'Solemn Verses' (آیاتِ مقطعات) are surely known to its principle addressee, ie., Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم). It is also likely that Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) has informed the meanings of these Verses to some of his Sahabah and Awliya Allah.

We believe in whatever is meant by the 'Solemn Verses' (آیاتِ مقطعات) by Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) and His Apostle Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم).

Since we have been commanded to read the Quran carefully and try to understand the significance of every verse of the Quran, we do ponder over these verses. And when we think, by focusing our attention towards Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) and His Apostle Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) for guidance, it comes to our mind that the 'Solemn Verses' (آیاتِ مقطعات) are actually the 'Solemn Titles of Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) given by Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) throughout the Quran. Our understanding is based on the fact that Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) has addressed Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) in the Quran by specific names, like Muzzammil (مزمل - O' beloved who covers self in a coverlet), Muddassir (مدثر - O' beloved, who covers self in a bed sheet). With this understanding, it is most likely that Prophet’s (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) other names / titles have been mentioned in Quran by denoting certain initials/alphabets.

68:2 By the grace of your Lord, you (O' Prophet ﷺ) are not insane.

68:3 And you will have a never ending reward.

68:4 And surely, you (O' Noble Apostle ﷺ) possess exalted  and magnanimous character.

68:5 Soon you will see  and the pagans will (also) see,

68:6 who is deranged.

68:7 Verily your Lord knows those who have gone astray from His path, and He knows those who are guided on the way.

68:8 So (O' Prophet ﷺ) don’t yield to the deniers' (in anything).

68:9 They wish that you should compromise (in religion with them), so they would also compromise with you.

68:10 Pay no heed to any contemptible oath-taker (who swears much with no consideration of truth, and no one will to act on his word),

68:11 or to a defamer that goes about spreading slander,

68:12 the one who prohibits the good, trespasses and defiantly indulges in sinful acts.

68:13 Brute, and on top of all that, an illegitimate child,

68:14 (Simply) because he has been given (a lot of) wealth and children.

68:15 When Our verses are recited to him, he says, (these are) 'Legends of the former people.'

68:16 Soon We shall mark him upon his nose!

68:17 We have tested them in the same way as we tested the dwellers of the garden (in Yemen) when they swore to pluck all the fruits of the garden in the morning,

A similar parable was given in verses 32-44 of Sura al-Kahf about the owners of the two gardens.

68:18 without saying : If Allah wills.

68:19 But a disaster from your Lord came upon it while they slept,

68:20 so the garden became black by the morning, like a pitch dark night (completely ruined).

68:21 And they called out to one another,

68:22 saying, 'Go early to your crop if you want to harvest the fruit.'

68:23 So they departed and whispered in secret low tones (saying),

68:24 'make sure no poor person enters the garden today.'

68:25 And they went, ready to harvest.

68:26 But when they saw the garden, they cried, 'Surely we must have lost our way'.

68:27 'Nay, we have been deprived of our livelihood.'

68:28 The most sensible of them said, 'Did I not urge you to say, Allah willing.'?

68:29 They said, ´Glory be to our Lord! Truly we have been wrongdoers.´

68:30 Then they turned and blamed each other.

68:31 They said,  woe to us, we have certainly been transgressors.

68:32 'We trust our Lord will give us a better garden than this, (for) we are indeed turning to our Lord with hope.'

68:33 That is the (way of Our) punishment (in this world). But the punishment of the Hereafter is certainly far worse, if only they knew.

68:34 Surely, the pious will be rewarded with gardens of delight (Paradise) by their Lord.

68:35 What do the disbelievers think?   Shall We treat the Muslims as We treat the wrongdoing (disbelievers)?

68:36 What is wrong with you, how do you judge.

68:37 Or do you have a scripture in which you read?

68:38 And in it do you find all that you wish for?

68:39 Or do you have oaths from Us, that are binding until the Day of Resurrection, allowing you to have whatever you desire?

68:40 Ask them. Who among them can claim that?

68:41 Or do they have associate gods (supporting this claim)? Then let them bring forth their associate gods, if what they say is true.

68:42 On the Day (of Judgment) when the events shall be unfolded and they shall be called to prostrate (to Allah), but they will not be able to do so.

68:43 They shall stand with eyes downcast, utterly humiliated; because during their safe and sound life in the world they were called upon to prostrate themselves but they refused to do so.

68:44 So leave those who deny this Discourse to Me. We shall lead them step by step to (ruin) in a way they will not know.

68:45 I (only) delay their end for a while, but My retribution for them is strong.

