Yaseen

Yaseen | Sura # 36 | 83 verses | Makkan

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful

36:22 And (when the people of the town asked the man to desist, he said) why should I not worship Him Who has created me and to Whom you shall be returned?

36:23 How could I take besides Him other gods whose intercession would not be of any benefit to me, nor could they save me if the Most Compassionate (Lord) intended to harm me?

36:24   If I do so, I would indeed be in manifest error.

36:25 'For me, I have faith in the Lord of you (all) : listen, then, to me!'

36:26 (But the disbelievers killed him.) Then, It was said (to him) : 'Enter Paradise.'  He said : 'Would that my people knew (what I know),

36:27 that my Lord has forgiven me and made me among the honored ones!'

36:28 And We did not send any soldiers from the heavens against his people after his death, nor did We need to.

36:29 For all it took was one shriek, whereupon they fell down lifeless.

36:30 Alas for those people, Whenever an Apostle came to them, they used to mock at him.

There are differences of opinion among scholars about the 3 Apostles that were sent to these people. Some say that they were not Apostles, rather they were the representatives of Isa (عليه السلام) who went to the Syrian city of Antioch. Some say that they were indeed Apostles sent by Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) to a town not disclosed. Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) and His Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) know best.

36:31 Do they not see? Many a town have We demolished prior to them. Verily, none of their dwellers ever returned!

36:32 And surely, all of them will be brought before Us.

36:33 And the dead land may serve as a sign for them; We give it life and produce from it grain for them, which they eat.

36:34 And We produce in it gardens of date-palms and grapes, and We cause springs of water to gush forth from it,

36:35 so they may eat its fruits. They did not do it themselves. So will they not be thankful?

36:36 Glory be to Him Who has created all things in pairs which the earth produces, as well as their own (human) kind, and other things which they don’t know.

36:37 And a clear sign for them is the night : We withdraw the day from it, and see, they get plunged into darkness.

36:38 And the sun travels for its fixed term. That is the design of the Almighty, All Knowing.

36:39 And We have determined phases for the moon until finally it becomes like an old date-stalk.

36:40 The sun is not allowed to reach the moon, nor does the night overtake the day, but each floats in their own orbit.

36:41 And another sign for them is that We carried their ancestors (with Nooh  عليه السلام) in the fully loaded Ark,

36:42 And We have created for them the like of it in which they sail.

36:43 And if We wish We could drown them with none to respond to their cry for help.  Nor would they be rescued.

36:44 Unless by a mercy from Us and (Our allowing them) to enjoy life for some time more until a term (determined).

36:45 And when it is said to them : 'Beware of that which is before you (punishments in the world) and that which is behind you (punishments in the Hereafter) so that you may receive Mercy.'

36:46 And yet there does not come to them a clear sign from among the signs of their Lord (a Revelation from among His Revelations), but they turn away from it (being averse to the admonition given therein).

36:47 And whenever they are asked : 'spend out of what Allah has given you,'  the disbelievers say to the believers : 'should we feed those whom Allah can feed Himself if He so chooses? (Indeed) you are in manifest error!'

36:48 And they say: 'When will this promise (of punishment will) occur if you are so truthful?'

36:49 All it takes is one Shriek that will seize them while they still arguing about it.

36:50 Then, neither they will be able to make a 'will', nor be able to return to their families.

36:51 And when the trumpet is sounded they will come out of their graves and hasten towards their Lord,

36:52 They will say : 'Woe to us! Who has raised us up from our place of sleep?' (It will be said to them) : 'This is what the Most Gracious (Allah) had promised and the Apostles spoke the truth!'

36:53 It will only be a (sound of the) a Trumpet, so behold! They all will be brought up before Us!

36:54 On that Day no one will suffer the least injustice and you will be compensated as per your deeds.

36:55 Truly the inhabitants of the Paradise on that Day will be busy rejoicing,

36:56 they and their spouses will be in (cool) shade, reclining on (canopied) couches.

36:57 There they will have fruits and whatever they desire.

36:58 And 'Peace! (be on you)' will be (their) greeting from their Most Merciful Lord.

36:59 And (then the disbelievers will be told), 'stand away (from the believers) this Day, O wicked ones!

36:60 O' Children of Adam, did I not command you not to follow Satan, for he is your sworn enemy,

36:61 and pray Me alone,  that is the straight path.

36:62 And yet, in spite of this, he (Satan) has led a great number of you astray.  Didn't you have common sense?

36:63 This is the Hell you were warned of.

36:64 Burn there in today, for your disbelieve.

36:65 We shall seal their lips that day; and their hands will speak, their feet testify to what they had done.

36:66 And had We willed, We could surely have blinded their eyes so that they would struggle for the way.  How then could they see?

36:67 And if it had been Our will, We could have transformed them (into lifeless bodies) in their places. Then neither they would have been able to go forward nor be able to turn back.

36:68 And for whomever a long life is granted, his body is weakened (because of his old age.). Do they not understand?

36:69 And We did not teach (the Prophet  ﷺ) poetry, nor it is suitable for him. This is simply a reminder and a manifest Quran.

36:70 (This is an illuminating Quran) to warn anyone who is truly alive, so that Allah’s verdict may be passed against the disbelievers.

36:71 Do they not see Our creation?  We created for them cattle which they own.

36:72 And We have subjected these animals to them, that they may ride on some and eat the meat of others,

36:73 and some have other benefits, (like milk) to drink. Will they not, then, be grateful?

36:74 And yet they have taken other (false) gods besides Allah hoping to get their help.

36:75 (Yet) they (these false gods) cannot help them, while they (the disbelievers themselves) are ready warriors for them.

36:76 So do not let their remarks grieve you (O' Prophet ﷺ). We indeed know whatever they hide and whatever they disclose.

36:77 Don’t the people see that We have created them from a sperm? Yet, they (stand up) as open opponent.

