The Pleading Woman
Al-Mujaadilah | Sura # 58 | 22 verses | Madinan
In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful
58:1 Allah has indeed heard the talk of the woman (Khawlah bint Tha‘labah, who had been divorced by her Husband Aus bin As-Samit ) saying : 'You are to me like my mother' (which was a practice for divorce among pagan Arabs), who pleaded with you against her husband and made her complaint to Allah, and Allah has heard what you said to each other. Allah hears all and sees all.
It is reported in Ahadith that when Khawlah bin Tha'labah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) was pleading with the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) about the action of her husband (in divorcing her by a pre-Islamic custom of Zihar) that his action will ruin her children, the verses about Zihar in this Sura were revealed.
Zihar was a practice among Arabs in which a husband would say to his wife : 'you are to me like the back of my mother' (أنتِ عليَّ كَظَهرِ أمي). This meant that 'you are unlawful for me in conjugal relations. This was done to deprive her rights and keep her like a captive and not letting her marry anyone else. Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) forbade this pre-Islamic practice.
It is in Hadith - Khuwaylah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا), the daughter of Malik ibn Tha'labah narrated that, ‘her husband, Aws ibn as-Samit (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ), pronounced the words, you are like my mother. So, I came to the Apostle of Allah, complaining to him about my husband.’ The Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) disputed with me and said, ‘remain dutiful to Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ), he is your cousin.’ I continued (complaining) until the Qur'anic verse came down, [Allah has indeed heard the talk of the woman (Khawlah bint Tha‘labah, who had been divorced by her Husband Aus bin As-Samit ) saying : 'You are to me like my mother' (which was a practice for divorce among pagan Arabs), who pleaded with you against her husband and made her complaint to Allah, and Allah has heard what you said to each other. Allah hears all and sees all.] (Al-Mujaadilah - 1) till the prescription of expiation. The Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) then said, ‘he should set free a slave.’ She said, ‘He cannot afford it.’ He said, ‘he should fast for two consecutive months.’ She said, ‘Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), he is an old man; he cannot keep fasts.’ He said, ‘he should feed sixty poor people.’ She said, ‘he has nothing which he may give in alms.’ At that moment an Araq (date-basket holding fifteen or sixteen sa's) was brought to the Prophet I said, ‘I shall help him with another date-basket (Araq).’ He said, ‘you have done well. Go and feed sixty poor people on his behalf and return to your cousin.’ The narrator said, an Araq holds sixty sa's of dates. Imam Abu Dawud said, ‘she atoned on his behalf without seeking his permission.’ (Sunan Abu Dawood, Book 13, Hadith # 40)
58:2 Those of you who divorce their wives by (the pagan practice of) Zihar (calling wives to be like their mothers) should know that they are not their mothers. Their mothers are only those who gave birth to them. Surely the words they utter are absurd and false. Allah could punish them for this but He forgave them, surely Allah is All Pardoning, All Forgiving.
58:3 And those who divorce their wives by Zihar, then wish to go back (free themselves) from what they said, the penalty is to free a captive before they touch each other. This is prescribed for you (so that you may not return to such an evil thing). Allah is All-Aware of what you do.
58:4 And he who does not find (money for freeing a captive), then must fast for 2 successive months before they both touch each other. For him who is unable to do so (fast), he shall feed 60 poor people. This is (enjoined) in order that you may believe in Allah and His Apostle These are the limits of Allah. For disbelievers, there is a painful punishment.
58:5 Indeed, those who defy Allah and His Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) will be debased, just like those before them. We have certainly sent down clear revelations. And the disbelievers will suffer a humiliating punishment.
58:6 On the Day of Judgment Allah will raise them all, back to life, then inform them about what they have done. Allah has kept full record of their deeds even though they may have forgotten, for Allah is a witness over all things.
58:7 Do not you realize that Allah knows everything in the heavens and on earth? There is no secret conversation between three people, but He is their fourth; nor between five, but He is their sixth; nor between less than that, nor more, but He is with them wherever they are. Then, on the Day of Resurrection, He will inform them of what they did. Allah has knowledge of all the things.
58:8 Have you not seen those who were forbidden from secret talks, yet they (always) return to what they were forbidden from, conspiring in sin, aggression, and disobedience to the Apostle And when they come to you (O' Apostle ﷺ), they greet you not as Allah greets you, and say to one another, 'Why does Allah not punish us for what we say?' Hell is enough for them, they will burn in it. And what an evil destination (is Hell)!
58:9 O' believers! When you converse privately, let it not be for sin, aggression, or disobedience to the Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), but let it be for goodness and righteousness. And fear Allah, to Whom you will (all) be gathered.
58:10 Secret counsels (conspiracies) are only from Satan so that he may cause grief to those who believe. But he cannot harm them in anything except with the permission of Allah. In Allah let the believers put their trust.
58:11 O' believers! When you are asked to make room in your meetings, make room, Allah will make room for you in the Hereafter. And if you are told to rise up, then rise up. Allah will raise to higher ranks those of you who have faith and knowledge. Allah is aware of all your actions.
Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) is teaching the etiquette to Muslims how to organize themselves in their large assemblies of all kinds. There are many related Ahadith in this context.
58:12 O you who believe! When you wish to consult the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) in private, spend something in charity before your private consultation. That will be better and purer for you. But if you don’t find (anything), then surely, Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
Ibn Jarir reported that Abdullah bin Abbas (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) narrated that this command was given because the Muslims had started requesting the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) for private counsel much too frequently even about general issues that related to everyone, and this had put him to great inconvenience. Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) wanted to put an end to it.
58:13 Are you afraid to spend in charity before your private consultation (with the Prophet ﷺ )? If you cannot afford, Allah will forgive you; so establish prayer and give obligatory charity and obey Allah and His Apostle Allah is Well Aware of what you do.
58:14 Have you (O' Prophet ﷺ ) not seen those (hypocrites) who take as friends those who are under the Wrath of Allah? They are neither of you nor of them and they knowingly swear to a lie.
58:15 Allah has prepared for them severe punishment. Indeed evil is that which they do.
58:16 They use their oaths as shields, and debar others from the Way of Allah. They shall have a humiliating punishment.
58:17 Their wealth and their children will not help them a bit against Allah! They are the people of the (Hell) Fire, and in it they shall remain forever!
58:18 On the Day when Allah will raise them all to life, they will swear to Him as they now swear to you, thinking that their oaths will help them. By no means (their false oaths will help them)! Surely they are the liars.
58:19 Satan has taken hold of them, causing them to forget the remembrance of Allah. They are the party of Satan. Surely Satan’s party is bound to lose.
58:20 Disgrace will strike those who oppose Allah and His Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) (in both the worlds).
58:21 Allah has decreed : 'Surely! I and My Apostles will prevail (be victorious).' Surely, Allah is All Powerful, Almighty.
