Juz 12 -

Hood

Hood | Sura # 11 | 123 verses | Makkan

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful

11:6 And there is none that walks upon the earth whose sustenance does not depend on Allah.  He knows where it shall stay and where it shall be deposited; everything is in the Manifest Book.

11:7 It is He who created the heavens and the earth in six days and His Throne was upon the waters, that He may test you which of you is best in conduct. Yet if you say, ‘You will indeed be raised up after death,’ the faithless will surely say, ‘This is nothing but manifest sorcery.’

The life is manifested in the shape of water in our physical world. The meaning of water in the above verse may be 'life' (Hayat). Since Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) created the entire cosmos in 6 days (six spans) His Tajalli dominant in the creation of the Cosmos was 'Life' (Hayat). Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) was giving life to the Cosmos. To explain this fact to human beings, Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) says that وَهُوَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ السَّمَوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ فِي سِتَّةِ أَيَّامٍ وَكَانَ عَرْشُهُ عَلَى الْمَاءِ [ It is He who created the heavens and the earth in six days and His Throne was upon the waters.] Allah ((عَزَّ وَجَلَّ)) and His Apostle Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) know best.

11:8 If We defer their punishment for a certain time, they will say : 'What is keeping it back?' And yet, the day it comes, they will not be able to avert it; and what they used to laugh at, will envelop them.

11:9 If We let human taste some Mercy from Us, and then take it away from him, he becomes hopeless, and thankless (forgetting all Our favors to him).

11:10 And if We let him taste ease and plenty after some hardship has visited him, he says: "Gone is all affliction from me!" Surely he is prone to vain exultation and self-glorification.

11:11 Except those who patiently endured and did good deeds; for them is forgiveness, and a great reward.

11:12 Surely you will (not) forsake part of what is divinely revealed to you and be disheartened because they say, 'Why has not a treasure been sent down along with him? Or 'an angel should have come with him'? You (O' Prophet  ﷺ) are indeed a Herald of Warning; and Allah is the Guardian over all things.

11:13 Do they say (of the Prophet ﷺ): 'He has forged (the Quran)?' Say : 'Then bring ten Surahs like it, and call anyone except Allah to help you, 'if what you say is true.'

Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) has challenged the entire humanity and Jinns, many a time in Quran that if they doubt in Quran, they should bring ten Suras like that of Quran. At another place in Quran, the challenge is reduced to one Sura.

It is in Quran - وَإِن كُنتُمْ فِي رَيْبٍ مِّمَّا نَزَّلْنَا عَلَى عَبْدِنَا فَأْتُوا بِسُورَةٍ مِّن مِّثْلِهِ وَادْعُوا شُهَدَاءَكُم مِّن دُونِ اللَّـهِ إِن كُنتُمْ صَادِقِينَ [ If you doubt (in this Quran) which has been sent down on Our chosen servant, (Apostle Mohammad ﷺ) then bring a chapter like it; and call all your helpers other than Allah, if you are truthful.] (Al-Baqara - 23)

Since the word of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) and the word of His creature cannot be equated, this challenge remains unfulfilled and will remain so till the day of resurrection.

It is consensus (اِجماع) of all Islamic scholars that Quran is a miracle bestowed on Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), a like of which cannot be produced by any human or jinn.

The 'inimitability' of Quran’ or ‘the Exception of Quran’ (اعجاز القرآن) has been a subject of discussion among Islamic scholars for a long time. Some view points in this context are given below.

(i) Some earlier people thought that Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) incapacitated competent people, or turned them away, from taking up the challenge of imitating Quran. This hypothesis was wrong. If you accept this hypothesis, then Quran does not remain a miracle, rather Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) incapacitating the people to write a book like that of Quran becomes a miracle.

It is in Quran قُل لَّئِنِ اجْتَمَعَتِ الْإِنسُ وَالْجِنُّ عَلَىٰ أَن يَأْتُوا بِمِثْلِ هَـٰذَا الْقُرْآنِ لَا يَأْتُونَ بِمِثْلِهِ وَلَوْ كَانَ بَعْضُهُمْ لِبَعْضٍ ظَهِيرًا [ Say, (O’Prophet ﷺ) If the mankind and the jinns were together to produce the like of this Qur'an, they could not produce the like thereof, even if they helped one another.] (Al-Israa - 88)

The above verse confirms that since Quran is the word of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ), a like of it, cannot be produced by a human being (a creature). The suspicion of disbelievers that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) might have authored it has been condemned by Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ).

It is in Quran - أَمْ يَقُولُونَ تَقَوَّلَهُ ۚ بَل لَّا يُؤْمِنُونَ - فَلْيَأْتُوا بِحَدِيثٍ مِّثْلِهِ إِن كَانُوا صَادِقِينَ [ Or do they say, "He (Prophet Mohammad ﷺ) has made it up"? Rather, they do not believe. Then let them produce a statement like it, if they are truthful.] (At-Toor - 33-34)

The Arabs of Prophet’s (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) time acknowledged the superiority of the speech of Quran. The smallest Surah in Quran is al-Kawthar that consists of 3 small verses - (إِنَّا أَعْطَيْنَاكَ الْكَوْثَرَ - فَصَلِّ لِرَبِّكَ وَانْحَرْ - إِنَّ شَانِئَكَ هُوَ الْأَبْتَرُ). In the past 1450 years no one has been able to bring a like of it. After seeing this Surah, a prominent Arabic poet of Quraish during Prophet’s (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) time wrote - مَا هذا كلام البشر [This is not from the speech of a servant].

(ii) Some people thought that the 'choice and arrangement of the words of Quran' makes it exceptional. Scholars like (a) Abdul Qahir al-Jurjani (d. 1078 CE) in his Dala'il al-I'jaz, (b) Fakhr ad-Din al-Razi (d. 1209) in his book Nihayat al-I'jaz fi Dirayat al-I'jaz, and (c) al-Zamakhshari (d. 1144 CE) in his Tafseer al-Kashsaf have explained this uniqueness in detail.

(iii) Later scholars upheld the rhetorical superiority of Qur'an, but considered that the contents of the Quran are also a miracle.

We have briefly discussed the miraculous nature of Quran in (a) Style, (b) Literature, (c) content, and (d) effect.

QURAN'S STYLE Quran comes out glaringly clear in terms of eloquence and rhetoric upon literate people; Arabs or non-Arabs alike.

What praise can be uttered about the comprehensiveness of eloquence and rhetoric of the noble Ahadith, the utterance of which is connected with Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) whose behest is - اُتِيْتُ جَوامِعَ الْكَلِمْ - اَنَا اَفْصَحُ الْعَرَبِيْ وَ الْعَجَمْ [ The Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said - I have been given the comprehensiveness of speech. My eloquence is unparalleled among Arabs and Non-Arabs.] (Abi Shaiba and Abu Ya'la) In spite of that, Quran is different altogether. Its style is distinct from the style of Ahadith. Thus, it is clear that Quran is not the speech of the Apostle

It is in Quran - وَمَا كُنتَ تَتْلُو مِن قَبْلِهِ مِن كِتَابٍ وَلَا تَخُطُّهُ بِيَمِينِكَ ۖ إِذًا لَّارْتَابَ الْمُبْطِلُونَ [ (O' Prophet ﷺ) you did not recite before it (Quran), any scripture, nor did you inscribe one with your right hand. Otherwise the falsifiers would have had doubt. ] (Al-Ankaboot - 48)

QURAN'S LITERATURE - As a literary monument, the Quran stands unique. It has neither forerunners nor successors.