36:78 And he (the disbeliever) draws comparisons for Us, and forgets his own creation. He says, ‘who shall revive the bones when they have decayed?’

36:79 Say, 'He will revive them who has created them the first time, and He has knowledge of all (His) creation.

36:80 It is He Who produces for you the spark from the green tree to kindle therewith your own fires.

36:81 Can the One Who created the heavens and the earth not resurrect these (deniers)?' Yes (He can).   For He is the supreme Creator, All Knowing.

36:82 Surely, when He intends (to create) a thing, it is only that He says : 'Be' and there it is (it is created instantly).

36:83 Glory be to Him in Whose hands is the Kingdom of all things; and to Whom you shall all be returned.

Those Drawn Up In Ranks

As-Saaffaat | Sura # 37 | 182 verses | Makkan

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful

37:1 (I swear) By those (believing army men) lined up in ranks (ready to fight in the battle field),

37:2 by those (believing) horse riders who scold their horses (to discipline them before the battle),

37:3 (and) by those (believing army men who) read Quran (when they have a respite in the battle field).

37:4 Truly, your God is one,

37:5 the Lord of the heavens and the earth, and all that lies between them, and Lord of every point of the sun’s risings.

37:6 Surely, We have adorned the lowest sky with beautiful stars,

37:7 and protected it against all rebellious devils.

37:8 (So that the devils) may not listen to the highest assembly (of angels) but be repelled from every side,

37:9 (and) driven away. For them there is a (unending) continuous punishment.

37:10 If one (of the devils) succeeds in snatching away a fragment (of knowledge), a piercing flame follows him (in hot pursuit).

37:11 So ask them (O' Prophet  ﷺ), which is harder to create; them or other marvels of Our creation?  Indeed, We created them (humans) from a sticky clay.

37:12 In fact, you (O' Prophet ﷺ ) are astonished (by their denial), while they make fun (of you).

37:13 When they are reminded, they don’t pay attention.

37:14 When they see a sign, they laugh at it,

37:15 and they say it is nothing but  pure magic.

37:16 'Is it possible? Once we die and wither away into dust and bones, would we really be brought back to life?'

37:17 'Also our forefathers of old times?'

37:18 Say (O' Apostle ﷺ), 'Yes and you shall then be humiliated.'

37:19 (On that Day) there will only be a single (call of the) Trumpet, and at once they will begin to see (what they denied all through their lives).'

37:20 They will say : 'Woe to us! is this the Day of Judgement.

37:21 (They will be told),  'This is the Day of (Final) Decision which you used to deny.'

37:22 (Allah will command the angels) 'Gather (all) the wrongdoers along with their peers, and whatever they used to worship,

37:23 other than Allah, (and) 'then show them the way to Hell,

37:24 and detain them, for they must be questioned.'

37:25 (Then they will be asked) 'What is the matter with you that you can no longer help each other?'

37:26 Nay! On that Day they shall all be submissive.

37:27 They will turn at each other, throwing blame.

37:28 The misled will say (to their leaders), 'It was you who deluded us away from what is right.'

37:29 They (the leaders will) say: 'No! Rather, you yourselves were not believers, (with no inclination and intention to believe).

37:30 'We had no authority over you. Nay! You were transgressing people'.

37:31 'The decree of our Lord has come to pass against us (all) : we will certainly taste (the punishment).'

37:32 'We misled you, and we were ourselves misled.'

37:33 Surely on that Day they (all) will share the punishment.

37:34 Thus, shall We deal with the criminals.

37:35 When they were told : 'There is no god but Allah,' they used to puff themselves up with pride,

37:36 and used to say : 'Should we abandon our gods for the sake of an insane poet?'

37:37 In fact, he came with the truth, confirming (earlier) Apostles.

37:38 Surely, you shall taste the painful punishment.

37:39 And you will be repaid only for what you used to do.

37:40 Except for Allah´s sincere servants.

37:41 For them there is (in Paradise) a special provision.

37:42 (And) fruits (of every type). And they will be honored,

37:43 in the gardens of bliss,

37:44 on the thrones facing one another.

37:45 A cup from a flowing spring will be passed among them,

37:46 crystal-white, delicious to drink.

37:47 It will neither harm (them), nor will they be intoxicated by it.

37:48 With them will be chaste females restraining their glances (for their husbands) with wide and beautiful eyes,

37:49 as if they were pristine pearls.

37:50 Then they will turn to one another inquisitively.

37:51 One of them will say, 'I once had a companion (in the world),

37:52 who used to ask (me), ‘Do you actually believe (in resurrection)?'

37:53 'When we have died and become dust and bones, will we be called to account?'

37:54 It will be said (to him) : 'Will you (like to) look down (to see your friend)?'

37:55 Then he (and others) will look and spot him in the midst of the Hellfire.

37:56 He would call out (to his ex-friend in the Hellfire), 'I swear by Allah, you had almost ruined me.'

37:57 Had it not been for the grace of my Lord, I (too) would have certainly been among those brought (to Hell).'

37:58 (The believers in paradise will say) : 'Are we then never to die (again),

37:59 except for our first death, and will we really not be punished?'

37:60 Truly, this is the ultimate success.

37:61 Everyone should strive to attain this honor.

37:62 Is this (bliss of living in paradise) a better accommodation or the tree of Zaqqum (in Hell)?

37:63 Truly, We have made it a trail for the wrongdoers.

37:64 Surely it is a tree that grows in the bottom of the Hell;

37:65 Its fruit is like devils' heads,

37:66 and (the people in Hell) will eat from it and fill their bellies with it.

37:67 Then on top of that, they will be given a blend of boiling liquid.

37:68 Then they will ultimately return to (their place in) Hell.

37:69   In fact, they found their fathers on the wrong way,

37:70   so they rushed (to follow) in their footsteps.

