The Winnowing Winds

Adh-Dhaariyat | Sura # 51 | 60 verses | Makkan

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful

51:31 (Ibrahim - عليه السلام) said, 'So what is your mission, O Messengers.'

51:32 They (two angels) said, 'We have been sent to a wicked people,'

51:33 to send down upon them (the punishment of) stones of baked clay,

51:34 marked by your Lord for the transgressors.'

There was rain of stones on the people of Loot (عليه السلام) for their evil deed (sodomy) and every stone was marked at whom it will fall to kill him on the spot.

51:35 So We evacuated everyone who was a believer there,

51:36 but found only one household of people (the house of Prophet Loot  عليه السلام) who submitted to Allah,

51:37 and left the town to be a sign for those who fear the painful punishment (of Allah).

51:38 And in (the story of) Musa (عليه السلام) (was another lesson), when We sent him to Pharaoh with compelling proof,

51:39 But (Pharaoh) turned away in the pride of power and might, and said, '(this Apostle is) a sorcerer or a fanatic.'

51:40 Therefore, We grabbed him and his armies and dumped them into the sea; he was damned.

51:41 And in (the story of) A'ad (was a sign), when We sent against them the devastating wind.

51:42 It spared nothing, it came upon,  that it did not reduce to ashes.

51:43 In (the punishment of) the people of Thamud, (there are signs)! They were told, 'Enjoy yourself for a while.'

51:44 But they disobeyed the command of their Lord with arrogance; so the awful shreik overtook them while they were looking.'

51:45 So neither they could stand up on their feet nor could they defend themselves.

51:46 And We destroyed the people of Nooh (عليه السلام) before them,  because they too were transgressors.

51:47 With Our power, We brought into being the Universe. And indeed, We expand it (steadily).

51:48 As for the earth, We spread it out. How superbly did We spread it out!

51:49 And (know that) all things We have created in pairs, so that you may reflect and be mindful.

51:50 (O Prophet  ﷺ), say to mankind,  'Rush towards Allah, indeed, I am assigned by Him as a manifest Warner to you all.

51:51 And tell them (O' people) do not set up another god with Allah.  I am truly sent by Him with a clear warning to you.'

51:52 Similarly, no Apostle came to the people who lived before them (Makkan polytheists) but they said of him (in like manner); 'A sorcerer or a mad man.'

51:53 Is this the legacy they have passed down from (generation) one to the other? In fact, they are a rebellious people.

51:54 So, turn away (O' Prophet ﷺ) from them (Makkan polytheists), you are no more responsible (as you have conveyed the message to them clearly).

51:55 And keep on reminding (the people who believe), it is good for those who believe to be reminded (about good deeds).

51:56 I have not created the jinns and human beings except to worship Me.

51:57 (And) I do not want from them any provision, nor do I want them to feed Me.

51:58 Indeed, the provider of sustenance (for all beings) is Allah, the One with absolute Power and  Might.

51:59 The wrongdoers (Makkan polytheists) will certainly have a share (of the torment) like that of their predecessors. So do not let them ask Me to hasten (it).

51:60 Woe then to the disbelievers, on that Day with which they are being warned.

The Mount

At-Tur | Sura # 52 | 49 verses | Makkan

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful

52:1 By Mount Tur.

Whenever Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) says 'By something', it means to emphasize the importance of that matter.

52:2 By the book (the Quran) inscribed,

52:3 on open pages (for all to read).

52:4 And by Bait-ul-Mamoor (the house over the heavens parallel to the Ka’ba at Makkah, visited by the angels),

52:5 And by the elevated canopy (sky).

52:6 And by the surging ocean.

52:7 Surely, the punishment of your Lord will occur.

52:8 No one can avert it.

52:9 On that Day, skies will shake in fear,

52:10 and the mountains will be blown away completely.

52:11 There is misery that day for (all) those who denied (the revelations),

52:12 who are engaged in falsehood and play.

52:13 The day they will be dragged and pushed into Hell.

52:14 (They will be told)  'This is the Fire which you used to deny.'

52:15 Is this magic, or do you not see?

52:16 Now burn therein; it will be the same for you, whether you bear it patiently or do not bear it patiently. This is the retribution commensurate with your deeds.

52:17 Surely, the righteous will be in gardens and bliss,

52:18 rejoicing in what their Lord has given them; and their Lord will protect them from the torment of Hell.

52:19 (It will be said) 'Eat and drink to your hearts contentment, this is the reward for your good deeds.'

52:20 They shall recline on couches arranged in rows; and We shall wed them with beautiful Huris.

52:21 Those who believed and whose offspring followed them in faith, We will unite them with their offspring without depriving anybody of their reward for their deeds.  Each one according to what he has earned.

52:22 And We shall provide them with fruit and meat as they desire.

52:23 The Cup of wine will be passed between them from hand to hand that will not cause no idle talk or sinful urge.

52:24 And there will go round them boy servants attending them, (so pure) as hidden pearls.

52:25 They will converse with one another (about their worldly life),

52:26 and they will say,  'Surely, we were previously afraid with our families (from the punishment of Allah).

52:27 But Allah has been Gracious to us, and has saved us from the punishment of the Fire.

52:28 'Indeed, (in our previous life), we used to invoke (and pray to) Allah (exclusively). He is surely Kind and Most Merciful!'

52:29 Therefore, remind and preach (to people).   By the Grace of Allah, you (O' Apostle ﷺ) are not a fortune teller, or a madman.

52:30 Do they say : 'He is but a poet; (and) we are waiting for some misfortune to befall him.'

52:31 Tell them, 'Wait if you will; I too shall wait with you.'

52:32 Does their reasoning prompt them to this, or they are a rebellious people?

52:33 Or do they say, 'He has simply made it up (this Quran)?' Rather, they do not want to believe.

52:34 Then let them produce a Scripture like it (the Quran) if they are truthful.

52:35 Or were they created by no one? Or were they (themselves) are creators?

52:36 Did they create the heavens and the earth? No!  They will never be convinced.

52:37 Do they possess the treasures of your Lord? Or are they the treasurers (of Allah's Mercy)?

52:38 Do they have a ladder, (or a device to reach heavens), with which they spy and listen (to matters beyond human perception)? If so, let those who spy present a definite proof.

52:39 Or has He only daughters and you (O' disbelievers) have sons?

52:40 Or do you (O' Prophet ﷺ) demand any compensation from them (for your preaching) so that they are burdened with expense?