The Arabic language and speech is divided into two branches, (i) rhymed poetry, and (ii) prose. We will not go into details here, but the challenge of Quran is to produce a piece of work that does not fall into all the branches of Arabic poetry and prose. And it should also contain comprehensive meaning and rhetoric. The Arabs could not bring even 3 verses like that of Quran. They realized that Quran’s form does not fit into any of the Arabic literature categories.

During the early period of Prophet’s (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) declaration of prophet-hood, a prominent person from Quraish, Al-Qama bin Abdul Munaf, is reported to have addressed the leaders of Quraish in Makka in the following words.

"O' Quraish, a new calamity has befallen upon you. When (Prophet) Mohammed (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) was young, he was the most liked among you, most truthful in speech, and most trustworthy, until, when you saw gray hairs on his temple, and he brought you his message, you said that he was a sorcerer, but he is not, for we have seen such people and their spittings and their knots. You said, he was a diviner, but we have seen such people and their behavior, and we have heard their rhymes. You said he was a soothsayer, but he is not a soothsayer, for we have heard their rhymes. You said he was a poet, but he is not a poet, for we have heard all kinds of poetry. You said he was possessed, but he is not, for we have seen the possessed, and he shows no signs of their gasping and whispering and delirium. O' people of Quraish, look to your affairs (realize the intensity/truthfulness of this new message). By God, a very serious thing has been sent down upon you.’

QURAN'S CONTENT - It is evident that human beings neither have the knowledge of the past nor of future. A person knows only the thing which is in front of his eyes. It means his knowledge is limited to his observations. At most, he contemplates with his observation and tries to deduce things.

Tidings of the unknown is not the work of the material man. Until Allah's (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) help is not there in between, this can not be accomplished.

There are details of the happenings in Quran about which the entire family of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) was unaware of; like Adam (علیه السلا م), Hawwa (علیها السلا م) and Satan's episode; the incident of Haabeel and Qabeel; the happening of Ibrahim (علیه السلا م), Ismail (علیه السلا م), Lut (علیه السلا م), Is'haq (علیه السلا م), Yaqub (علیه السلا م), Yusuf (علیه السلا م); episodes of Saleh (علیه السلا م) and the nation of Samud; the happenings of Shuayb (علیه السلا م) and the people of Mada'in and eika; Dawood (علیه السلا م) and Sulaiman (علیه السلا م), Musa (علیه السلا م), Haroon (علیه السلا م), Pharaoh, Hamaan, and the descendants of Israel and Qaroon's affairs; Zulqarnain, the people of Saba, As-hab al-Aqdood (اصحاب الاخدود), As-hab al-Kahaf (اصحاب الكهف), As-hab al-Raqeem (اصحاب الرّقيم) and As-hab Rus (اصحاب رس); all their incidents have been mentioned in the Quran that were recognized by the adversaries in the Prophet's (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) time.

[But (Quran is) a confirmation of what was before it, and a detailed explanation of the (earlier) Scripture, about which there is no doubt, from the Lord of the worlds.] (Yunus - 37)

There are foretelling in Quran which, till now, continuously proving to be true and correct. A few of these are given below.

(a) It is in Quran - سَيُهْزَمُ الْجَمْعُ وَيُوَلُّونَ الدُّبُرَ [Soon their multitude will be put to fight and they will show their backs (run away).] ( Al-Qamar - 45)

This was the foretelling of the people of Badr, in which the Quraishi pagans lost and ran away. This foretelling was fulfilled by Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ).

(b) It is in Quran قُل لِّلْمُخَلَّفِينَ مِنَ الْأَعْرَابِ سَتُدْعَوْنَ إِلَىٰ قَوْمٍ أُولِي بَأْسٍ شَدِيدٍ تُقَاتِلُونَهُمْ أَوْ يُسْلِمُونَ [ (O' Prophet ﷺ), tell the rural Arabs who were left out (at the journey of Hudaibiya), that 'you will be called in confrontation against the formidable fighters (Romans & Persians) and you will be fighting with them till they become Muslims.] (Al-Fatah 16).

The wars with Romans and Persians were fought during the Caliphate of Hadhrat Abu Bakr (رضئ الله تعالی عنه) and Hadhrat Umar Farooq (رضئ الله تعالی عنه). This was the glad tiding of the caliphate of Abu Bakr and Umar

[Undoubtedly, Allah had shown His Apostle ﷺ a true dream that, by Allah's will, you (Muslims) will enter Masjid al-Haram (Kabatullah) without fear and peril (in all composure) and ( in there) you (some of you) will have your heads shaven and (some ) will have your hairs cut.] ( Al-Fath - 27 ).

This was the foretelling about the victory of Makka, which Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) fulfilled.

QURAN'S EFFECT - Before Prophet Mohammad’s (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) migration to Madina, the Chief of Medina Asad bin Zerarah, went out of his house, fully armed, with an ulterior motive of exiling Musab bin Umair (رضئ الله تعالى عنه), who was sent by the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) to preach in Medina, but the voice of someone reciting the verses of the Quran fell on his ears. The effect of these verses was so great that he embraced Islam at the hand of Musab bin Umair (رضئ الله تعالى عنه), the very person he wanted to exile.

Khalid bin Aqba, who, while passing by, heard the verses of Quran being recited. He was mesmerized and said : 'By Allah there is a strange sweetness in it, there is a strange freshness. It’s roots are saturated with water and its branches are over-laden with fruits. Man cannot converse like this!'

Utba was an eminent leader of Quraish infidels. When Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) recited Quran, he placed both his hands on the ground and started swaying to and fro, weeping. When Waleed heard Quran, he said - اِنَّ عَلَيْهَا طَلاوَةٌ ، و فِيْهَا حَلَاوةٌ [ In it there is freshness and sweetness].

There are many instances when people accepted Islam just from listening to the verses. The effects of Quranic verses are varied. They are also useful in 'answering of the objectives / wishes and prevention of disease and warding off, of evil touch. Many books have been written by Islamic scholars in this regard. The books like 'Shamsul Ma'arif by Booni and Muraqqa Kalimi of Kalimullah Jahanabadi, etc., are important in this context. In the invocations (ازکار) mentioned in these books, the supreme and the most effective invocations are invocation from the verses of Quran.

11:14 So (O' Muslims), if they are unable to reply to this challenge of yours, then know well that it is sent down only with the knowledge of Allah; and that except Him, there is no real God; so will you now accept?

11:15 Whoever desires the life of this world and its comforts, We shall give them the full reward for their deeds in itself, and not make any reduction in it.

11:16 It is they for whom there is nothing in the Hereafter but the Fire. All that they produced in it (this world) has come to nothing and all that they were doing is vain.

The above verses are important to know the fact behind the luxurious lives of those who spend their lives in the pursuit of comforts in this world. Whatever their pursuit, they are provided for.