68:46 Or have you (O' Prophet  ﷺ) asked them a wage, so they are heavily burdened from debt?

68:47 Or, do they have the knowledge of the unseen so they may write (their own fate)?

68:48 So (O' Noble Prophet  ﷺ) wait with patience for the Judgment of your Lord and be not like the person of the fish (Prophet Yunus  عليه السلام)  who called on Us  when he was in distress.

68:49 Had he not been shown grace by his Lord, he would have certainly been cast onto the open (shore), while he to be blamed (for that state).

68:50 But his Lord chose him and made him of the righteous.

68:51 Indeed, those who disbelieve would nearly smite you down with their glances when they hear (your recitation of Quran), saying, 'Surely, he is possessed.'

68:52 This (Quran) is indeed a Reminder to all the people of the world.

The Reality

Al-Haaqqa | Sura # 69 | 52 verses | Makkan

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful

69:1 The inevitable Hour.

69:2 What is the inevitable Hour?

69:3 What do you understand by the inevitable Hour?

69:4 Thamud and Aad people denied the Calamity (the  Hour of Judgment)!

69:5 As for Thamud, they were destroyed by the awful Shriek!

69:6 As for Aad, they were destroyed by a furious violent wind,

69:7 which Allah unleashed on them, non-stop for seven nights and eight days, so that you would have seen its people lying dead like trunks of uprooted palm trees.

69:8 Do you see anything left of them?

69:9 The Pharaoh, and those before him, the overturned cities (of Sodom and Gomorrah during the time of Loot  عليه السلام), committed the crime.

69:10 Each disobeying their Lord’s Apostle, so He seized them with a crushing grip.

69:11 Surely! When the water rose beyond limits (during the time of Nooh عليه السلام), We carried you people (your ancestors) in the floating ship,

69:12 so that We may make this a reminder to you, and that attentive ears may grasp it.

69:13 Then when the Trumpet will be blown with one blowing (first one),

69:14 and the earth with all its mountains will be lifted up and crushed into pieces with a single stroke.

69:15 Then on that Day the inevitable Event will befall,

69:16 and skies will split apart, for that Day it will be very frail.

69:17 And the angels will be on all sides,  and on that Day eight angels will bear the Throne of your Lord above them.

69:18 That shall be the day when you (all) will be brought before your Lord, and none of your secrets shall remain hidden.

69:19 Then, the one who is given his record (of deeds) in his right hand would say, (excitedly), 'Here, (let me take a look and) read the record (of my deeds).'

69:20 'I really did believe that (one day), I would have to face the reckoning.'

69:21 So he will have a life of bliss,

69:22 in an elevated garden (in Paradise),

69:23 with fruits (on trees) in bunches which will be low  near at hand.

69:24 (It will be said) : 'Eat and drink at ease, (this is the reward) for what you did in past days (in your life)!

69:25 As for him who is given his record in his left hand, he will say, 'I wish I was never given my record,

69:26 and never knew what my account was.'

69:27 I wish death was the end.

69:28 My wealth has not benefited me.

69:29 My power and arguments (to defend myself) have gone from me!

69:30 (It will be said to the angels) Seize  him and  shackle him,

69:31 then throw him in blazing Fire.

69:32 Then tie him with a chain whose length is seventy cubits.

69:33 For he did not believe in Allah, the Magnificent,

69:34 nor did he encourage feeding of the poor.

69:35 Therefore, he has no friends here today.

69:36 And to eat, he only has the filthy discharge from wounds!

69:37 That none but the evil doers will eat.

69:38 Nay! I swear by all that you can see,

69:39 and whatever you do not see,

69:40 that it is a speech (recitation) of a Noble Apostle.

69:41 And it is not the word (recitation) of a poet;  how little you believe,

69:42 nor the word (recitation) of a soothsayer; how little you remember,

69:43 (It is) a revelation from the Lord of all worlds.

69:44 Had someone (impersonating Our Apostle  ﷺ) made up something in Our Name,

69:45 We would have certainly seized him by his right hand,

69:46 then We would have severed his lifeline,

69:47 and none of you could have prevented it!

69:48 Indeed, this (Quran) is a reminder to those who are mindful (of Allah).

69:49 Surely We know that there are some among you who deny (the Quran),

69:50 and for such disbelievers,  it is indeed a cause of despair.

69:51 And indeed, this (Quran) is the absolute truth.

69:52 So glorify the Name of your Lord, the Supreme.