52:41 Or, do they have (an access to) the unseen, and are they writing it down?

52:42 Or are they plotting against you? (Surely) the plot will fall back on them (unbelievers).

52:43 Or do they have a god other than Allah? Glorified is Allah far above what they associate (with Him)!

52:44 If they should see a segment falling from the sky (as punishment), they would say, 'It is only a massive cloud.'

52:45 So leave them alone till they meet their Day (of Reckoning), in which they will collapse and faint (with horror).

52:46 Their deception will not avail them in the least on that day, nor will they be helped.

52:47 Surely, for those who do wrong, there is punishment (in this world as well as in their graves after death) before this (the punishment of eternal Hell), but most of them don’t know.

52:48 So (O' Apostle ﷺ) wait patiently for your Lord´s decree.  For, of course you are always under Our watchful eye!  And recite the praises of your Lord when you wake up (in the morning).

52:49 And glorify Him at night, and at the time when the stars retreat.

The Star

An-Najm | Sura # 53 | 62 verses | Makkan

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful

53:1 By the star when it sets,

Whenever Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) says 'By something', it means to emphasize the importance of that matter.

53:2 Your companion (Apostle Muhammad ﷺ) neither erred intentionally nor unintentionally,

53:3 And he does not speak of (his own) desire.

53:4 It is the  revelation revealed (to him).

53:5 The Mighty in power (Allah) has taught him (Prophet Mohammad – صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) the knowledge.

53:6 So (equipped), he stood well poised.

53:7 (With the perfect vision attained) at the highest horizon.

53:8  Then he (the Prophet ﷺ) approached closer and hung (by Allah).

53:9 Then (both) closed up like two bows, and indeed more closely.

53:10 And He revealed to His servant (Prophet Mohammad  ﷺ) what He wanted to reveal.

53:11 The heart of Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم)  did not distrust what he saw.

53:12 Will you people wrangle over what he beheld (saw).

53:13    For indeed he beheld Him (Allah) yet again.

53:14   Near the 'Lote' tree lying farthest beyond which no one can go.

53:15    Lying close to the Heaven of Rest.

53:16 When the 'Lote' tree was being enveloped by what it was to be enveloped with,  (a mystery not disclosed).

53:17 His (Prophet Mohammad's  ﷺ) sight did not blink or did it miss anything.

53:18 Indeed he (the Prophet ﷺ) saw clearly the greatest of the signs of his Lord

The above verses 1-18 are related to the night of ascension (M'eraj) of Prophet Mohammad

There are differences of opinions among scholars whether Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) saw Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) during Me'raj.

Verse # 12 above - مَا كَذَبَ ٱلۡفُؤَادُ مَا رَأَىٰٓ [ Will you people wrangle over what he beheld (saw)], indicates that there were some differences of opinion even among Sahabah as to what was witnessed by Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) on the night of ascension? Some thought it was Jibril (عليه السلام).

However, the statement of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) in verse 10 above - فَأَوۡحَىٰٓ إِلَىٰ عَبۡدِهِۦ مَآ أَوۡحَىٰ [ He revealed to His Servant], clearly shows that the conversation is between Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) and Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم); meaning Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) appeared to Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) in order to grant him revelation. The text does not say that Jibril (عليه السلام) appeared to Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم). If we take Jibril (عليه السلام), in place of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) in the above verse, it will mean that Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) is the Servant of Jibril (عليه السلام) (Nauzubillahi), which is not correct.

It is in Hadith - Ibn Abbas (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) reported that Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) saw Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) on the 'Night of Ascension ( Sahih Muslim)

We have discuss briefly the differences of opinions of Sahaba and Imams in this regard.

It is in Hadith - Narrated by Masruq (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) - I said to Ummul Momineen Aisha (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا), "O' Mother! Did Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) see his Lord?" Aisha (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) said, "What you have said makes my hair stand on end! Know that if somebody tells you one of the following, he is a liar.

Whoever tells you that Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) saw his Lord, is a liar. Then Ummul Momineen Aisha (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) recited this verse - لَّا تُدۡرِڪُهُ ٱلۡأَبۡصَـٰرُ وَهُوَ يُدۡرِكُ ٱلۡأَبۡصَـٰرَ‌ۖ [ Peoples' eyes (be it physical eyes or heart eyes) cannot see Him. He sees their eyes (them).] (Al-An'aam - 103). [It is not fitting for a human being that Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) should speak to him except by inspiration, or from behind a veil.] (Ash-Shura - 51). (Part of the Hadith) (Bukhari, Muslim)

Read carefully the above Hadith. Ummul Momineen Aisha (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) is not narrating a Hadith, rather she is clarifying the meanings of the verses of Quran and the reasons for her observations on a narration (Hadith). What Ummul Momineen Aisha (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) is referring is Allah's (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) Absolute Existence which cannot be seen by anyone and therefore she is quoting the verses of Quran that negate sighting of Allah's (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) absolute existence. Nothing can encompass Zaat-e-Elahi.

Look at the following Ahadith that confirm sighting of Allah's manifestations in (i) Tajalli-e-Zaati (Light of His Knowledge), and (ii) Tajalli-e- Sifaati (His attributes Refulgence)

It is in Hadith - Ibn Abbas (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) narrated that Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said - I saw my Lord, the Exalted and Glorious in the most beautiful form. Akrama (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said, on this I submitted, does not Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) say that “Peoples’ eyes cannot perceive Him. He perceives their eyes.”, then Ibn Abbas (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said, Hey ’ this is true when Allah’s (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) refulgence (Tajalli) is from the divine light which is the 'Light of His Unity' (Tajalli-e-Zaati). Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) has seen his Sustainer (Rab) twice”. (Tirmidhi).

It is in Hadith It is narrated on the authority of Abu Dharr (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) - I asked the Apostle of Allah ( صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) - Did you see your Lord? He (the Prophet - صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said "He is light نُور, I saw Him.] (Muslim, Book # 1, Hadith # 341).

What is light of Unity? It is His knowledge. It is important to note that Allah's light ( نُور ) is within his Zaat. It is not that Zaat-e-Elahi is within His light ( نُور ). We cannot confine Zaat-e-Elahi into His own light, ( نُور ) or into a form, shape, or body; exclusively, divine or creature like. If you do that, it will be shirk.

It is in Quran - ٱللَّهُ نُورُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٲتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ‌ۚ [Allah is the light (existence) of the Heavens and Earth’.] (An-Noor -35).