A person who is in pursuit of his and his family's welfare in this world as well as in Hereafter, will be provided as per his efforts. Thus, it is important that we should strive for providing a decent life to our children and other dependents by educating ourselves in such a way that we can ensure a good living for ourselves and others. At the same time, we should not ignore the commandments of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) and His Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) and lead our life as an honest Muslim to ensure our salvation and rewards in Hereafter.

11:17 So, (how can you compare others with) the one who stands on a clear evidence from his Lord (the Quran), and is supported by a witness guided by Him, and there was (revealed) before it the Book of Musa (عليه السلام) (confirming it) as a guide and Mercy? Those (who make and understand the comparison) believe in it (the Quran); while whoever from the diverse parties  disbelieves in it, the Fire will be their promised place. And so you should not have the least doubt of it (the Quran). Surely, it is the truth from your Lord, though most of the people do not believe.

11:18 And who is more unjust than the one who fabricates a lie against Allah? They will be presented before their Lord, and the witnesses (the Prophets) will say, 'These are they who lied concerning their Lord; the curse of Allah be upon the unjust.'

11:19 Those who keep (the people) away from the path of Allah and seek to paint it as crooked,  they are those who disbelieve in the Hereafter.

11:20 They will not be able to escape in the earth, nor do they have any protecting friends apart from Allah; they will have punishment upon punishment (repeated punishment) for they could neither hear nor see.

11:21 They are those who exceeded themselves, and the (gods) they invented abandoned them.

11:22 Without doubt, in the Hereafter they will be the greatest losers.

11:23 Indeed those who have faith and do righteous deeds and are humble before their Lord, they shall be the inhabitants of paradise, and they shall remain in it (forever).

11:24 The example of these two groups is that of a man who is deaf and blind, and the other who can hear and see. Can they be equal? Why do you not reflect?

11:25 We sent Nooh (عليه السلام) to his people (and he said) : 'I give you a clear warning.'

The stories of the Prophets are repeated again and again in Quran to warn people of the consequences of rejecting the signs of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ).

The story of Prophet Nooh (عليه السلام) is described here to serve as a warning to those who persistently rejected the message of Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم). So far, arguments were presented to them to identify their misdeeds and warn them about the consequences. From here, examples of the people of Nooh and other prophets (عليهم السلام) are given to let them remind what happened to them for rejecting Allah's (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) signs.

11:26 Worship none but Allah. Indeed I fear for you the punishment of a painful day.

11:27 The leaders of the people who were unbelievers, replied : 'We see that you are but a man like us, and see that none among us follows you but the meanest and immature of judgement, and do not see any excellence in you above us. In fact, we think you are a liar.'

11:28 He said : 'O my people, think. If I have a clear proof from my Lord, and He has bestowed on me His grace, though unknown to you, (so I cannot) force (the Mercy of your Lord) upon you when you are averse (towards it)?

11:29 O my people, I do not demand for it any wealth from you. My reward is with Allah.  And I will not drive those (poor believers) away who believe. They have also to meet their Lord.  But I see you are an ignorant people.

11:30 O my people, who will save me from Allah if I drive them away? Do you not understand?

11:31 I say not that I have the treasures of Allah, or that I possess the knowledge of the unseen. I do not claim myself to be an angel, nor can I say that Allah will not bestow any good on those you disdain, for Allah is aware of what is in their hearts.  If I say this, I will surely be unjust.'

11:32 They said : "O Nooh (عليه السلام), You have argued with us, and have prolonged your arguments; so stop arguing with us and, if you are telling the truth, bring upon us what you have been threatening us with.'

11:33 He said, 'Allah will surely bring that upon you if He wills, and you will not be able to escape.'

11:34 Even if I wish to advise you aright, my counsel will not profit you if Allah intends that you go astray, for He is your Lord and to Him you will return.'

11:35 Do they say you have fabricated it? Tell them : 'If I have fabricated it, then mine is the consequence; but I am  not concerned with your sins.'

11:36 And it was divinely revealed to Nooh (عليه السلام) that 'None of your people will become Muslims, except those who have already accepted faith; therefore do not grieve at what they do.'

11:37 Build an ark under Our direction and as per Our instructions.  And do not plead for those who have been wicked, for they shall certainly be drowned.

11:38 So he built the ark; and when ring leaders among his people passed by him, they mocked at him. He said to them : 'Though you laugh at us (now), we shall laugh at you (later), as you are laughing at us.'

11:39 So now you will come to know upon whom comes the punishment that disgraces him (in this world), and upon whom descends the permanent punishment (in Hereafter).

11:40 When Our command was issued and the waters gushed forth from the source, We said : 'Take into (the ark) a pair of every species, and members of your family other than those against whom the sentence has already been passed, and those who come to believe.' But only a few believed in him.

It looks from the above verse that when the command of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) came, the water started gushing from a specific Oven (At-Tannur - التَّنُّورُ) or may be from many springs from the earth followed by heavy rains. Thus, the entire planet earth was covered with water.

It is in Quran - فَفَتَحْنَا أَبْوَابَ السَّمَاءِ بِمَاءٍ مُّنْهَمِرٍ - وَفَجَّرْنَا الْأَرْضَ عُيُونًا فَالْتَقَى الْمَاءُ عَلَىٰ أَمْرٍ قَدْ قُدِرَ [ Then We opened the gates of the skies with rain pouring down. And caused the earth to burst with springs, and the waters met for a matter already predestined. ] (Al-Qamar - 11-12).

Thus everyone who disbelieved drowned. The generations that came after Prophet Nooh (عليه السلام) were the descendants of the people rescued by Nooh (عليه السلام) in his Ark.

It is in Quran - ذُرِّيَّةَ مَنْ حَمَلْنَا مَعَ نُوحٍ [ O' descendants of those We carried (in the Ark) with Noah.] (Al-Isra - 3)

It is in Quran - أُولَـٰئِكَ الَّذِينَ أَنْعَمَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِم مِّنَ النَّبِيِّينَ مِن ذُرِّيَّةِ آدَمَ وَمِمَّنْ حَمَلْنَا مَعَ نُوحٍ وَمِن ذُرِّيَّةِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَإِسْرَائِيلَ وَمِمَّنْ هَدَيْنَا وَاجْتَبَيْنَا ۚ إِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِمْ آيَاتُ الرَّحْمَـٰنِ خَرُّوا سُجَّدًا وَبُكِيًّا [ Those were the ones upon whom Allah bestowed favor from among the prophets of the descendants of Adam and of those We carried (in the ship) with Nooh, and of the descendants of Ibrahim and Israel (عليهم السلام), and of those whom We guided and chose. When the verses of the Most Merciful were recited to them, they fell in prostration and weeping. ] (Maryam - 58)

11:41 And he said, (to everyone) 'board in (the ark). In the name of Allah is its movement and its stopping;  indeed my Lord is All Forgiving, Most Merciful.'

11:42 So the Ark floated with them amid waves like mountains, and Nooh (عليه السلام) cried out to a son of his who was standing apart, 'embark with us, my son, and do not be with the unbelievers!'

11:43 He said, 'I shall go up on a mountain and it will save me from the water'.  Nooh (عليه السلام) said, 'today there is none who can save from the punishment of Allah, except upon whom He has mercy.' And a wave came in between them, and he perished with the ones who drowned.