The Ascending Stairways

Al-Ma'aarij | Sura # 70 | 44 verses | Makkan

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful

70:1 A questioner asked you about the punishment which is bound to happen,

70:2 to the disbelievers, none can avert,

70:3 from Allah, the Lord of pathways of (heavenly) ascent,

70:4 by which the angels and the Spirit (Jibreel  عليه السلام) ascend to Him, on a Day whose length is fifty thousand years.

70:5 So endure (the denial, O Prophet  ﷺ),  with gracious patience.

70:6 Surely! They see it (the Day of judgment) to be far off;

70:7 But we see it quiet near.

70:8 On the Day the sky will be like molten brass,

70:9 and the mountains like tufts of wool;

70:10 and no friend will ask about a friend,

70:11 although, they would see each other.  The criminal, that day, would like to escape punishment by offering his own son as ransom,

70:12 and his wife and his brother,

70:13 his relatives who gave him shelter,

70:14 and everyone on earth, if that could save him.

70:15 But no! There will certainly be a raging Flame,

70:16 that  will scald away the scalps (of the unbelievers).

70:17 It will summon (by name), all those who turned their backs and ran away (from the truth),

70:18 who collected (wealth) but kept it hidden (from spending in the cause of Allah).

70:19 Surely, human has been created very impatient,

70:20 when the evil touches him, he is distressed,

70:21 but when good (fortune) touches him, he is stingy;

70:22 with the exception of those who offer Salah (prayer),

70:23 those who remain steadfast in their prayers,

70:24 and  those who set aside a due share in their wealth,

70:25 for the beggar who asks and for the deprived (who lost property and wealth),

70:26 and those who believe in the Day of Judgment,

70:27 and those who fear the punishment of their Lord.

70:28 They do  not take their Lord's punishment for granted.

70:29 Those who guard their chastity,

70:30 except with their wives or those whom their right hands possess,  so they are not to be blamed.

70:31 As for those who seek to go beyond this, they are transgressors.

70:32 And those who keep their trusts and their covenants.

70:33 And those who stand by their testimonies.

70:34 Those who perform their Salah  devotedly and diligently.

70:35 Those will be honored in the Gardens (Paradise).

70:36 So what is wrong with the unbelievers? Why do they run towards you?

70:37 From the right and the left, in groups (to mock at you)?

70:38 Does every one of them expect to be admitted into a Garden of Bliss?

70:39 But no! Indeed, they (already) know what We created them from.

70:40 So, I swear by the Lord of all points of sunrise in the east , and sunset in the west, that surely We (the Lord of the Worlds) are capable,

70:41 to replace them with (people) better than they; and nothing can prevent Us from doing that.

70:42 So let them indulge (in falsehood) and amuse (themselves) until they face their Day, which they have been warned with.

70:43 The day when they emerge from the graves, hastening, as if racing toward a target,

70:44 with eyes downcast, utterly covered with disgrace. That is the Day they have  been warned of.

Nooh

Nooh | Sura # 71 | 28 verses | Makkan

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful

71:1 Indeed, We sent Nooh (عليه السلام) to his people, (saying), 'Warn your people before a painful punishment comes to them.'

71:2 He said : 'O my People! I am sent towards you as a manifest Warner.

71:3 '(With a message) that you should worship Allah (alone); you should fear Him, and obey me.'

71:4 '(If you do so) He will forgive you your sins and give you respite for an appointed term. Surely, the term of Allah when it comes, cannot be delayed, if you but knew.'

71:5 (After all his efforts were exhausted) he said : 'O my Lord! Surely, I have called my people night and day,

71:6 but the more I called them, the further they ran away.

71:7 Each time I called on them to seek Your pardon, they thrust their fingers in ears and drew their cloaks over their heads, persisting in sin and puffing themselves up with insolent pride.

71:8 Surely, I called them publicly (aloud).

71:9 'Indeed, I (not only) called (and conveyed the message) to them in public, (but) I even reasoned with them in private,

71:10 saying, 'Seek your Lord’s forgiveness,  He is truly Most Forgiving.

71:11 He will send down abundant rain from the sky for you,

71:12 and will provide you with wealth and children and He will give you gardens and rivers.

71:13 And what is the matter with that you don’t have any hope from the Majesty of Allah),

71:14 when He truly created you in stages (of development)?

71:15 Do you not see how Allah created seven heavens, one above the other,

71:16 placing the moon within them as a (reflected) light, and the sun as a (radiant) lamp?

71:17 Allah makes you grow out of the earth like plants.

71:18 Then He will return you into it (the same earth), and bring you forth (to life again on the Day of Resurrection)?