It is in Quran – Indeed he (Prophet Mohammad ﷺ) saw clearly the greatest of the Signs (manifestations) of his Lord (during Me'araj)’. (An-Najm – 18).

Bayhaqi narrated a Hadith with a sound chain - Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said 'I saw my Lord ( in al-Asma' wa al-Sifat) in the form of a curly-haired, beardless young man wearing a green robe'.

Thus, Sahaba and Imams rightly said that Zaat-e-Elahi (the absolute existence of Allah) cannot be encompassed by human beings from the physical or spiritual eyes. However Sighting of Allah's (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) Tajalli-e-Zaati is ( نُور ) formless light. And sighting of Allah's (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) Tajalli-e-Asma wo Sifaat can be witnessed in the shape of His creatures. Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) witnessed Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) in both; Tajalli-e-Zaati ( نُور ), and Tajalli-e-Asma was Sifaat - in the shape of His creatures.

53:19 Have you, (O' Idolaters), considered (the reality of) 'Laat' and 'Uzza (the false goddesses of Makkan pagans)?

53:20 And the third, the 'Manaat' (the other false goddess)?

53:21 Are you (O' Makkan pagans) to have sons, and He (Allah)  the daughters?

53:22 This is, of course, an unfair allocation!

53:23 These (idols) are mere names that you and your forefathers have made up, a practice Allah has never authorized. They follow nothing but (inherited) assumptions and self desires, although (true) guidance has already come to them from their Lord.

53:24 Or should every person (simply) have whatever (intercessors / personal idols) he desires?

53:25 Nay! To Allah belongs the Hereafter and this present life.

53:26 How many are the angels in the heavens; yet their intercession can avail none unless Allah gives them permission in favor of whom He wants and is pleased with.

The above verse describes that on the day of Resurrection, the intercession will be done not only by prophets, Awliya Allah, but also by angels.

53:27 Those who do not believe in the Hereafter give the angels names of females,

53:28 although they have no knowledge (in support) of this. They follow nothing but (inherited) assumptions. And surely assumptions can in no way replace the truth.

53:29 So ( O' Prophet ﷺ) ignore the ones who turn away from Our reminder (the Quran), and desire only the life of this world.

53:30 This is the farthest limit of their knowledge. Surely your Lord alone knows best who has strayed away from the path and who has come to guidance.

53:31 To Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth.  He will punish those who do evil in accordance with their deeds, and He will bestow rewards on those who are righteous.

53:32 (For) those who avoid major sins and indecencies, the small faults are excepted; surely, for them your Lord will have abundant forgiveness. He knows you well ever since He created you from the earth and ever since you were embryos in your mothers' wombs. So do not attest to your own virtues; He knows best those who are mindful of Him.

The above verse indicates that self proclamation of virtue is not a desirable thing. A man should always seek Allah's (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) forgiveness for his sins known to him and those that are not known to him.

53:33 Have you seen the one who turned away (from Islam)

This verse is reported to be related to one Waleed bin Mugheerah, who wanted to accept Islam but someone promised him to take the punishment on his behalf for certain amount of money. Thus he gave him part of the promised money and turned away from Islam.

53:34 He gave a little from the promised amount then stopped.

53:35 Does he have the knowledge of the unseen so that he sees (the Hereafter)?

53:36 Does he not have any knowledge of what is (revealed) in the book of Musa (عليه السلام),

53:37 and (that of) Ibrahim (عليه السلام), who  fulfilled (his covenant),

53:38 that none shall bear the burden of another;

53:39 that a human can have nothing except what he strives for,

53:40 and that (the outcome of) their endeavors will be seen (in their record),

53:41 then they will be fully rewarded,

53:42 and that to your Lord (alone) is the ultimate return (of all things).

53:43 And that it is He Who grants laughter and tears,

53:44 and He who ordains death and life;

53:45 and that it is He who created the spouses, male and the female,

53:46 from a drop of semen when it is emitted.

53:47 (Therefore, they should understand that) It is upon Him to bring about re-creation (on the day of Resurrection).

53:48 And it is He, Who grants (provisions to people) in abundance, or just sufficient.

53:49 And it is He the Lord of (the star) Sirius ( whom the Makkan Pagans used to worship.)

53:50 He destroyed the (people of) A'ad of the former (era).

53:51 Then the people of Thamud, sparing no one.

53:52 And before (that He destroyed) the people of Nooh (عليه السلام), who were truly far worse in wrongdoing and transgression.

53:53 And He destroyed the overthrown cities (of Sodom and Gomorrah during the time of Prophet Loot -

53:54 who were covered by (the punishment with stones) that covered them.

53:55 Then which of the bounties of your Lord will you dispute?

53:56 This (Prophet ﷺ) is a Warner, like earlier Prophets.

53:57 The approaching (Hour) has drawn near.

53:58 None but Allah can disclose it.

53:59 (O' Disbelievers) Do you find this revelation astonishing,

53:60 and (you are) laughing instead of weeping,

53:61 and persisting in heedlessness?

53:62 Prostrate yourselves before Allah and worship Him while you can!

The above is the 'verse of Sajda' (آیت سجدہ). If someone is reading it alone, should do prostration (سجدة) alone. If it is read loudly in an audience, the reciter and all the listeners should do 'Prostration of Recitation' (Sajda-e-Tilaawah - سجدة التلاوة) individually.

The Prostration can be done in sitting or standing position. In the Hanafi school of thought, 'Prostration of Recitation' (Sajda-e-Tilaawah - سجدة التلاوة) is obligatory (Fardh). With Shafii and Maliki, it is Sunnah.

It is in Hadith - 'When you have recited a verse requiring Sajdah-e-Tilaawaah, you should go down for Sajdah with Allahu-Akbar and rise from Sajdah with Allahu-Akbar, which may be performed sitting, though it is preferable to prostrate oneself from the standing position. (Abu Dawood)

Have the intention to do Prostration of recitation (سجدة التلاوة). The place where you are reading/reciting Quran should be clean. Turn towards Qibla, say (quietly) Allahu Akbar, go into prostration once, recite the 'Tasbih of Sajdah' 'Subhana Rabbi al-A'alaa' (سبحان ربّي الاعلى ) at least 3 times and raise from the Sajda saying Allahu Akbar.

The Moon

Al-Qamar | Sura # 54 | 55 verses | Makkan

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful

54:1 The Hour draws near; the moon is split in two.

