Juz 17 -

Al-Anbiyaa

Al-Anbiyaa | Sura # 21 | 112 verses | Makkan

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful

21:1 People's accountability has drawn near, but they turn away without paying any attention.

21:2 Whenever a new Revelation comes to them from their Lord to warn and enlighten them, they listen to it in a playful manner.

21:3 With their hearts distracted, the evildoers converse (to each other) secretly :  'Is this (one) not human like yourselves? Would you fall for this magic, even though you can (clearly) see it?'

What is the magic they are talking about? It was Prophet's (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) gentle way of explaining Quran to people. Whoever listened to Quran from his mouth and whoever had a chance to meet him, used to get attracted to him and realize the authenticity of the message. The lucky ones would accept Islam instantaneously, and the unlucky ones used to get speechless before him. Though the facts were evident to them, still their arrogance would stop them from accepting the truth. They used to think that this is some kind of a magic with which people are getting attracted towards the Prophet With this in view, they used to do a lot of propaganda against the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) to stop people from meeting him, claiming that he has magical powers.

21:4 (The Prophet ﷺ) said, My Lord knows every word spoken in the heavens and on the earth. He is All Hearing, All Knowing.

The Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) did not ask them to stop the propaganda against him. He simply told them that the Lord of the World listens to every word spoken by them and they will be subjected to retribution of their deeds.

21:5 Yet they say : 'These are only confused dreams,' or rather : 'He has invented them;'  or : 'He is only a poet.  Let him therefore bring a miracle to us as the earlier (Apostles) were sent with.'

21:6 No town that We destroyed before them believed. Will these then have faith (if they are sent a sign/miracle)?

The above verse is the answer to the wrongful claim of Makkan pagans about a miracle. When miracles occurred before on the request of nations of earlier prophets, they still did not accept the faith and as a consequence they were destroyed. It was in the interest of Makkan Mushrikeen that nothing of that sort happens otherwise they will also be destroyed like earlier nations.

Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) provided a respite to the population of Makka for a while. Only their elite who were deadly opposed to the message of Islam were punished in the battle of Badr. But, the entire population of Makka became Muslim in 8 AH after the fall of Makka.

21:7 The Apostles We sent before you, (O Apostle Mohammad ﷺ), were also human beings to whom We sent revelation. If you, (O' Polytheists), do not know this, then ask the people who have knowledge (of the earlier Scriptures).

21:8 And We did not make the bodies (of the prophets) not needing food, nor were they made to live for ever.

21:9 Then We fulfilled Our promise with them : We saved them (the Prophets) and those whom We pleased (the followers of the Prophets), and destroyed the transgressors.

21:10 Now, (O' People), We have sent down to you a Book (the Quran) which deals with matters concerning yourselves; why don’t you understand?

21:11 And how many communities of unjust people have We destroyed, raising up other people in their place?

21:12 When they felt that Our punishment was coming, they took to their heels and fled.

21:13 (They were told) Do not run away! Return to your luxuries and your homes, so you may be questioned.

21:14 They said :  'Woe to us! We were indeed wrong-doers!'

21:15 And they kept repeating their cries until We made them as a field that is mown, as ashes, silent and extinguished.

21:16 And We did not create the heaven and earth and whatever between them as futile.

21:17 Had We desired to take up some diversion, We would have surely taken it up,  if were We to do (so).

21:18 No, but We hurl the truth against falsehood, and it breaks the latter’s head, and see, it vanishes. So woe to you (O' disbelievers) for all the falsehood you attribute to Allah.

21:19 Everyone who are in the heavens and the earth, and those in His presence do not consider themselves great for worshiping Him and do not get tired of their worship.

21:20 They glorify Him by night and day without intermission.

21:21 What!  Have these polytheists adopted Idols, made up of earth, whom they consider (as gods) and spread (this falsehood) among people?

21:22 If there were, in the heavens and the earth, other gods besides Allah, there would have been confusion in both!  Glory be to Allah, the Lord of the Throne : (High is He) above what they attribute to Him!

21:23 He cannot be questioned for His (wise) acts (that are beyond their comprehension), but they will be questioned (for their rebellious acts).

21:24 Or have they taken other gods besides Him? Say, (O Prophet ﷺ) 'Show (me) your proof. Here is (the Quran), the Reminder for those with me along with (earlier Scriptures), the Reminder for those before me.' But most of them do not know the truth, so they turn away.

21:25 We never sent any Apostle before you (O' Apostle ﷺ) except that We revealed to him that there is no god but Me, so worship Me alone.

21:26 They say, '(the) Most Compassionate (Lord)  has a son.' Glory be to Him!  No, ( those they claim to be his sons) are (actually) His honored servants!

The Jews and Christians claim that Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) has son. Some polytheists claim that the angels are the daughters of Almighty. The above verse refutes their evil claims.

It is in Quran - وَقَالَتِ الْيَهُودُ عُزَيْرٌ ابْنُ اللَّهِ وَقَالَتِ النَّصَارَى الْمَسِيحُ ابْنُ اللَّهِ ۖ ذَ‌ٰلِكَ قَوْلُهُم بِأَفْوَاهِهِمْ ۖ يُضَاهِئُونَ قَوْلَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا مِن قَبْلُ ۚ قَاتَلَهُمُ اللَّهُ ۚ أَنَّىٰ يُؤْفَكُونَ [ The Jews call 'Uzair (عليه السلام) a son of Allah, and the Christians call Isa (عليه السلام) the son of Allah. That is a saying from their mouth; (in this) they but imitate what the unbelievers of old used to say. Allah's curse be on them: how they are deluded away from the Truth! ] (At-Taubah - 30)

[Indeed those who say : 'Allah is the third of the Trinity' became unbelievers. There is but One God. If they do not desist in what they say, a painful punishment will afflict those of them that disbelieve. ] (Al-Ma'ida - 73)

21:27 They (the Prophets) speak only what He has spoken to them and what they are allowed to speak, and they act as per His command.

21:28 He knows what is ahead of them and what is behind them. They do not intercede except for whom He approves, and they tremble in awe of Him.

21:29 If any of them were to say : 'I am also a god besides Him,' We would send him to Hell, thus shall We reward the wrongdoers.'

21:30 Don't the Unbelievers see that the heavens and the earth were joined together (as one unit of creation), before we clove them asunder? We made from water every living thing.  Will they not then believe?

What is that one unit from which the entire Cosmos was created?

The one unit referred to in the above verse is Noor-e-Mohammadi It is established from Quran and Ahadith that Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) created the Noor of Prophet Mohammad ( صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) first, which is the abstract form of this cosmos, and from this 'Noor' He created this entire cosmos.

(i) It is in Hadith - It is related that Jābir Ibn Abdullah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said to Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), 'O Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) may my father and mother be sacrificed for you, tell me the first thing Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) created before all things.' The Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said : O' Jabir (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ), the first thing Allah ( عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) created was the light of your Prophet ( صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) from His light. (And everything else was created from that light). (Part of the Hadith).

The above Hadith was narrated by Abdur Razzaq (d. 211 AH) in his Musannaf according to Qastallani in al-Mawahib al-Laduniyya (1:55) and Zarqani in his Sharh al-Mawahib (1:56 of the Matba`a al-Amira edition, Cairo).

There cannot be any doubt as to the reliability of Abdur Razzaq as a narrator. Bukhari took 120 narrations from him while Muslim took 400

Biahaqi also narrated the above Hadith with a different wording in "Dala'il an-Nubuwwa, according to Zurqani in his Sharh al-Mawahib (1:56 of the Matba'a al-amira, Cairo). Also Diyarbakri narrated it in 'Tarikh al-Khamis (1-20).

The authenticity of the above Hadith is also proved from the following Quranic verses and Ahadith.

(ii) It is in Quran - قَدْ جَاءَكُم مِّنَ اللَّهِ نُورٌ وَكِتَابٌ مُّبِينٌ (From Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) has come to you a Light and a Book manifest.) (Al-Maeda - 15).