11:44 Then it was said : O earth, swallow back your water; and, O sky, desist (stop raining). And the water subsided, and the decree was accomplished.  The ark came to rest on Judi (Mount Ararat), and it was said : 'Away with the cursed people.'

11:45 And Nooh (عليه السلام) supplicated to his Lord and said, 'My Lord, indeed my son is also of my family, and surely Your promise is true and You are the Greatest Ruler of all.

11:46 He said, 'O Nooh (عليه السلام), he is not of your family; his deeds are most improper; therefore do not ask Me a thing of which you do not have knowledge; I advise you not to be unwise.

11:47 (Nooh  عليه السلام) said : 'O my Lord! I seek refuge in You, lest I should ask of You what I have no knowledge of. And unless You forgive me and have mercy on me, I will indeed be among the losers.'

It is not just Prophet Nooh's (عليه السلام) son, his wife was also drowned along with others.

It is in Quran - ضَرَبَ اللَّهُ مَثَلًا لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا امْرَأَتَ نُوحٍ وَامْرَأَتَ لُوطٍ ۖ كَانَتَا تَحْتَ عَبْدَيْنِ مِنْ عِبَادِنَا صَالِحَيْنِ فَخَانَتَاهُمَا فَلَمْ يُغْنِيَا عَنْهُمَا مِنَ اللَّهِ شَيْئًا وَقِيلَ ادْخُلَا النَّارَ مَعَ الدَّاخِلِينَ [ Allah presents an example of those who disbelieved. The wife of Nooh and the wife of Loot (عليهم السلام). They were under two of Our righteous servants but betrayed them, so those prophets did not avail them from Allah, and it was said, 'Enter the Fire with those who enter.' ] (At-Tahreem - 10)

11:48 It was said, 'O Nooh (عليه السلام), disembark in safety from Us and blessings upon you and upon nations (descending) from those with you. For some other nations (of them) We will grant enjoyment (and if they get involved in wrongdoings) there will touch them from Us a painful punishment.

11:49 This is news of the Unknown We reveal to you, which neither you nor your people knew before. So (O Prophet ﷺ) endure with patience. The future is for those who keep away from evil and follow the straight path.

The accounts of earlier prophets have been provided in Quran at numerous places and every time these are meant to caution people that if they repeat the actions of the past people in denying the signs of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) and getting involved in excessive evil, they will meet with the same fate as earlier people.

11:50 And to  (the people of) Aa'd (We sent) Hood (عليه السلام), their brother. He said, ‘O my people! Worship Allah. You have no other god besides Him. You have  fabricated (the idols you worship).

11:51 ‘O my people! I do not ask you any reward for it. My reward lies only with Him who created me.   Don't  you exercise any reasoning?

11:52 O my people, beg your Lord to forgive you, and turn to Him in repentance. He will send down rain in abundance for you from the skies, and give you added strength. So don't turn away from Him as evil doers.'

11:53 They said, ‘O Hood (عليه السلام), you have not brought us any manifest proof (a miracle). We are not going to abandon our gods for what you say, and we are not going to believe you.

11:54 'We only say that you have been severely struck by one of our deities'. Hood (عليه السلام) said, 'I make Allah a witness, and you all bear witness that I have no relation with whatever you ascribe (as partners to Allah)',

11:55 besides Him, therefore all of you plot against me and do not give me respite.

11:56 I place my trust in Allah who is my Lord and your Lord. There is no creature that moves on earth who is not held by its forelock firmly by Him. Verily the way of my Lord is straight.

11:57 'If you turn away, then (remember) I have delivered to you the message I was sent with. (If you insist on disbelief) My Lord will put other people in your place, and you will not be able to prevail against Him.  Indeed my Lord keeps a watch over all things.'

11:58 So, when Our command was issued,  We rescued Hood (عليه السلام) by Our grace, and those who believed with him, and saved them from a dreadful doom.

11:59 These were the people of A'ad who denied the word of their Lord and rebelled against His Apostles, and followed the instructions of every perverse tyrant.

11:60 They were condemned in this life and will be condemned in the Hereafter. Look, (the tribes of) A'ad, the nation of Hood (عليه السلام) indeed defied their Lord.

11:61 And to (the people of ) Thamud  (We sent)  Salih (عليه السلام), their brother. He said, ‘O my people! Worship Allah. You have no other god besides Him. He brought you forth from the earth and made it your habitation. So plead with Him for forgiveness, then turn to Him penitently. My Lord is indeed near and answers the calls.'

11:62 They said : 'O Salih (عليه السلام),  we expected it from you before, that (you will not like our ways). But now you seek to prevent us from worshiping what our forefathers used to worship? Indeed we are in real doubt concerning what you call us to.'

11:63 He said : 'O my people, have you considered that if my Lord has clearly shown me the way, and I have His blessings too, then who will save me from Allah if I disobey Him? You will only add to my ruin.

After listening the above argument, the people of Salih (عليه السلام) demanded a miracle from him. They also demanded the specifics of the miracle. They said a She camel should appear for them who should give birth to a baby and its milk should be sufficient for a large number of people. Thus a she-camel miraculously appeared in front of them from a hill and gave birth to a baby. She was very huge and its milk was sufficient for a large number of people. Since they were fully aware that the she camel was a miracle, they allowed it to graze freely for a while as per the instructions of Salih (عليه السلام). However, they got used to it and started taking it easy and eventually killed it and thought that nothing will happen to them. They even challenged Prophet Salih (عليه السلام) to bring the promised punishment on them.

11:64 And O my people, this is the she-camel of Allah,  for you a sign. Let her graze on Allah's earth and do not touch her with harm, or you will be taken by an impending punishment.

11:65 But they hamstrung her (by severing her legs), and then Salih (عليه السلام) said : Enjoy life in your homes for  three days! This is a threat that will not be belied.

11:66 So, when Our command (of punishment) came We saved Salih (عليه السلام) by Our grace, and those who believed, with him, from the disgrace of that day.  Verily your Lord is Mighty and Powerful.

11:67 The Shriek seized those who were wrongdoers, and they lay lifeless, prostrate in their homes,

11:68 As if they had never lived and flourished there. Look, the Thamud rejected their Lord, and look, they were removed completely from the sight.

11:69 And Our messengers (angels) came to Ibrahim (عليه السلام) with good news. They said : Peace (be on you)! He answered : Peace (be on you). And he delayed not in bringing a roasted calf (for them to eat).

11:70 But when he saw their hands not reaching for it (they were not inclined to eat), it was strange and he felt apprehension from them. They said, 'Fear not. We have been sent to the people of Loot (عليه السلام).'

11:71 And his wife was standing (by), so she laughed when they were given the good news of (a son) Ishaq and after Ishaq of (a grandson) Yaqoub (عليهم السلام).

11:72 She said, 'Woe to me! Shall I give birth while I am an old woman and this, my husband, is an old man? Indeed, this is an amazing thing!'.

11:73 They said, 'Are you amazed at the decree of Allah? The mercy of Allah and His blessings be upon you (and the) people of the house. Indeed, He is Praiseworthy and Honorable.'