The miracle of the splitting of the moon occurred in Makka before Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) immigrated to Madina. Many Sahabah, like Ali bin Abi Talib, Anas bin Malik, Huzaifa bin Yaman, Abdullah bin Masud, Abdullah bin Abbas, Abdullah bin Umar, Jubair bin Mutim (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہم اجمعين) have narrated about this event in many Ahadith.

It is reported that Makkan Polytheists like Walid bin Mughira, Abu Jahl, A'as bin Wail, Aas bin Hisham, Aswad bin Yaghus, Aswad bin Muttalib, Zama bin Aswad, Nadr bin Harith, etc., demanded the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) saying that 'If you are a true Prophet of Allah then split the moon in half. Let it be in such a way that one half will appear over Mount Abu Qubais and the other half will be seen over Mount Quayqian.' The Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) asked them, 'if I do that, will you accept Islam'. They said 'Yes, we will.' Then on the following 14th night moon, the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) called all the people of Quraish polytheists and asked them to bear witness to it. He stood at an elevated place for all people to see him, looked at the Moon, raised his finger and gestured towards it, and Moon got split into two, and its two halves were seen on the Mounts as requested by the polytheists. Once everyone had seen it, the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) raised his finger and gestured again. The two halves came together and joined again.

It is in Hadith -It is narrated on the authority of Anas bin Malik (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) who said that 'the people of Makkah asked the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) to produce a miracle, and he showed them the splitting of the moon into two parts, until they saw (the mount of) Hira between them.' (Bukhari, Muslim and others)

It is in Hadith - It is narrated on the authority of Jubair bin Mut'im (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) who said that the moon was split into two during the time of Allah's Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم); a part of the moon was over one mountain and another part over another mountain. So they said, (Prophet) Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) has taken us by his magic.' They then said, `If he was able to take us by magic, he will not be able to do so with all (other) people.' (Musnad Ahmad, Baihaqi in Dalail.)

When this miracle was witnessed by the Quraish, some said that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) has caused a spell on them. Some others were confused as they thought, if the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) had cast a spell on the crowed gathered, then 'let us ask some wayfarers who came to Makka the following day if they had seen two halfs of the moon at night'. They did that and it was confirmed by some wayfarers who happened to see that miracle on their way. After this, the Polytheists started claiming that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) had cast his spell on the sky itself so that whoever in the world looked up, he saw the moon got split into two that night.

The miracles performed by the Prophets are not required to be proven by any means, scientific or otherwise since it is the work of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ). Like the splitting of the water of the Sea and Musa (عليه السلام) and the children of Israel crossing it on their foot cannot be explained scientifically.

54:2 Yet when they see a sign, the unbelievers turn their backs and say, 'This is an ingenious magic.'

54:3 They rejected (the truth), and followed their own whims. All matters will (surely) come to conclusion (at the appropriate time).

54:4 Stories (of the punishment to earlier people) to warn them have already come, that should have restrained them.

54:5 (This Quran is indeed) profound (in) wisdom, but warnings are of no benefit (to the disbelievers).

54:6 So turn away from them (O Prophet  ﷺ), (and wait for) the Day (when) the caller will summon (them) for something horrifying.

54:7 With downcast eyes, they will emerge from their burial places (graves) as if they were swarming locusts,

54:8 scrambling towards the Caller. The unbelievers will cry, 'This is a disastrous Day.'

54:9 Long before them, the people of Nooh (عليه السلام) disbelieved. They rejected Our servant (Prophet Nooh  عليه السلام), called him insane and rebuked him.

54:10 So he called upon his Lord, 'I am overwhelmed, (My Lord, kindly) help me.

54:11 So We opened the floodgates of sky with torrential rain,

54:12 and caused the earth to burst with springs, so the waters met for a fate already set.

54:13 We carried him on that (Ark made) of planks and nails,

54:14 floating under Our care, a reward for him (Nooh  عليه السلام) who was rejected (by the disbelievers)!

54:15 We have left that Ark as a sign, so is there any who would take admonition?

54:16 How dreadful was My punishment and My warning.

54:17 And We have indeed made the Quran easy to understand and remember, and is there anyone who will remember (and benefit from it)?

54:18 The people of A'ad also rejected the truth. How (dreadful) was My punishment and (the fulfillment of) My warnings!

54:19 We unleashed upon them a screaming wind, on a day of continuous catastrophe,

54:20 snatching out the people as if they were uprooted stems of date-palms.

54:21 How dreadful was My punishment and My warning.

54:22 And We have indeed made the Quran easy to understand and remember, and is there anyone who will remember (and benefit from it)?

54:23 The people of Thamud rejected the warnings,

54:24 saying, 'Are we to follow a man who stands alone among us? That would surely be an error and madness.

54:25 'Why should he (Prophet Saleh -  عليه السلام) alone from among all of us be chosen to receive the message? He is nothing but a wicked liar.'

54:26 (It was revealed to Ṣaleḥ  عليه السلام), 'They will  know tomorrow who the boastful liar is.'

54:27 We are sending the she-camel as a test for them. Just watch them and be patient.

54:28 Inform them that the water is to be shared between them (and she-camel). Each (one’s right) to drink is being established (by turns).

54:29 But they roused a companion of theirs, so he dared to kill (her).

54:30 How dreadful was My punishment and My warning.

54:31 Surely, We sent against them a single punishment (awful shriek) and they became like the dry stubble (crushed twigs) of a fence-builder.

54:32  And We have indeed made the Quran easy to understand and remember, and is there anyone who will remember (and benefit from it)?

54:33 The people of Loot (عليه السلام) rejected the warnings.

54:34 We let loose on them a stone-charged tornado which spared none except Loot’s (عليه السلام) household, whom We saved by early dawn,

54:35 as a blessing from Us. Thus do We reward those who are grateful.

54:36 (Loot  عليه السلام) had certainly warned them of our severe punishment but  they doubted the warnings!

54:37 They even sought to snatch away his guests (the two angels who visited him in form of human beings) from him but We blinded their eyes, and said : 'Now taste My punishment and the result of disbelieving My warning.'

54:38 And indeed, by the early morning they were punished by an unrelenting torment.

54:39 (They were told), Taste My punishment and warnings.

54:40 And We have indeed made the Quran easy to understand and remember, and is there anyone who will remember (and benefit from it)?

54:41 And indeed, the warnings came to the people of Pharaoh.

54:42 They disbelieved all Our signs. Consequently, We seized them with a seizure of the Mighty, and Powerful.