The above verse is very clear in describing Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) as 'Noor from Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ).

In the exegesis (Tafseer) of the above verse, many well known Ulema have confirmed that the 'light' refers to Prophet Mohammad

(iii) It is in Quran - فَآمِنُوا بِاللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ وَالنُّورِ الَّذِي أَنزَلْنَا ۚ وَاللَّهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ خَبِيرٌ (Believe, therefore, in Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) and His Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) and in the Light which we have sent down. And Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) is well acquainted with all that you do.) (At-Taghabun - 8).

Some people translate 'noor' in the verse as Quran. If we translate it this way, it will contradict the verse mentioned at # (ii) above. Thus the meaning of the above verse is Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) commands human beings to believe in Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ), His Apostle Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) and the light ( نُورٍ ) of Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) which has come down upon humanity in the shape of Hidaya through Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) via Quran-e-Mubeen and Seeratun Nabi (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم).

The similitude of His light is as a niche wherein is a lamp. The lamp is in a glass. The glass is as it were a shining star. (This lamp is) kindled from a blessed tree, an olive neither of the East nor of the West, whose oil would almost glow forth (of itself) though no fire touched it. Light upon Light (نُّورٌ عَلَىٰ نُورٍ ). . Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) guides to His light whom He will. And Allah ( عَزَّ وَجَلَّ ) speaks to mankind in allegories, for Allah ( عَزَّ وَجَلَّ ) knows all things.] (An-Nur - 35).

Suyūtī said in al-Riyād al-Aniqa : Ibn Jubair (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) and K'ab al-Āhbar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said, 'What is meant by the second light [in Light upon Light (نُّورٌ عَلَىٰ نُورٍ )] is Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) (as it is also described in verse 46, Sura al-Ahzab) because he is the Apostle and the Expositor and the Conveyor from Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) of what is enlightening and manifest.

( v) It is in Quran – يَا أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ إِنَّا أَرْسَلْنَاكَ شَاهِدًا وَمُبَشِّرًا وَنَذِيرًا - وَدَاعِيًا إِلَى اللَّهِ بِإِذْنِهِ وَسِرَاجًا مُّنِيرًا [ O’ Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم)! Truly, We have sent you as a Witness, a Bearer of Glad Tidings and Warner (for the entire Cosmos); and as one who invites to Allah's - عَزَّ وَجَلَّ (Grace) by His consent, and as a lamp spreading light (into the whole cosmos).] (Al - Ahzab 45-46).

The above verse describes Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) as 'Lamp spreading light (into the whole cosmos). He is also referred as a Witness, a bearer of glad tidings and warner to humanity. A witness is the one who knows about all the physical and spiritual aspects of this cosmos.

(vi) It is in Hadith - Narrated by Abu Hurayrah When Allah's Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) was asked since how long he is the Prophet, he replied, ‘When Adam (علیھ السلا م ) had not yet had his spirit joined to his body (Tirmidhi).

It is very difficult for Salafis, Deobandis, Kharijis and their like minded groups to understand these facts because they focus their attention on the physical body of Prophet Mohammad ( صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) and deny the facts of this cosmos which are clearly described in Quran and Ahadith. In view of their too much attention on one aspect, they lose sight of the important aspect of Prophet Mohammad ( صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) and start equating him with general human beings. Christians did the same mistake. They focused too much attention on the Spiritual aspect of Prophet Isa ( علیھ السلا م) and started regarding him as 'Son of God'. Quran and Ahadith teach us to balance both these aspects and remain stead fast on the right path of Islam.

It is very unfortunate for Kharijis, Salafis, Deobandis and their like minded groups who consider Prophet Mohammad ( صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) as a normal (sinful) human being as anyone else. The problem is that things which are visible to the normal physical eyes are also ignored by them. They do not pay attention to the fact that there is a commonality which is common in two things, but it is the distinction which is the deciding factor of excellence.

They should know that between human being and animals there are many commonalities. The animals are living beings, they eat and they reproduce their species. These are commonalities between animals and human beings. But the distinction between the two is that the human beings are crowned with common sense, intelligence, therefore, they are made masters of the world.

They should know that there are many commonalities between believers and non-believers as well. The distinction between the two is the Islamic faith. Because of this distinction, one will go the Paradise and the other will burn in Hell fire permanently.

Makkan apostates like Abu Jahel and others used to say, what is the difference between him (Prophet Mohammad – صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) and other people of Makkah, as he lives a life of a normal human being.

It is in Quran - وَقَالُوا مَالِ هَـٰذَا الرَّسُولِ يَأْكُلُ الطَّعَامَ وَيَمْشِي فِي الْأَسْوَاقِ ۙ [ (the apostates of Makka used to say) ‘What is there in this Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) and other people of Makkah, (as he lives a life of a normal human being), he eats food like us and goes to around the markets like us’. (Al-Furqan – 7).

But Sahabah never used to think on these lines and they never compared Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) with normal human beings. They looked at Prophet Mohammad’s (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) life as an absolute miracle of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ). To them Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) has been an unusual phenomenon of Allah’s (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) omnipotence.

It is in Hadith - Miswar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) narrate the account of the treaty of Al-Hudaibiya in which Urwa came to Prophet (صلی اللہ علیھ وآلھ وسلم) to negotiate its terms and when returned to his people and said, 'O people! By Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) I have been to the kings and to Caesar, Khosrau and An-Najashi, yet I have never seen any of them respected by his courtiers as much as (Prophet) Mohammad (صلی اللہ علیھ وآلھ وسلم) is respected by his companions. By Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ), if he spat, the spittle would fall in the hand of one of them (Sahaba) who would rub it on his face and skin; if he ordered them, they would carry out his order immediately; if he performed ablution, they would struggle to take the remaining water; and when they spoke, they would lower their voices and would not look at his face constantly out of respect.' (Bukhari - Book 50, No. 891; Ahmad; Tabarani, Ibn-e-Habban, Bahaqi)

Prophet Mohammad's (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) life is a perpetual miracle. How come an apparently unlettered human being could change the course of this world? How could he culminates the teachings of all Prophets and becomes a stamp on the Divine Law? Whatever he says, whatever he does is Divine Law.

Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) represents humanity in all his actions. He shows happiness on certain things and displeasure on certain things. He shows fore knowledge of certain things and shows his unawareness of certain things. He pleads with Almighty for His forgiveness. He walks in streets like normal human beings. He fights with infidels along with his companions and sometimes the results of the battles are inconclusive and sometimes he wins. He becomes concerned when something goes wrong with his family members and his companions and shares happiness with them on happy occasions.

Why it is so? Did you ever think about that?

Read this Quranic verse to understand this phenomenon.

It is in Quran - لَّقَدْ كَانَ لَكُمْ فِي رَسُولِ اللَّهِ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ [ Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) is an exemplary model (for all of you)] (Al-Ahzab – 21).

He is an icon of humanity and of all creations. Since he is the root of all creations, therefore, whatever form Allah (سبحانہ و تعا لی) chose for him to manifest, he will show that form’s perfection. In other words, he is a perfect human being. Like him there is none. He represents various facets of humanity at various stages of his life. Sometimes, he shows utmost humility of a desperate human being and on other occasions, pointing his finger towards the moon splits it into two, which was witnessed by all Quraish. This miracle is mentioned in the Holy Quran as well.

It is in Quran - اقْتَرَبَتِ السَّاعَةُ وَانشَقَّ الْقَمَرُ - وَإِن يَرَوْا آيَةً يُعْرِضُوا وَيَقُولُوا سِحْرٌ مُّسْتَمِرٌّ [ The Hour (the Day of Resurrection) came near and the moon was split. And if they see any sign, then turn their faces and say this is magic perpetual]. (Al-Qamar -1-2).