71:19 'And Allah has made for you the earth wide spread and leveled,

71:20 so that you may walk upon its spacious paths.'

71:21 (Eventually),  Nooh (عليه السلام) cried, 'My Lord! They have certainly persisted in disobeying me, and followed (instead) those (elite) whose (abundant) wealth and children only increase them in loss.

71:22 'And they have made a mighty plot,

71:23 urging (their followers), 'Do not abandon your idols, especially Wadd, Suwâ’, Yaghûth, Ya’ûq, and Nasr.’

71:24 'These idols have led many astray. (Surely), You let (no one but) the evil doers increase (and advance) in misguidance.'

71:25 Because of their sins they were drowned (in the flood) and were made to enter the (Hell) Fire. They did not find any help for them against Allah.

71:26 And Nooh (عليه السلام) said, 'My Lord, do not leave a single unbeliever on the face of the earth.'

71:27 For if You spare (any of) them, they will certainly mislead Your servants, and give birth only to (wicked) sinners and staunch disbelievers.

71:28 'O My Lord! Forgive me, my parents and every true believer who seeks refuge in my house, and all believing men and believing women. As to the wrongdoers, grant them increase in nothing but destruction.'

The Jinn

Al-Jinn | Sura # 72 | 28 verses | Makkan

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful

72:1 Say, (O Prophet  ﷺ), 'It is revealed to me that a group of jinns listened (to the Quran) and said (to their fellow jinns) : ‘Indeed, we have heard a wondrous recitation,

72:2 it guides to the Right Way. We have believed in it and we shall never join (in worship) anything with our Lord.

72:3 'Indeed, He, the Exalted and Majestic, did not take a wife or a son.

72:4 But the fools among us had been saying outrageous things about Allah,

72:5 although we had thought that no human or jinn would dare tell a lie about Allah.

72:6 Indeed, some individuals among mankind used to seek protection with some individuals among the jinns, so they caused such jinns to become more arrogant.

72:7 And, those  men (who sought protection of Jinns)  thought,  just as you (jinns) thought that Allah would never raise up (resurrect) anyone (after death).

72:8 And we have sought to reach the heaven but found it filled with stern guards and flaming fires.

72:9 We used to sit there at stations (near first heaven) to steal a hearing, but those who listen now find flaming fire (stars) watching in ambush for them.

72:10 We did not know whether an ill was intended for the dwellers of the earth or whether their Lord intended to guide them.

72:11 'Among us (jinn), there are some that are righteous, and others that are quite the opposite. We follow diverse (and divergent) paths.'

72:12 'And we acknowledge that we cannot escape Allah on Earth, nor can we escape Him if we run.'

72:13 'In fact, when we heard the guidance, we believed it. Thus, whoever believes in his Lord never needs to worry about his (good) deeds losing their worth. Nor shall he ever fear an injustice.'

72:14 And among us are Muslims (who have submitted to their Lord) and those who are deviant.  So (as for) those who are Muslims, it is they who have attained Right Guidance.

72:15 And as for the deviant, they will be fuel for Hell.

72:16 Say (O' Prophet  ﷺ),  'If they (the Makkans) had stood upright on the Right Way (Islam), We would surely have bestowed on them water (rain) in abundance,

72:17 so that We might test them thereby. And those who turn away from the Reminder of their Lord (the Quran), He will cause them to enter in a severe punishment (Hell).

72:18 And the Masajid are built for Allah’s worship alone, so don’t invoke anyone along with Allah.

72:19 And yet, when the servant of Allah (Prophet Muhammad ﷺ) stood up invoking Him in prayer, they (the jinns) just were around him in a dense crowd (to listen to the Prophet’s recitation).'

72:20 Say (O' Prophet  ﷺ), ‘I pray only to my Lord, and I do not ascribe any partner to Him.’

72:21 I do not have control on what harm or guidance may come to you.

72:22 Say, 'None can protect me from Allah, and I shall never find refuge apart from Him.

72:23 'My mission is to deliver what I receive from Allah and make His messages known. As for those who disobey Allah and His Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), they shall be put in the fire of Hell to live therein forever.'

72:24 (Let them wait) till they witness that which they have been warned. Very soon, they will find out whose supporters are weaker and fewer in numbers.

72:25 Say, 'I do not know whether what you are warned will happen soon or whether it will be delayed by my Lord for a (specific) period.'

