In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful

حم١

42:1 Ha-meem

42:2 Ain-Seen-Qaaf

'Ha-meem' and 'Ain-Seen-Qaaf' are known as ‘Solemn Verses' (Ayaat-e-Muqatta'at - آیاتِ مقطعات).

Fourteen Arabic alphabets have been used, in varied combinations, in 14 ‘Solemn Verses' (Ayaat-e-Muqatta'at - آیاتِ مقطعات) in the form of initials of 29 Chapters (سورة) of holy Quran. Ha-meem ( حم ) and Ain-Seen-Qaaf (عسق) are from them.

Since Quran is 'Mubeen' (الْمُبِينِ); its description is clear and manifest. The meanings of all the verses of Quran, including 'Solemn Verses' (آیاتِ مقطعات) are surely known to its principle addressee, ie., Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم). It is also likely that Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) has informed the meanings of these Verses to some of his Sahabah and Awliya Allah.

We believe in whatever is meant by the 'Solemn Verses' (آیاتِ مقطعات) by Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) and His Apostle Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم).

Since we have been commanded to read the Quran carefully and try to understand the significance of every verse of the Quran, we do ponder over these verses. And when we think, by focusing our attention towards Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) and His Apostle Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) for guidance, it comes to our mind that the 'Solemn Verses' (آیاتِ مقطعات) are actually the 'Solemn Titles of Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) given by Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) throughout the Quran. Our understanding is based on the fact that Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) has addressed Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) in the Quran by specific names, like Muzzammil (مزمل - O' beloved who covers self in a coverlet), Muddassir (مدثر - O' beloved, who covers self in a bed sheet). With this understanding, it is most likely that Prophet’s (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) other names / titles have been mentioned in Quran by denoting certain initials/alphabets.

42:3 Thus, Allah, the All Mighty, All-Wise sends His revelation to you, (O' Prophet  ﷺ), as He sent to other Apostles before you.

42:4 To Him belongs everything in the heavens and everything on earth. He is the Most High and Great.

42:5 (In submission and in  awe of Him) the skies nearly burst apart, one above the other. And the angels glorify the praises of their Lord (incessantly), and seek forgiveness for those on earth.   Surely Allah alone is the All Forgiving, Most Merciful.

42:6 Those who have taken protectors other than Him, are watched over by Allah. And (O' Prophet  ﷺ  ignore them). You are not a trustee over them.

42:7 Thus We have revealed to you (O' Prophet ﷺ) this Quran in Arabic so that you may warn the residents of the mother of cities (Makkah) and whoever is around it. Warn them of the Day of Assembling;  there is no doubt about it; when a group (believers) will go to Paradise and a group (disbelievers, will be thrown) in the blazing fire.

42:8 If Allah had willed, He would have made them one nation, but He admits whom He wills to His Mercy. The wrongdoers will not have any protector or helper.

42:9 How can they take protectors besides Him? Allah alone is the Protector. He (alone) gives life to the dead. He has power over all the things.

42:10 (O' Prophet  ﷺ), tell them : Whatever the subject of your dispute is, its Judgment belongs to Allah. Such is Allah,  My Lord, in Him I have put my trust, and to Him I turn in repentance,

42:11 (He is) the Originator of the heavens and the earth. He has made for you spouses from among yourselves, and (made) mates for cattle (as well), multiplying you (both). There is nothing like Him.  He is the All Hearing, All Seeing.

42:12 To Him belong the keys of the heavens and the earth. He gives abundantly to whom He pleases and sparingly to whom He wills. He is the Knower of all things.

42:13 He has ordained for you the same religion (Islam) which He ordained for Nooh (عليه السلام), and which He has revealed to you (O' Prophet  ﷺ), and which He ordained for Ibrahim, Musa and Isa (عليهم السلام) (enjoining) : 'You should uphold the faith, and not get divided into (sects).'  What you call the polytheists to,  is unbearable for them.  Allah chooses for Himself whoever He wills, and guides to Himself whoever turns (to Him).

42:14 They were not divided till after knowledge had come to them through selfish transgressions among themselves. Had it not been for a word (to defer punishment), that went forth before from your Lord  for an appointed term, the matter would have been settled between them.   Surely, those who were made to inherit the Scripture after them,  are in serious doubt concerning it (the Quran).