Ibrahim (عليه السلام) had two wives, (i) Sarah (عليها السلام), and (Hajira) (عليها السلام). Hajira (عليها السلام) was the second wife, relatively younger than Sarah (عليها السلام). Sarah (عليها السلام) gave birth to Ishaq (عليه السلام). Later, Hajira (عليها السلام) also gave birth to a child, Ismail (عليه السلام). Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) is from the descendants of Ismail (عليه السلام).

11:74 And when the awe subsided and the good tidings had reached him, Ibrahim (عليه السلام) started to plead with Us concerning the people of Loot (عليه السلام).

11:75 Indeed, Ibrahim (عليه السلام) was forbearing, beneficent and softhearted.

11:76 'O Ibrahim (عليه السلام), give up this (supplication). Indeed, the command of your Lord has (already) come, and surely there will reach them a punishment that cannot be repelled.'

11:77 And when Our messengers, (the angels), came to Loot (عليه السلام) (in human form as handsome youths). He was anguished for them and felt for them great discomfort (not being able to protect them from his disbelieving people) and said, 'This is a trying day.'

11:78 And his people came rushing towards him, and they had been long in the habit of practicing immorality.  He said : 'O my people! There are my daughters (the girls of the tribe) who are purer for you (so marry them).  Now fear Allah, and let me not get overwhelmed with shame (in front of my) guests! Is there not among you a single right-minded person?'

11:79 They said : 'Surely you know that we have neither any need nor any desire of your daughters (the women of the tribe), and indeed you know well what we want.'

11:80 He said, ‘If only I had the power to deter you, or could take refuge in a mighty support!’

11:81 O' Loot (عليه السلام) (said the angels), we have indeed been sent by your Lord. They will never be able to harm you. So, leave (your home) late at night with your family, and none of you should turn back to look; but your wife will suffer (what) they are going to suffer. Their hour of doom is in the morning. Is not the morning near?'

11:82 So when the decreed moment arrived, We turned the habitations upside down, and rained upon them stones of hardened lava in quick succession,

11:83 marked by your Lord. Such a punishment is not far away from the unjust people.

11:84 And to Midian (We sent) Shuaib (عليه السلام), their brother (a person from their own community). He said, ‘O my people! Worship Allah. You have no other god besides Him. And do not decrease from the measure and the scale. Indeed, I see you in prosperity, but certainly, I fear for you the punishment of an all encompassing Day.

11:85 O' My people, be equitable in your weighing and measuring. Do not defraud people or spread evil in the land.

11:86 'What Allah leaves with you (the lawful profit) is better for you, if you are believers.  And I am not a keeper and watcher over you.'

11:87 They said : 'O Shuaib (عليه السلام), does your piety teach that we should abandon what our fathers worshiped, or desist from doing what we like with our goods? Do you think that only you are forbearing and rightly guided.

11:88 He said ‘O my people have you considered that I might be acting upon a clear proof from my Lord and that He has provided me with good sustenance from Him?  And I do not wish for myself what I forbid you. I only wish to reform you as best as I can.  My success is from Allah alone.  In  Him I have placed my trust and to Him I turn.

11:89 And O my people, let not your defiance from me cause you to be struck by that similar to what struck the people of Nooh or the people of Hood or the people of salih (عليهم السلام). And the people of Loot (عليه السلام) are not distant from you.

11:90  And seek forgiveness from your Lord, then turn to Him in repentance. Indeed, my Lord is Most Merciful, Most Loving.

11:91  They said, 'O Shuaib (عليه السلام), we do not understand much of what you say.  Indeed we see you are weak among us, and were it not for your (respectable) tribe, we would have stoned you (to death), and (surely) you are not respectable to us.'

11:92 He said, 'O my people! Is the respect of my tribe over you is more than Allah? And you have cast Him behind your back. No doubt, whatever you do, is under the control of my Lord.'

11:93 O my people! keep on acting as per your wishes, I too am working (as per my belief). Soon you will know who will be overtaken by a punishment that will disgrace him, and who is a liar. So be on the watch; I too will be watching along with you.’

11:94 And when Our command came, We saved Shuaib (عليه السلام) and those who believed with him by Our mercy. And the shriek seized the wrong doers. Their dead bodies lay prostrate in their homes by the morning,

11:95 As if they had never lived there. Look! How Madian were removed (from the sight) as were removed Thamud.

11:96 Certainly We sent Musa (عليه السلام) with Our signs and manifest authority,

11:97 to Pharaoh and his elite, but they followed Pharaoh’s dictates, and Pharaoh’s dictates were not right-minded.

11:98 On the Day of Resurrection he will lead his people and drive them into Hell like cattle are driven to water.  What an evil place to reach!

11:99 They were pursued by a curse in the world, (that will continue) on the Day of Resurrection.  (Thus) evil is the award conferred (on them)!

11:100 These are from the news of the townships We relate to you (O' Prophet  ﷺ). Of them, some are (still) standing and some have been mown down.

11:101 And We did not wrong them, they wronged themselves. Of no avail to them were their gods whom they would invoke besides Allah when there came the command of your Lord. And they did not increase them in other than ruin.

11:102 Such is the crushing grip of your Lord when He seizes the townships that are repressive. Indeed His seizing is severe and painful.

11:103 There is indeed a sign for those who fear the punishment of Hereafter. That is a day on which all people will be gathered, and it is a day witnessed (by all).

11:104 And We defer it only to a term already reckoned.

11:105 On the day when it comes, no one will speak without His permission. Some will be wretched and others blessed.

11:106 As for the wretched, they will be in the Fire. Therein they will be moaning and wailing.

11:107 They shall remain in it for as long as the heavens and the earth endure, except what your Lord may wish;  indeed your Lord does whatever He desires.

There are three types of people; (i) Those who have 'Sahih Iman' and whose deeds are good. They will be in Paradise. (ii) Those who have 'Sahih Iman' but are sinful. They will serve their sentence of punishment for their sins/crimes, at the end of which they will be sent back to Paradise from the mediation of Prophet Mohammad (iii) Those who do not have Sahih Iman will remain in Hell forever.

There are many deviant sects who call themselves Muslims and claim Paradise for themselves. They should know that without Sahih Iman, their claim of Islam/Islamic deeds will not help them in Hereafter.

11:108 Those who are blessed will be in Paradise, where they will dwell so long  as heaven and earth survive, unless your Lord wills otherwise.  This will be a gift uninterrupted.

11:109 So do not be in doubt, as to what these (polytheists) are worshiping. They worship not, except as their fathers worshiped before. And indeed, We will give them their share undiminished.

11:110 And no doubt, We gave Musa (عليه السلام) the Book, and there arose disagreements about it (even as there are disagreements now about the Book revealed to you).  And were it not for a prior decree of your Lord, the matter would have been decided between them.  And no doubt, they are in a deceptive doubt about it (the Quran).

11:111  Your Lord will indeed recompense everyone fully for their deeds. Indeed He is well aware of what they do.

11:112  So, you (lead) those who turned to Allah in your (guidance), in walking on the straight path as you have been commanded, and do not (let people) transgress, for He verily sees whatever you (people) do.

11:113 And (O' People) do not incline toward the wrongdoers, lest the Fire should touch you, No one can be your protector except Allah nor will anyone be able to help you.

It is important for Muslims not to get fascinated by the riches and customs of wrongdoers within and outside Islam.