72:26 (He alone is) the Knower of the unseen, and He does not reveal His unseen to anyone,

72:27 except to the Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) whom He has chosen. Then He makes a band of watching guards (angels) to march before him and behind him,

72:28 to ensure (their protection, as well as a witness ) that the Apostles have  delivered the messages of their Lord, though He (already) knows all about them, and keeps account of everything.'

The Enshrouded One

Al-Muzzammil | Sura # 73 | 20 verses | Makkan

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful

73:1 O' Muzzammil (O' Prophet  ﷺ covered in a sheet).

It is one of the names with which Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) called his beloved Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم).

73:2 Stand in prayers at night, but not the whole night,

73:3 half of it or a little less,

73:4 or a little more, and recite the Quran slowly and distinctly.

73:5 Soon We are going to send you a weighty message  (and entrust you with a momentous mission).

73:6 Indeed, worship in the night is more impactful and suitable for recitation.

73:7 For, during the day you are over-occupied (with several responsibilities).

73:8 (Always) remember the Name of your Lord, and devote yourself to Him wholeheartedly.

73:9 He is the Lord of the east and the west. There is no god but He, therefore, take Him as your Protector.

73:10 And be patient over what they say, and depart from them in a good manner.

73:11 And leave Me to deal with the deniers who have been given certain (worldly) things, and respite for a while.

73:12 Surely, We have fetters (in store to bind them) and a raging Fire,

73:13 choking food, and a painful punishment (in store for them),

73:14 on the Day when the earth and the mountains tremble, and the mountains become heaps of sand.

73:15 O' mankind, We have sent towards you an Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), to bear witness for you, as We sent an Apostle (Musa  عليه السلام) towards Pharaoh before you.

73:16 But Pharaoh disobeyed the Apostle (Musa - عليه السلام), so We seized him with a stern grip.

73:17 If you defy and disobey, how would you go through (the frightful) Day (of Judgment), which would turn even the children gray (old in horror).

73:18 (On that day), the sky will burst asunder; His promise is  bound to be fulfilled.

73:19 This is indeed a Reminder. So let anyone who wishes,  take the way toward his Lord.

73:20 Indeed, Allah knows that,  you and some of those with you, do stand (in Salah) close to two-thirds of the night. Sometimes half the night and sometimes close to one-third (of the night). Allah keeps the count of the day and the night (precisely). He knows that you cannot (always) keep time (so accurately). So He has turned to you with kindness and grace. You may recite as much of the Quran as you easily can.  He knows that (at any given time) some of you would be sick, and others would be traveling in search of Allah´s bounties. Still others would be (engaged in) fighting for the cause of Allah. So recite as much of the Quran as you can, establish Salah, pay Zakat and advance the virtuous loan to Allah. Whatever good deeds you send ahead for yourself are there with Allah. You will receive the rewards for your deeds far better and bigger (than your deeds). Seek the forgiveness of Allah, for Allah is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.

The Cloaked One

Al-Muddaththir | Sura # 74 | 56 verses | Makkan

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful

74:1 O' you  (Prophet ﷺ ) covered up (in your cloak.)!

Muddaththir is one of the names with which Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) called his beloved Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم).

74:2 Get up and warn (all)

74:3 Proclaim the greatness of your Lord.

74:4 Cleanse and keep your clothes purified.

74:5 Keep  away from uncleanliness,

74:6 Do not expect any gain (in return) for favors to others (except from your Lord).

74:7 Endure (adversity of people) with patience, for the sake of your Lord.

74:8 (Warn everyone saying) When the day the trumpet sounds,

74:9 surely, that Day will be a hard Day.

74:10 Not at all an easy day for the unbelievers.

74:11 Leave Me and the one (Al-Walid Ibn al-Mughirah) whom I created, alone.

74:12 And to whom I have given  abundant wealth,

74:13 and sons to stand by his side.

74:14 And made life very easy for him.

The above verses refers to a prominent Chieftain of Quraish al-Walid Ibn Mughaira.

It is related by Ikrimah from Ibn Abbas (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) that Walid ibn al-Mughirah went to the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) and listened to the verses of Quran and it looked his heart softened listening to it. When Abu Jahl heard about it, he went to him and said : 'O uncle, your clan want to collect money to give it to you, for you went to (Prophet) Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) exposing yourself to his message'. He said : 'The Quraish know it well that I am among its wealthiest'. Abu Jahl said, 'then say something about him which will let your people know that you condemn and dislike him'. He said : 'But what shall I say? By Allah, there is not a man among you who is more knowledgeable about poetry and its composition than me. By Allah, what he says (the Quran) does not resemble any poetry. By Allah, the speech which he utters is sweet and graceful, fruitful at the top, copious at the bottom; it has the upper hand and nothing has the upper hand over it. But let me think about what I shall say about it. 'Then he said : 'This (Quran) is nothing but the magic from the past'. (verse 24), which he simply learnt from others'.