58:22 (O' truthful believers) You will never find any people who (truthfully) believe in Allah and the Last Day on friendly terms with those who oppose Allah and His Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), even though they are their fathers, or their sons, or their brothers, or their kindred. For such, He has inscribed faith in their hearts and has strengthened them with a spirit from Him. And He will admit them to Gardens (Paradise) under which rivers flow, to reside in it forever. Allah will be pleased with them, and they will be pleased with Him. They belong to Allah's party. Verily Allah's party shall prosper.
The Exile
Al-Hashr | Sura # 59 | 24 verses | Madinan
In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful
59:1 All that exists in the heavens and the earth is praising Allah's limitless glory. He is the Almighty, All Wise.
59:2 It is He Who drove the disbelievers, the people of the book (the Jews of Banu An-Nadhir), from their homes at the very start of assembly (the siege against them). You never thought they would depart (without resistance). And they thought their strongholds would defend them against Allah. But Allah came upon them from where they least expected. He cast terror in their hearts, so they ruined their homes with their own hands, and the hands of the believers. So, learn the lesson, O you, endowed with sights!
Banu An-Nadhir was a Jewish community living in Madina. All tribes in Madina were the signatories to the Constitution of Madina (دستور المدينة) introduced by Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم). As per Article 37 of the Constitution of Madina :
وأن على اليهود نفقتهم وعلى المسلمين نفقتهم ، وأن بينهم النصر على من حارب أهل هذه الصحيفة ، وأن بينهم النصح والنصيحة والبر دون الإثم - وأنه لا يأثم أمره بحليفه وأن النصر للمظلوم [ The Jews must bear their expense and the Muslims must bear their expenses. They help one another against those who make war against the people of this document. Between them is good understanding, honorable dealing, and honesty, not treachery. Help (is to be given) to whoever is wronged.]
In spite of the signatory to the above, the Jews of Banu An-Nadhir used to plot against the Muslims. Abdur Razzaq in his Musannaf, 5/359-60; Ibn Hajar in Fath al Bari, 7/331; Abu Dawood in his Sunan, 2/139-40, reported that an attempt on the life of Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) was made by Jews of Banu An-Nadhir on the instigation of Makkan Quraish.
The Jews sent a message to the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), inviting him to come with 30 of his companions to meet them. They promised to come out with a similar number of their Rabbis, to a designated place in Madinah, where they would listen to him. If the rabbis are convinced of what he said, then all Jews of their tribe would accept Islamic faith. When the two parties approached each other, the Jews suggested that (there was no need for 30 people on each side). Let the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) and three of his companions meet with three of their rabbis privately, and if he convinced them, then Banu an Nadir would accept Islam. Since it was a formal preaching meeting, no one was allowed to carry weapons. However, the three rabbis carried daggers hidden in their clothing to attack the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) and his three companions.
A Jewish woman, whose brother had become Muslim, knew about this plot and informed Muslims about it. Thus the meeting was cancelled. The Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) took a punitive action against the Jewish tribe for their attempt on his life. The Muslims besieged Banu An-Nadhir. Within a few days they surrendered. They were asked to leave Madina along with their belongings. It is reported that before leaving, the Jews destroyed their homes and carried even the doors of their houses.
As per the authentic reports in Ahadith, the expulsion of Banu An-Nadhir took place in 2 AH after the Battle of Badr. However, there are some differences of opinions among scholars as to the timing of the expulsion of Banu An-Nadhir. Some consider that it took place in the 3 AH, after the battle of Uhad.
59:3 Had Allah not decreed exile for them, He would have certainly punished them in this world. And in the Hereafter they will suffer the punishment of the Fire.
59:4 That is because they opposed Allah and His Apostle Allah is severe in punishment toward anyone opposing Allah.
59:5 It was with Allah´s permission that you cut down (some of) the date palm trees and left (others) standing on their stems, in order that He might disgrace the evildoers.
59:6 You did not charge with horse or camel for whatever (spoils) Allah gave His Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) from them. In any case, Allah gives authority to His Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) over whomsoever He please. Allah has power over all things.
There are two types of earnings as a result of the war. One is, which is earned after fighting the battle. This is known as War booty (Ghaneemah - غنيمة). The other is, which is earned, without fighting the battle when the opposing side surrenders without any resistance. This is known as fay (the spoils of war). There are different rules for the distribution of these two earnings.
(i) The war booty is divided into 5 parts, 4 of which are distributed among the members of the army who fought the war. The 5th part is used as per the following commandment.
It is in Quran [And know that whatever of war-booty that you may gain, verily, one-fifth (1/5th) of it is assigned to Allah, and to the Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), and to the near relatives (of the Apostle ﷺ, and also) the orphans, the poor and the wayfarer.] (al-Anfaal -41).
(ii) The fay (spoils of war) is also divided into 5 parts, the distribution of which is described in the following verses.
In war booty, all recipients become owners of their share. However, in case of Fay, the physical assets (like orchards, etc.,) became the property of the state; from the income of which, all beneficiaries were supported on a long or short term basis. The Head of the State was the Custodian of the Fay (spoils of war).
During the lifetime of Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), he personally distributed from the income of fay properties, including the orchards of Fadak, to all assigned beneficiaries. After his death, the distribution was continued in the same way by Khulafa-e-Rashideen, Abu Bakr, Umar, Othman and Ali
59:7 Whatever spoils from the dwellers of the township Allah has bestowed on His Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), shall belong to Allah, His Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), Apostle's (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) relatives, and to the orphans, the needy and the travelers in need; so that it may not become the property of the rich among you. Whatever the Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) gives you, take it and from whatever he forbids you, refrain from it. Fear Allah; for Allah is stern in retribution.
59:8 A share of the spoils shall be given to the indigent immigrants who were driven out of their homes and their possessions, and are seeking Allah’s grace and His approval and who want to help in Allah's (cause) and His Apostle Such are indeed the true believers.
59:9 As for those who had settled in the city and (embraced) the faith before (the arrival of) the emigrants, they love whoever immigrates to them, never having a desire in their hearts for whatever (of the gains) is given to the emigrants. They give (the emigrants) preference over themselves even though they may be in need. And whoever is saved from the selfishness of his inner self (نَفْسِهِ), it is they who are (truly) successful.
59:10 And those who came after them say, 'Our Lord! Forgive us and our brothers who have preceded us in faith and do not put any hatred in our hearts against those who have believed. Our Lord! You are Most Kind and Most Merciful.
59:11 Have you (O' Prophet ﷺ) not observed those who were hypocrites? They say to their fellow disbelievers among the people of the Scripture : 'If you are expelled, we indeed will go out with you. We will never obey anyone against you. Even if you are attacked, we will indeed help you.' But Allah is witness that surely they are liars.
59:12 If the People of the Book are driven out, they will never go with them, nor, if the people of the Book are attacked, will they help them, and even if they help them, they will turn their backs; leaving them with no help at all.