Getting fascinated by the customs and culture of non Muslims may lead you to commit an act of Kufr knowingly or unknowingly and there is a chance that you will go out of Islam

Similarly, getting fascinated with customs and culture of the so called Muslims (who may be Munafiqeen) or who are fearless of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) or who are involved in blasphemy of Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), Sahabah and Awliya Allah, there is a chance that you may loose your Iman.

In both the cases, the risks are high. Thus it is important that, while you are polite and cordial with everyone in the world, safe guard your Iman at any cost and die as Muslim.

11:114 And establish prayer at the two ends of the day and in the beginning hours of the night. Indeed, good deeds efface misdeeds (sins). That is a reminder for those who remember.

11:115  And be patient; indeed Allah does not waste the reward of the virtuous.

11:116 If only there had been among the generations of the past communities before you, men possessing a remnant of good sense, men of religion and virtue, forbidding corruption in the earth, except a few, whom We saved. Those who were wicked followed that which made them dissolute, and became sinners.

11:117 Your Lord would never destroy the townships unjustly while their inhabitants were reformers.

If there had been more people among the past generations of the past communities, who were religious and virtuous with good sense, probably would have influenced their communities towards good and their communities could have been saved from the punishment they suffered. There were very very few good people among them who could not influence the large number of people. For their goodness, they were saved, but their communities, because of their evil acts and collective transgression were destroyed. Allah would never destroy the townships unjustly while their inhabitants were reformers.

11:118  Had your Lord wished, He would have made mankind one community; but they continue to differ,

11:119 Except those on whom your Lord has mercy, and that is why He created them, and the word of your Lord has been fulfilled : 'I will surely fill Hell with jinn and humans, all together.'

What was the word of Lord? This was the command of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) when Satan argued with Him declining to prostrate to Adam (عليه السلام).

It is in Quran - لَأَمْلَأَنَّ جَهَنَّمَ مِنكَ وَمِمَّن تَبِعَكَ مِنْهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ [ (That) I will surely fill Hell with you (Satan) and those of them that follow you, all together.] (Saad - 85)

11:120 (O' Prophet  ﷺ) Whatever We relate to you of the accounts of the (past) Apostles are those by which We strengthen your heart, In it (the Quran) We have revealed the Truth to you with good advice and reminders for the believers.

11:121  Tell the unbelievers, 'Do as you wish and I will do as I believe.

11:122 And wait, indeed we (too) are waiting.

11:123 To Allah belongs the Unseen of the heavens and the earth, and to Him all matters are returned.  So worship Him and trust in Him. Your Lord is not oblivious of what you do.

Yusuf

Yusuf | Sura # 12 | 111 verses | Makkan

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful

12:1 Alif-Laam-Ra. These are the Verses of the Illumining Book (the Quran).

الر [ Alif-Laam-Ra ] - 'Alif-Laam-Ra' is known as ‘Solemn Verse' (Ayat-e-Muqatta'at - آیتِ مقطعات).

Fourteen Arabic alphabets have been used, in varied combinations, in 14 ‘Solemn Verses' (Ayaat-e-Muqatta'at - آیاتِ مقطعات) in the form of initials of 29 Chapters (سورة) of holy Quran. Alif-Laam-Ra (الر ) is one of them.

Since Quran is 'Mubeen' (الْمُبِينِ); its description is clear and manifest. The meanings of all the verses of Quran, including 'Solemn Verses' (آیاتِ مقطعات) are surely known to its principle addressee, ie., Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم). It is also likely that Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) has informed the meanings of these Verses to some of his Sahabah and Awliya Allah.

We believe in whatever is meant by the 'Solemn Verses' (آیاتِ مقطعات) by Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) and His Apostle Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم).

Since we have been commanded to read the Quran carefully and try to understand the significance of every verse of the Quran, we do ponder over these verses. And when we think, by focusing our attention towards Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) and His Apostle Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) for guidance, it comes to our mind that the 'Solemn Verses' (آیاتِ مقطعات) are actually the 'Solemn Titles of Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) given by Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) throughout the Quran. Our understanding is based on the fact that Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) has addressed Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) in the Quran by specific names, like Muzzammil (مزمل - O' beloved who covers self in a coverlet), Muddassir (مدثر - O' beloved, who covers self in a bed sheet). With this understanding, it is most likely that Prophet’s (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) other names / titles have been mentioned in Quran by denoting certain initials/alphabets.

12:2 Verily, We have revealed the Quran in Arabic so that you comprehend (it fully).

12:3 We will recount to you the best of narratives in what We have revealed to you of this Quran, and indeed prior to it you were among those who are unaware (about them).

Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) has provided narratives of many Prophets and Apostles in the Quran, among them the story of Yusuf (عليه السلام) is unique. The story consists of sequences of episodes that are informative and inspiring.

The stories of prophets have been mentioned in successive Suras in the Quran. We have discussed here briefly about Prophets mentioned in the Quran.

Islam distinguishes between an Apostle of Allah (Rasool) and a Prophet (Nabi). Both are recipients of Allah's revelations. However, the Apostle receives a divine message or revelation for a community in a book form. Every Rasool is a Prophet, however, not every Prophet is a Rasool. The following prophets by their names have been mentioned in the holy Quran.

(1) Adam (عليه السلام)

(2) Nooh – عليه السلام (Noah)

(3) Idris - عليه السلام (Enoch)

(4) Hood – عليه السلام (Eber)

(5) Salih – عليه السلام (Shelah)

(6) Ibrahim – عليه السلام (Abraham)

(7) Loot – عليه السلام (Lot)

(8) Is'haq – عليه السلام (Isaac)

(8) Isma’il – عليه السلام (Ishmael)

(10) Yaqoob – عليه السلام (Jacob)

(11) Yusuf – عليه السلام (Joseph)

(12) Ayyub – عليه السلام (Job)

(13) Shu'aib – عليه السلام (Jethro)

(14) Musa – عليه السلام (Moses)

(15) Haarun – عليه السلام (Aaron)

(16) Dawood – عليه السلام (David)

(17) Sulaiman – عليه السلام (Solomon)

(18) Ilyas – عليه السلام (Elijah)

(19) Al-Yasa – عليه السلام (Elisha)

(20) Uzair - عليه السلام (Ezra)

(21) Yunus – عليه السلام (Jonah)

(22) Dhul-Kifl – عليه السلام (Ezekiel)

(23) Zakariyya – عليه السلام (Zechariah)

(24) Yahya – عليه السلام (John the Baptist)

(25) Isa – عليه السلام (Jesus)

(26) Mohammad Rasoolullah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم)

In addition to the above, Prophet Sheeth (عليه السلام) (Seth) is mentioned in Ahadith. The Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said, 50 scriptures were sent down upon him. (Ibn Hibban) It is reported that he was the son of Adam (عليه السلام) who assumed the responsibility of mankind after the death of Adam (عليه السلام).

The real brother of Prophet Yusuf (عليه السلام) has been mentioned in Quran. Prophet Yusuf's (عليه السلام) mother's name was Raheel (عليها السلام). It is reported that Prophet Yusuf (عليه السلام) and his mother were the most beautiful persons on planet Earth. Yusuf (عليه السلام) had 10 step brothers and one real brother who was a prophet and his name was Binyameen (عليه السلام).