In other narrations, it is stated that Al-Walid ibn al-Mughirah used to visit the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) and Abu Bakr (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) regularly and the Quraish suspected that he will accept Islam. Abu Jahl then said to him : ‘The Quraish claim that you visit (Prophet) Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) and Abu Bakr Ibn Abi Quhafah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) to share food with them’. Al-Walid said to the Quraish : ‘You are people of noble lineages and sound minds, but you claim that (Prophet) Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) is mad. Have you ever seen him seized by a bout of madness?’ They said : ‘No!’ He said : ‘And you claim that he is a soothsayer; have you ever seen him soothsaying?’ They said : ‘No!’ He said : ‘You claim that he is a poet; have you ever heard him utter poetry?’ They said : ‘No!’ He said: ‘You claim that he is a liar; have you ever caught him lying?’ They said : ‘No!’ The Quraish said to al-Walid : ‘What is he, then?’ He thought for a while, looked and frowned and then said : ‘He is nothing but a sorcerer’. Then the verses of Quran were revealed about him.

Al-Walid was very rich and a famous poet of Arabia and knew the truthfulness of the Quran and of Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) but just to appease his fellow Makkans and to safeguard his Chieftainship, he lied to his people.

74:15 Yet, he (greedily) desires that I should give him still more.

74:16 By no means! Because he has stubbornly denied Our revelations.

74:17 Soon, I will impose a dreadful torment upon him.

74:18 Indeed, he thought and deliberated.

74:19 So may he be destroyed (for) how he deliberated.

74:20 Then may he be destroyed (for) how he deliberated.

74:21 Then he looked (all around to create a psychological atmosphere through his expressions).

74:22 Then he viewed with displeasure in a bad tempered way.

74:23 Then he turned back in arrogance.

74:24 And said : 'This (Quran) is nothing but the magic from the past.

74:25 This is nothing but the word of a human being.

74:26 Soon I will burn him in Hell.

74:27 And what will make you realize what Hell is?

74:28 It does not spare (any sinner), nor does it leave (anything not burnt)!

74:29 It scorches people's skin.

74:30 Over it are nineteen (angels as  keepers of Hell).

74:31 We have chosen to appoint the angels as wardens over Hell, and We let their number be a trial for the unbelievers. So that, those given the scriptures may believe, and the believers may increase in their belief. Both; those given the scriptures,  and the believers, may not entertain doubts. Yet, those with disease in their hearts, and the unbelievers, would still say, 'What does Allah mean by this example?' Thus, Allah leads astray whom He wants, and guides whom He wants. No one knows the soldiers of Allah except He.  This is nothing but a reminder for the people.

74:32 But no! By the moon,

74:33 and the night as it retreats,

74:34 and by the dawn when it brightens,

74:35 surely, it (Hell) is one of the greatest signs,

74:36 a warning to human beings,

74:37 to any of you that chooses to go forward (by righteous deeds), or remain behind (in sins).

74:38 Every person is held in pledge for all that he has done.

74:39 Except the people (righteous ones) of the right hand,

74:40 who will be in Gardens, asking one another

74:41 about the wicked.

74:42 (They will ask the people in Hell) 'What has landed you in Hell?'

74:43 They will reply, 'We were not of those who prayed,

74:44 we did not feed the poor.

74:45 And we used to indulge in vain talk with those who indulged (in mocking the believers).

74:46 And we used to deny the Day of Judgement,

74:47 until there came to us the certainty (death).

74:48 So the pleas of intercessors will be of no benefit to them.

74:49 Then what is wrong with them (disbelievers) that they turn away from receiving the admonition?

74:50 As if they were panicked donkeys,

74:51 fleeing from the lion

74:52 In fact, each one of them wishes to be given a (personal) letter (from Allah) for all (to read).

74:53 But no! In fact, they do not fear the Hereafter.

74:54 Nay, surely, this (Quran) is an admonition.

74:55 Whoever wants, may heed (its warning).

74:56 But they will not heed unless Allah so wills. He is Worthy of being feared, and He is the One Who forgives!

The Resurrection

Al-Qiyaama | Sura # 75 | 40 verses | Makkan

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful

75:1 I do swear by the Day of Judgment!

75:2 And I swear by the self-reproaching Nafs.'