59:13 Indeed, there is more fear in their hearts for you (believers) than for Allah. That is because they are a people who do not comprehend (Allah).
59:14 They will never fight against you together except in fortified territories or from behind walls. Their enmity among themselves is very strong. You think them as united but their hearts are divided. This is because they are a people who do not understand.
59:15 They are like their immediate predecessors (Jews of Banu Qainuqa); they tasted the evil result of their deeds, for them will be a painful torment.
The Jews of Banu Qainuqa tribe were the first to violate the terms of the Constitution of Madina. They had a walled stronghold at the outskirts of Madina. They were arrogant people and were involved in all kinds of trouble in Madina, including killings. They used to behave like a Mafia. In spite of their behavior, the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) remained patient for a long time and kept on advising them to behave like civilized citizens.
The trouble between them and Muslims came to a peak when the Jews of Banu Qainuqa undressed a Muslim woman on the street, took her cloths in their hands and began to jeer and tease her in front of a crowd. Among the crowd, there was a Muslim male who tried to defend the woman and in the fight he killed a Jew and was himself killed by other Jews.
When this incident was reported to the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), he demanded apology from Banu Qainuqa and compensation to the victims and assurance that this kind of activities will be stopped in future. Bani Qainuqa ignored these demands. Thus the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) ordered action against them. Their stronghold was besieged by Muslims. The Muslims blocked all routes from where any help could come to them from outside. After a fortnight, Bani Qainuqa surrendered. Under the Jewish law, all males among their could be beheaded, and their females and children could be taken as slaves. But the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) took a lenient view, and merely ordered their expulsion from Madina in 2 AH.
59:16 (They are) like Satan who says to man : 'Do not believe;' and when he becomes a disbeliever, he says : 'I have nothing to do with you. I fear Allah, the Lord of all the worlds.'
59:17 So the end of both (Satan and those whom he has deceived, and the hypocrites and those whom they have betrayed) is that they will find themselves in the Fire to abide therein (for ever). That is the retribution of the wrongdoers.'
59:18 O' you who believe, be fearful of Allah. Let each one consider what (deeds) he has sent in advance for the morrow (After life), and fear Allah. Surely Allah is aware of what you do.
59:19 Be not like those who forgot Allah, as a result Allah caused them to forget themselves, it is they who are the transgressors.
A person who forgets about his Lord, surely, will forget about himself as who is he? The Hadith - من عرفه نفسه فقد عرفه ربه [ Whosoever knows himself, knows about his Lord.] is in total conformity with the above verse.
59:20 The companions of fire and the dwellers of paradise are not equal. It is the dwellers of paradise, who are certainly the successful ones.
59:21 Had We sent down this Quran upon a mountain, you would have certainly seen it humbled and torn apart in awe of Allah. We set forth such comparisons for people, (so) perhaps they may reflect.
59:22 He is Allah, there is no god but He, the Knower of the unseen and seen. He is Most Compassionate and Most Merciful.
59:23 He is Allah, there is no god but He, the Sovereign, the Sacrosanct, the Peace Giver, the Faith Giver, the Overseer, the Almighty, the Powerful, the Supremely Great. May Allah be exalted in His glory, above all they associate with Him. !
59:24 He is Allah, the Creator, the Inventor of all things, and the Bestower of forms. To Him belongs the best names. All that are in the heavens and the earth glorify Him. And He is the Almighty, the All Wise.

Al-Mumtahana | Sura # 60 | 13 verses | Madinan
In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful
60:1 O believers! Do not take My enemies and yours as trusted allies, showing them affection even though they deny what has come to you of the truth. They drove the Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) and yourselves out (of Makka), simply for your belief in Allah, your Lord. If you (truly) emigrated to struggle in My cause and seek My approval, (then do not take them as allies), disclosing secrets (of the believers) to the pagans out of affection for them, when I know best whatever you conceal and whatever you reveal. And whoever of you does this has truly strayed from the Right Way.
60:2 If they gain the upper hand over you, they would be your (open) enemies, unleashing their hands and tongues to harm you, and wishing that you would abandon faith.
60:3 On the Day of Resurrection, neither your relatives nor your children will benefit you. He will judge between you (individually). Allah sees all of what you do.
60:4 Indeed an excellent example has been set for you by Ibrahim (عليه السلام) and those with him. When they said to their people : 'Surely, we are free from you and whatever you worship besides Allah. We reject you. Hostility and hatred shall appear between us and between you forever until you believe in Allah alone.' Except the saying of Ibrahim (عليه السلام) to (the brother of) his father : 'Surely, I will ask for forgiveness (from Allah) for you, but I have no power to get anything for you from Allah.' (They prayed) : 'Our Lord! In You (alone) we put our trust, to You (alone) we turn in repentance, and to You (alone) is our final return.
It is reported that Hadhrat Ibrahim (عليه السلام) grew up under the guardianship of his uncle Azar (father's brother), because his father, Tareq died when he was very young.
It is in Hadith Anas Ibn Malik (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) narrates that one day Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) stood on the pulpit and informed (sahabah) the names of his ancestors:
The Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said : Ana, Mohammad Ibn Abdullah, bin Abdul Muttalib, bin Hashim, bin Abd Manaf, bin Qusa'i, bin Kilab, bin Murra, bin Ka'b, bin Lu'ayy, bin Ghalib, bin Fihr, bin Malik, bin an-Nadr, bin Kinanah, bin Khuzaimah, bin Mudrikah, bin Elias, bin Mudar, bin Nizar, bin Ma'ad, bin Adnan, bin Udad, bin Asha'b, bin Saleh, bin Salooq, bin Hameesa, bin Nabad, bin Khizaar, bin Ismail (عليه السلام), bin Ibrahim (عليه السلام), bin Tariq.
(Baihaqi, Hakim, Ahmed, Ibn Kathir in Bidaya wan Nihaya and Ibn Asakir also narrated this Hadith).
It is clear from the above Hadith that the father of Ibrahim (عليه السلام) was Tariq, a Momin; while his uncle Azar was an Idol worshiper
Ibn Jarir al-Tabari in his Tafsir and History book has mentioned that - Azar was not the father of Ibrahim (عليه السلام). ( History of Tabari, Vol. 1, Page 119. and Tafsir-e-Tabari by Ibn Jarir al-Tabari, Vol. 7, page 158).
Ibn Kathir has written in al-Bidaya wan Nihaya - Ibrahim (عليه السلام) was the son of Tariq. When Tareq was 75 years old, Ibrahim (عليه السلام) was born to him. (al-Bidaya wan Nihaya, vol 1, page 139)
Hadhrat Mohammad Abdul Qadeer Siddiqui (رحمتہ اللہ علیہ) has written in his Tafseer-e-Siddiqui that Azar was the brother of the father of Ibrahim (عليه السلام). (Tafseer-e-Siddiqui)
60:5 Our Lord! Do not subject us to the persecution of the disbelievers. Forgive us, our Lord! You (alone) are truly the Almighty, All Wise.'