37:71  And surely most of the earlier generations had strayed before them,

37:72 although We had certainly sent warners (prophets) among them.

37:73  See then what was the end of those who had been warned.

37:74  But not the sincere servants of Allah.

37:75  (And remember when) Nooh (عليه السلام) called Us, and how excellent was Our response.

37:76  We saved him and his people from great distress,

37:77  and made his descendants the sole survivors,

37:78  and left for him (a good name) among generations to come,  in later times.

37:79  Peace be upon Nooh (from Us) among the (people of) worlds!

37:80  Indeed, this is how We reward the righteous.

37:81 He was one of Our believing servants.

37:82 Then we drowned the others.

37:83 Surely, among those who followed his (Nooh’s  عليه السلام) way,  was Ibrahim (عليه السلام).

37:84 (Remember) when he came to his Lord with a pure obedient heart.

37:85 (And) when he said to (the brother of) his father and to his folk : What is it that you worship?

37:86 Why do you solicit false gods instead of Allah?

37:87 'Then what do you think about the Lord of the worlds?'

37:88 He later looked up to the stars (in contemplation),

37:89 and said : 'Surely, I am sick (of seeing you worship these idols.  Then he avoided going to the feast of the pagans outside the town.)

37:90 So they turned away from him, and departed (for the festival).

37:91 Thereupon he (entered their temple and) approached their idols, and said, 'Will you not eat (of the offerings put before you)?

37:92 'What is wrong with you that you don't utter a word?'

37:93 Then he turned and struck them with his right arm (breaking them all except the one big one).

37:94 Later, his people came rushing towards him (furiously).

37:95 He said, 'How can you worship things you carve with your own hands,

37:96 when Allah has created you and whatever you make?’

37:97 They (were furious and) said, (let us) 'Construct a furnace and throw him into the burning fire.'

37:98 And so they sought to harm him, but We humiliated them.

37:99 Ibrahim (عليه السلام) said (after he came out unscathed from the fire) : 'Surely, I am going to my Lord. He will guide me!

37:100 (He prayed) My Lord, bless me with a righteous son.'

37:101 So We gave him the good news of a forbearing son (Ismail-

37:102 When he (son) was old enough to walk with him, he said : O' my son! Surely, I have seen in the dream that I am slaughtering you (as a sacrifice to Allah), so what do you think!' He said : 'O my father! Do what you are commanded (by Allah), you shall find me patient.'

37:103 Then when they submitted (to Allah’s Will), and Ibrahim (عليه السلام) laid him on his forehead (for sacrifice),

37:104 We called out to Ibrahim (عليه السلام).

37:105 You have already fulfilled (Our commandment of the) dream.' Indeed, this is how We reward the righteous.

37:106 Indeed, this was a big trial (for both).

37:107 'Thus, We offered in exchange (for his son) the great sacrifice (and made it one of the important rites of Hajj),

37:108 and blessed Ibrahim (عليه السلام) (with honorable mention) among later generations.

37:109 Peace be upon Ibrahim (from Us).

37:110 This is how We reward the righteous.

37:111 He was one of Our believing servants.

37:112 (Earlier) We had given him the good news of Ishaq (عليه السلام) a prophet, and one of the righteous.

From the above verses, we understand that Ishaq (عليه السلام) was the elder brother of Ismail (عليه السلام). The news of the birth of Ishaq (عليه السلام) was given to Ibrahim (عليه السلام) earlier by the angels sent by Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ). Whereas, Ibrahim (عليه السلام) prayed for Ismail (عليه السلام) and his prayer was granted by Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ).

Description of the events of the lives of the Prophets are provided in Quran at different places as per the understanding requirement of the people. Thus, the sequence of events is not chronological in order because they are not stories. People need to learn from these events to safeguard their Iman and respect these prophets.

37:113 We had blessed him with Ishaq (عليهم السلام) as well. Some of their descendants did good, while others clearly wronged themselves.

37:114 And We certainly showed favor to Musa and Haroon (عليهم السلام).

37:115 We saved them and their people from the great distress;

37:116 and helped them, so they became victorious.

37:117 We gave them the clear book (Torah),

37:118 and guided them on the straight path.

37:119 And We blessed them (with honorable mention) among later generations.

37:120 Peace be upon Musa and Haroon.

37:121 Indeed, this is how We reward the righteous.

37:122 They both were among Our believing servants.

37:123 Surely, Elias (عليه السلام) was one of the Apostles.

37:124 When he said to his people : 'Will you not fear (Allah)?

37:125 How can you invoke Baal (Idol) and forsake the Most Gracious Creator,

37:126 Allah, your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers?'

37:127 But they denied him (Elias  عليه السلام), so they will certainly be brought forth (for punishment),

37:128 Except for those sincere servants of Allah (who followed Ilyas (عليه السلام)

37:129 We blessed him (with honorable mention) among later generations.

37:130 Peace be upon Ilyas and his family.

37:131 Indeed, this is how We reward the righteous.

37:132  He was one of Our believing servants.

37:133 And indeed Loot (عليه السلام) was among the Apostles.

37:134 We saved him and all of his family,

37:135 except an old woman (his wife, who was) among those who stayed behind,

37:136 then We destroyed the rest.

37:137 You (Makkans) certainly pass by their ruins in the mornings,

37:138 and at night; will you not then reflect?

37:139 And Yunus (عليه السلام) was indeed one of the Apostles.

37:140 (Remember) when he went away in a  overloaded ship.

37:141 Then (to save the ship from sinking which was caught in a sea storm) he drew straws (with other passengers). (But) He lost (and jumped into the sea).

37:142 While he blamed himself (for embarking on this travel), a  big fish swallowed him.

37:143 Had it not been that he was one of those who praised and glorified Allah,

37:144 he would have remained in the belly of the fish until the Day of Resurrection.