42:15 Therefore, call them to Islam, stay firm on the right path as you are commanded,  and do not follow their vain desires. Tell them : 'I believe in whatever Allah has revealed from the Book and I am commanded to do justice between you. Allah is Our Lord and your Lord.  We are responsible for Our deeds,  and you for yours. Let there be no dispute among us. Allah will bring us all together on the Day of Judgment and decide as to who is right and who is wrong, and to Him is the final return.

42:16 Those who dispute concerning Allah after accepting (obedience) to Him, their dispute is futile in the sight of their Lord, on them is the wrath (of Allah), and for them there will be a severe punishment.

42:17 It is Allah Who has revealed the Book with the truth, and truthful religion, and trustworthy Apostle You never know, perhaps the Hour is near.

42:18 Only they who do not believe in it (Resurrection) wish to hasten it;  but those who believe,  are in fear of it, for they know it to be true.  Surely those who are in doubt about the Hour (of Judgement) are wandering far astray.

42:19 Allah is gracious to His servants, and bestows favors on whosoever He wills. He is Omnipotent Almighty.

42:20 Whoever desires the fruits of the Hereafter, We shall add to his fruit. As for him who desires the fruits of this world, We shall give him of these, but he will have no share in the Hereafter.

42:21 Or do they have partners (of Allah), who have instituted for them (wrongful things) in religion which Allah has not allowed?   Had it not been a decisive word (the Day of Judgment), the matter would have been judged between them? Surely, for the wrongdoers, there is a painful punishment.

42:22 You will see (on the Day of Judgement) that the wrongdoers will fear for what they have earned, and it (the punishment) will befall them. While those who believe and do righteous deeds will be in the flowering meadows of the gardens (Paradise) and will receive for them what they wish from their Lord. That is (truly) the greatest bounty.

42:23 Such a blessing is the good news which Allah gives to His servants who believe and do good deeds. (O Prophet  ﷺ), say to them : 'I do not ask you any recompense except your love for my  close relatives (Ahl-e-Bait -  رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہم اجمعين)'.  He who does a good deed shall be repaid many times over.   Surely Allah is All Forgiving, Most Appreciative.

The love of Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) and his Ahle-Bait-e-At-Haar is part of Iman.

It is in Quran - النَّبِيُّ أَوْلَى بِالْمُؤْمِنِينَ مِنْ أَنْفُسِهِمْ وَأَزْوَاجُهُ أُمَّهَاتُهُمْ [ The Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) has a more right on the believers than their own selves, and his wives are their mothers.] (Al-Ahzab - 6)

Two important things have been mentioned in the above verse, as follows.

(i) The Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) has a more right on the believers than their own selves.

(ii) The wives of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) are the mothers of the believers.

What is the meaning of 'the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) has more right on the believers than their own selves.?'

It means that believers should love the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) more than their own selves. His decision in collective and individual issues of the believers are binding upon them even if they are unable to comprehend it.

(i) It is in Quran - يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا أَطِيعُوا اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ وَلَا تَوَلَّوْا عَنْهُ وَأَنتُمْ تَسْمَعُونَ [ O' Believers, obey Allah and His Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) and do not turn from him while you hear (his order). (Al-Anfaal - 20)

(ii) It is in Hadith -It is narrated on the authority of Anas (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said : 'None of you will have faith till he loves me more than his father, his children and all mankind. (Bukhari)

(iii) It is in Hadith - It is narrated on the authority of Abdullah bin Hisham (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) that he said : We were with the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) and he was holding the hand of 'Umar bin Al-Khattab (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ). 'Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said to Him, O' Allah's Apostle (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) you are dearer to me than everything except my own self.' The Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said, 'No, by Him in Whose Hand my soul is, (you will not have complete Iman) till I am dearer to you than your own self.' Then Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said to him, 'However, now, by Allah, you are dearer to me than my own self.' The Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said, 'Now, O' Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) (you are a true believer). (Bukhari)

(iii) It is in Hadith It is narrated on the authority of Anas (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) that : A man asked the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) about the Hour, saying, 'When will the Hour be?' The Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said : 'What have you prepared for it?' The man said, 'nothing, except that I love Allah and His Apostle The Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said, 'You will be with those whom you love.' (Anasؓ continued) We had never been so glad as we were on hearing that saying of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم). Therefore, I love the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم), Abu Bakr (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) and 'Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ), and I hope that I will be with them because of my love for them, though my deeds are not similar to theirs. (Bukhari)

What is the meaning of 'the wives of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) are the mothers of the believers?'