60:6 In them, (Ibrahim عليه السلام and those with him), there is certainly an excellent example to follow for anyone looking forward to (the meeting with) Allah on the Last Day. And should anyone turn away, Allah is certainly Free of all want and Worthy of all praise.
60:7 (In time), Allah may bring about goodwill between you and those of them you (now) hold as enemies. For Allah is Most Powerful. And Allah is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.
60:8 Allah does not forbid you from dealing kindly and equitably with those who did not fight you because of your faith and did not drive you out of your homes. Allah loves those who are equitable.
60:9 Allah only forbids you to make friendship with those who fought you on account of your faith and drove you out of your homes and backed up others in your expulsion. Those who will take them for friends are indeed the wrongdoers.
60:10 O' believers! When the believing women seek refuge with you, test them. Allah best knows their faith. If you find them true believers, do not send them back to the unbelievers. They are not lawful to the unbelievers, nor are the unbelievers lawful to them. Return to their unbelieving husbands what they have spent on them. There is no blame on you if you marry such women, provided you give them their dowers. Do not hold on to your marriages with unbelieving women. Demand what you have spent on them and let the unbelievers do the same. This is the commandment of Allah which He has decreed between you. Allah is All Knowing, All Wise.
60:11 (Even) if any of your wives leaves you for the disbeliever (without returning the nuptial dowry) still in your turn, pay the disbelievers whose wives leave them for you (an amount) equal to what they had spent. (Always) fear Allah, in Whom you (profess to) believe!
60:12 O' Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), when believing women come to you and swear on oath that they will not associate anything with Allah, nor steal, nor fornicate, nor kill their children, nor accuse others for what they have fabricated themselves, nor disobey you in any rightful thing, then you should accept their allegiance, and ask forgiveness of Allah for them. Certainly Allah is Most Forgiving and Most Merciful.
60:13 O believers! Do not befriend those who have incurred the wrath of Allah. They already have no hope for the Hereafter, just like the disbelievers lying in (their) graves.

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful
61:1 All that is in the heavens and the earth glorifies Allah. He is the Almighty, All Wise.
61:2 O' believers! Why do you say something which you don’t do?
61:3 It is most disliked by Allah that you say that which you don’t do.
61:4 Indeed, Allah loves those who fight in His path, organized and arrayed as if they were a single solid structure.
61:5 (Remember, O Prophet ﷺ), when Musa (عليه السلام) said to his people, 'O my people! Why do you hurt me when you already know I am Allah’s Apostle to you?' So when they (persistently) deviated, Allah caused their hearts to deviate. For Allah does not guide the rebellious people.
61:6 And (remember) when Isa Ibn Maryam (عليه السلام) said : 'O Children of Israel! I am the Apostle of Allah to you, confirming the Torah which came before me, and give you glad tidings of an Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) that will come after me whose name shall be Ahmed (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) (another name of Prophet Mohammad - صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم).' But when he (the Prophet ﷺ) came to them with clear proofs, they said : 'This is plain magic.'
Every single verse of the Quran is addressed to Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) or addressed to the people via the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم).
However, his name Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) has been mentioned in Quran in 4 verses, (i) Aal-e-Imran - 144, (ii) Al-Ahzaab - 40, (iii) Mohammad - 2, and (iv) Al-Fath - 29.
In the above verse, his name 'Ahmed' (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) has been mentioned..
61:7 And who is more unjust than one who invents lies and attributes them to Allah when he is invited to Islam? Allah does not guide unjust people.
61:8 They wish to extinguish Allah’s light with their mouths, but Allah will (certainly) perfect His light, even to the dismay of the disbelievers.
61:9 He is the One Who has sent His Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) with (true) guidance and the religion of truth, making it prevail over all others, even to the dismay of the polytheists.
61:10 O' believers, shall I offer you a bargain which will save you from a painful punishment?
61:11 (It is to) have faith in Allah and His Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), and strive in the cause of Allah with your wealth and your lives. That is best for you, if only you knew.
61:12 (If you do so) He will forgive your sins and admit you into gardens under which rivers flow, and pleasant residences (homes) in gardens of Eden (Paradise), that is the great success.
61:13 And also (He will give you) another blessing which you love, help from Allah (against your enemies) and a near victory. So give glad tidings (O' Prophet ﷺ) to the believers.
61:14 O believers! Be the helpers in Allah's cause, just as Isa Ibn Maryan (عليه السلام) said to his disciples, 'who will be my helper in the cause of Allah?' And the disciples responded, 'we will be your helpers in the cause of Allah.' Then a group from the children of Israel believed in him (Isa عليه السلام) and another group disbelieved. We aided the believers against their enemies, so they became victorious.

Al-Jumu'a | Sura # 62 | 11 verses | Madinan
In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful
62:1 Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth (constantly) glorifies Allah, the King, the Most Sacrosanct, the Almighty, the All Wise.
62:2 It is He Who has raised among the unlettered people an Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) of their own, who recites to them His revelations, purifies them, and teaches them the Book and Wisdom, though prior to this they were in gross error.
The above describes that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) taught Sahabah the Quran, trained them in wisdom and purified their Nufoos.
[Certainly did Allah confer (a great) favor upon the believers when He sent among them an Apostle from themselves, reciting to them His verses and purifying them and teaching them the Book and wisdom, although they had been before in manifest error.] (Aal-e-Imran - 164).
The process of teaching, training and purification of Sahabah was as follows.
(i) Sahabah first accepted Islam on the hands of Prophet Mohammad They gave promise of allegiance (Ba'it - بیعت) by reciting Islamic testimony (کلمہ طیّبہ).
It is in Quran - "إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يُبَايِعُونَكَ إِنَّمَا يُبَايِعُونَ اللَّهَ يَدُ اللَّهِ فَوْقَ أَيْدِيهِمْ ۚ فَمَن نَّكَثَ فَإِنَّمَا يَنكُثُ عَلَىٰ نَفْسِهِ ۖ وَمَنْ أَوْفَىٰ بِمَا عَاهَدَ عَلَيْهُ اللَّهَ فَسَيُؤْتِيهِ أَجْرًا عَظِيمًا" [ Indeed, those who pledge allegiance to you, (O' Prophet ﷺ) they are actually pledging allegiance to Allah. The hand of Allah is over their hands. So he who breaks his word only breaks it to the detriment of himself. And he who fulfills that which he has promised Allah, He will give him a great reward.] (Al-Fath - 10).
Sometimes, the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) took promise of allegiance (بیعت) as repentance for one’s past wrong doings. Sometimes the pledge (بیعت) was taken to shed the last drop of blood in the cause of Islam, as it happened at the time of the conflict of Hudaibiya. The Promise of allegiance was also taken from women.