54:43 Are your disbelievers (of Makka)  better than these (nations of Nooh, Loot, Saleh (عليهم السلام) and the people of Pharaoh who were destroyed)? Or have you (O' people of Makka)  been granted immunity (against Our punishment) in the divine Scriptures?

54:44 Or do they say, 'We are united (and are great in numbers) and bound to win?'

54:45 (Soon) their united front will be defeated and (forced to) flee.

54:46 Nay, but the Hour (of Judgement) is their appointed time (for retribution), and the Hour will be more grievous and more bitter.

54:47 Indeed the criminals are (lost) in error, and are (engrossed) in a frenzied state (of denying the truth).

54:48 The Day when they will be dragged into the  Fire with their faces downwards, (it will be said to them) : 'You taste the touch of Hell.'

54:49 Indeed, We have created all things in precise measure.

54:50 Our command is but one word, like a twinkling of an eye.

54:51 O disbelievers, We have already destroyed many like you. Will you not take admonition?

54:52 Whatever they do is (recorded) in their book (of deeds).

54:53 Every action, small and big is being noted.

54:54 Surely, the pious will be in the midst of gardens and rivers,

54:55 in a seat of truth (Paradise), near by the Most Powerful King (Allah).

55:8 so that you would not transgress the balance.

55:9 Weigh with justice, and do not give short in measure.

55:12 and grain with husks, and aromatic plants.

55:13 Then you (O' Jinns and humans) which of your Lord’s favors will you  deny?

55:14 He created human beings from sounding clay like the clay of pottery,

55:15 and He created the jinns from smokeless flame of fire.

55:16 Then you (O' Jinns and humans) which of your Lord’s favors will you  deny?

55:17 (He is) the Lord of the 2 Easts (places of sunrise during summer and winter) and the Lord of the 2 Wests (places of sunset during summer and winter).

55:18 Then you (O' Jinns and humans) which of your Lord’s favors will you  deny?

55:19 He has made the two oceans apparently meeting together,

55:20 yet between them is a barrier which they cannot cross.

55:21 Then you (O' Jinns and humans) which of your Lord’s favors will you  deny?

55:22 Out of both (waters) come forth pearls and coral.

55:23 Then you (O' Jinns and humans) which of your Lord’s favors will you  deny?

55:24 To Him only belong the sailing ships, raised above the sea like hills.

55:25 Then you (O' Jinns and humans) which of your Lord’s favors will you  deny?

55:26 All that there is in the Cosmos shall vanish.

55:27 The Countenance (stand alone) of your Lord (by Himself) shall endure, the Lord of Majesty and Glory.

55:28 Then you (O' Jinns and humans) which of your Lord’s favors will you  deny?

55:29 Everyone in the heavens and on earth turn to Him for their needs.  Every day He manifests Himself in yet another way.

55:30 Then you (O' Jinns and humans) which of your Lord’s favors will you  deny?

55:31 We will soon attend to you (for judgment), O' two multitudes (of jinn and humans)!

55:32 Then you (O' Jinns and humans) which of your Lord’s favors will you  deny?

55:33 O' Assembly of jinns and mankind, if you have the power to pass beyond the zones of the heavens and the earth,  then pass them. But you will never be able to pass them, except with authority (from Allah).

55:34 Then you (O' Jinns and humans) which of your Lord’s favors will you  deny?

55:35 The smokeless flames of fire and molten brass will be sent against you both (jinns and mankind), and you will not be able to defend yourselves.

55:36 Then you (O' Jinns and humans) which of your Lord’s favors will you  deny?

55:37 (How horrible will it be) when the skies will split apart, becoming rose-red like (burnt) oil!

55:38 Then you (O' Jinns and humans) which of your Lord’s favors will you  deny?

55:39 On that Day there will be no need for any human or jinn to be asked about their sins.

55:40 Then you (O' Jinns and humans) which of your Lord’s favors will you  deny?

55:41 The sinners will be recognized by their marks (black faces) and they will be seized by their forelocks and their feet.

55:42 Then you (O' Jinns and humans) which of your Lord’s favors will you  deny?

55:43 (It will be said to them) : 'This is Hell which the sinners had denied it.'

55:44 To and fro, they would be rotated between Fire and the (fiercely) hot water.

In the above verse there is mention of Hell, its discomforts and punishment. After describing this, in the next verse, Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) says, فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ "[Then you (O' Jinns and humans), which of your Lord’s favors will you deny?]. Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) is explaining that the comforts given to the deniers in this world, in spite of their denial. And they should be thankful to Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) for these comforts and freedom of action and save themselves from the punishment Hellfire.

55:45 Then you (O' Jinns and humans) which of your Lord’s favors will you  deny?

55:46 But for those who fear their standing before the Lord, there will be two gardens (in Paradise).

55:47 Then you (O' Jinns and humans) which of your Lord’s favors will you  deny?

55:48 (Both the gardens will be) with lush branches.

55:49 Then you (O' Jinns and humans) which of your Lord’s favors will you  deny?

55:50 In each (Garden) will be two flowing springs.

55:51 Then you (O' Jinns and humans) which of your Lord’s favors will you  deny?

55:52 In both of them there will be every kind of fruit in pairs.

55:53 Then you (O' Jinns and humans) which of your Lord’s favors will you  deny?

55:54 (The righteous) would recline on (exotic) carpets lined with lush brocade. (Loaded with plentiful fruit), the branches of fruit trees would hang low, within easy reach.

55:55 Then you (O' Jinns and humans) which of your Lord’s favors will you  deny?

55:56 Therein will be chaste virgins restraining their glances (upon their husbands only) whom no human or jinn has touched before.

55:57 Then you (O' Jinns and humans) which of your Lord’s favors will you  deny?

55:58  (In beauty) they (these virgins) are  like rubies and coral.

55:59 Then you (O' Jinns and humans) which of your Lord’s favors will you  deny?

55:60 Could the reward for goodness be anything other than goodness?

55:61 Then you (O' Jinns and humans) which of your Lord’s favors will you  deny?

55:62 Besides these two,  there shall be two other gardens (in Paradise).

55:63 Then you (O' Jinns and humans) which of your Lord’s favors will you  deny?

55:64 Both (these gardens) will be dark green.

55:65 Then you (O' Jinns and humans) which of your Lord’s favors will you  deny?

55:66 In both of them there will be two springs gushing out water.

55:67 Then you (O' Jinns and humans) which of your Lord’s favors will you  deny?