It is in Hadith - Bukhari wo Muslim, narrated by Ibne Omer wo Abu Huraira Wo Anas Prophet Mohammad - صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم told his companions) 'I am not like you. I live with my Sustainer (Rabbul Aalameen) who feeds and provides me with drink.'

21:31 And We have placed firm mountains in the earth so that it does not shake with them (people), and made in it broad pathways so they (the people) may find their way.

21:32 And We made the sky a protected roof, still they (the disbelievers) turn away from His signs.

21:33 It is He Who created the Night and the Day, and the sun and the moon;  all (the celestial bodies) swim along in their assigned orbits.

21:34 And before you (O' Prophet ﷺ), We did not appoint on earth a never-ending life for any human being; will they, if you depart, become immortal?

21:35 Everyone is bound to taste death, and We try you (O' People) through the bad and the good things (of life) by way of testing (so that your real character may reveal itself).  In fact, you are on the way to return to Us, (and will be gathered on the day of resurrection.)

21:36 When those who persistently disbelieve, see you, they make you but a target of mockery, (saying to one another), 'Is this the one who speaks against your gods?' (They cannot bear to hear their false deities denied.) And yet it is they themselves who deny the Book of (their Lord) Most Compassionate (Who has created them,  without realizing that it is a crime to do so.)

21:37 Humans are, by nature, impatient as if made of haste, (this is why the disbelievers ask derisively, when the punishment, with which they are threatened, will come).   I will soon show you My Signs (the truth of My threats), so do not ask Me to hasten it.

21:38 They ask (the believers jokingly), 'When will this threat come to pass if what you say is true?'

21:39 If only the disbelievers knew (the time) when they will not be able to ward off the fire from their faces, and from their backs, and (when) no help can reach them!

21:40  But it will come upon them all of a sudden and dumbfound them. They will not be able to avert it, nor will they be given any respite to escape from it.

21:41  And indeed the Apostles before you (O' Apostle Mohammed ﷺ) were mocked at, but the mockery for the torment they used to make, came (all of a sudden) and ruined them.

21:42  Say, 'Who (else) can protect you by night or day (other than your) Most Compassionate Lord?' Yet they turn away when their Lord is mentioned (in front of them).

21:43  Do they have gods who can defend them against Us? Their gods can neither help themselves nor can they protect themselves against Us.

21:44  The truth is that We have provided for these (polytheist of Makka) and their forefathers the enjoyments of life. Thus  they have lived for a long time in ease and safety. (This is why they think that they will live forever in prosperity). Do they not perceive that We are gradually reducing the land (under their control) from all borders? (Do they consider that ) They are the ones who will prevail (for ever)?

21:45  Say : 'I warn you only on the strength of the Revelation (in which there is no doubt).  But the deaf do not hear the call when they are warned.'

21:46  Yet even if a whip from the Wrath of your Lord was to touch them, they will certainly say, 'Woe to us! No doubt we were wrongdoers.'

21:47  We will set up balances of absolute justice on the Day of Resurrection, and no person will be wronged in the least. Even though it be a deed so much as the weight of a grain of mustard seed, We will bring it forth to be weighed. We are sufficient to undertake  account (of everyone on that day).

21:48  We gave Musa and Haroon (عليهم السلام) the criterion (the Book distinguishing between truth and falsehood) and made it a (guiding) light and reminder for the righteous.

21:49 Those who fear their Lord (in their most secret thoughts) without seeing Him, and who hold the Hour (of Judgment) in awe (are the pious people).

21:50  And this (Quran) is a blessed reminder which We have revealed. Will you (O' disbelievers) then keep on denying it?

21:51  And indeed, We had granted Ibrahim (عليه السلام) sound judgment early on, for We knew him well (as he was our chosen Apostle).

21:52 When he questioned (the brother of ) his father and his people, 'What are these statues to which you are so devoted?'

It is reported that Hadhrat Ibrahim (عليه السلام) grew up under the guardianship of his uncle Azar (father's brother), because his father, Tareq died when he was very young.

It is in Hadith Anas Ibn Malik (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) narrates that one day Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) stood on the pulpit and informed (sahabah) the names of his ancestors.

The Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said : Ana, Mohammad Ibn Abdullah, bin Abdul Muttalib, bin Hashim, bin Abd Manaf, bin Qusa'i, bin Kilab, bin Murra, bin Ka'b, bin Lu'ayy, bin Ghalib, bin Fihr, bin Malik, bin an-Nadr, bin Kinanah, bin Khuzaimah, bin Mudrikah, bin Elias, bin Mudar, bin Nizar, bin Ma'ad, bin Adnan, bin Udad, bin Asha'b, bin Saleh, bin Salooq, bin Hameesa, bin Nabad, bin Khizaar, bin Ismail (عليه السلام), bin Ibrahim (عليه السلام), bin Tariq.

(Baihaqi, Hakim, Ahmed, Ibn Kathir in Bidaya wan Nihaya and Ibn Asakir).

It is clear from the above Hadith that the father of Ibrahim (عليه السلام) was Tariq, a Momin; while his uncle Azar was an Idol worshiper.

It is in Quran - رَبَّنَا اغْفِرْ لِي وَلِوَالِدَيَّ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَوْمَ يَقُومُ الْحِسَابُ [O our Lord! grant me protection and my parents and the believers on the day when the reckoning shall come to pass! ] (Ibrahim - 41).

In the above verse, Ibrahim (عليه السلام) is praying for protection for himself, his both parents (who were Momineen) and general believers on the Day of Judgment. This Quranic verse shows Azar, who was an Idol worshiper, was not the father of Ibrahim (عليه السلام).

21:53 They said, 'We found our fathers worshiping them.'

21:54 He said, 'Indeed you have been in manifest error; you and your fathers.'

21:55 They said, 'Have you brought us the Truth, or,  are you one of those who jest (make jokes)?'

21:56 He said, 'In fact, your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, the One Who created them; and I am of those who testify to it.'

21:57 'And by Allah, I have a plan for your idols after you go away and turn your backs,'

21:58 And then he broke all of them (the idols in their temple) to pieces except the one biggest in their sight, so that they might be able turn back to it (to ask what had happened)!

21:59 'Who has done all this to our gods?' they exclaimed. 'Indeed, he is one of the worst wrongdoers!'

21:60 Some said, 'We heard a young man, called Ibrahim (عليه السلام), speaking (ill) of them (idols).'

21:61 They said : 'Then bring him before the people, so that they may see him and bear witness against him!'

21:62 (When Ibrahim عليه السلام came, they said) Did you do this to our gods, O' Ibrahim (عليه السلام).'

21:63 He said, ‘Rather  the biggest (Idol) of them may have done it.  Ask them, if they can speak.’

Some people wrongly consider that Ibrahim (عليه السلام) lied to the Idol worshipers. This is not a correct understanding. As a matter of fact, it was a Mercy of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) on the idol worshipers. Their conscience was hit by this action. They were made to realize that the Idol worship they were doing was wrong.

It is in Quran - وَلَقَدْ آَتَيْنَا إِبْرَاهِيمَ رُشْدَهُ مِنْ قَبْلُ وَكُنَّا بِهِ عَالِمِينَ [ And indeed, We had granted Ibrahim (عليه السلام) sound judgment early on, for We knew him well (as he was our chosen Apostle). ] (Al-Anbiya - 51)

Prophets are innocent, Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) protects them from any kind of apparent or hidden wrongdoing. Therefore, among their actions and sayings if something looks not based on facts to the general people, it is actually a wisdom on their part for the greater good of humanity.

Prophets do not act on their own, whatever they do or say is the revelation that comes to them from Allah.

It is in Quran - وَمَا يَنطِقُ عَنِ الْهَوَىٰ - إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا وَحْيٌ يُوحَىٰ [ The Prophet ﷺ does not speak out of desire. It is the revelation that is coming to him.]