(ii) After people became Muslims, Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) taught them Quran.
(iii) Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) then trained Sahabah in their day to day living. He also taught them wisdom.
It is in Quran [Indeed in the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) you have an excellent example to follow; for him who hopes in (the meeting with) Allah and the Last Day and does Zikr of Allah extensively.] (Al-Ahzaab - 21)
(iv) When Sahabah sat in the company of Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) their worldly thoughts and ordinary consideration got extincted from their minds and they became exceptionally pious. This aspect is referred in the above Quranic verse as 'purification' ('وَيُزَكِّيهِمْ').
It is in Hadith - Hanzalah Al-Usayyidi (رضئ الله تعالى عنه) said, "O'Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), when we are in your company, and are reminded of Hell-fire and Jannah, we feel as if we are seeing them with our own eyes, but when we go away from you and attend to our wives, children and business, much of these things go out of our minds." Thereupon the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said, "By Him in Whose Hand is my life, if your state of mind remains the same as it is in my presence and you are always busy in the Zikr of Allah, the angels will shake hands with you in your beds and on roads. (Muslim - part of the Hadith).
After Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) left this world, the teaching, training and purification of the people was carried out by Khulafa-e-Rashideen, Sahabah, Aimma and Shuyookh of Ihsan and Awliya Allah.
62:3 He is also sent for others of them who have not yet joined them (become Muslims). He is the Mighty, the Wise.
The above verse describes that the teaching, training and purification started by Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) is still continued by his blessings by the chosen people of his Ummah and it is applicable for all people of the world till the day of resurrection.
62:4 That is the Grace of Allah, which He bestows on whom He wills. And Allah is the Possessor of Mighty Grace.
62:5 The example of those who were entrusted to uphold the Torah, but then failed to uphold it, is that of a donkey who carries huge burdens of books (on his back but understands nothing). How bad is the example of people who deny the Verses of Allah? And Allah does not guide the wrongdoers.
62:6 Say, (O' Prophet ﷺ), 'O Jews! If you claim to be Allah’s chosen (people) out of all humanity, then wish for death, if what you say is true.'
62:7 But they will not wish for it, ever, because of what their hands have done. Allah knows the unjust well.
62:8 Tell them, 'the death from which you are running away, will surely come, then you will be sent back to Him Who knows the unseen and the seen; and He will tell you all that you have been doing.'
62:9 O believers! When the call for Salah is made on Friday (for congregational prayers), hasten to the remembrance of Allah and leave your business (activities). That is better for you if you but knew.
62:10 When Salat-ul-Jumu'a is over, you may disperse in the land and seek the Grace of Allah (by working). Remember Allah much so that you may be successful.
62:11 (Those who are still weak in Iman) when they see some bargain or some sport, they rush to it and leave you standing (during your sermons). Tell them (O Prophet ﷺ), what Allah has in store for them is far better than any sport and bargain, and Allah is the best provider.
The Hypocrites
Al-Munaafiqoon | Sura # 63 | 11 verses | Madinan
In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful
63:1 When the hypocrites come to you (O Prophet ﷺ) they say, 'We bear witness that you are certainly the Apostle of Allah', and indeed Allah knows that you are His Apostle, but Allah bears witness that the hypocrites are profound liars.
63:2 They have taken their oaths as a shield (for their hypocrisy). Thus they hinder people from the Way of Allah. Surely, evil is what they do.
63:3 This is because they believed and then abandoned faith. Therefore, their hearts have been sealed, so they do not comprehend.
63:4 When you see them, their appearance impresses you. And when they speak, you listen to their (impressive) speech. But they are like (worthless) planks of wood leaned (against a wall). They think every cry is against them. They are the enemy, so beware of them. May Allah condemn them! How can they be deluded (from the truth)?
63:5 When it is said to them, 'Come! The Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) will seek forgiveness for you', they turn their heads away. You find them looking away in arrogance (and disdain).
63:6 It makes no difference whether you ask forgiveness for them or not, Allah will not forgive them. Allah does not guide such treacherous people.
63:7 They are the same people who say: 'Do not give anything to those who follow the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) until they have deserted him.' And to Allah belong the treasures of the heavens and the earth; but the hypocrites cannot understand.
63:8 They (hypocrites) say : 'If we return to Madinah, indeed the more honorable (Abdullah bin Ubai bin Salul, the chief hypocrite at Madinah) will expel from there the meaner (Allah’s Apostle ﷺ).' But honor, power and glory belong to Allah, and to His Apostle Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) and to the believers, but the hypocrites don’t know.
It is in Hadith - Zaid bin Arqam (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) narrated that we went out with the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) on a journey and the people suffered from lack of provisions. So, (the hypocrite) Abdullah bin Ubayy said to his companions, ‘do not spend on those who are with Allah's Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), that they may disperse and go away from him.’ He also said, ‘if we return to Al-Madina, indeed, the more honorable will expel therefrom the meaner.’ So, I went to the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) and informed him of that. He sent for Abdullah bin Ubayy and asked him, but Abdullãh bin Ubayy swore that he did not say so. The people said, ‘Zaid (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) told a lie to Allah's Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم).’ What they said distressed me very much. Later, Allah revealed the confirmation of my statement in His Saying – [When the hypocrites come to you.] (Al-Munafiqoon -1). So, the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) called them (the Munafiqeen) that they might ask Allah to forgive them, but they turned their heads aside. Concerning Allah's Saying - خُشُبٌ مُسَنَّدَةٌ [(worthless) planks of wood leaned (against a wall)] (Al-Munafiqoon – 4), Zaid said, ‘they were the most handsome men. (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Bk 65, Hadith # 423)
63:9 O' Believers, do not let your wealth and your children distract you from remembering Allah. Those who do so will be the ones who lose.
63:10 Spend, in charity and in the Cause of Allah, out of the sustenance which We have bestowed on you before that time when death will come to anyone of you, and he shall say : 'O my Lord! If only you would reprieve me for a little so that I could give out everything in charity, and be among the righteous.'
63:11 But Allah does not grant a person respite once its term has come to an end. And Allah is aware of what you do.
Mutual Disillusion
At-Taghabun | Sura # 64 | 18 verses | Madinan
In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful
64:1 Whatever there is in the heavens and whatever there is in the earth glorifies Allah. To Him belongs all sovereignty and to Him belongs all praise, and He has power over all things.
64:2 It is He who created you. Yet some of you deny the truth, and some believe it. Allah sees everything you do.
64:3 He created the heavens and the earth for a purpose. He shaped you (in the womb of your mothers) perfecting your form. And to Him is your final return.
64:4 He knows whatever is in the heavens and the earth. And He knows whatever you conceal and whatever you reveal. For Allah knows what is (hidden) in the hearts.
