Saad

Saad | Sura # 38 | 88 verses | Makkan

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful

38:1 Saad. (I swear) By the Qur'an, that contains all that one ought to know.

'Saad' is known as ‘Solemn Verse' (Ayat-e-Muqatta'at - آیتِ مقطعات).

Fourteen Arabic alphabets have been used, in varied combinations, in 14 ‘Solemn Verses' (Ayaat-e-Muqatta'at - آیاتِ مقطعات) in the form of initials of 29 Chapters (سورة) of holy Quran. Saad ( ص ) is one of them.

Since Quran is 'Mubeen' (الْمُبِينِ); its description is clear and manifest. The meanings of all the verses of Quran, including 'Solemn Verses' (آیاتِ مقطعات) are surely known to its principle addressee, ie., Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم). It is also likely that Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) has informed the meanings of these Verses to some of his Sahabah and Awliya Allah.

We believe in whatever is meant by the 'Solemn Verses' (آیاتِ مقطعات) by Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) and His Apostle Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم).

Since we have been commanded to read the Quran carefully and try to understand the significance of every verse of the Quran, we do ponder over these verses. And when we think, by focusing our attention towards Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) and His Apostle Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) for guidance, it comes to our mind that the 'Solemn Verses' (آیاتِ مقطعات) are actually the 'Solemn Titles of Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) given by Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) throughout the Quran. Our understanding is based on the fact that Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) has addressed Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) in the Quran by specific names, like Muzzammil (مزمل - O' beloved who covers self in a coverlet), Muddassir (مدثر - O' beloved, who covers self in a bed sheet). With this understanding, it is most likely that Prophet’s (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) other names / titles have been mentioned in Quran by denoting certain initials/alphabets.

38:2 (This is the truth),  yet the disbelievers are (entrenched) in arrogance and opposition.

38:3 How many generations have We destroyed before them? They cried out when there was no longer time for escape!

38:4 Now, they are astonished that a warner has come to them from among themselves. And the disbelievers say, 'This is a magician, a liar'

38:5 'Has he made (all) gods into One god.  This is indeed a strange thing!'

38:6 Their chiefs go about saying (one another), 'Go home and hold on to your gods staunchly. This thing is (purposely) designed (to uproot you from this land).'

38:7 'We have never heard of this in the latest religion (Christianity). This (concept of One God) is nothing but a made-up tale. (Even the Christians subscribe to trinity).'

38:8 'Why was the (divine) advice revealed to him (and not to us)? (And why he was chosen) among us?   In fact, they are in doubt about  My Reminder. And (they do so because) they have not yet tasted My punishment.

38:9 Or do they own and control the treasures of the Mercy of your Lord, the Almighty, the Giver (of all bounties).

38:10 Or (is it because) the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and everything in between, belongs to them? Then, let them climb their way (to heaven, if their claim is true).

38:11 They are no more than a routed band of (disintegrated) parties (awaiting a defeat, as certain as the defeat of the hordes of old times, who rejected the earlier Apostles).

38:12 Before them the people of Nooh (عليه السلام) denied, and the A'ad, and the Pharaoh of formidable strongholds,

38:13 and Thamud, and the people of Loot (عليه السلام), and the residents of the wood (Madian); such were the groups of people,

38:14 each of them denied the Apostles, therefore the retribution was justified.

38:15 These 'pagans' are awaiting nothing but a single Shriek (sound of a massive blast that will kill them all) that cannot be stopped.

38:16 They say (in a taunting way), 'Our Lord! Hasten for us our share (of the punishment) before the Day of Reckoning.'

38:17 Be patient (O Prophet  ﷺ) with what they say.  And remember Our servant, Dawood (عليه السلام), the man of strength (and Kingdom). Indeed, he (constantly) turned (to Allah).

38:18 Surely, We made the mountains to glorify Our praises with him (Dawood  عليه السلام) in the evening and at day break.

38:19 And the birds, too, with all their flocks, join in singing with him.

38:20 We strengthened his kingdom, and gave him wisdom and sound judgment.

38:21 Has the story of the two plaintiffs, who scaled the (wall of Dawood  عليه السلام) sanctuary, reached you (O Prophet  ﷺ)?

38:22 When they reached Dawood (عليه السلام), he was alarmed, (but) they said, 'Do not be alarmed. (We are) two disputants. One of us has wronged the other, so judge between us with truth, and do not be unjust, and guide us to the right way.

38:23 One of them said, 'This, here, is my brother (in religion). He had ninety-nine lambs, while I had only one lamb.  Yet he said to me, 'Hand over your one lamb to me.' He persuaded (and prevailed over) me with his (eloquent) speech.'