It is in Hadith - Qatadah reported : I said, 'Ummul Momineen, tell me about the character of the Apostle of Allah, Ummul Momineen Aisha (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) said, 'Have you not read the Quran?' I said, 'Of course!' Ummul Momineen Aisha (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) said, 'Verily, the character of the Prophet of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) was the Quran.' (Muslim).

A Hadith is mentioned in some books of Ahadith that Ibrahim (عليه السلام) told 3 lies during his lifetime.

It is in Hadith Abu Huraira (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) narrated that Ibrahim (عليه السلام) did not tell a lie except on three occasion. Twice for the Sake of Allah when he said, 'I am sick,' and he said, '(I have not done this but) the big idol has done it.' The (third was) that while Ibrahim (عليه السلام) and (his wife) Sarah (عليها السلام) were going (on a journey) they passed by (the territory of) a tyrant. Someone said to the tyrant, 'This man (Ibrahim عليه السلام ) is accompanied by a very charming lady.' So, he sent for Ibrahim (عليه السلام) and asked him about Sarah (عليها السلام) saying, 'Who is this lady?' Ibrahim (عليه السلام) said, 'She is my sister.' Ibrahim (عليه السلام) went to Sarah (عليها السلام) and said, 'O Sarah (عليها السلام)! there are no believers on the surface of the earth except you and I. This man asked me about you and I have told him that you are my sister, so don't contradict my statement.' The tyrant then called Sarah (عليها السلام) and when she went to him, he tried to take hold of her with his hand, but (his hand got stiff and) he was confounded. He asked Sarah (عليها السلام). 'Pray to Allah for me, and I shall not harm you.' So Sarah (عليها السلام) supplicated to Allah to cure him and he got cured. He tried to take hold of her for the second time, but his hand got more stiffer than before and was more confounded. He again requested Sarah (عليها السلام), 'Pray to Allah for me', and I will not harm you.' Sarah (عليها السلام) supplicated to Allah again and he became alright. He then called one of his guards (who had brought her) and said, 'You have not brought me a human being but have brought me a devil.' The tyrant then gave Hajira (عليها السلام) as a girl servant to Sarah (عليها السلام). Sarah (عليها السلام) came back (to Ibrahim عليه السلام ) while he was praying. Ibrahim (عليه السلام), gesturing with his hand, asked, 'What has happened?' She replied, 'Allah has spoiled the evil plot of the infidel and gave me Hajira (عليها السلام) for service.' (Abu Huraira رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) then addressed his listeners saying, 'That (Hajira عليها السلام) was your mother, O' Bani Ma-is-Sama (بَنِي مَاءِ السَّمَاءِ‏) (the Arabs, the descendants of Ismail (عليه السلام), the son of Hajira (عليها السلام). (Bukhari, Muslim and others)

It is important to read the following Hadith, to understand this issue in its proper perspective.

It is in Hadith Imam Razi reported a Hadith from Imam Abu Hanifa (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) in his Tafseer al-Kabir. Someone mentioned before Imam Abu Hanifa (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) that it is in Hadith that Ibrahim (عليه السلام) said 3 lies. The Imam said, no. The narrator of the Hadith has told one lie.

(This Hadith is also mentioned by Shaikh Mohammad Abdul Qadeer Siddiqui (رحمتہ اللہ علیہ) in his Tafseer-e-Siddiqui, verse 63, Surah Al-Anbiya.)

In view of the observation of Imam-e-Azam Abu Hanifah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ), the Hadith that Ibrahim (عليه السلام) said 3 lies is clouded in uncertainty.

Let us discuss briefly the three statements mentioned in the Hadith.

(i) The first statement of Ibrahim (عليه السلام) to his idol worshiping people was, when they were going out of their town for some festival. He told them that he was not feeling well and he stayed back.

It is in Quran - فَقَالَ إِنِّي سَقِيمٌ [ And (Ibrahim عليه السلام) said, 'Indeed, I am ill.' ] (As-Saaffaat - 89)

Why did he stay back? It was because he wanted to explain the wrongdoing of his people in a way they can comprehend fully. And, when all of them had gone to the festival, he entered the big temple and broke all idols leaving the biggest idol intact.

(ii) The second occasion was, when they came back and asked him as to who has broken the idols? His reply is described in (Verse 63, Al-Anbiya). 'He told them 'the biggest (Idol) may have done it. Ask them, if they can speak.'

It is obvious that on both these occasions it was the Mercy of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) on the people of Ibrahim (عليه السلام) to explain them facts in this manner.

(iii) The third statement is not mentioned in the Quran. It is mentioned in the Bible that Ibrahim (عليه السلام) lied and declared his wife to be his sister (Genesis 12 : 12, 13, 18, 19). As per the Bible, this incident took place when Ibrahim (عليه السلام) went to Egypt. And according to Bible, the age of Ibrahim (عليه السلام) at that time was 75, and Sarah (عليها السلام) was 65 years old. In such a scenario, it cannot be that someone informed a tyrant that a youthful charming woman is accompanied by Ibrahim (عليه السلام) and the tyrant calling them to his palace and Ibrahim (عليه السلام) stating them that Sara (عليها السلام) was his sister, and that Sara (عليها السلام) getting Hajira (عليها السلام) as her maid servant from that tyrant, all these are conflicting and contradictory stories.

21:64 So they came back to their senses, saying  (to one another, it is not Ibrahim  عليه السلام), 'You yourselves are truly the wrongdoers!'

21:65 Then they (quickly) regressed to their (original) mind-set, (and said to Ibrahim عليه السلام), 'You already know that those (idols) cannot speak.

21:66 (Ibrahim  عليه السلام) said, 'Do you then worship, besides Allah, things that can neither be of any good to you,  nor can they harm?

21:67 'Shame on you, and shame on what you worship instead of Allah. Will you not use reason?'

21:68 They (got mad in anger and) said, 'Burn him up to avenge your gods, if you must act.'

21:69 (When they threw him in fire) We commanded, O' fire, be cool and peaceful for Ibrahim (عليه السلام).

21:70 And they intended to harm him, but We made them suffer the greatest loss.

21:71 And We saved him and (his nephew) Loot (عليهم السلام) (and directed them) to the land which We have blessed for the nations.

21:72 And We blessed him with (son) Ishaq (عليه السلام) and (grandson) Yaqoob (عليه السلام), as an additional favor, making all of them righteous.

21:73 And We made them leaders, guiding people by Our command, and We revealed to them to do good deeds, and to establish Salah, and pay Zakat.  They were Our servants devoted to worshiping Us with all sincerity.

21:74 And to Loot (عليه السلام) We gave wisdom and knowledge, and saved him from the society engrossed in shameful practices. They were certainly an evil, rebellious people.

21:75 And We admitted him into Our Mercy, for he was one of the Righteous.

21:76 And (also remember) Nooh (عليه السلام). He had called out to Us long before (Ibrahim  عليه السلام), and We answered his prayer and saved him and (those of) his family and people (who believed in him) from the tremendous distress.

21:77 And We helped him against the people who denied Our signs. They were indeed an evil lot;  so We drowned them all.

21:78 And remember Dawood and Sulaiman (عليهم السلام), when they gave judgment in the matter of the field into which the sheep of certain people had strayed at night. We did witness their judgment.

The above verse is related to an incident during the time of Dawood (عليه السلام). It so happened that the sheep of a person entered the garden of grapes of another person during the night when the grapes were fully grown and were about to be harvested and caused severe damage to the crop.

It is in Hadith - It is narrated on the authority of Ibn Masud (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) who said that the Grapes which had grown and their bunches were spoiled by the sheep. Dawud (عليه السلام) ruled that the owner of the grapes should keep the sheep. Sulaiman (عليه السلام) said, 'Not like this, O Prophet of Allah!'. Dawood (عليه السلام) said, 'How then'? Sulaiman (عليه السلام) said : 'Give the (garden of the) grapes to the owner of the sheep and let him tend them until the grapes grow back as they were, and give the sheep to the owner of the grapes (garden) and let him benefit from them until the grapes have grown back as they were. Then the grapes should be given back to their owner, and the sheep should be given back to their owner.' (Ibn Jarir)

There is another incident in which Dawood and Sulaiman (عليهم السلام) gave different judgments. It is mentioned in the following Hadith.