It means that the love and respect of Ummaha-tul-Momineen (امهات المومنين رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہم اجمعين) has to be more than the love of the biological mothers of the believers and it is an indication and fulfillment of your love of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم).

It is in Hadith - 'The (believing) mother is in the middle of the doors of Paradise.' (Ahmed)

It is in Hadith - The Paradise is under the feet of (the believing) mothers. (Nasai)

Similarly, love of other members of the Ahle Bait-e-At haar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہم اجمعين), is a requirement and an indication and fulfillment of your love of Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم).

It is in Hadith - Safiyyah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) the daughter of Shaybah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) narrates that Ummul Momineen Aisha (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) said that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) came out one morning wearing a cloak which had camel saddles woven on to it with black wool. Then Hasan Ibn Ali (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) came and the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) took him under the cloak, then Husain (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) came and entered beneath it with the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم). Then Fatimah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا) came and the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) took her under the cloak. Next Ali (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) came and the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) also included him beneath it. Then the Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) recited the verse - إِنَّمَا يُرِيدُ اللَّهُ لِيُذْهِبَ عَنْكُمُ الرِّجْسَ أَهْلَ الْبَيْتِ وَيُطَهِّرَكُمْ تَطْهِيرًا [ O' members of the (Prophet’s ﷺ) family (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہم اجمعين), Allah only intends to keep (the causes of) evil away from you and purify you completely. (al-Ahzaab - 33).

References - (i) Muslim, (ii) Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah, (iii) Ahmad, (iv) Musnad Ibn Rahawayh, (v) Al-Mustadrak, al-Hakim, (vi) Sunan al-Kubra, Baihaqi, (vii) Tafseer-e-Tabari, (viii) Maalim-ut-Tanzil, Baghawi, etc.

It is in Hadith Umar bin Abi Salamah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) who was brought up by the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) narrates that when the verse - إِنَّمَا يُرِيدُ اللَّهُ لِيُذْهِبَ عَنْكُمُ الرِّجْسَ أَهْلَ الْبَيْتِ وَيُطَهِّرَكُمْ تَطْهِيرًا [ O' members of the (Prophet’s ﷺ) family (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہم اجمعين), Allah only intends to keep (the causes of) evil away from you and purify you completely.] (al-Ahzaab - 33) was revealed to the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) at the home of Ummul Momineen Umm Salamah (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہا), he called Fatimah, Hasan and Husain (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہم) and covered them with a cloak. The Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) also covered Ali (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) who was behind him and then said, 'Oh Allah! These are my Ahle Baith so keep impurity away from them and totally purify them.

References - (i) Tirmidhi, (ii) Ahmad, (iii) Bayhaqi, (iv) Hakim, (v) Tabarani, etc.

The above Ahadith confirm that, in addition to Ummaha-tul-Momineen, Hadhrat Ali, Fatima, Hassan and Hussain (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہم اجمعين) are included in the Prophet's (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) household.

There are some references that include, Aqil, Jafar, Abbas and Salman Farsi (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہم) within the purview of the household of Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم).

You cannot claim your love for Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) while you accuse, abuse or blame any member of Prophet's (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) house hold like the way Shias, Salafis, Deobandis, Ahle-Hadith, Kharijis and their like minded groups do.

Shias wrongfully claim that Ummaha-tul-Momineen (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہم) are not part of the Prophet's (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) household. This kind of belief is denial of Quranic verses and Ahadith.

The above verse is also translated as ' ‘I do not want anything from you except to be kind to me for my Kinship with you.’

It is in Hadith - Ibn Abbas (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) narrated that he was asked about the verse - [Except your love for my close relatives (Ahl-e-Bait - رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہم اجمعين).] (Ash-Shura - 23), Sa`id bin Zubair (who was present there) said, it means here (to show what is due for) the relatives of Muhammad On that Ibn Abbas (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said, you have hurried in giving the answer! There was no branch of the tribe of Quraish, but the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) had relatives therein. The Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said, ‘I do not want anything from you except to be kind to me for my Kinship with you.’ (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Bk 65, Hadith # 340)

42:24 Do they claim that he, (the Prophet  ﷺ), has fabricated a lie about Allah? (No, their claim is false as you, O' Prophet  ﷺ are sent to save people from the blazing fire).  If Allah wants, He can place a (shining) seal (for Hidaya of the disbelievers) on your heart (to reflect the truth of your message on their hearts) as Allah wipes out the absurd and the false and  validates the truth from His command.  Indeed, He is Aware of everything buried in the chest (of people).