The other 10 step brothers of Yusuf (عليه السلام), namely, (i) Rubeel (Reuben), who was the eldest of them, (ii) Sham‘oon (Simeon), (iii) Laawi (Levi), (iv) Yahoodha (Judah), (v) Zayaaloon (Zebulon), (vi) Yashjir (Issachar), (vii) Daan (Dan), (viii) Naftaali (Naphtali), (ix) Jaad (Gad), and (x) Aashir (Asher) were not prophets.

The Prophets were sent by Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) in the world for the guidance of various nations at different times throughout the history of mankind.

[And certainly We sent Apostles before you (O' Prophet ﷺ), there are some of them that We have mentioned to you and there are others whom We have not mentioned to you] (Ghafir - 78).

[Mankind were one community, and Allah sent (to them) prophets as bearers of good tidings and as warners, and revealed therewith, the Scripture with the truth, that it might judge between mankind concerning that, wherein they differed. And only those to whom (the Scripture) was given differed concerning it, after clear proofs had come to them, through hatred of one another. And Allah by His Will guided those who believe in the truth of that, concerning which they differed. Allah guides whom He will to the straight path.] (Al-Baqara – 213).

It is in Quran - إِنَّا أَوْحَيْنَا إِلَيْكَ كَمَا أَوْحَيْنَا إِلَىٰ نُوحٍ وَالنَّبِيِّينَ مِن بَعْدِهِ ۚ وَأَوْحَيْنَا إِلَىٰ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَإِسْمَاعِيلَ وَإِسْحَاقَ وَيَعْقُوبَ وَالْأَسْبَاطِ وَعِيسَىٰ وَأَيُّوبَ وَيُونُسَ وَهَارُونَ وَسُلَيْمَانَ ۚ وَآتَيْنَا دَاوُودَ زَبُورًا [(O’ Prophet ﷺ) We have revealed to you, as We revealed to Nooh (عليه السلام), and the Prophets after him, and We revealed to Ibrahim (عليه السلام), Ismail (عليه السلام), Ishaq (عليه السلام), Yaqoob (عليه السلام) and the offspring of Ishaq (عليه السلام), and Isa (عليه السلام), and Ayyub (عليه السلام), and Yunus (عليه السلام), and Haroon (عليه السلام), and Sulaiman (عليه السلام), and We gave to Dawood (عليه السلام) Psalms’. (An-Nisa – 163).

It is in Quran - قُولُوا آمَنَّا بِاللَّهِ وَمَا أُنزِلَ إِلَيْنَا وَمَا أُنزِلَ إِلَىٰ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَإِسْمَاعِيلَ وَإِسْحَاقَ وَيَعْقُوبَ وَالْأَسْبَاطِ وَمَا أُوتِيَ مُوسَىٰ وَعِيسَىٰ وَمَا أُوتِيَ النَّبِيُّونَ مِن رَّبِّهِمْ لَا نُفَرِّقُ بَيْنَ أَحَدٍ مِّنْهُمْ وَنَحْنُ لَهُ مُسْلِمُونَ - [ Say (O’Muslims), We believe in Allah and that which has been sent down to us (Quran) and that which has been sent down to Abraham (Ibrahim – علیھ السلا م), Ishmael (Ismael - علیھ السلا م), Isaac (Is-haq - علیھ السلا م), Jacob (Ya'qub – علیھ السلا م), and to Al-Asbât (the twelve sons of Jacob - Ya'qub – علیھ السلا م), and that which has been given to Moses (Musa - علیھ السلا م) and Jesus ( Isa - علیھ السلا م), and that which has been given to the Prophets from their Lord. We (the Muslims) make no distinction between any of them, and to Him we have submitted (in Islam) (We are Muslims)].’ (Al-Baqara – 136).

There are differences of opinions among scholars on actual number of Prophets and Apostles. The most famous Ahadith in this context are as follows.

It is in Hadith - It is narrated on the authority of Abu Dharr (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ), who said : I said : O' Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), how many Prophets were there? He said : 'One hundred and twenty four thousand.' I said : O Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), how many of them were Apostles? He said : “Three hundred and fifteen, a good number.' I said : O Apostle of Allah (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), who was the first of them? He said : 'Adam (عليه السلام). (Sahih Ibn Hibbaan - 361)

It is in Hadith Abu Umamah al-Bahili narrated that Abu Dharr (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) asked the Prophet ( صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم ) how many Prophets were there?' The Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) replied 'One hundred twenty four thousand, from which three hundred fifteen were Apostles. Musnad Ahmed

We believe in all Prophets, including those who are mentioned in Quran. All of them have communicated the same message. The religions of all the Prophets has been the same which is monotheism (one-ness) of Almighty. There are no differences of teachings among prophets with regard to Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) because all of them are honest. Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) is the same who is there from the beginning and who will remain existent eternally.

12:4 When Yusuf (عليه السلام) said to his father, O' Father! I saw eleven stars, and the sun and the moon prostrating in front of me.

12:5 He said : 'O son, do not narrate your dream to your brothers, or they will plot against you.  Surely Satan is man's open enemy.

Prophet Yaqoob (عليه السلام) knew the potential of Yusuf (عليه السلام) and he loved him only for Allah's (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) sake. He knew about the rivalry of his other 10 sons with Yusuf (عليه السلام) and his brother Binyameen (عليه السلام) as they were not happy to see their father's attention towards Yusuf (عليه السلام) and his brother. They did not realize that the affection of their father towards these sons was for Allah's (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) sake. This is the reason he stopped Yusuf (عليه السلام) from disclosing his dreams to his brothers.

12:6 That is how your Lord will choose you and teach you the interpretation of dreams, and complete His blessing upon you and upon the house of Yaqoob (عليه السلام), just as He completed it earlier for your fathers, Ibrahim and Ishaq (عليهم السلام). Your Lord is indeed All Knowing, All Wise.'

The above verse confirms that Prophet Yaqoob (عليه السلام) was aware that Yusuf (عليه السلام) will be one among the prophets who will be taught the interpretations of the dreams by his Lord. And His Lord will complete His blessings upon him and on the house of Yaqoob (عليه السلام) as He completed it earlier on his grand father Is-haq (عليه السلام) and his great grand father Ibrahim (عليه السلام).

12:7 In (the story of) Yusuf (عليه السلام) and his brothers,  there are certainly signs for the seekers.

12:8 When they said surely Yusuf and his brother (عليهم السلام) are dearer to our father than we, even though we are a well-knit together. No doubt. Our father is manifestly absorbed in their love.

12:9 Let us kill Yusuf (عليه السلام) or cast him in some distant land so that we may get our father's exclusive affection; then play innocent.

12:10 One of them said : 'If you must do so, then do not kill Yusuf (عليه السلام), but throw him into an unused (dry) well.  Some passing caravan may rescue him.'

12:11 They said, ‘Father! Why is it that you do not trust us with Yusuf (عليه السلام)? We are indeed his well-wishers.

12:12 'Let him go with us tomorrow so that he may eat lots of fruits and play, and we will indeed take care of him.’

12:13 (Yaqoob  عليه السلام ) said, 'Indeed, it saddens me that you should take him, and I fear that a wolf would eat him while you are unaware of him.'