37:145 But We cast him onto the open (shore. He was totally) worn out,

37:146 and We caused a plant of gourd (squash) to grow over him.

37:147 Then We  sent him to a nation of 100,000 people or even more.

37:148 They believed in him, so We permitted them to enjoy their life for a while.

37:149 Now ask them (the disbelievers, O' Prophet ﷺ, does it make sense that) your Lord should have only daughters while they choose to have sons?

37:150 Or did We create the angels as females while they were witnesses?

37:151 Surely, they invent a lie when they say,

37:152 'Allah has children.'  They are simply liars.

37:153 Has He chosen daughters instead of sons?

37:154 What is (wrong) with you? How do you reach your judgments?

37:155 Will you not be mindful (of the repercussions of such nonsensical claims)?

37:156 Or do you have (any) compelling proof?

37:157 Then bring (us) your scripture, if what you say is true!

37:158 They have invented a kinship between Allah and the jinns, but indeed the jinns know quite well that they will be brought for account (before Allah).

37:159 Glorified is Allah far above what they claim!

37:160 Except His sincere servants (who do not attribute such things to Him).

37:161 Surely you (pagans) and whatever (idols) you worship,

37:162 can never lure (anyone) away from Him,

37:163 except those (destined) to burn in Hell.

37:164 (The angels say), there is not one of us without an assigned station (of worship).

37:165 Surely, we (angels) stand in rows (for prayers);

37:166 And we are indeed the ones (constantly) glorifying Him.

37:167 They (disbelievers) used to say,

37:168 'If only we had a Reminder like (those of) earlier peoples,

37:169 then we would indeed be Allah’s sincere servants.'

37:170 (Now the Quran has come) But they disbelieve in it, and they will come to know (the consequences of their disbelieve soon)!

37:171 Indeed Our word (of promise) has already gone forth in respect of Our servants (Apostles) sent with Our Message (of guidance and warning),

37:172 that surely they would be victorious,

37:173 and that Our hosts (believers) will prevail.

37:174 So (O' Prophet  ﷺ) turn away from the disbelievers for a while,

37:175 and watch them, and they shall see (your victory).

37:176 Do they really want to hasten Our punishment?

37:177 Yet when it descends upon them,  how evil will that morning be for those who had been warned!

37:178 And So (O' Prophet  ﷺ) turn away from the disbelievers for a while,

37:179 and watch, and they shall see (your victory).

37:180 Glory be to your Lord, the Lord of Honor, He is free from what they ascribe to Him.

37:181 And peace be upon the Apostles.

37:182 And praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds.

Saad

Saad | Sura # 38 | 88 verses | Makkan

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful

38:1 Saad. (I swear) By the Qur'an, that contains all that one ought to know.

'Saad' is known as ‘Solemn Verse' (Ayat-e-Muqatta'at - آیتِ مقطعات).

Fourteen Arabic alphabets have been used, in varied combinations, in 14 ‘Solemn Verses' (Ayaat-e-Muqatta'at - آیاتِ مقطعات) in the form of initials of 29 Chapters (سورة) of holy Quran. Saad ( ص ) is one of them.

Since Quran is 'Mubeen' (الْمُبِينِ); its description is clear and manifest. The meanings of all the verses of Quran, including 'Solemn Verses' (آیاتِ مقطعات) are surely known to its principle addressee, ie., Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم). It is also likely that Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) has informed the meanings of these Verses to some of his Sahabah and Awliya Allah.

We believe in whatever is meant by the 'Solemn Verses' (آیاتِ مقطعات) by Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) and His Apostle Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم).

Since we have been commanded to read the Quran carefully and try to understand the significance of every verse of the Quran, we do ponder over these verses. And when we think, by focusing our attention towards Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) and His Apostle Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) for guidance, it comes to our mind that the 'Solemn Verses' (آیاتِ مقطعات) are actually the 'Solemn Titles of Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) given by Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) throughout the Quran. Our understanding is based on the fact that Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) has addressed Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) in the Quran by specific names, like Muzzammil (مزمل - O' beloved who covers self in a coverlet), Muddassir (مدثر - O' beloved, who covers self in a bed sheet). With this understanding, it is most likely that Prophet’s (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) other names / titles have been mentioned in Quran by denoting certain initials/alphabets.

38:2 (This is the truth),  yet the disbelievers are (entrenched) in arrogance and opposition.

38:3 How many generations have We destroyed before them? They cried out when there was no longer time for escape!

38:4 Now, they are astonished that a warner has come to them from among themselves. And the disbelievers say, 'This is a magician, a liar'

38:5 'Has he made (all) gods into One god.  This is indeed a strange thing!'

38:6 Their chiefs go about saying (one another), 'Go home and hold on to your gods staunchly. This thing is (purposely) designed (to uproot you from this land).'

38:7 'We have never heard of this in the latest religion (Christianity). This (concept of One God) is nothing but a made-up tale. (Even the Christians subscribe to trinity).'

38:8 'Why was the (divine) advice revealed to him (and not to us)? (And why he was chosen) among us?   In fact, they are in doubt about  My Reminder. And (they do so because) they have not yet tasted My punishment.

38:9 Or do they own and control the treasures of the Mercy of your Lord, the Almighty, the Giver (of all bounties).

38:10 Or (is it because) the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and everything in between, belongs to them? Then, let them climb their way (to heaven, if their claim is true).

38:11 They are no more than a routed band of (disintegrated) parties (awaiting a defeat, as certain as the defeat of the hordes of old times, who rejected the earlier Apostles).

38:12 Before them the people of Nooh (عليه السلام) denied, and the A'ad, and the Pharaoh of formidable strongholds,

38:13 and Thamud, and the people of Loot (عليه السلام), and the residents of the wood (Madian); such were the groups of people,

38:14 each of them denied the Apostles, therefore the retribution was justified.