42:25 He is the One Who accepts repentance from His servants and pardons (their) sins. And He knows whatever you (all) do.

42:26 He answers the prayers of those who believe and do good deeds and gives them even more out of His bounty. As for the unbelievers, they shall have severe punishment.

42:27 Were Allah to expand the provision to His servants (en masse), they would have committed tyranny on earth. But He sends down whatever He wills in due measures. He is, well Acquainted and Fully Aware of His servants.

42:28 It is He Who sends down rain even after they have lost all hope, and spreads His Mercy.   He Alone is the Praiseworthy Guardian.

42:29 Among His signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the living creatures that He has spread in both of them.  And He is capable of gathering them all together whenever He wants.

42:30 Whatever afflictions befalls you, it is because of what your hands have earned. He pardons from much (of your misdeeds).

42:31 You can never escape (from Him) on earth, nor do you have any protector or helper besides Allah.

42:32 And among His signs are (huge) ships, like hills (floating) in the sea.

42:33 If He wills, He can cause the wind to settle and then they would become motionless on the back (of the sea).  Surely, in this example there are signs for everyone (who is) patient and grateful.

42:34 Or He may destroy them (by drowning) because of that which their people have earned. He pardons much (of their evil deeds).

42:35 Those who dispute about Our revelations should know that there is no escape for them.

42:36 Whatever you have been given is only the provision of this life. But that which is with Allah is better and more enduring for those who believe and trust in their Lord;

42:37 (and) avoid major sins and shameful deeds, (and) forgive (others), even when they are angry;

42:38 who respond to their Lord, establish prayer, conduct their affairs by mutual consultation, and donate from what We have provided them;

42:39 and those who, when tyranny strikes them, they defend themselves (against the tyrannical people).

42:40 The retribution for a bad deed is one like it, but whoever forgives and makes peace will have his reward with Allah. He certainly does not like those who do wrong.

42:41 Those who avenge themselves when wronged cannot be blamed.

42:42 Blame lies on those who wrong others and transgress in the land without any justification. Those will have a painful punishment.

42:43 But, to bear patiently and forgive is indeed an (admirable) act of courage, and a virtue.

42:44 Whomever Allah leads astray has no guardian apart from Him. You will see the wrongdoers, when they sight the punishment, saying, 'Is there any way for a retreat?'

42:45 As they are exposed to the Fire, you will see them humbled from humiliation, glancing around covertly. While those who believed will say, 'The losers are those who lost themselves and their kin on the Day of Resurrection.' Verily, the unjust are in an lasting punishment.

42:46 They will have no protectors to help them against Allah. And whoever Allah leaves to stray, for them there is no way.

42:47 Accept the command of your Lord before there comes a Day from Allah that cannot be averted.  On that Day there shall be no shelter for you, and none can change your predicament.

42:48 But if they turn away, We did not send you (O' Prophet ﷺ) as their guardian. Your only responsibility is to deliver the message. When We let a man taste Our mercy, he rejoices in it; but if harm afflicts him for what his hands have done, then man turns to denial.

42:49 To Allah belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth. He creates whatsoever He wills, bestows daughters on whosoever He will, and gives sons to whom He choose.

42:50 or grants both, sons and daughters, (to whoever He wills), and leaves whoever He wills infertile. He is indeed All Knowing, Omnipotent.

42:51 It is not (possible) to any human being that Allah should speak (directly) unless (it be) by inspiration, or from behind a veil, or by sending an Apostle to reveal by His permission what He wills.  Surely, He is High and Wise.

42:52 And so We have sent to you (O' Prophet  ﷺ) a Soul (Hadhrat Jibreel  عليه السلام) by Our command (with revelations). You did not know of (this) Book and faith (before).  But We have made it a light, by which We guide whoever We will of Our servants. And you are truly leading (all) to the Straight Path,

42:53 the path of Allah, to Whom belong everything in the heaven and on earth! Beware, all matters come before Allah (for decision).