64:5 (O' Disbelievers) Have you not heard of those who disbelieved before you? So they tasted the result of their evil deeds, and in the Hereafter there shall be a painful punishment for them.
64:6 That was because their Apostles used to come to them with clear proofs, but they said (mockingly), 'How can humans be our guides?' So they persisted in disbelief and turned away. And Allah was not in need (of their faith). For Allah is Self Sufficient, Praiseworthy.
64:7 The disbelievers claim that they will never be resurrected. Say (O' Prophet ﷺ), 'Yes! By my Lord, you will certainly be resurrected and you will be informed of what you did (in the world). That is (very) easy for Allah.
64:8 Therefore, believe in Allah and His Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), and in the light which We have sent down. And Allah is All Aware of what you do.
64:9 The Day when He will gather you all will be the Day of Assembly, which shall be the Day of mutual loss and gain among the people. Those who believe in Allah and do good deeds, He will remove from them their sins and admit them to gardens beneath which rivers flow, to live therein forever, and that will be the supreme achievement.
64:10 But those who disbelieved and denied Our revelations, they will be the inmates of the (Hell) Fire. They will reside in it forever. What an evil destination!
64:11 No calamity befalls (upon anyone) except by Allah’s Will. And whoever has faith in Allah, He will (rightly) guide their hearts (through the adversity). And Allah has knowledge of all things.
64:12 Obey Allah and obey the Apostle But if you turn away, it is only incumbent on Our Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) to deliver the message clearly.
64:13 Allah! There is no god but He, so let the faithful put their trust in Him.
64:14 O' Believers, there are enemies to you among your wives and your children, so beware of them. But if you pardon, overlook and forgive, Allah is All Forgiving and Most Merciful.
64:15 Your wealth and children are only a test, but with Allah there is a great reward.
64:16 So fear Allah as much as you are able and listen and obey and spend (in the way of Allah); it is better for you. And whoever is protected from the stinginess of his inner Self (Nafs) it is those who will be the successful.
64:17 If you lend to Allah a goodly loan, He will return you back manifold, and will forgive you your sins. Allah is Appreciative and Forbearing to those who are grateful.
64:18 (He) Knows all of the unseen and seen and He is Almighty, the All Wise.
Divorce
At-Talaq | Sura # 65 | 12 verses | Madinan
In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful
65:1 O' Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم)! (Instruct the believers), When you (intend to) divorce women, then divorce them in consideration of their waiting period, and count it accurately. And fear Allah, your Lord. Do not force them out of their homes, nor should they leave, unless they commit a blatant misconduct. These are the limits set by Allah. And whoever transgresses Allah’s limits has truly wronged his own self. You never know, perhaps Allah will bring about a change (of heart) later.
Islam provides an amicable way out of Marriage in case of difficulties arising out of various issues. Both men and women are free to seek divorce.
The issue of Talaq has been discussed in detail in the Tafseer of verses 224-242 of Surah al-Baqara.
65:2 Then, when they have fulfilled their appointed term (waiting period ends), either take them back in a good manner or part with them in a good manner. Take for witness two honest persons among you (Muslims), and establish the witness for Allah. This advice is given to all who believe in Allah and the Last Day. And whoever fears Allah, He makes a way out for him (from difficulty),
65:3 and provides for him from the sources he could never imagine. And whoever puts his trust in Allah, then He is sufficient for him. Surely, Allah brings about what He pleases. Allah has already set a destiny for everything.
65:4 If you have any doubt concerning those of your wives who have ceased menstruating, then you should know that their waiting period will be three months, and the same will apply to those who have no menstruation. As for those who are pregnant, their waiting period will end with delivery. Allah will ease the hardship of those who fear Him.
65:5 This is the Command of Allah which He has sent down to you. Those who fear Allah, He will remit their sins from them and will enlarge rewards for them.
65:6 Allow the wives you are divorcing to reside where you reside, according to your means. Do not harass them in order to make things difficult for them. If they are pregnant, maintain them until they give birth. And if they nurse your infant, compensate them fairly. Maintain your relationship in a friendly and honorable way. But if you disagree, then let another woman nurse him.
65:7 Let the rich man give according to his means, and the poor man give according to what Allah has given him. Allah does not charge a man with more than He has given him; soon Allah may bring ease after hardship.
65:8 Many a town defied the command of the Lord and His Apostles (earlier), so We held them strictly accountable, and We punished them with a horrifying punishment.
65:9 So they tasted the evil result of their misdeeds and the consequence of their wrongdoings was loss (destruction in this life and punishment in the Hereafter).
65:10 Allah has prepared for them a severe punishment. Therefore, fear Allah! O men of understanding and faith. Allah has indeed sent down to you an admonition;
65:11 (and sent) an Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) reciting to you Allah’s revelations, making things clear so that He may bring those who believe, and do good deeds, out of darkness into light. And whoever believes in Allah and does good will be admitted by Him into Gardens under which rivers flow, to stay there for ever eternally. Indeed Allah has granted an excellent provision for them.
65:12 It is Allah Who has created 7 heavens and of the earth like them. His Command descends between them (heavens and earth), so that you may know that Allah has power over all things and that Allah indeed surrounds all things within His knowledge.

The Prohibition
At-Tahrim | Sura # 66 | 12 verses | Madinan
In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful
66:1 O' Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم)! Why do you leave certain thing in consideration of the wish of (some of) your wives while Allah has made it lawful to you. Allah is All Forgiving, and Most Merciful.
In this Surah Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) has cautioned and warned about certain issues related to Ummaha-tul-Momineen (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہم اجمعين). There may have been some domestic issues of concern related to Prophet's (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) household which have been referred to in this Surah. Thus, it is not important for us to go into details because Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) Himself has not disclosed about these issues.
It is important to note that Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) and His Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) teach us by various means that cover every aspect of our lives, private and public, both.
Everything in Quran and Sunnah is meant for the teaching of people. Some people wrongly claim and try to relate human weaknesses in the lives of the Prophets and their close associates. This is not correct understanding. They should know that all these things are meant to teach the people and have no relevance with the weaknesses of the virtuous people of the proximity with Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) and His Apostles. Particularly, these are meant for Muslims to understand these issues correctly and implement these teachings in their lives for their benefit in this life and in Hereafter.
There are two Ahadith that have appeared in Bukhari and other Ahadith books in this context and people relate them with the above verse. Therefore, it is important that these are mentioned here for full understanding of readers.