38:15 These 'pagans' are awaiting nothing but a single Shriek (sound of a massive blast that will kill them all) that cannot be stopped.

38:16 They say (in a taunting way), 'Our Lord! Hasten for us our share (of the punishment) before the Day of Reckoning.'

38:17 Be patient (O Prophet  ﷺ) with what they say.  And remember Our servant, Dawood (عليه السلام), the man of strength (and Kingdom). Indeed, he (constantly) turned (to Allah).

38:18 Surely, We made the mountains to glorify Our praises with him (Dawood  عليه السلام) in the evening and at day break.

38:19 And the birds, too, with all their flocks, join in singing with him.

38:20 We strengthened his kingdom, and gave him wisdom and sound judgment.

38:21 Has the story of the two plaintiffs, who scaled the (wall of Dawood  عليه السلام) sanctuary, reached you (O Prophet  ﷺ)?

38:22 When they reached Dawood (عليه السلام), he was alarmed, (but) they said, 'Do not be alarmed. (We are) two disputants. One of us has wronged the other, so judge between us with truth, and do not be unjust, and guide us to the right way.

38:23 One of them said, 'This, here, is my brother (in religion). He had ninety-nine lambs, while I had only one lamb.  Yet he said to me, 'Hand over your one lamb to me.' He persuaded (and prevailed over) me with his (eloquent) speech.'

38:24 (Dawood  عليه السلام) said, 'He certainly wronged you by asking for your lamb to join his herd (of ninety-nine lambs). Indeed, most friends and family members often treat each other unjustly, except those who believe and perform righteous deeds.  Such ones (however) are few.' And then Dawood (عليه السلام) thought, that We had put him through a test (by this incident).  So, he sought forgiveness of his Lord. He fell down prostrate and turned to Him in repentance.

The above is the 'Verse of Sajda' (آیت سجدہ). If someone is reading it alone, should do prostration (سجدة) alone. If it is read loudly in an audience, the reciter and all the listeners should do 'Prostration of Recitation' (Sajda-e-Tilaawah - سجدة التلاوة) individually.

The Prostration can be done in sitting or standing position. In the Hanafi school of thought, 'Prostration of Recitation' (Sajda-e-Tilaawah - سجدة التلاوة) is obligatory (Fardh). With Shafii and Maliki, it is Sunnah.

It is in Hadith 'When you have recited a verse requiring Sajdah-e-Tilaawaah, you should go down for Sajdah with Allahu-Akbar and rise from Sajdah with Allahu-Akbar, which may be performed sitting, though it is preferable to prostrate oneself from the standing position (Abu Dawood)

Have the intention to do Prostration of recitation (سجدة التلاوة). The place where you are reading/reciting Quran should be clean. Turn your face towards Qibla, say (quietly) Allahu Akbar, go into prostration once, recite the 'Tasbih of Sajdah' 'Subhana Rabbi al-A'alaa' (سبحان ربّي الاعلى ) at least 3 times and raise from the Sajda saying Allahu Akbar.

38:25 So We forgave him. He has surely a high rank with Us and an excellent place of final return.

38:26 ( We said), 'O Dawood  عليه السلام), We have certainly appointed you Our Vicegerent on the land.  Therefore, settle the disputes between people with justice. Do not follow the desires and whims (of the people) that may lead you away from Allah´s path.  Indeed, there is a severe punishment for those who stray from the path of Allah, because they forget the day of reckoning.

38:27 We did not create the heaven, the earth and everything in it without a purpose.   (In fact) those who do not believe, think otherwise. Misery is for the unbelievers. They will be in Fire (forever).

38:28 Should We treat those who believe and do good deeds, on par with those who create mischief in the earth? Should We treat the righteous,  on par the sinners? (The answers is obvious, no.)

38:29 (The Quran is) a blessed Book which We have revealed to you (O Prophet  ﷺ) so that the people of understanding may reflect on its verses, and those who understand, become mindful.

38:30 To Dawood (عليه السلام) We gave (a son), Sulaiman (عليه السلام). What a wonderful servant (of Allah was Sulaiman عليه السلام)!  Indeed he was one repeatedly turning towards (Allah).

38:31 (Mention the incident) When the well-trained horses of the highest breed were displayed before him in one afternoon,

38:32 and he said : 'Surely I did love the worldly wealth instead of remembering my Lord (during Asr time)', till the time was over, and the sun had hidden in the veil (of night),

38:33 'Bring them back to me'. (And when the horses were brought back) He began to slash their legs and napes (with his sword).

38:34 And indeed, We did test Sulaiman (عليه السلام) and We placed on his throne a body (so he lost his kingdom for a while), then he did return (to Allah with repentance, and to his throne by the Grace of Allah).

There are differences of opinions among scholars as to what happened and what kind of body was placed on his throne and after how many days Sulaiman (عليه السلام) regained his Kingdom back.

From the above verse, it is clear that it was a test for Prophet Sulaiman (عليه السلام). When he turned towards Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) in repentance, everything was restored back. Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) granted his supplication and he was given a Kingdom, the like of which is not to be given to anyone in the world.

38:35 He said : 'My Lord! Forgive me, and bestow upon me a kingdom such as shall not be given to anyone after me. You are indeed the Giver (of all bounties).'

38:36 So We gave him control over the wind.   Upon his orders, it gently used to blow towards the region of his choice.

38:37 And (We subjected to him) Jinns, who could build (buildings) and dive (in the oceans).

38:38 and others that were bound in shackles.

The mischievous Satans among the Jinns were imprisoned by Sulaiman (عليه السلام) so that they were not in a position to create trouble on Earth.

38:39 (We said to Sulaiman  عليه السلام) : 'This is Our gift, so you spend or withhold, no account will be asked.'