It is in Hadith - It is narrated on the authority of Abu Huraira (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) that the Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said, 'There were two women who each had a son. The wolf came and took one of the children. They both claimed that the remaining child belonged to them. Their dispute was referred to Dawood (عليه السلام). He ruled that the (remaining) child belonged to the older woman. They left. Then Sulaiman (عليه السلام) called them back and said, 'Give me a sword and I will divide him (the child) between the two of you.'' The younger woman said, 'May Allah have mercy on you! He is her child, do not cut him up!'' So he ruled that the child belonged to the younger woman). (Bukhari, Muslim, Nasai, Ahmad)

21:79 We made Sulaiman (عليه السلام) understand the case more clearly. We granted each of them sound, wise judgment and knowledge (pertaining to the mission and in accordance with the time and conditions of each). And We subdued the mountains, as well as birds, to glorify Us along with Dawood (عليه السلام). It is We Who do all these things.

The above verse refers to the beauty of the voice of Dawood (عليه السلام). When he recited Zabur, the birds would stop and hover in the air, and would repeat after him, and the mountains would respond and echo his words.

It is in Hadith – It is narrated by Abu Musa (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said, O’Musa (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ), you have been given a flute of the People of Dawood ( عليه السلام ). (Tirmidhi).

It is in Quran - وَلَقَدْ آتَيْنَا دَاوُودَ مِنَّا فَضْلًا ۖ يَا جِبَالُ أَوِّبِي مَعَهُ وَالطَّيْرَ ۖ وَأَلَنَّا لَهُ الْحَدِيدَ - أَنِ اعْمَلْ سَابِغَاتٍ وَقَدِّرْ فِي السَّرْدِ ۖ وَاعْمَلُوا صَالِحًا ۖ إِنِّي بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ بَصِيرٌ [ And We certainly gave Dawood (عليه السلام) from Us bounty. (We said), 'O mountains, repeat (Our) praises with him, and the birds (as well).' And We made iron soft for him, (and commanded), 'Make full coats of mail (jackets composed of metal rings serving as armor) and calculate (precisely) the links, and work (all of you with) righteousness. Indeed I am seeing what you (all) do.' ] (Saba - 10-11)

21:80 We taught him the art of making body armor to protect you in battle. Will you then be grateful?

Dawood (عليه السلام) was the first one to make rings of chain-armor. Before this new armor, they used to wear plated armor.

21:81 And to Sulaiman (عليه السلام) We subjected the wind, blowing at his command toward the land that We had blessed. It is We who have knowledge of everything.

It is reported that Sulaiman (عليه السلام) had a massive mat made of wood on which he would place all the requirements of his kingship and command the wind to carry it. The wind then would carry him aloft, shading him and protecting him from the heat, until he reached wherever he wanted to go in the land.

21:82 And (We subjected) some Shayateen (Headstrong jinns) that dived (in the oceans) for him (to bring pearls), and performed other duties. It is We Who kept them in check.

21:83 And remember Ayyub (عليه السلام), when he called his Lord saying, 'Hardship has afflicted me, and You are the Most Merciful of all those who have mercy.

21:84 So We listened to him : We removed the distress that was on him, and We restored his people to him, and doubled their number  as a Grace from Ourselves, and a thing for commemoration, for all who serve Us.

Prophet Ayyub (عليه السلام) was the descendant of Prophet Ishaq (عليه السلام). He lived in Syria. He was very humble and used to glorify Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) devotedly. Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) had provided him with many bounties, like big house, lands, farms, live stock, servants and many children.

Then Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) tested him. He was striped of all his wealth and possessions. But, it did not matter to Ayyub (عليه السلام) as he remained committed to the glorification of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ). Then Ayyub (عليه السلام) lost all his children, one by one. Then he lost his health as he was afflicted with a loathsome disease with terrible pain. The disease worsened day by day to an extent that people of his community abandoned him outside the town where no one visited him except his wife who remained with him through all these trials. She worked in the homes of people to make a living and to look after him who was abandoned alone. Even in this condition, Ayyub (عليه السلام) did not loose heart and remained steadfast in the glorification of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ).

Ayyub (عليه السلام) remained in this state for about 18 years. Then one day he prayed - وَأَيُّوبَ إِذْ نَادَى رَبَّهُ أَنِّي مَسَّنِيَ الضُّرُّ وَأَنْتَ أَرْحَمُ الرَّاحِمِينَ [ And remember Ayyub (عليه السلام), when he called his Lord saying, 'Hardship has afflicted me, and You are the Most Merciful of all those who have mercy. ] (Al-Anbiya - 83)

Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) responded to his supplication and removed all afflictions from him and he became as sound as he had been previously. His wife was not there at that time. When she returned to him, she did not recognize her husband standing in front of her hale and hearty. She asked him, 'May Allah bless you, have you seen the Prophet of Allah who was ill here? And by Allah, I have not seen a man, more similar to him when he was healthy, than you. Prophet Ayyub (عليه السلام) said 'it is me only'. Later Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) returned all his wealth, possessions and his children.

21:85 And (remember) Isma'il,  Idris, and Zul-kifl (عليهم السلام). They were all steadfast.

21:86 And We admitted them into Our mercy for they were truly righteous.

21:87 And (remember)  Dhu an-Nun (Yunus  عليه السلام ) when he went away enraged (at his people).   So he thought that We would not cause him any distress (during that journey). Then he cried out  in  the darkness (of the night, under the sea from the belly of the fish who had swallowed him) : ‘There is no God except You. Glory be to You! Surely, I was of those who wrong (themselves).'

21:88 We answered his prayer and rescued him from the anguish. And so do We save the (true) believers.

Prophet Yunus (عليه السلام) was sent to the people of a town in the present day Iraq. He called them towards Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ), but they rejected him and persisted in their disbelief for a long time. When he realized that they were adamant in rejecting the faith, he left the town in anger and told them that they will be destroyed within 3 days. Though his people rejected his teachings, they knew that he was honest. When he left the town, they saw dark clouds appeared over their heads. They got panicked and ran away from their homes to the desert with their children and cattle and flocks. They separated the mothers from their children, and pleaded to Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) for forgiveness. They were forgiven for their previous misdeeds as they repented and believed in what Yunus (عليه السلام) preached them.

It is in Quran - فَلَوْلَا كَانَتْ قَرْيَةٌ آمَنَتْ فَنَفَعَهَا إِيمَانُهَا إِلَّا قَوْمَ يُونُسَ لَمَّا آمَنُوا كَشَفْنَا عَنْهُمْ عَذَابَ الْخِزْيِ فِي الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا وَمَتَّعْنَاهُمْ إِلَىٰ حِينٍ [ Then has there not been a (single) city that believed so its faith benefited it except the people of Yunus (عليه السلام). When they believed, We removed from them the punishment of disgrace in worldly life and gave them enjoyment for a time. ] (Yunus - 98)

After leaving the town, Yunus (عليه السلام) traveled in a ship. During the journey, the ship was caught in a sea storm. The people in the ship got panicked and feared that they could be drowned. As it was the custom those days, they would cast lots to identify the person who was the cause of their misfortune. Whoever was identified, they would throw him into the sea for the ships safety. It so happened that when they cast the lot, the draw went against Yunus (عليه السلام).