55:68 In both of them are fruits, date-palms and pomegranates.

55:69 Then you (O' Jinns and humans) which of your Lord’s favors will you  deny?

55:70 There, they shall have beautiful virtuous (wives).

55:71 Then you (O' Jinns and humans) which of your Lord’s favors will you  deny?

55:72 (There are) Fair companions (Houris) restricting (their glances), in (beautiful and decorated) homes.

Like the people who are not educated and work in the fields in remote areas of the land cannot understand complex financial system of a multinational company or workings of a modern day stock exchange, similarly, we cannot understand the complex nature of afterlife or the comforts of Paradise while we live in this world and try to understand things with our limited knowledge and understanding. This world is like a remote village in comparison to the life of the Paradise, therefore,, to explain the life of the Paradise to the people of this world, Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) explains that they will be provided with all kinds of luxuries no eyes have seen and no ears have listened, provided they live as per His commandments. Thus, the presence of houris and servant boys and other comforts of Paradise cannot be understood when we try to understand them from the limited knowledge and parameters of worldly understanding.

The majority of the people are involved in sinful acts because of (i) their desire for food and luxurious living, and (ii) getting involved in sexual activities outside the purview of lawful marriage allowed by the Almighty. The description of Houris is mentioned by Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) saying O'people, do not get involved in sinfulness on account of these because these will be provided to you in the Paradise as a routine, in multitudes, without you asking for them, as reward for your good deeds.

What is reward? The reward is a thing which is given to add to your living conditions. Not only to make your living comfortable, but also to enhance it further. So if a man keeps himself chaste in this world, he will be rewarded with multiple wives in Paradise and with enhanced strength to enjoy the comforts there.

The question is when men will be provided with all comforts as women do, then why not women provided with male houris?

This question is absurd because those who ask this kind of questions are unaware of the nature of female and male human beings. The nature of women is different from men. They both get comforts in different environment in different comfort zones. In all species, males have been created to be more active sexually in order to ensure the continuation of that species in the world. So is the case the humans. You cannot question why the nature of men and women is different? Allah has created His creatures in consideration of their facts and natures. He knows what kind of nature is good for whom. If you feed a tiger with grass, it will die. If you fee a goat with meat, it will die. Similarly, it is not in women's nature to have multiple male partners. They are content with one. If you provide them more, they will be subjected to hardship and agony, in addition to psychological strain. Therefore, Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) will not subject them to hardship in a place of comfort like Paradise?

As per Okami and Shackelford basic arguments (i) Women invest more in parenthood than men which results in their unwillingness in having more than one partner in life. (ii) As a result of the gender difference in investing in parenthood, women are more cautious in selecting their spouses. It is also because it is easier for them to find a ready and willing spouse. (iii) From time immemorial, men have battled and competed for women more than women for men. This is the reason that more or less all communities of human beings have allowed polygamy in the known history of mankind.

Numerous studies have established that the orientations of men and women are real and functional. Gender equality has to be understood in this perspective.

An American study conducted by Clark and Hatfield established the differences in men and women in terms of sexual initiative. The study was conducted by assigning male students the task of asking passers-by, who were female students similar to them on a scale of attractiveness, whether they would come with a male student to his apartment for intimacy. None of the women agreed to the proposition. But when women were assigned the same task and presented the question to male passers-by, three in four men were ready to go to have the intimacy with the woman. Even the rest were regretful and explained their refusal by saying that they were in a committed, monogamous relationship. But, none of the women expressed regret, or justified the rejection of the offer of intimacy.

Another study conducted by Buss and Schmidt presented similar findings. Men showed greater interest than women in a diversity of sexual partners. Compared with women, men expressed a wish for three times the number of lifetime partners.

Professor Osmo Kontula of Finland conducted another research titled 'Between Sexual desire and reality'. He wrote, the differences in degree of sexual desire between men and women derives from the fact that the survey question inquiring about desire was not asked at the time of the month when women feel most desirous. The intensity of women’s sexual desire fluctuates during their menstrual cycle much more than men’s. Men value the mate’s youth and physical appearance, while women value man’s social status, the resources he controls, and his willingness to share with them.

In the United States, statistics show that the men that women have chosen as spouse/partners earn on average 50 percent more than the men who were not chosen. In many countries, a husband who is not financially generous enough toward his wife has constituted grounds for divorce. There is no country in which it is grounds for divorce that a woman does not support her husband economically to a sufficient degree.

In choosing a mate, women exchange their attractiveness to man's resources. Waynforth reported a study in which women, who married men who were older and better educated than them had more children, were more satisfied with their marriages and were less likely to divorce their husbands than other women. As the women were trading in their attractiveness for the men’s resources, the attractiveness of the man himself was less important than the attractiveness of the woman for the man. According to another study, women select less attractive men because of the risk of being abandoned by a more handsome man.

The other question is, will the women be comfortable with their husbands having more wives in the Paradise as, in this world, they do not like it?

In Paradise the human feelings of jealousy, hate, rage and everything will be removed from them. They will be provided with everything they desire which is as per their nature. The women will be provided with comforts they like which are as per their nature, and men will be provided with comforts they like, which are as per their nature. They all will live in harmony within themselves and outside.

55:73 Then you (O' Jinns and humans) which of your Lord’s favors will you  deny?

55:74 Whom neither man nor Jinn has ever touched before.

55:75 Then you (O' Jinns and humans) which of your Lord’s favors will you  deny?

55:76 All (believers) will be reclining on green cushions and splendid carpets.

55:77 Then you (O' Jinns and humans) which of your Lord’s favors will you  deny?

56:16 reclining on them facing each other.

56:17 Immortal youths will go round, serving them,

56:18 with cups, jugs, and glasses of flowing wine,

56:19 that will cause them neither headache nor intoxication.

56:20 And they shall have fruits of their choice,

56:21 and meat of any bird they desire.

56:22 And (for them are) fair women (Houris) with large, (beautiful) eyes,

56:23 (so beautiful), as if they were pearls preserved in their shells,

56:24 as a reward for their good deeds that they had done.

56:25 There,  they will never hear any idle or sinful talk,

56:26 Only (good and virtual speech and ) the greetings of 'Peace be on you!  Peace be on you!'

56:27 And for the people of the right? How (happy) would be the people of the right!

56:28 (They will be) amid thorn-less lote trees,

56:29 and among banana trees with fruits piled one above another,

56:30 and in long extended shades,

56:31 and by water flowing constantly,

56:32 and abundant fruits.

