The Cloaked One

Al-Muddaththir | Sura # 74 | 56 verses | Makkan

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful

74:1 O' you  (Prophet ﷺ ) covered up (in your cloak.)!

Muddaththir is one of the names with which Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) called his beloved Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم).

74:2 Get up and warn (all)

74:3 Proclaim the greatness of your Lord.

74:4 Cleanse and keep your clothes purified.

74:5 Keep  away from uncleanliness,

74:6 Do not expect any gain (in return) for favors to others (except from your Lord).

74:7 Endure (adversity of people) with patience, for the sake of your Lord.

74:8 (Warn everyone saying) When the day the trumpet sounds,

74:9 surely, that Day will be a hard Day.

74:10 Not at all an easy day for the unbelievers.

74:11 Leave Me and the one (Al-Walid Ibn al-Mughirah) whom I created, alone.

74:12 And to whom I have given  abundant wealth,

74:13 and sons to stand by his side.

74:14 And made life very easy for him.

The above verses refers to a prominent Chieftain of Quraish al-Walid Ibn Mughaira.

It is related by Ikrimah from Ibn Abbas (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) that Walid ibn al-Mughirah went to the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) and listened to the verses of Quran and it looked his heart softened listening to it. When Abu Jahl heard about it, he went to him and said : 'O uncle, your clan want to collect money to give it to you, for you went to (Prophet) Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) exposing yourself to his message'. He said : 'The Quraish know it well that I am among its wealthiest'. Abu Jahl said, 'then say something about him which will let your people know that you condemn and dislike him'. He said : 'But what shall I say? By Allah, there is not a man among you who is more knowledgeable about poetry and its composition than me. By Allah, what he says (the Quran) does not resemble any poetry. By Allah, the speech which he utters is sweet and graceful, fruitful at the top, copious at the bottom; it has the upper hand and nothing has the upper hand over it. But let me think about what I shall say about it. 'Then he said : 'This (Quran) is nothing but the magic from the past'. (verse 24), which he simply learnt from others'.

In other narrations, it is stated that Al-Walid ibn al-Mughirah used to visit the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) and Abu Bakr (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) regularly and the Quraish suspected that he will accept Islam. Abu Jahl then said to him : ‘The Quraish claim that you visit (Prophet) Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) and Abu Bakr Ibn Abi Quhafah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) to share food with them’. Al-Walid said to the Quraish : ‘You are people of noble lineages and sound minds, but you claim that (Prophet) Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) is mad. Have you ever seen him seized by a bout of madness?’ They said : ‘No!’ He said : ‘And you claim that he is a soothsayer; have you ever seen him soothsaying?’ They said : ‘No!’ He said : ‘You claim that he is a poet; have you ever heard him utter poetry?’ They said : ‘No!’ He said: ‘You claim that he is a liar; have you ever caught him lying?’ They said : ‘No!’ The Quraish said to al-Walid : ‘What is he, then?’ He thought for a while, looked and frowned and then said : ‘He is nothing but a sorcerer’. Then the verses of Quran were revealed about him.

Al-Walid was very rich and a famous poet of Arabia and knew the truthfulness of the Quran and of Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) but just to appease his fellow Makkans and to safeguard his Chieftainship, he lied to his people.

74:15 Yet, he (greedily) desires that I should give him still more.

74:16 By no means! Because he has stubbornly denied Our revelations.

74:17 Soon, I will impose a dreadful torment upon him.

74:18 Indeed, he thought and deliberated.

74:19 So may he be destroyed (for) how he deliberated.

74:20 Then may he be destroyed (for) how he deliberated.

74:21 Then he looked (all around to create a psychological atmosphere through his expressions).

74:22 Then he viewed with displeasure in a bad tempered way.

74:23 Then he turned back in arrogance.

74:24 And said : 'This (Quran) is nothing but the magic from the past.

74:25 This is nothing but the word of a human being.

74:26 Soon I will burn him in Hell.

74:27 And what will make you realize what Hell is?

74:28 It does not spare (any sinner), nor does it leave (anything not burnt)!

74:29 It scorches people's skin.

74:30 Over it are nineteen (angels as  keepers of Hell).

74:31 We have chosen to appoint the angels as wardens over Hell, and We let their number be a trial for the unbelievers. So that, those given the scriptures may believe, and the believers may increase in their belief. Both; those given the scriptures,  and the believers, may not entertain doubts. Yet, those with disease in their hearts, and the unbelievers, would still say, 'What does Allah mean by this example?' Thus, Allah leads astray whom He wants, and guides whom He wants. No one knows the soldiers of Allah except He.  This is nothing but a reminder for the people.

74:32 But no! By the moon,

74:33 and the night as it retreats,

74:34 and by the dawn when it brightens,

74:35 surely, it (Hell) is one of the greatest signs,

74:36 a warning to human beings,

74:37 to any of you that chooses to go forward (by righteous deeds), or remain behind (in sins).

74:38 Every person is held in pledge for all that he has done.

74:39 Except the people (righteous ones) of the right hand,

74:40 who will be in Gardens, asking one another

74:41 about the wicked.

74:42 (They will ask the people in Hell) 'What has landed you in Hell?'

74:43 They will reply, 'We were not of those who prayed,

74:44 we did not feed the poor.

74:45 And we used to indulge in vain talk with those who indulged (in mocking the believers).

74:46 And we used to deny the Day of Judgement,

74:47 until there came to us the certainty (death).

74:48 So the pleas of intercessors will be of no benefit to them.

74:49 Then what is wrong with them (disbelievers) that they turn away from receiving the admonition?

74:50 As if they were panicked donkeys,

74:51 fleeing from the lion

74:52 In fact, each one of them wishes to be given a (personal) letter (from Allah) for all (to read).

74:53 But no! In fact, they do not fear the Hereafter.

74:54 Nay, surely, this (Quran) is an admonition.

74:55 Whoever wants, may heed (its warning).

74:56 But they will not heed unless Allah so wills. He is Worthy of being feared, and He is the One Who forgives!