It is in Quran - فَسَاهَمَ فَكَانَ مِنَ الْمُدْحَضِينَ [ And he (Yunus عليه السلام ) drew lots and was among the losers. ] (As-Safaat - 141)

Yunus (عليه السلام) stood up, removed his outer garments and threw himself into the sea in the darkness of the night. A large fish appeared on the scene and swallowed him and went deep into the sea. Yunus (عليه السلام) remained alive in the belly of the fish for about an hour or so and he prayed Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) seeking His mercy from the darkness of the belly of fish. His prayer was answered. The fish came back on the surface of water and spew him out on a beach which had thick vegetation. It took some days for Yunus (عليه السلام) on the beach to get fully healed as his skin was partially burnt. After he recovered, he went back to his town and realized that his nation had been forgiven and they had accepted the faith.

21:89 (Mention also) Zakariyya (عليه السلام). He called out to his Lord, saying : 'My Lord! Do not let me leave the world without a heir, for You are the Best of the inheritors.'

21:90 So We answered his prayer, and gave him Yahya (عليه السلام) and remedied (the infertility of) his wife for him. Indeed they were most active in  good deeds, and they would supplicate Us with eagerness and awe and were humble before Us.

21:91 And (mention Maryam -  عليها السلام) the one who guarded her chastity. We breathed into her from Our Spirit (Jibreel   عليه السلام), and made her and her son a sign for all people.

21:92   So, this community of yours (which all the Apostles and their followers have formed) is one single community of the same faith, and I am your Lord (Who creates, sustains, and protects you all); so worship Me alone.

21:93   And (yet), they later disagreed and became divided (in to different sects, but ) they are all destined to return to Us.

21:94   So whoever does righteous deeds while he is a believer, his effort will not be ignored, and We shall record it in his favor.

21:95   It is forbidden for (the people of) any town that We have destroyed (to return to the world).  They shall not return.

21:96   Until (after) Yajooj and Majooj are broken loose (from the barrier), swarming down from every hill,

21:97 And the time of fulfillment for the True Promise will draw near, then behold! The eyes of the unbelievers will fixedly stare in horror : (They will say) 'Woe to us! We were indeed heedless of this warning.  In fact we were wrongdoers.'

21:98 Verily you, (unbelievers), and the (false) gods that you worship besides Allah, are the fuel of Hell! You are (all) bound to enter it.

21:99 Had they really been gods they would not have entered it (the Hell).   They will all abide in it for ever.

21:100 There will only be groaning for them, and they will not hear any thing (else).

The above verses (95-100) emphasize the fact that if a person dies on disbelieve, there is no way that he can come back to this world again and do good deeds. Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) says that it is forbidden for him. He will be raised along with everyone else on the day of Resurrection to face the consequence of his deeds and eventually will be thrown into Hell fire.

21:101 Indeed those to whom there has gone beforehand (the promise of) the best reward from Us will be kept away from it (Hell).

21:102 They (believers) will not even hear the slightest sound of it (Hell), and they will abide in that which they desire, (the paradise).

21:103 The great Horror (of that Day) will not disturb them (the believers), and the angels will greet them, (saying), 'This is your Day, which you have been promised.'

The above verse is a good tiding for the believers. The horrors of the day of judgement will not be a cause of grieve for the believers. They will be kept safe from the effects of the horrors. Rather, the angels will greet them saying that 'today is the day when you will be rewarded as was promised to you during your lifetime'.

21:104 The day We shall roll up the skies, like the rolling of the scrolls for writings. We will bring it back as We began the first creation.  (Its) a promise (binding) on Us. It will indeed be fulfilled.

21:105 We have written in the Zaboor (Psalms) as We did in previous Scriptures, that My righteous worshipers shall inherit the earth.

21:106 Verily there is a message in this (Quran) for people who are devout.

21:107 We have not sent you (O' Prophet  ﷺ) but as Mercy on all the worlds.

Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) is the Mercy on all the worlds, the entire Cosmos. It is because of him that all worlds are being protected and provided with the required provisions.

21:108 Say, 'It is revealed to me that your god is but one God. Will you, then, become Muslims (those who submit to Him)?'

21:109 If they give no heed, tell them : 'I have warned you all alike in complete fairness; now I do not know whether what you are threatened with is near or far.

21:110 'It is He Who knows what you speak openly and what you hide (in your hearts').

21:111 'I do not know if this (delay in taking you to task) is a test for you or enjoyment for a while.'

21:112 The Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said (after a long debate with the unbelievers),  'O My Lord Pass your judgment so that the truth is manifested (to them).  And  Our Lord is most Compassionate, Whose help we seek against all that you falsely attribute (to Him)

The Hajj

Al-Hajj | Sura # 22 | 78 verses | Madinan

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful

22:1 O' People, fear your Lord. The great upheaval of the Hour will indeed be terrible.

22:2 On that Day you will see that every nursing mother will forget her nursing baby and every pregnant female will miscarry, and you will see people as if they are intoxicated, though they will not be drunk. Such will be the horror of Allah’s torment.

22:3 Yet there are some among people, who in their ignorance, argue about Allah and follow all rebellious devils.

22:4 It has been decreed for such devils that whoever takes them as a guide, will be misguided, and led by them into the torment of the Blaze.

22:5 O people! If you are in doubt about the Resurrection, then (know that) We did create you from dust, then from a sperm-drop, then (developed you into) a clinging clot, then a lump of flesh, fully formed or unformed, in order to demonstrate (Our power) to you. (Then) We settle whatever (embryo) We will in the womb for an appointed term, then bring you forth as infants, so that you may reach your prime.  Some of you  die (young), while others are left to reach the most feeble stage of life (old age) so that they may know nothing after having known much.   And (similarly) you see the earth lifeless, but as soon as We send down rain upon it, it begins to stir (to life) and swell, producing every type of pleasant plant.

22:6 This is so, because Allah is the Reality.  It is He Who gives life to the dead, and it is He Who has power over all things.

22:7 And indeed the Hour will come. There can not be any doubt about it, or about (the fact) that Allah will raise up all,  who are in the graves.

22:8 Yet, there are some who dispute about Allah without having any knowledge or guidance, or any enlightening Book.

22:9 Twisting things around in order to lead others astray from the Path of Allah, for such people there is disgrace in this life, and on the Day of Judgement we shall make them taste the punishment of burning fire.

22:10 That (punishment) is on account of what you had done in the past; yet Allah is not unjust to His creatures.

22:11 And among people there are those who worship Allah on the very edge (doubtfully).  If good befalls him, he is content with it (faith); but if a trial befalls on him, then he turns back on its face (becomes a disbeliever), thus loses both this world and the Hereafter. That is (indeed) a manifest loss.

22:12 Leaving Allah they pray to those who cannot harm or profit them. That is the limit of going astray.

22:13 He even invokes the being (the Devils) that is far more likely to cause harm than benefit. What evil a patron, and what evil an associate!

22:14 Indeed, Allah will admit those who believe and do good deeds into Gardens, under which rivers flow. Surely Allah does what He wills.

22:15 Whoever thinks that Allah will not help the Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) to victory in this world and  in Hereafter, (let him move heaven and earth to prevent His help.) Let him stretch out a rope to the sky (to prevent Allah's help and Revelation from reaching the Prophet ﷺ), and then sever that rope (to descend without being broken into pieces). Then let him see whether the schemes he makes will be of any use to him, and (whether he can) do away with what enrages him.

It is reported that Ibn Abbas, Mujahid, Ikrimah, Ata, Abu al-Jawza, Qatada (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہم) were of the opinion that the meaning of this verses is 'Whoever thinks that Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) will not help Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) in this world and the Hereafter, let him stretch out a rope to the ceiling in his house and let him strangle himself. What they meant was, 'let him go and kill himself if it annoys him so much, for Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) will most certainly help and support the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم).

22:16 Thus have We sent down the verses of Quran as manifest signs, and indeed Allah guides whomever He likes.

22:17 Those who believe (in the Qur'an), those who follow the Jewish (scriptures), and the Sabians, Christians, Magians, and Polytheists,  Allah will judge between them on the Day of Judgment: for Allah is witness of all things.