38:40 Surely he is in proximity with Us and will have an excellent place of final abode.

38:41 And remember Our servant (Prophet) Ayyub (عليه السلام), when he called : My Lord, Satan has afflicted me with hardship and suffering.'

38:42 (We responded), 'Strike (the ground) with your foot; here is a (spring for you) for cool bath and drink.'

38:43 And We restored to him his family and many more with them, as a grace from Ourselves, and (it is) a reminder (about Allah's bestowal) for the people of understanding.

38:44 (And We told him), 'Take in your hand a bundle of (thin) grass, and strike (your wife) with it, and fulfill your oath (you made during your sickness). What an excellent servant (he was)!  Indeed, he (constantly) turned (to Allah).

BRIEF HISTORY

Prophet Ayyub (عليه السلام) was the descendant of Prophet Ishaq (عليه السلام). He lived in Syria. He was very humble and used to glorify Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) devotedly. Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) had provided him with many bounties, like big house, lands, farms, live stock, servants and many children.

Then Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) tested him. He was striped of all his wealth and possessions. But, it did not matter to Ayyub (عليه السلام) as he remained committed to the glorification of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ). Then Ayyub (عليه السلام) lost all his children, one by one. Then he lost his health as he was afflicted with a loathsome disease with severe pain. The disease worsened day by day to an extent that people of his community abandoned him outside the town where no one visited him except his wife who remained with him through all these trials. She worked in the homes of people to make a living and to look after him who was abandoned alone. Even in this condition, Ayyub (عليه السلام) did not loose heart and remained steadfast in the glorification of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ).

Ayyub (عليه السلام) remained in this state for about 18 years. Then one day he prayed 'My Lord, Satan has afflicted me with hardship and suffering'. And Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) responded by saying 'Strike (the ground) with your foot; here is a (spring for you) for cool bath and drink.' After he took bath from that spring, Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) removed all afflictions from him and he became as sound as he had been previously. His wife was not there at that time. When she returned to him, she did not recognize her husband standing in front of her hale and hearty. She asked him, 'May Allah bless you, have you seen the Prophet of Allah who was ill here? And by Allah, I have not seen a man, more similar to him when he was healthy, than you. Prophet Ayyub (عليه السلام) said 'it is me only'. Later Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) returned all his wealth, possessions and his children.

It is reported that Prophet Ayyub's (عليه السلام) wife had committed some mistake during his illness and he vowed that she will be called to account for that. When he regained health, Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) asked him to strike his wife with a bundle of thin grass leaves as fulfillment of his oath.

38:45 And remember Our servants Ibrahim, Ishaq and Yaqoob (عليهم السلام). They all had the insight and the strength of character.

38:46 Verily We did choose them for a special (purpose);  proclaiming the Message of the Hereafter.

38:47 And indeed they are among the best of the chosen ones in Our view.

38:48 And remember Ismail, Al-Yasaa and Dhul-Kifl  (عليهم السلام). They are all among the most pious.

38:49 All this is a remembrance (of the excellence of those We have mentioned).  Surely for those who take heed for themselves is an excellent place of return,

38:50 the Gardens of Eternity, whose gates will be opened for them.

38:51 In which they will recline (on thrones), calling therein for many a fruit and drink,

38:52 And with them will be pure, chaste-eyed spouses, well-matched.

38:53 This is what you are promised for the Day of reckoning.

38:54 Certainly, such is Our bestowal for you! It will never run out!

38:55 All this (is for the believers). But for the transgressors, an evil resort awaits them.

38:56 (For Unbelievers is) Hell, where they will burn. What an evil place to rest!

38:57 Such will be the reward for the wrongdoers. So they will taste scalding water and pus.

38:58 And other similar punishments.

38:59 (The misguided leaders will say to one another),  'Here is a crowd (of followers) being thrown in with us. They are not welcome, (for) they (too) will burn in the Fire.'

38:60 The followers will say : 'In fact, it is you who will have no welcome. It is you who brought this upon us. What an evil place of rest!'

38:61 (They will say), 'Our Lord! Whoever brought this upon us, double their punishment in the Fire.'

38:62 (The tyrants will say (to each other) : 'What is the matter with us that we don’t see those whom we considered to be lowly?

38:63 'Whom we used to take in mockery? Or is it that (they are here with us, but) our eyes have missed them (just as we turned our eyes from them in contempt in the world)?'

38:64 Surely, this is the very truth,  the people in the Hellfire will argue just like that.

38:65 Say (O' Prophet  ﷺ), 'I am only a warner, and there is no other god but Allah, the one, the omnipotent,

38:66 the Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is in between them, the Mighty, the Forgiving.'

38:67 Say, (O' Prophet  ﷺ), 'this (Quran) is momentous news,

38:68 from which you (pagans) are turning away.'

38:69 (Say) : 'I had no knowledge of the exalted angels when they argued (about the creation of Adam

38:70 What is revealed to me is that,  I am only sent with a clear warning.'

38:71 (Remember, O Prophet  ﷺ) When your Lord said to the angels, 'I am going to create a human being from clay.

38:72 And when I have fully formed him and have breathed into him of My spirit, Fall down in prostration in front of him.'

38:73 So the angels prostrated altogether,

38:74 except Satan, he was proud and was one of the disbelievers.'

38:75 Allah said : 'O Iblees! What prevented you from prostrating  to the one whom I have created with both of My own hands? Are you too arrogant, or do you think that you are one of the exalted ones?'

Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلّ) described Himself with majestic (جلالی) and graceful (جمالی) attributes, therefore He created this Universe on fear and delight (اُنس). Similar is the situation will all the attributes which are associated with Allah and His names (epithets). The complete Human (انسان الكامل) is comprehensiveness of all facts (حقايق) and individual natures (مفردات) of the Universe who was created with the attention of His majestic and graceful attributes (صفاتِ جلال و جمال). Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلّ) interpreted it by His two hands in the above verse with which Adam (عليه السلام) was created.