75:3 Does the human being think that We will not reassemble his bones?

75:4 Yes indeed. We can reshape even his fingertips.

75:5 Yet the human being wants to deny what lies ahead of him.

Ibn Abbas (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said the meaning of (لِيَفْجُرَ أَمَامَهُ) is ‘the human being keeps on doing sins and says soon I will repent, and from now on I will do good deeds’.

75:6 He asks, 'When is the Day of Resurrection?'

75:7 Well, it will come (and) when (it comes) the sight shall be dazed,

75:8 the moon will be eclipsed,

75:9 and the sun and the moon are joined (together).

75:10 On that Day one will cry, 'Where is the escape?'

75:11 No, indeed, there will be no refuge.

75:12 On that Day all will end up before your Lord.

75:13 On that Day the Human being will be informed of all deeds he put forward for this day and everything that should have been left behind.

75:14 Nay! Mankind will be witness against themselves (body parts will speak about deeds),

75:15 despite the excuses they come up with.

75:16 (O' Noble Prophet  ﷺ) There is no need  to repeat the verses by your tongue to memorize them  (during the revelation of Quran).

75:17 It is certainly upon Us to (make you) remember it  and recite (to the people).

75:18 So once We have recited a revelation (through Jibreel  عليه السلام), follow its recitation (closely).

75:19 then surely, it is for Us to make it clear to you,

75:20 Nay, (O' Mankind) the fact is that you people love this (worldly) brief life,

75:21 and neglect the Hereafter.

75:22 On that Day, some faces will be bright,

75:23 looking at their Lord.

75:24 And (other) faces will be gloomy,

75:25 anticipating something devastating to befall upon them.

75:26 Nay, when a man’s soul is about to leave and reaches to the throat,

75:27 and those around him cry : 'Is there any healer to help?'

75:28 Then man will conclude that it was the time of departure from this world,

75:29 and (then) their feet are tied together (in a shroud).

75:30 That Day the journey is to your Lord.

75:31 So he (disbeliever) neither believed nor prayed;

75:32 but persisted in denial and turned away,

75:33 then went to their own people, walking boastfully.

75:34 Woe to you (O' disbeliever)! And then (again) woe to you!

75:35 (Again) woe to you (O' disbeliever)! And then (again) woe to you!

75:36 Did man think that he would be left unchecked (and never be called to account)?

75:37 Was he not once a drop of emitted semen?

75:38 Then, he became a clot, and He (Allah) gave him the form and proportions.

75:39 And from the clot, He created two genders, male and female.

75:40 (Then) Is not He Able to give life to the dead?

Man

Al-Insaan | Sura # 76 | 31 verses | Madinan

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful

76:1 Indeed there has been a time for man, when even his name did not exist anywhere.

76:2 We have certainly created man from a drop of mixed semen, (in order) to test him. Therefore, We made him capable of hearing and seeing!

76:3 Indeed, We (also) showed man the (right) path. (Now), he may either (accept and) be grateful, or reject (and be ungrateful).

76:4 Indeed, We have prepared for the disbelievers chains, shackles, and a blazing Fire.

76:5 Surely, the righteous shall drink from a cup (of wine) mixed with water from a spring in Paradise called Kaafur,

76:6 from a gushing spring at which the servants of Allah will refresh themselves, and shall be able to take out its channels from place to place at their will.

76:7 They are the ones who fulfill their vows and fear a Day whose evil will be widespread.

76:8 Who feed the poor, the orphan, and the captive for the love (of Allah),

76:9 saying, 'We feed you for the sake of Allah. We want neither compensation, nor gratitude from you.

76:10 For we fear from our Lord's torment (of the sinful) on a very distressful Day.'

76:11 So Allah will save them from the evil of that Day, and bestow on them a radiant light and joy,

76:12 and will reward them (Paradise) and garments of silk because they were patient.

76:13 They would (relax) reclining  on couches. They shall neither be troubled by the heat of the sun, nor by the excessive biting cold.

76:14 The trees of paradise will spread their shade around them, and their fruits will hang in clusters within their easy reach.

76:15 And they will be served in the round dishes of silver, cups of crystal.

76:16 Goblets made of crystal clear silver would be filled to measure, as per their wishes.

76:17 They will also be given to drink a cup (of pure wine) that is mixed with ginger,

76:18 from a spring there, called  Salsabîl.

76:19 And they will be attended by boys (servants) of everlasting youth. If you see them, you would think them like scattered pearls.

76:20 And which ever direction you look (in Paradise), you will see blessings and the splendor of a great Kingdom.