38:24 (Dawood  عليه السلام) said, 'He certainly wronged you by asking for your lamb to join his herd (of ninety-nine lambs). Indeed, most friends and family members often treat each other unjustly, except those who believe and perform righteous deeds.  Such ones (however) are few.' And then Dawood (عليه السلام) thought, that We had put him through a test (by this incident).  So, he sought forgiveness of his Lord. He fell down prostrate and turned to Him in repentance.

The above is the 'Verse of Sajda' (آیت سجدہ). If someone is reading it alone, should do prostration (سجدة) alone. If it is read loudly in an audience, the reciter and all the listeners should do 'Prostration of Recitation' (Sajda-e-Tilaawah - سجدة التلاوة) individually.

The Prostration can be done in sitting or standing position. In the Hanafi school of thought, 'Prostration of Recitation' (Sajda-e-Tilaawah - سجدة التلاوة) is obligatory (Fardh). With Shafii and Maliki, it is Sunnah.

It is in Hadith 'When you have recited a verse requiring Sajdah-e-Tilaawaah, you should go down for Sajdah with Allahu-Akbar and rise from Sajdah with Allahu-Akbar, which may be performed sitting, though it is preferable to prostrate oneself from the standing position (Abu Dawood)

Have the intention to do Prostration of recitation (سجدة التلاوة). The place where you are reading/reciting Quran should be clean. Turn your face towards Qibla, say (quietly) Allahu Akbar, go into prostration once, recite the 'Tasbih of Sajdah' 'Subhana Rabbi al-A'alaa' (سبحان ربّي الاعلى ) at least 3 times and raise from the Sajda saying Allahu Akbar.

38:25 So We forgave him. He has surely a high rank with Us and an excellent place of final return.

38:26 ( We said), 'O Dawood  عليه السلام), We have certainly appointed you Our Vicegerent on the land.  Therefore, settle the disputes between people with justice. Do not follow the desires and whims (of the people) that may lead you away from Allah´s path.  Indeed, there is a severe punishment for those who stray from the path of Allah, because they forget the day of reckoning.

38:27 We did not create the heaven, the earth and everything in it without a purpose.   (In fact) those who do not believe, think otherwise. Misery is for the unbelievers. They will be in Fire (forever).

38:28 Should We treat those who believe and do good deeds, on par with those who create mischief in the earth? Should We treat the righteous,  on par the sinners? (The answers is obvious, no.)

38:29 (The Quran is) a blessed Book which We have revealed to you (O Prophet  ﷺ) so that the people of understanding may reflect on its verses, and those who understand, become mindful.

38:30 To Dawood (عليه السلام) We gave (a son), Sulaiman (عليه السلام). What a wonderful servant (of Allah was Sulaiman عليه السلام)!  Indeed he was one repeatedly turning towards (Allah).

38:31 (Mention the incident) When the well-trained horses of the highest breed were displayed before him in one afternoon,

38:32 and he said : 'Surely I did love the worldly wealth instead of remembering my Lord (during Asr time)', till the time was over, and the sun had hidden in the veil (of night),

38:33 'Bring them back to me'. (And when the horses were brought back) He began to slash their legs and napes (with his sword).

38:34 And indeed, We did test Sulaiman (عليه السلام) and We placed on his throne a body (so he lost his kingdom for a while), then he did return (to Allah with repentance, and to his throne by the Grace of Allah).

There are differences of opinions among scholars as to what happened and what kind of body was placed on his throne and after how many days Sulaiman (عليه السلام) regained his Kingdom back.

From the above verse, it is clear that it was a test for Prophet Sulaiman (عليه السلام). When he turned towards Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) in repentance, everything was restored back. Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) granted his supplication and he was given a Kingdom, the like of which is not to be given to anyone in the world.

38:35 He said : 'My Lord! Forgive me, and bestow upon me a kingdom such as shall not be given to anyone after me. You are indeed the Giver (of all bounties).'

38:36 So We gave him control over the wind.   Upon his orders, it gently used to blow towards the region of his choice.

38:37 And (We subjected to him) Jinns, who could build (buildings) and dive (in the oceans).

38:38 and others that were bound in shackles.

The mischievous Satans among the Jinns were imprisoned by Sulaiman (عليه السلام) so that they were not in a position to create trouble on Earth.

38:39 (We said to Sulaiman  عليه السلام) : 'This is Our gift, so you spend or withhold, no account will be asked.'

38:40 Surely he is in proximity with Us and will have an excellent place of final abode.

38:41 And remember Our servant (Prophet) Ayyub (عليه السلام), when he called : My Lord, Satan has afflicted me with hardship and suffering.'

38:42 (We responded), 'Strike (the ground) with your foot; here is a (spring for you) for cool bath and drink.'

38:43 And We restored to him his family and many more with them, as a grace from Ourselves, and (it is) a reminder (about Allah's bestowal) for the people of understanding.