56:33 Never out of season nor forbidden.

56:34 And will be reclining on high raised couches.

56:35 (As for their wives), We would fashion them afresh,

56:36 making them virgins,

56:37 loving (their husbands), equal in age,

56:38 For those of the right hand.

56:39 (There would be) many (of them) from the earlier (generations).

56:40 And many from the later generations.

56:41 And the people of the left, how (miserable) will they be!

56:42 (They will be) in scorching heat and boiling water,

56:43 and in the shadow of black smoke.

56:44 which is neither cool nor refreshing!

56:45 Prior to this, they had the life of leisure and luxury (in the world).

56:46 They persisted in heinous sins.

56:47 They used to ask (mockingly), 'When we are dead and reduced to dust and bones, will we really be resurrected?

56:48 And also our forefathers.

56:49 (Tell them, O Prophet  ﷺ) 'Indeed, all (of you) of the earlier and later times,

56:50 will surely be gathered (together) for the appointed Day.'

56:51 Then you, O' misguided deniers,

56:52 will certainly eat from (the bitter fruit of) the trees of Zaqqum (which grows in the bottom of Hell),

56:53 (and) fill your bellies with it.

56:54 Then on top of that you shall drink boiling water.

56:55 'Which you will drink like a thirst stricken camel!'

56:56 Such will be their accommodation on the Day of Judgment.

56:57 It is We Who created you. So why do you not believe?

56:58 (Just) think about (the semen) you emit.

56:59 Is it you who create (a child out of) it, or is it We Who do so?

56:60 We have decreed death among you, and nothing can stop Us,

56:61 from transforming and recreating you in forms unknown to you.

56:62 You have known the first creation, then why do you not reflect?

56:63 Have you ever considered the seed you sow (in the ground)?

56:64 Is it you who cause it to grow, or is it We Who do so?

56:65 If it be Our Will, We could crumble your harvest into chaff, and you would then be left  lamenting,

56:66 (saying) 'We are indeed ruined.'

56:67 In fact, we have been deprived (of our livelihood).'

56:68 Did you think about the water your drink?

56:69 Was it you who brought it down from the rain-cloud or We?

56:70 If We wish, We could make it salty. So why are not you grateful?

56:71 Did you ever think about the fire you make (from logs)?

56:72 Did you bring the trees (and forests) into being? Or is it We Who causes them to into being?

56:73 We have made it (the fire) a reminder for and a provision for the needy.

56:74 So glorify and praise the name of your Supreme Lord!

56:75 Nay, I  swear by the positions of the stars.

Imam Bukhari translated (بِمَوَاقِعِ النُّجُومِ) as 'the verses definite in meaning (آيَاتٌ مُحْكَمَاتٌ )', in his Book, 'Bukhari # 65, Tafseer Al-Quran'

56:76 And it is, indeed, a very solemn oath if you only knew!

56:77 It is indeed a noble Quran,

56:78 kept in a well-protected record;

56:79 touched by none except the purified (angels).

56:80 It is a revelation from the Lord of the Worlds.

56:81 How can you take this message (the Quran) lightly?

56:82 He gives your provisions, and you deny Him.

56:83 Why then (are you helpless) when the soul (of a dying person among you) reaches (his) throat,

56:84 while you are looking on.

56:85 And We are nearer to him than you, but you cannot see.

56:86 Thus, if (you think) you are not subject to reckoning, why can´t you,

56:87 bring that soul back, if what you say is true.

56:88 And if the dying person had been (the believer and) nearest (to Allah),

56:89 for him there is comfort and bounty, and a garden of bliss.

56:90 And if the deceased is one of the people of the right,

56:91 then (he will be told), 'Greetings to you from the people of the right.'

56:92 But if the deceased happens is among those who rejected and went astray.

56:93 (He shall have) the hot boiling water (as a welcome) for him.

56:94 And the burning in Hell fire.

56:95 Surely, this is an absolute truth.

56:96 So glorify the name of your Lord, the Supreme.

The Iron

Al-Hadid | Sura # 57 | 29 verses | Madinan

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful

57:1 Whatever is in the heavens and the earth glorifies Allah, and He is the Almighty, All Wise.

57:2 To Him belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth. He gives life and causes death and He has power over all things.

57:3 He is the First, and the Last, He is the Manifest (apparent) and the Immanent (hidden and actually present through out the material world) and He knows about all the things.

57:4 It is He Who created the heavens and the earth in 6 days and then establish the authority (of the Cosmos) on the Throne.  He knows what goes into the earth and what comes forth from it, and what descends from the heaven and what ascends to it. And He is with you wherever you are. And Allah is  All Seer of what you do.

57:5 To Him belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth. And to Allah all matters are returned.

57:6 He merges the night into the day and merges the day into the night. He knows what is in your hearts.

57:7 Believe in Allah and His Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), and spend (in His Way) out of what He has made you trustees. Those of you who believe and spend (in His way), they will be greatly rewarded.

The above verse clarifies that the wealth earned by people in this world is actually the wealth on which they are made trustees. They are required to spend it on themselves, their families and among the needy in the world as per the guidelines of Sharia.

57:8 And what is the problem with you that you don’t believe in Allah? While the Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) is inviting you to believe in your Lord, and indeed Allah has taken your covenant (earlier) if you are real believers.

What was the covenant that was taken by Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) from all the people?

It is in Quran - وَإِذْ أَخَذَ رَبُّكَ مِن بَنِي آدَمَ مِن ظُهُورِهِمْ ذُرِّيَّتَهُمْ وَأَشْهَدَهُمْ عَلَىٰ أَنفُسِهِمْ أَلَسْتُ بِرَبِّكُمْ ۖ قَالُوا بَلَىٰ ۛ شَهِدْنَا ۛ أَن تَقُولُوا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ إِنَّا كُنَّا عَنْ هَـٰذَا غَافِلِينَ [ (O Prophet ﷺ), remind mankind about the incident when your Lord brought into existence the offspring from the loins of Adam (عليه السلام) and his descendants (virtually each single individual of mankind) and made them testify about themselves. Allah asked them : 'Am I not your Lord?' They all replied : 'Yes! We bear witness that You are.' This We did, lest you mankind should say on the Day of Resurrection: 'We were not aware of this fact that You are our Lord and that there will be a Day of Judgment. ] (Al-A'raaf - 172)

57:9 It is He Who sends down clear revelations to His servant (Prophet Mohammad ﷺ), so that He may bring you out from the darkness into the light.  Surely, Allah is full of Kindness and Most Merciful to you.