76:21 The honoring garments (of the people of Paradise) will be made of fine green silk with gold embroidery. They will be adorned with bracelets of silver and their Lord will give them pure drink.

76:22 (And it will be said ), 'Indeed, this is for you a reward, and your efforts (in the world) have been appreciated.'

76:23 Indeed, it is We Who have revealed the Quran to you (O Prophet  ﷺ) in stages.

76:24 So be patient with your Lord’s decree, and do not yield to any evildoer or disbeliever from among them.

76:25 And do Zikr of the name of your Lord every morning and afternoon;

76:26 prostrate yourself to Him at night and glorify Him during long night Hours.

76:27 These unbelievers love the transitory life of this world and neglect the heavy Day that is coming ahead.

76:28 It is We Who created them. We gave them their strength and vigor. Whenever We wish, We can replace them all together. We can easily bring in their place, others like them.

76:29 Indeed, this (Quran) is a reminder! (Now), whoever wishes may follow the path (that leads) to his Lord.

76:30 But you (people) cannot will anything, unless Allah wills it so.  Indeed, Allah is all Knowing, All Wise.

76:31 He admits to His mercy whom He wills, and for the wrongdoers He has prepared a painful punishment.

The Emissaries

Al-Mursalaat | Sura # 77 | 50 verses | Makkan

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful

77:1 (I swear) By those (winds) sent forth in gusts.

77:2 By the raging hurricanes.

77:3 By the winds that lift up and scatter the clouds to their distant places,

77:4 then separate them one from another.

77:5 By those (angels) who bring down the Reminder (to the Apostles),

77:6 to end all argument or to warn.

77:7 What you are being promised, (the Day of Judgement), will very surely occur.

77:8 So when the stars are extinguished,

77:9 the sky bursts asunder,

77:10 when the mountains will be blown away (like dust),

77:11 And when all the Apostles are summoned (to bear witness).

77:12 For which Day has all this been set?

77:13 For the day of Decision.

77:14 And what do you know about the Day of Decision?

77:15 Woe on that Day to the deniers (of the Day of Judgment)!

77:16 Did We not destroy earlier disbelievers?

77:17 And We shall do the same to later generations who will follow them.

77:18 This is how We deal with the wicked.

77:19 Woe on that Day to the deniers (of the Day of Judgment)!

77:20 Did We not create you from an insignificant liquid?

77:21 Which We placed in  a secure resting place (mother's womb),

77:22 for a known period.

77:23 Thus have We determined (everything related to your existence), and how excellent We are in determining!

77:24 Woe on that Day to the deniers (of the Day of Judgment)!

77:25 Have We not made the earth a home,

77:26 for the living and the dead,

77:27 And set therein mountains firm, lofty in stature, and given you to drink the sweet water (gushing out of them).

77:28  Woe on that Day to the deniers (of the Day of judgment)!

77:29  (They will be told), 'Proceed to that which you used to deny.'

77:30  You depart towards the shadow (of Hell Fire smoke ascending) in 3 columns,

77:31  that is actually not a shade and will not prevent you from the (heat of the) flame.'

77:32  Indeed, it will hurl sparks as tall as a (lofty) forts.

77:33 'As if there were (a string of) yellow camels (marching swiftly).'

77:34 Woe on that Day to the deniers (of the Day of Judgment)!

77:35 That will be the Day when they shall not be able to speak,

77:36 nor will they be permitted to offer excuses.

77:37 Woe on that Day to the deniers (of the Day of Judgment)!

77:38 Such will be the Day of decision! We will bring you and your previous generations together!

77:39 'So if you have a scheme (to save yourselves), then use it against Me.'

77:40 Woe on that Day to the deniers (of the Day of Judgment)!

77:41 The pious ones (that day) would be amidst cool shades and fountains,

77:42 and they will have whatever fruits they desire.

77:43 (It will be said) 'Eat and drink and enjoy, it as a reward for your deeds.'

77:44 Surely this is how We reward the righteous.

77:45 Woe on that Day to the deniers (of the Day of Judgment)!

77:46 (O' disbelievers)! Eat and enjoy yourselves (in this world) for a little while.  Surely, you are the criminals.

77:47 Woe on that Day to the deniers (of the Day of Judgment)!

77:48 When it is said to them : 'Bow down yourself (in prayer before Allah)!' They do not bow down.

77:49 Woe on that Day to the deniers (of the Day of Judgment)!

77:50 So what message after this (the Quran) would they believe in?