12:14 They said, 'If a wolf should eat him while we are a (well knit strong together),  then indeed we would be useless.

12:15 So when they took him away and planned to put him into a dark well, We revealed to Yusuf (عليه السلام), (a day will come when) you will surely inform them about this affair of theirs while they are not aware (who you are).

The revelation to Prophet Yusuf (عليه السلام) was to comfort him in this time of distress and to assure him that nothing would happen to him. It was also a clear indication of Yusuf (عليه السلام) role as a Prophet.

12:16 In the evening, they came weeping to their father.

12:17 They said, 'O Father, we had gone racing and left Yusuf (عليه السلام) with our things, and a wolf ate him. But you will not believe us even if we spoke truly.’

12:18 And they showed false blood on his shirt. He said, 'No, your nufoos have enticed you into something. Yet patience is graceful, and Allah is my resort against what you have claimed.

12:19 And there came a caravan, and they sent their water-drawer, who let down his bucket (in the well). ‘Good news!’ he said. ‘This is a young boy!’ So they concealed him as merchandise, and Allah knew best what they were doing.

12:20 And they sold him for a cheap price, a few dirhams, for they attached no value to him.

12:21  The man from Egypt who had bought him (Yusuf  عليه السلام) said to his wife, ‘Keep him in a  respectable way.  Maybe he will be useful to us, or we may adopt him as a son. Thus We established Yusuf (عليه السلام) in the land and that We might teach him the interpretation of dreams. Allah has  command of His affairs, but most people do not know.

12:22 When he reached maturity, We gave him judgement and knowledge, and thus We reward the virtuous.

12:23 And she, in whose house he was (living), sought to solicit him.  She closed the doors and said, 'Come, you.' He said, (I seek) the refuge of Allah. Indeed, he (your husband) is my master who has treated me honorably.  Indeed, wrongdoers will not succeed.

12:24 She certainly made for him; and he would have made for her (as well) had he not beheld the proof of his Lord.  So it was, that We might turn away from him all evil and indecency. He was indeed one of Our sincere servants.

12:25 They raced to the door, and she tore his shirt from behind, and they ran into her husband at the door.  She (blamed him and) said, ‘What is to be the retaliation of him who has evil intentions for your wife except imprisonment or a painful punishment?’

12:26 He (Prophet Yusuf عليه السلام) said, 'It was she who solicited me.' A witness of her own household testified : ‘If his shirt is torn from the front, she tells the truth and he lies.'

12:27 'But if his shirt is torn from behind, then she lies and he tells the truth.'

12:28 So when he (her husband) saw that his (Yusuf عليه السلام) shirt was torn from behind, he said, ‘This is  of you women’s plan! Certainly your plan is mighty.

12:29 (He said), Yusuf (عليه السلام) ignore this matter, and you,  my wife, plead for forgiveness for your sin, for you have indeed been wrong.'

12:30 (The news spread and) some of the towns' women (started) saying, ‘The chieftain’s wife has solicited her slave boy! He has captivated her love.  Indeed we see her to be in manifest error.'

12:31 When she heard about their accusations, she sent for them and arranged a meal, and gave each of them a knife, and asked (Yusuf - عليه السلام to) : 'Come out in front of them.' So when they saw him, they were wonder struck and (in their amazement) cut their hands (fingers), and said, Allah preserve us.  This is not a human being. This is but a noble angel!’

12:32 She said, 'That is the one about whom you blamed me.  And I certainly solicited him, but he firmly refused; and if he will not do what I order him, he will surely be imprisoned and will be  among the debased.'

12:33 He said, ‘My Lord! The prison is dearer to me than what they (the women) invite me.  If You do not turn away their plots from me, I may incline towards them (under pressure) and become one of the insensible persons.'

12:34 So his Lord answered  him and averted from him their plans. Indeed, He is the All Hearing, the All Knowing.

12:35 Then it appeared to their men after they had seen all the signs (of his innocence and women getting attracted to him), that they should confine him (in a prison) for some time.

12:36   There entered the prison two youths along with him (for some crimes). One of them said (to Yusuf عليه السلام), ‘I saw in my dream that I am crushing grapes.' The other said, ‘I saw in my dream that I am carrying bread on my head from which the birds are eating.' 'Inform us of its interpretation, for indeed we see you one among the  virtuous persons.'

12:37 He said, 'come to me before the meals are served to you,  I will inform you of their interpretations. This is among the things my Lord has taught me.   Indeed I renounce the creed of the people who have no faith in Allah and who disbelieve in the Hereafter.

12:38 I follow the religion of my fathers, Ibrahim, Ishaq and Yaqoob (عليهم السلام). It is not for us to ascribe any partner to Allah. That is by virtue of Allah’s grace upon us and upon all mankind, but most people are ungrateful.

12:39 O my prison mates! Are different masters better, or Allah, the One, the All Supreme?

12:40 You do not worship besides Him but (these are imaginary) names that you and your fathers have invented for which Allah has not sent down any authority. Sovereignty belongs only to Allah. He has commanded you to worship none except Him.  That is the upright religion, but most people are not aware.

12:41 O my prison mates! As for one of you, he will serve wine to his master, and as for the other, he will be crucified, and vultures will eat from his head.  The matter about which you inquire has (already) been decided.’

12:42 Then he said to the one whom he knew would be set free from, among the two : 'Mention me to your master.' But Satan caused him to forget mentioning to his master.  So he (Yusuf عليه السلام) remained in the prison for a few years.

12:43 (One day), the King saw a dream in which seven lean cows were eating seven fat cows and that, there were seven green ears (husk) of corn and seven dry ones. The King asked his nobles to interpret the meaning of his dream.

12:44 They said, (These are) confused nightmares, and we do not know the interpretation of nightmares.'

12:45 Said the one of the two who had been set free, remembering (Yusuf  عليه السلام) after a long time,  ‘I will inform you of its interpretation; so let me go (to meet Yusuf - عليه السلام) in the prison).

12:46 He said, ‘O truthful one Yusuf (عليه السلام), give us your opinion concerning seven fat cows who are eaten by seven lean ones, and seven green ears and (seven) others dry, that I may return to the people so that they may know (the truth of the matter).

12:47 He said, 'You will do cultivation for seven continuous years, then what you reap,  leave it in its ear, but a little which you may eat.

12:48 Then there will come seven years of hardship which will consume the grain you had laid up (preserved) for these years, except a little you may have stored away.

12:49 This will be followed by a year of rain, (there will be abundant crop) and people will press (the grapes to make wine).

12:50 (When the King heard this) he said, bring him to me.  But when the messenger came to him, (Yusuf - عليه السلام) said : 'Return to your lord and ask him, 'What happened to the women who cut their hands? Surely, Allah is well aware of their plot.'

12:51 The king asked the women, what was your affair when you solicited Yusuf (عليه السلام)?' They said, 'Allah preserve us, We know of no evil in him.' The prince’s wife said, ‘Now the truth has come to light! It was I who solicited him, and he is indeed telling the truth.'

12:52 (Then Yusuf - عليه السلام said, I asked for this inquiry) So that the Prince will know that I did not betray him in (his) absence and that Allah does not guide the plan of betrayers.