38:76 He said, 'I am better than him. You created me from fire and created him from clay.'

38:77 (Allah) said : 'Then get out from here, for surely, you are accursed,

38:78 and surely! My curse shall be on you till the Day of Resurrection.'

38:79 Iblees said : 'My Lord, then give me respite till the Day of Resurrection.'

38:80 (Allah) said : 'Surely, you are of those allowed respite,

38:81 Till the appointed day.'

38:82 (Satan) said : 'By Your might, I will surely mislead them all,

38:83 except Your chosen servants among them.'

38:84 Allah  said, 'This is the truth, I speak only the truth,

38:85 I will fill up Hell with you,  together with those who follow you.'

38:86 (O Prophet  ﷺ), tell them : 'I do not ask you any recompense for conveying this Message, nor do I pretend to be what I am not.

38:87 'It (the Quran) really is a reminder for all the worlds!'

38:88 You will most certainly come to know what it informs of,  after a time (appointed for you).

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful

39:1 The revelation of this Book (the Quran) is from Allah, the Almighty, the Wise.

39:2 Certainly We have revealed to you (O' Prophet ﷺ) the Book with the Truth. Therefore pray Allah, offering Him your sincere obedience.

39:3 Surely, the religion is completely the devotion to Allah (alone). As for those who take other protectors (idols) besides Him, (saying), 'We worship them only because they may bring us closer to Allah' (are misguided). Surely Allah will judge between all,  regarding what they differed about. Allah certainly does not guide whoever is persistent in lying and disbelief.

39:4 If Allah had intended to take a son, He could have chosen anyone He willed from whatever He created.  Glory be to Him (that He should have a son).! He is Allah, the One God, the One who holds absolute sway over all that exists.

39:5 He has created the heavens and the earth with the truth. He makes the night overtake the day and makes the day overtake the night. He has subjected the sun and the moon, each is running for an appointed term. Surely, He is the Almighty, Most Forgiving.

39:6 He has created you all from a single Nafs (Adam عليه السلام); then made his wife (Hawwa عليها السلام) from him. He has sent down for you of cattle 8 in pairs. He creates you in the wombs of your mothers, creation after creation in 3 layers of darkness.  Such is Allah, your Lord. The kingdom belongs to Him; there is no one worthy of worship but He. How can you then turn away?

39:7 If you disbelieve, then you should know that Allah does not need you. He does not like ingratitude from His servants. Therefore, if you are grateful,  He is pleased with you. On the Day of Judgement, no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another.  Ultimately, all of you have to return to your Lord. Then He will tell you the truth of all that you did in this life.  Surely He knows even the secrets of your hearts.

39:8 When a  man encounters some hard times, he calls upon his Lord, turning to Him in repentance. But when He bestows a favor from Him, he forget what he had supplicated to Him before, and  set up rivals to Allah in order to mislead others from His Way.   Say : 'Take pleasure in your disbelief for a while. Surely, you will be one of the inmates of the fire!'

39:9 Can the one who is obedient to Allah, prostrating or standing (in prayer) during the Hours of the night, fearing the Hereafter and hoping for the Mercy of the Lord (be compared with a disbeliever)? Say : 'Are those who know,  equal to those who don’t know?' It is only the people of understanding who will remember.

39:10 Say : O' My servants who have truly believed, fear your Lord; those who will do good deeds in this world shall receive a good reward. If it has become difficult to follow the Right Way where you live, then migrate, you will find that Allah’s earth is spacious. Those who endure with patience will be given limitless rewards.'

39:11 Say : 'I am commanded to pray Allah and serve none but Him,

39:12 and I am commanded to be the first of those who submit themselves to Allah as Muslims.'

39:13 Say : 'Surely, if I disobey my Lord (as per your desire), I am afraid of the punishment of a great Day.'

39:14 Say : 'Allah Alone I pray, and Him Alone I serve.

39:15 (As for yourselves, I have conveyed to you the Truth and if you do not believe, then) 'worship what you want besides Him.' Say : 'The real losers are those who will lose themselves as well their families on the Day of Resurrection. That will indeed be a great Loss.'

39:16 They will have layers of fire above and below them. That is what Allah warns His servants with.  So fear Me, O My servants!

39:17 Those who avoid false deities by not worshiping them and turn to Allah in repentance, there are glad tidings for them. So announce (O' Prophet  ﷺ) the good news to My servants,

39:18 those who heed the advice, and implement its best features are the ones whom Allah has guided!  Such are the sensible ones.'

39:19 The one who deserves the sentence of the (eternal) punishment (cannot be helped). Can you rescue the one who is (slated to be) in the fire?

39:20 As for those who truly fear their Lord, they shall be provided lofty (residential) mansions, built with one story upon another, beneath which the rivers flow; this is the promise of Allah; Allah does not fail in His promise.

39:21 Do you not see that Allah sends down rain from the sky, channeling it through streams on the earth, then produces with it crops of various colors, then they wither and you see them turn yellow, and then He makes them dry and broken pieces.   Surely, in this, there is a reminder for people of understanding.

39:22 Is the one whose heart Allah has opened to Islam and is walking in the light from his Lord,   similar to the one who has learned no lesson and is still a non-Muslim. So woe to those whose hearts are hardened against the remembrance of Allah!  They are clearly in error.

39:23 Allah has revealed the most beautiful message, a Book (the Quran) consistent in its verses yet repeating its teachings in different ways. Those who fear their Lord are filled with awe when they hear it, their skins and their hearts become pliant to the remembrance of Allah.  Such is the guidance of Allah.  He guides with it,  whom He pleases. And one whom Allah leaves astray,  for him there is no guide.