22:18 Do you not see that to Allah prostrates whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth and the sun, the moon, the stars, the mountains, the trees, the moving creatures and many of the people? But upon many the punishment has been justified. And he whom Allah humiliates, none can lift (him) to grace.  Indeed, Allah does what He wills.

The above is 'the verse of Sajda' (آیت سجدہ). If someone is reading it alone, should do prostration (سجدة) alone. If it is read loudly in an audience, the reciter and all the listeners should do 'Prostration of Recitation' (Sajda-e-Tilaawah - سجدة التلاوة) individually.

The Prostration can be done in sitting or standing position. In the Hanafi school of thought, 'Prostration of Recitation' (Sajda-e-Tilaawah - سجدة التلاوة) is obligatory (Fardh). With Shafii and Maliki, it is Sunnah.

It is in Hadith - 'When you have recited a verse requiring Sajdah-e-Tilaawaah, you should go down for Sajdah with Allahu-Akbar and rise from Sajdah with Allahu-Akbar, which may be performed sitting, though it is preferable to prostrate oneself from the standing position. (Abu Dawood)

Have the intention to do Prostration of recitation (سجدة التلاوة). The place where you are reading/reciting Quran should be clean. Turn your face towards Qibla, say (quietly) Allahu Akbar, go into prostration once, recite the 'Tasbih of Sajdah' 'Subhana Rabbi al-A'alaa' (سبحان ربّي الاعلى ) at least 3 times and raise from the Sajda saying Allahu Akbar.

22:19 These are two opposing groups (believers and non-believers) that dispute about their Lord. As for the disbelievers, garments of Fire will be cut out for them and boiling water will be poured over their heads,

22:20 Which will melt the contents of their bellies as well as their skin.

22:21 And they shall be held by iron grips.

22:22 Every time they try to escape (the fire) in their anguish, they will be returned to it, and (it will be said), 'Taste the punishment of the Burning Fire!'

22:23 As for those who have faith and do good deeds, Allah will certainly admit them to gardens beneath which rivers flow. They shall be decked with pearls and bracelets of gold, and their garments will be of silk.

22:24 This is because during their life on earth, they were guided to accept the pure words of Allah and they were shown the Way of the All Praiseworthy (Lord).

22:25 As for those who are unbelievers and stop others from the Way of Allah and from the Masjid-al-Haram, to which We have assigned all mankind with equal rights whether they are natives or foreigners, and whoever intends to deviate from righteousness to wrongdoing in its vicinity, We will make him taste a painful punishment.

22:26 (And remember) when We showed Ibrahim (عليه السلام) the site of the House, (We told him), 'Do not associate anything with Me and purify My House for those who will circumambulate around it, and those who stand to pray and those who bow down and prostrate themselves.'

22:27 Call all the people for Hajj.  Let them arrive on foot or mounted on lean camels. They will respond and arrive from all directions.

It is in Hadith It is narrated on the authority of Ibn Abbas (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) that when Ibrahim (عليه السلام) was commanded to call all the people for Hajj, he said : 'O Lord, how can I convey this to people when my voice will not reach them'. It was said : 'Call them and We will convey it.' So Ibrahim (عليه السلام) stood up and said, 'O mankind! Your Lord has established a House so come on pilgrimage to it.' It is said that the mountains lowered themselves so that his voice would reach all the regions of the earth, and those who were still in their mothers' wombs and their fathers' loins would hear the call. The response came from everyone in the cities, deserts and countryside, and those whom Allah has decreed will make the pilgrimage, until the Day of Resurrection : 'At Your service, O Allah, at Your service.' (Ibn Jarir, Ibn Abi Hatim)

22:28 So that they may witness all (the spiritual, social, and economic) benefits in store for them, and offer during the known, appointed days the sacrificial cattle that He has provided for them by pronouncing Allah's Name over them. Eat of their meat and feed the distressed, the poor.

22:29 So let the pilgrims perform their acts of purification and fulfill their vows. And then circumambulate around the Honorable House (Ka'ba).

22:30 That (is they have listened to it).  As for anyone who honors the sacred ordinances of Allah, it is good for him in the sight of his Lord.  Livestock have been permitted to you, except what has been explicitly forbidden. So turn away from the filth of idols, and turn away from telling lies.

22:31 Dedicate yourselves to Allah and do not commit shirk with Him,   for anyone who commits shirk, it is as though he had fallen from the sky; then his body is either snatched away by birds or carried away by the wind to some far-off place,

22:32 that ( is you have already listened and became aware of His command).  And anyone who honors the symbols set up by Allah it shows that he is  righteous at heart.

22:33 There are advantages for you in these (cattle) up to a time, then their place is (near) the old Honorable House for sacrifice.

22:34 For every community We have ordained certain rites that they may commemorate the name of Allah by reciting it over the cattle We have given them for sacrifice. Your God is one God, so be obedient to Him. Give good tidings to those who bow in obedience to Allah,

22:35 (The people who are obedient to Allah are those) Whose hearts are filled with awe when the name of Allah is mentioned before them, who endure with fortitude what befalls them, and those who establish Salah and those who spend from what We have provided them.

22:36 We have made sacrificial camels (and cattle) among the symbols of Allah, in which there is  good for you. So pronounce the Name of Allah over them when they are lined up (for sacrifice). Once they have fallen (lifeless) on their sides, you may eat from their meat, and feed the needy, those who do not beg, and those who do. In this way We have subjected these (animals) to you so that you may be grateful.

22:37 It is not their meat nor their blood, that reaches Allah.  It is your piety that reaches Him. He has thus made them subject to you, that you may glorify Allah for His Guidance to you. And proclaim the good news to all who do right.

22:38 Truly, Allah defends those who believe. Surely, Allah does not like any treacherous, ungrateful.

22:39 Permission (to fight) has been given to those against whom war is being waged wrongfully, because they were wronged. And Allah is surely capable of giving them victory.

The above verse clarifies that Muslims are permitted to fight defensive wars. War is waged against the oppressors to establish peace in the land.

History of early Islam is witness that Muslims did not fight with anyone who wanted to live in peace with them. They took up arms only against those tyrants who were existential threat to Muslims and those who were the sworn enemies. Thus, the wars were essentially defensive in nature and the aim was to establish order and peace in the world. If Muslims had done what Christians/Jews did in Spain and other places, entire continents of Asia, Africa and half of Europe would have 100% Muslim population today.

22:40 (They are) those who have been driven from their homes unjustly, for saying only that 'Our Lord is Allah.' And, if Allah did not intervene by using some people to drive out others, many monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques, where Allah's name is much remembered, would have been destroyed. Allah is sure to help those who help His cause, for truly Allah is strong and mighty.

The above verse is not meant to be interpreted that the present monasteries, churches and synagogues and even mosques run by some deviant sects like Salafis, Deobandis, Ahle Hadith, Wahhabis and their like minded groups, all come under the category of praying places of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ). Whatever meeting place or place of worship in which it is propagated that Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) has sons or Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) has a physical body and sitting over the skies or where idols of Prophets and past dignitaries are worshiped, or where disrespect and blasphemy of Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) is propagated openly, is not a place of worship where Allah's (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) is remembered. These are the places where faithlessness is taught to people. There cannot be two opinions in this context.

By saying so, we do not mean to hate or discriminate people on the basis of their faith. Faith is a choice, and everyone is free to chose the faith of his choice and we are required to keep cordial relations with the people of all faiths. There is no second opinion in this context.

Our argument is based on Sahih Iman which has been taught to us by Prophet Mohammad If someone is not following the truthful teachings of Islam as taught by Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), he may not be treated as a believer in Hereafter. The whole Quran and Prophet's Sunnah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) attest to this fact.