(i) It is in Sahih Bukhari, Vol 8, Book 83, Hadith # 68
Ummul Momineen Aisha (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) narrated that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) used to stay (for some time) in the house of Ummul Momineen Zainab bint Jahsh (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) and he used to drink honey in her house. Ummul Momineen Hafsa (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) and I decided that when the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) entered the house of either of us, she would say, ‘I smell in you the bad smell of Maghafir (raisin). Have you eaten Maghafir?’ When he came to one of us, she said that to him. He replied (to her), ‘no, but I have drunk honey in the house of Ummul Momineen Zainab bint Jahsh (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا), and (if it smells bad) I will never drink it again.’ Then the following verse was revealed - يَا أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ لِمَ تُحَرِّمُ مَا أَحَلَّ اللَّهُ لَكَ ۖ تَبْتَغِي مَرْضَاتَ أَزْوَاجِكَ ۚ وَاللَّهُ غَفُورٌ رَحِيمٌ - قَدْ فَرَضَ اللَّهُ لَكُمْ تَحِلَّةَ أَيْمَانِكُمْ ۚ وَاللَّهُ مَوْلَاكُمْ ۖ وَهُوَ الْعَلِيمُ الْحَكِيمُ - وَإِذْ أَسَرَّ النَّبِيُّ إِلَىٰ بَعْضِ أَزْوَاجِهِ حَدِيثًا فَلَمَّا نَبَّأَتْ بِهِ وَأَظْهَرَهُ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ عَرَّفَ بَعْضَهُ وَأَعْرَضَ عَنْ بَعْضٍ ۖ فَلَمَّا نَبَّأَهَا بِهِ قَالَتْ مَنْ أَنْبَأَكَ هَٰذَا ۖ قَالَ نَبَّأَنِيَ الْعَلِيمُ الْخَبِيرُ- إِنْ تَتُوبَا إِلَى اللَّهِ فَقَدْ صَغَتْ قُلُوبُكُمَا ۖ [ O' Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم)! Why do you leave certain thing in consideration of the wish of (some of) your wives while Allah has made it lawful to you? Allah has already given you absolution from such oaths. Allah is your Lord, and He is Knowledgeable and Wise. And (remember) when the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) confided a matter to one of his wives, she disclosed it (to another wife). And Allah made it known to him; he informed part of it (to one of his wife) and left a part. Then when he told her (the other wife) of it, she said: 'Who told you this?' He said: 'The All Knowing, All Aware (Allah) has told me.' If you both (wives) turn in repentance to Allah (it will be better) as your hearts have indeed so inclined (to oppose what the prophet ﷺ likes).] (At-Tahrim: 1-4)
The above Hadith is self-explanatory.
(ii) It is in Sahih Bukhari, Vol 3, Bk 46, Hadith # 29
Abdullah bin Abbas (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) narrated that he had been eager to ask Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) about the two Ummahatul Momineen from among the Ummahatul Momineen of the Prophet’s (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) household regarding whom Allah said – إِنْ تَتُوبَا إِلَى اللَّهِ فَقَدْ صَغَتْ قُلُوبُكُمَا [If you both turn in repentance to Allah (it will be better) as your hearts have indeed so inclined (to oppose what the prophet ﷺ likes)] (At-Tahrim - 4), till he performed Hajj along with Umar On our way back, Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) went aside (to answer the call of nature) and I also went aside along with him carrying a tumbler of water. When he had answered the call of nature and returned. I poured water on his hands from the tumbler, and he performed ablution. I said, ‘O Chief of the believers, ‘who were the two Ummahatul Momineen from among the Ummahatul Momineen of the Prophet’s (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) household regarding whom Allah said – إِنْ تَتُوبَا إِلَى اللَّهِ فَقَدْ صَغَتْ قُلُوبُكُمَا [If you both turn in repentance to Allah (it will be better) as your hearts have indeed so inclined (to oppose what the prophet ﷺ likes)] (An-Tahrim - 4), He said, ‘I am astonished at your question, O Ibn Abbas They were Ummul Momineen Aisha and Hafsa Then Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) went on and said, ‘I and an Ansari neighbor of mine from Bani Umaiya bin Zaid who used to live in Awali Al-Madina, used to visit the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) in turns. He used to go one day, and I another day. When I went, I would bring him the news of what had happened that day regarding the instructions and orders and when he went, he used to do the same for me. We, the people of Quraish, used to have authority over women, but when we came to live with the Ansar, we noticed that the Ansari women had the upper hand over their men, so our women started getting influenced from the Ansari women. Once I shouted at my wife and she paid me back in my coin and I disliked that she should answer me back. She said, 'why do you take it ill that I retort upon you? By Allah, the wives of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) retort upon him, and some of them may not speak with him for the whole day till night.' What she said scared me and I said to her, 'whoever among them does so, will be a great loser.' Then I dressed myself and went to Ummul Momineen Hafsa (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) and asked her, 'does any of you keep Allah's Messenger (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) angry all day long till night?' She replied in the affirmative. I said, 'she is a ruined losing person (and will never have success)! Doesn't she fear that Allah may get angry for the anger of Allah's Messenger (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) and thus she will be ruined? Do not ask Allah's Messenger (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) too many things, and do not retort upon him in any case, and do not desert him. Demand from me whatever you like, and do not be tempted to imitate your neighbor (others) in their behavior towards the Prophet ﷺ), for she (Ummul Momineen Aisha رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) is more beautiful than you, and more beloved to Allah's Messenger (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم). In those days it was rumored that Ghassan, (a tribe living in Sham) was getting prepared their horses to invade us. My companion went (to the Prophet ﷺ) on the day of his turn, went, and returned to us at night and knocked at my door violently, asking whether I was sleeping. I was scared (by the hard knocking) and came out to him. He said that a great thing had happened. I asked him, what is it? Have Ghassan come? He replied that it was worse and more serious than that and added that Allah's Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) had divorced all his wives. I said, Ummul Momineen Hafsa (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) is a ruined loser! I expected that would happen some-day.' So, I dressed myself and offered the Fajr prayer with the Prophet Then the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) entered an upper room and stayed there alone. I went to Ummul Momineen Hafsa (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) and found her weeping. I asked her, 'why are you weeping? Didn't I warn you? Have Allah's Messenger (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) divorced you all?' She replied, 'I don't know. He is there in the upper room.' I then went out and came to the pulpit and found a group of people around it and some of them were weeping. Then I sat with them for some time but could not endure the situation. So, I went to the upper room where the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) was and requested to a black slave of his, ‘will you get the permission of (Allah's Apostle ﷺ) for Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) (to enter)? The slave went in, talked to the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) about it and came out saying, 'I mentioned you to him, but he did not reply.' So, I went and sat with the people who were sitting by the pulpit, but I could not bear the situation, so I went to the slave again and said, ‘will you get he permission for Umar He went in and brought the same reply as before. When I was leaving, behold, the slave called me saying, ‘Allah's Messenger (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) has granted you permission.’ So, I entered and saw the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) lying on a mat without bedding on it, and the mat had left its mark on the body of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), and he was leaning on a leather pillow stuffed with palm fibers. I greeted him and while still standing, I said, ‘have you divorced your wives?' He raised his eyes to me and replied in the negative. And then while still standing, I said would you like to listen to what I say, 'O Allah's Messenger We, the people of Quraish used to have the upper hand over our women (wives), and when we came to the people whose women had the upper hand over them’. Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) told the whole story (about his wife). ‘On that the Prophet Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) further said, ‘I then said, 'I went to (Ummul Momineen) Hafsa (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) and said to her, do not be tempted to imitate your companion (Ummul Momineen Aisha - رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) for she is more beautiful than you and more beloved to the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم).' The Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) smiled again. When I saw him smiling, I sat down and cast a glance at the room, and by Allah, I could not see anything of importance but three hides. I said (to Allah's Messenger ﷺ) ‘kindly supplicate Allah to make your followers prosperous for the Persians and the Byzantines have been made prosperous and given worldly luxuries, though they do not worship Allah?' The Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) was leaning then (and on hearing my speech he sat straight) and said, 'O Ibn Al-Khattab (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ), do you have any doubt (that the Hereafter is better than this world)? These people have been given rewards of their good deeds in this world only.' I asked the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), kindly ask Allah's forgiveness for me. The Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) did not go to his wives because of the secret which Ummul Momineen Hafsa (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) had disclosed to Ummul Momineen Aisha (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا), and he said that he would not go to his wives for one month as he was angry with them when Allah admonished him (for his oath that he would not approach Ummul Momineen Maria - رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا). When twenty-nine days had passed, the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) went to Ummul Momineen Aisha (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) first. She said to him, 'you took an oath that you would not come to us for one month, and today only twenty-nine days have passed, as I have been counting them day by day.' The Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said, 'the month is also of twenty-nine days.' That month consisted of twenty-nine days. Ummul Momineen Aisha (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) said, 'when the Divine revelation of choice was revealed, the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) started with me, saying to me, 'I am telling you something, but you need not hurry to give the reply till you can consult your parents.’ Ummul Momineen Aisha (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) knew that her parents would not advise her to part with the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم). The Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said that Allah had said - يَا أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ قُلْ لِأَزْوَاجِكَ إِنْ كُنْتُنَّ تُرِدْنَ الْحَيَاةَ الدُّنْيَا وَزِينَتَهَا فَتَعَالَيْنَ أُمَتِّعْكُنَّ وَأُسَرِّحْكُنَّ سَرَاحًا جَمِيلًا - وَإِنْ كُنْتُنَّ تُرِدْنَ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ وَالدَّارَ الْآخِرَةَ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ أَعَدَّ لِلْمُحْسِنَاتِ مِنْكُنَّ أَجْرًا عَظِيمًا [O' Noble Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), say to your wives: 'If you desire the life of this world and its glitter, then come, I shall give you of these and let you go in an honorable way.' 'But if you desire Allah and His Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) and the (everlasting) Home of the Hereafter, then Surely Allah has prepared a great reward for those of you who do good.'] (Al-Ahzab: 28-29). Ummul Momineen Aisha (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) said, 'Am I to consult my parents about this? Indeed, I prefer Allah, His Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), and the Home of the Hereafter.' After that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) gave the choice to his other wives and they also gave the same reply as did Ummul Momineen Aisha (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا).
Explanation of the above Hadith
In Islam slave women were allowed to live like wives of their masters. There were different rules of marriage with them. Meaning, they need not be formally married like free women and their dower was also less than free women.
Ummul Momineen Maria al-Qibtiyya (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) was a slave girl of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) who was blessed with a son of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), named Ibrahim (عليه السلام) who died in his infancy.
When she started living in the Prophet’s (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) household, the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) had usual conjugal relations with her, but it is reported that it was kept secret for some time from other wives of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) for obvious reasons. However, Ummul Momineen Hafsa (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) came to know about the relationship. The Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) advised her to keep it to herself. However, she informed Ummul Momineen Aisha (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) about it. When Ummul Momineen Aisha (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) inquired about it from the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), he did not like it. However, to keep them happy, he took an oath in front of them that he will not go to Ummul Momineen Maria
But the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) was cautioned about it by Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ).
Why do you leave certain thing in consideration of the wish of (some of) your wives while Allah has made it lawful to you? Allah is All Forgiving, and Most Merciful. Allah has already given you absolution from such oaths. Allah is your Lord, and He is Knowledgeable and Wise.] (At-Tahreem: 1-2).
In view of this caution, the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) decided not to go to all his wives for one month. The above Hadith # 29, probably refers to this episode in the following sentence:
مِنْ شِدَّةِ مَوْجَدَتِهِ عَلَيْهِنَّ حِينَ عَاتَبَهُ اللَّهُ) The Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) did not go to his wives because of the secret which Ummul Momineen Hafsa (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) had disclosed to Ummul Momineen Aisha (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا), and he said that he would not go to his wives for one month as he was angry with them when Allah cautioned him (for his oath that he would not approach Ummul Momineen Maria - رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا).’
66:2 Allah has already given you absolution from such oaths. Allah is your Lord and He is Knowledgeable and Wise.
66:3 And (remember) when the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) confided a matter to one of his wives, she disclosed it (to another wife). And Allah made it known to him; he informed part of it (to one of his wife) and left a part. Then when he told her (the other wife) of it, she said : 'Who told you this?' He said : 'The All Knowing, All Aware (Allah) has told me.'
66:4 If you both (wives) turn in repentance to Allah (it will be better) as your hearts have indeed so inclined (to oppose what the prophet ﷺ likes); but if you help one another against him (the Prophet ﷺ), then surely (know that) Allah is his Protector, Jibreel (عليه السلام), and the righteous believers, and furthermore, the angels too are his helpers.
66:5 Perhaps, if he were to divorce you (all), his Lord would replace you with better wives who are submissive (to Allah), (and) faithful (to Him), devout, repentant, dedicated to worship and fasting, previously married or virgins.
66:6 O' you who believe, save yourselves and your families from the Fire whose fuel is men and rocks, over which are appointed angels stern and severe as wardens who never disobey what Allah commands them, and do what they are commanded;
66:7 (And say) 'O you unbelievers, make no excuses today. You will be requited only for what you had done."
66:8 O' believers! Turn to Allah in sincere repentance. It may well be that your Lord will remove from you your sins and admit you to gardens beneath which rivers flow. On that Day Allah will not disappoint the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) and the believers with him. Their light will shine in front of them and on their right, and they will say : 'Our Lord! Perfect our light for us and grant us forgiveness, for You have power over all things.'
66:9 O' Noble Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), strive against the unbelievers and the hypocrites and be stern with them. Hell will be their dwelling. What a miserable destination.
66:10 Allah has set an example to the unbelievers in the wife of Nooh (عليه السلام) and the wife of Loot (عليه السلام). They were married to two of Our righteous servants (Prophets), but they betrayed them. In no way could their husbands protect them from Allah. Both of them were told, 'Enter the fire, along with those who enter.'