Belief in Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) is essential part of Iman. The above verse explains that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) is the only one who brings the people out of darkness into the light of Iman. Without him, there is no Iman, no Islam and no Ihsan.

57:10 What is the problem with you that you do not spend in the Way of Allah, whereas to Allah belongs the inheritance of the heavens and the earth? Those of you who spent and fought in the Cause of Allah before the victory (of Makka), shall receive higher ranks of honor than the others who spent and fought thereafter. Yet Allah has promised you all a good reward, and Allah is aware of all your actions.

57:11 Who will make a loan of goodness to Allah, so that He may multiply it for him and reward him generously?

The meaning of loan in the above verse is 'the charity to the needy'. Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) promises that whatever you spend, you will get it back multiplied in this world and in Hereafter, both.

57:12 On the Day (of judgment) you shall see the believing men and the believing women, with their light shining before them and by their right hands. (It will be said to them) 'Glad tidings for you this Day! (You shall enter the) gardens under which rivers flow (Paradise), to reside  there in forever! Truly, this is the greatest success!'

57:13 On that Day the hypocrite men and hypocrite women will say to the true believers, 'Wait for us, that we may borrow some of your light.' But they will be told, 'Go away! Seek your light elsewhere.' So a wall with a gate shall be set up between them. Inside there shall be (Allah's) Mercy, and outside all along there shall be punishment of Hell.

57:14 (The hypocrites) will call them (believers): 'Were we not with you (in the world)?' They (believers) will reply,  'Yes! But you led yourselves into temptations, you waited and doubted (about faith); and you were deceived by false desires until the command of Allah came, while the chief deceiver (Satan) deceived you about Allah.'

57:15 Today no ransom will be accepted from you, nor from those who rejected the truth. Your home is the (Hell) Fire. It is more fitting place for you. What a miserable destination.

57:16 Has not the time yet come for those who believe,  that their hearts should soften with humility and submit  in the face of Allah’s Remembrance  and what has come down of the truth (the Quran)? And (has not the time yet come) that they should not be like those who were given the Book before? A long time has passed over them (after they received the Book) and so their hearts have hardened; and many among them (have become) transgressors.

57:17 Know that Allah gives life to the earth after its death! Indeed We have made clear the revelations to you so that you may understand.

57:18 For charitable men and women who have loaned Allah a loan of goodness, it will be multiplied for them, and they will have a generous reward.

57:19 Those who believe in Allah and His Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), they are the truthful and the true witnesses in the sight of their Lord; they shall have their reward and their light. But those who disbelieve and reject Our revelations; they shall be the inmates of Hellfire.

57:20 Know that the life of this world is just a play, amusement, luxury, mutual boasting to one another and rivalry in wealth and children. It is like a rain that helps plants grow, pleasing the growers, but then it dries up and you see it turn yellow, then it becomes stubble. There is severe punishment in the Hereafter, as well as forgiveness from Allah and (His) approval. The life of this world is just an illusion.

57:21 Hasten for the forgiveness of your Lord, and Paradise whose expanse is as wide as that of the skies and the earth has been prepared for those who believe in Allah and His Apostles. This is the bounty of Allah which He bestows on whosoever He please and Allah is limitless in His blessings.

57:22 No calamity (or blessing) can befalls on the earth or on yourselves, except (that which is inscribed) in a book (of Decrees), before We bring it into existence. Surely, that is easy for Allah.

57:23 (We let you know this) so that you neither grieve over what you have missed nor boast over what He has granted you. For Allah does not like whoever is arrogant and boastful.

In the above two verses, Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) is teaching us to be content with whatever has been given to us. We need not be boastful for His rewards and not excessively lament on the difficulties we face in the world. Pray for the safety from the calamities and be grateful to Him for His bounties and remain content in life and look for His approval in everything we do.

57:24 Those who are stingy and promote stinginess among people, and whoever turns away (should know that) Allah (alone) is truly the Self-Sufficient (and) Praiseworthy.

57:25 Indeed, We sent Our Apostles with clear proofs, and with them We sent down the Scripture and the balance (of justice) so that people may administer justice. And We sent down iron with its great mighty benefits for humanity, and means for Allah to prove who (is willing to) stand up for Him and His Apostles without seeing Him.  Surely Allah is All Powerful, Almighty.

57:26 And indeed, We sent Nooh and Ibrahim (عليهم السلام), and bestowed in their offspring Prophet-hood and Scripture.  Some of their (followers) were guided ones, but many of them were rebellious.

57:27 Then, We had many Apostles follow in their footsteps, one after another. (Eventually), We sent, Isa Ibn Maryam (عليه السلام) and gave him the Injeel. We instilled compassion and mercy in the hearts of those who followed him. (As for) the monasticism, We did not impose it on them. They invented it themselves. (By such means), they sought the acceptance and the pleasure of Allah. Yet, they did not abide by the demands of monasticism. We granted the reward to those of them who believed. Most of them, (however), are evildoers!

Monasticism or Ruhbaniyya has never been an essential part of Islam anytime during human civilization. Sometimes people impose it on themselves in order to get Allah's (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) approval.

Monasticism started in Christians in the beginning of 3rd century AD in which some of them looked upon asceticism as a moral ideal and regarded celibacy (abstinence/maidenhood) as superior to marriage and matrimonial responsibilities. They considered that it was not appropriate for those those who performed religious services in Churches to marry, have children and be involved in other essential worldly chores. Gradually, this became an epidemic in the Christian world by the end of 3rd century AD .

Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) says that it was not imposed on them by their Prophet (عليه السلام) or in their scripture, but they did it seeking the acceptance of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ).

However, what they attempted was not in line with human nature, therefore, they could not meet the demands of monasticism imposed on them by themselves and got involved in all kinds of corruption in the name of monasticism.

57:28 O' you who believe! Fear Allah and have faith in His Apostle He will grant you twice (the portion of) His mercy. He will grant you light by which you shall walk (along the straight path of Islam)! And He will grant you forgiveness! Indeed, Allah is oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful!

57:29 So the people of the book may know that they do not have any control (or exclusive right) over (the distribution of) Allah´s bounties. In fact, the bounties rest in the hands of Allah, and He confers them upon whomever He wishes. Allah is the Lord of the highest Honor!