It is in Quran - وَالَّذِينَ اتَّخَذُوا مَسْجِدًا ضِرَارًا وَكُفْرًا وَتَفْرِيقًا بَيْنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَإِرْصَادًا لِّمَنْ حَارَبَ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ مِن قَبْلُ ۚ وَلَيَحْلِفُنَّ إِنْ أَرَدْنَا إِلَّا الْحُسْنَىٰ ۖ وَاللَّهُ يَشْهَدُ إِنَّهُمْ لَكَاذِبُونَ - لَا تَقُمْ فِيهِ أَبَدًا ۚ لَّمَسْجِدٌ أُسِّسَ عَلَى التَّقْوَىٰ مِنْ أَوَّلِ يَوْمٍ أَحَقُّ أَن تَقُومَ فِيهِ ۚ فِيهِ رِجَالٌ يُحِبُّونَ أَن يَتَطَهَّرُوا ۚ وَاللَّهُ يُحِبُّ الْمُطَّهِّرِينَ [ And (there are) those (hypocrites) who took for themselves a mosque for causing harm and disbelief and division among the believers and as a station for whoever had warred against Allah and His Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) before. And they will surely swear, 'We intended only the best.' And Allah testifies that indeed they are liars. Do not stand (for prayer) within it, ever.

A mosque founded on righteousness (Sahih Iman) from the first day is more worthy for you to stand in. Within it are men who love to purify themselves; and Allah loves those who purify themselves. (At-Tawba - 107-08)

22:41 They are the believers who, if We give them authority on earth,  (they will) establish Salah and pay Zakat  and enjoin and promote what is right and good and forbid and try to prevent the evil. With Allah rests the outcome for all matters.

22:42 If they deny you (O' Prophet  ﷺ), so did the people of Nooh (عليه السلام) before them, as well as (the tribes of) Aa'd and Thamud,

22:43 And those of Ibrahim and Loot (عليهم السلام).

22:44 As well as the residents of Madian had denied their Prophets, likewise Musa (عليه السلام) was also denied. Initially, I gave respite to all those unbelievers and then I seized them.  See how terrible was My censure!

22:45 And many townships We have destroyed while they were involved in wrongdoing. (Even today you can see) their ruins fallen with their roofs, many deserted wells, and lofty (deserted) castles!

22:46 Have they not traveled through the land? Have they no hearts to learn wisdom, or ears to hear the Truth? Certainly it is not their eyes which are blind, but it is the hearts in their breasts which are blind.

22:47 Yet they ask thee to hasten on the Punishment! But Allah will not fail in His Promise. Verily a Day in the sight of your Lord is like a thousand years of your counting.

22:48 And to many townships I gave respite while they were wrongdoing. Then (in the end) I seized them. And to Me is the final return (of all).

22:49 Say (O' Prophet  ﷺ) : 'O mankind! Surely I am a manifest Warner to you.

22:50 Those who believe and do good deeds, they shall have forgiveness and an honorable sustenance.

22:51 But those who strive to discredit Our revelations, they will be the residents of the Hell.'

22:52 Never did We send an Apostle or a Prophet before you,  but that when he recited (Allah's Revelations to the people) Satan would make insinuations (about these Revelations, prompting people to misconstrue them in many wrong senses, rather than the right one). But Allah abrogates whatever insinuations Satan may make, and then He confirms and establishes His Revelations. Allah is All Knowing, All Wise.

22:53 Whatever Satan throws in, Allah may make as a trial for those in whose hearts there is a disease (of hypocrisy and disbelief) and whose hearts are hardened.  Certainly, the wrongdoers are deadly opposed to the Truth.

22:54 While those who have been granted knowledge (of the truth) know that whatever Allah reveals is the truth, and they believe in it and their hearts submit to Him in utmost humility. Allah guides to the straight path those who believe.

22:55 But the unbelievers will continue to be in doubt about it (the Quran) until the Hour of Doom comes suddenly on them, or there comes on them a punishment of the Day of Disaster.

22:56 The sovereignty on that Day belongs to Allah; He will judge between them. So, those who believed and did righteous deeds will be in the Gardens of Delight.

22:57 And they who disbelieved and denied Our signs; for those there will be a humiliating punishment.

22:58 Those who emigrated from their homes in the way of Allah, and then were killed or died, will surely be given a better provision by Allah, for Allah is surely the best of providers.

22:59 He will admit them into an abode they are pleased with.  Indeed Allah is All Knowing, All Forbearing.

22:60 That (is  so).  If anyone retaliates because he was wronged unjustly, and seeks damages proportionate to his suffering (then he is justified).  And if he is wronged again, then (he will find that) Allah will definitely assist him. Allah is indeed Oft Pardoning and Oft Forgiving.

22:61 That is because Allah causes the night to enter the day and causes the day to enter the night and because Allah is All Hearing and All Seeing.

22:62 That is because Allah is the truth, and whatever they (polytheists) invoke besides Him, it is falsehood. And verily Allah is the Supreme, the Great.

22:63 Do you not see that Allah sends down rain from the sky, then the earth becomes green? Surely Allah is Most Subtle, All Aware.

22:64 To Him belongs all that is in the heavens and the earth; surely Allah is the One Who is the Self-sufficient, the Praiseworthy.

22:65 Do you not see that Allah has made everything on the earth of service to you, including the ships that sail through the sea by His command. And that He prevents sky from falling on the earth without His permission? Indeed, Allah is Most Gracious and Most Merciful to human beings.

22:66 And He is the one who gave you life; then He causes you to die and then will (again) give you life. Indeed, mankind is ungrateful.

22:67 For every community We appointed a code of life to follow. So do not let them dispute with you  (O Prophet  ﷺ) in this matter. And invite (them) to your Lord, for you are truly on the Right Guidance.

22:68 If they argue with you, tell them,  'Allah  knows well what you are doing.'

22:69 Allah will judge between you on the Day of Resurrection concerning the matters in which you differ.

22:70 Do you not know that surely Allah knows whatever there is in the heavens and on the earth (including whatever takes place in them). They are all recorded in a Book. This (keeping the record of them all) is indeed easy for Allah.

22:71 And they worship these (idols), besides Allah, for which He has not sent down any authority. Nor do they have any knowledge of (the consequence of) this (idol worship). And there will be no helper of the wrongdoers (on the Day of Judgment).

22:72 And when Our clear Verses are recited to them, you will notice denial on the faces of those who disbelieve! They are nearly ready to attack with violence those who recite Our Verses to them.  Say: 'Shall I tell you something worse than that? It is the fire (of Hell) which Allah has promised to those who disbelieve, and worst indeed will be that destination!'

22:73 O' people! A parable is given, so listen to it (carefully). 'Those (idols) you invoke besides Allah can never create (even) a fly, even if they (all) were to come together for that. And if a fly were to snatch anything away from them, they cannot retrieve it from the fly. How powerless are those who invoke and those invoked!

22:74 They have not shown Allah the reverence He deserves.  Surely Allah is All Powerful, Almighty.

22:75 Allah chooses messengers from angels and from mankind. Indeed Allah is All Hearing, All Seeing.

22:76 He knows what is in front of them and what is hidden from them. And to Allah shall all matters return for decision.

22:77 O' believers! Bow down, prostrate yourselves, worship your Lord, and do  good deeds so that you may be successful.

The above is the 'verse of Sajda' (آیت سجدہ).

Turn towards Qibla, say (quietly) Allahu Akbar, go into prostration once, recite the 'Tasbih of Sajdah' 'Subhana Rabbi al-A'alaa' (سبحان ربّي الاعلى ) at least 3 times and raise from the Sajda saying Allahu Akbar.

22:78 And strive for the sake of Allah, a strive which is worthy of Him. He has chosen you and has not placed for you any obstacle in the religion, the faith of your father, Ibrahim (عليه السلام). He named you 'Muslims' before, and in this, so that the Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) will  be a witness to you, and that you will be witnesses to mankind.  So establish Salah, give the Zakat, and hold fast to Allah.  He is your Guardian, (what) an excellent Guardian (is He),  and an excellent protector?