39:24 Is the one who will confront with the awful punishment on the Day of Resurrection,  (same as one who enters  into Paradise blissfully.)? It will be said to the wrongdoers, 'Taste what you earned!'

39:25 Those before them (also) rejected (the truth), then the torment came upon them from where they least expected.

39:26 Allah  made them taste disgrace in this worldly life, but the punishment of the Hereafter is greater, if they only knew.

39:27 Certainly we have drawn for mankind, in this Quran, all kinds of examples, so that they may reflect and be mindful.

39:28 (It is) the Quran (revealed) in Arabic without any distortions, so that they (the people) will fear Allah (and do good deeds).

39:29 Allah cites you a parable.   There is a slave man who is shared by many masters, each pulling this man to himself (is like  the man who worships other deities along with Allah), and there is another slave man who belongs entirely to one master (like the man who worships Allah Alone);  are the two alike in comparison? Praise be to Allah! But most of them do not know

39:30 Surely  you shall die and they (unbelievers) too shall  die.

Salafis, Deobandis, Kharaijis and their like minded groups impose this verse on Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) to mean that there is no difference between the death of Prophet Mohammad ( صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم ) and the death of a Pagan Mushrik; in the sense that both cannot see or hear after their death. They cite the following Hadith as a proof of their claim.

It is in Hadith - Narrated Ummul Momineen Aisha (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا): Allah's Apostle ( صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) died while Abu Bakr (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) was at a place called As-Sunah (Al-'Aliya) 'Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) stood up and said, "By Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ)! Allah's Apostle ( صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) is not dead!" 'Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) (later on) said, "By Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ)! Nothing occurred to my mind except that." He said, "Verily! Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) will resurrect him and he will cut the hands and legs of some men." Then Abu Bakr (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) came and uncovered the face of Allah's Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), kissed him and said, "Let my mother and father be sacrificed for you, (O Allah's Apostle ﷺ), you are good in life and in death. By Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) in Whose Hands my life is, Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) will never make you taste death twice." Then he went out and said, "O oath-taker! Don't be hasty." When Abu Bakr (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) spoke, 'Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) sat down. Abu Bakr (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) praised and glorified Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) and said, No doubt! Whoever worshiped Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), then Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) is dead, but whoever worshiped Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ), then Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) is Alive and shall never die." Then he recited إِنَّكَ مَيِّتٌ وَإِنَّهُم مَّيِّتُونَ [ Surely you shall die and they too shall (surely) die.] (Az-Zumur - 30). (Bukhari Vol 5, Bk 57, # 19)

Needless to say that the above claim on their part is Kufr, a blatant and unpardonable Kufr. No person who has some common sense, can equate Allah's Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) with a Pagan Mushrik, both in this life, or in death or in Hereafter. (La Haula wala quwwata illa billah).

To understand the meaning of the above verse, let us read a verse before this verse. We have provided below both these verses below.

It is in Quran - ضَرَبَ اللَّهُ مَثَلًا رَّجُلًا فِيهِ شُرَكَاءُ مُتَشَاكِسُونَ وَرَجُلًا سَلَمًا لِّرَجُلٍ هَلْ يَسْتَوِيَانِ مَثَلًا ۚ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ ۚ بَلْ أَكْثَرُهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ - إِنَّكَ مَيِّتٌ وَإِنَّهُم مَّيِّتُونَ [ Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) puts forth a similitude : a (slave) man belonging to many partners (like those who worship others along with Allah) disputing with one another, and a (slave) man belonging entirely to one master (like those who worship Allah alone). Are those two equal in comparison? All praises and thanks be to Allah! But most of them know not. Surely you shall die and they too shall (surely) die.] (Az-Zumur - 29-30)

Verse 29 establishes that the people who worship Idols are not the same as those who worship Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ). Surely, the treatment, rewards and active life of Muslims after their deaths will be different from the punishment of dead Mushrikeen. There are many Quranic verses and Ahadith which testify that Prophets, Sahabah, Awliya Allah are alive, they can see, listen and pray for us. This is Allah's (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) beneficence and reward for them.

Verse No. 30 describes - O' Prophet ( صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم ), you will die and these Mushrikeen will also die' - but since you are not like one of them, therefore, your state, after death, will be exalted, totally different from their state. Your rewards and responsibilities, after death, are different from the punishment and torment of dead Mushrikeen.

[As for those who (do not have faith, and) indulge in (evil) sinful acts, do they think that We place them - both in their life and their death - on equal footing with those who have attained faith and do righteous deeds? Bad indeed is their judgment. ] (Al-Jaathiya - 21)

(ii) It is in Quran - - لَا يَسْتَوِي أَصْحَابُ النَّارِ وَأَصْحَابُ الْجَنَّةِ ۚ أَصْحَابُ الْجَنَّةِ هُمُ الْفَائِزُونَ [ The inmates of Hell and inmates of Paradise are not in the same position. Only the inmates of Paradise are felicitated.] (Al-Hashr - 20)

(iii) It is in Quran - أُولَـٰئِكَ هُمُ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ حَقًّا ۚ لَّهُمْ دَرَجَاتٌ عِندَ رَبِّهِمْ وَمَغْفِرَةٌ وَرِزْقٌ كَرِيمٌ [ Those are they who are truthful believers. For them are Grades (of honor) with their Lord, and pardon, and a bountiful provision. (Al-Anfal - 4)]

(iv) It is in Quran - - وَلَوْ تَرَىٰ إِذْ يَتَوَفَّى الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا ۙ الْمَلَائِكَةُ يَضْرِبُونَ وُجُوهَهُمْ وَأَدْبَارَهُمْ وَذُوقُوا عَذَابَ الْحَرِيقِ [ If you could see how the angels receive those who disbelieve, smiting faces and their backs and (saying) : Taste the punishment of burning! (Al-Anfal - 50)]

39:31 Then on the Day of Resurrection, your disputes shall be settled in the presence of your Lord.