38:44 (And We told him), 'Take in your hand a bundle of (thin) grass, and strike (your wife) with it, and fulfill your oath (you made during your sickness). What an excellent servant (he was)!  Indeed, he (constantly) turned (to Allah).

BRIEF HISTORY

Prophet Ayyub (عليه السلام) was the descendant of Prophet Ishaq (عليه السلام). He lived in Syria. He was very humble and used to glorify Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) devotedly. Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) had provided him with many bounties, like big house, lands, farms, live stock, servants and many children.

Then Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) tested him. He was striped of all his wealth and possessions. But, it did not matter to Ayyub (عليه السلام) as he remained committed to the glorification of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ). Then Ayyub (عليه السلام) lost all his children, one by one. Then he lost his health as he was afflicted with a loathsome disease with severe pain. The disease worsened day by day to an extent that people of his community abandoned him outside the town where no one visited him except his wife who remained with him through all these trials. She worked in the homes of people to make a living and to look after him who was abandoned alone. Even in this condition, Ayyub (عليه السلام) did not loose heart and remained steadfast in the glorification of Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ).

Ayyub (عليه السلام) remained in this state for about 18 years. Then one day he prayed 'My Lord, Satan has afflicted me with hardship and suffering'. And Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) responded by saying 'Strike (the ground) with your foot; here is a (spring for you) for cool bath and drink.' After he took bath from that spring, Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) removed all afflictions from him and he became as sound as he had been previously. His wife was not there at that time. When she returned to him, she did not recognize her husband standing in front of her hale and hearty. She asked him, 'May Allah bless you, have you seen the Prophet of Allah who was ill here? And by Allah, I have not seen a man, more similar to him when he was healthy, than you. Prophet Ayyub (عليه السلام) said 'it is me only'. Later Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) returned all his wealth, possessions and his children.

It is reported that Prophet Ayyub's (عليه السلام) wife had committed some mistake during his illness and he vowed that she will be called to account for that. When he regained health, Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) asked him to strike his wife with a bundle of thin grass leaves as fulfillment of his oath.

38:45 And remember Our servants Ibrahim, Ishaq and Yaqoob (عليهم السلام). They all had the insight and the strength of character.

38:46 Verily We did choose them for a special (purpose);  proclaiming the Message of the Hereafter.

38:47 And indeed they are among the best of the chosen ones in Our view.

38:48 And remember Ismail, Al-Yasaa and Dhul-Kifl  (عليهم السلام). They are all among the most pious.

38:49 All this is a remembrance (of the excellence of those We have mentioned).  Surely for those who take heed for themselves is an excellent place of return,

38:50 the Gardens of Eternity, whose gates will be opened for them.

38:51 In which they will recline (on thrones), calling therein for many a fruit and drink,

38:52 And with them will be pure, chaste-eyed spouses, well-matched.

38:53 This is what you are promised for the Day of reckoning.

38:54 Certainly, such is Our bestowal for you! It will never run out!

38:55 All this (is for the believers). But for the transgressors, an evil resort awaits them.

38:56 (For Unbelievers is) Hell, where they will burn. What an evil place to rest!

38:57 Such will be the reward for the wrongdoers. So they will taste scalding water and pus.

38:58 And other similar punishments.

38:59 (The misguided leaders will say to one another),  'Here is a crowd (of followers) being thrown in with us. They are not welcome, (for) they (too) will burn in the Fire.'

38:60 The followers will say : 'In fact, it is you who will have no welcome. It is you who brought this upon us. What an evil place of rest!'

38:61 (They will say), 'Our Lord! Whoever brought this upon us, double their punishment in the Fire.'

38:62 (The tyrants will say (to each other) : 'What is the matter with us that we don’t see those whom we considered to be lowly?

38:63 'Whom we used to take in mockery? Or is it that (they are here with us, but) our eyes have missed them (just as we turned our eyes from them in contempt in the world)?'

38:64 Surely, this is the very truth,  the people in the Hellfire will argue just like that.

38:65 Say (O' Prophet  ﷺ), 'I am only a warner, and there is no other god but Allah, the one, the omnipotent,

38:66 the Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is in between them, the Mighty, the Forgiving.'

38:67 Say, (O' Prophet  ﷺ), 'this (Quran) is momentous news,

38:68 from which you (pagans) are turning away.'

38:69 (Say) : 'I had no knowledge of the exalted angels when they argued (about the creation of Adam

38:70 What is revealed to me is that,  I am only sent with a clear warning.'

38:71 (Remember, O Prophet  ﷺ) When your Lord said to the angels, 'I am going to create a human being from clay.

38:72 And when I have fully formed him and have breathed into him of My spirit, Fall down in prostration in front of him.'

38:73 So the angels prostrated altogether,

38:74 except Satan, he was proud and was one of the disbelievers.'

38:75 Allah said : 'O Iblees! What prevented you from prostrating  to the one whom I have created with both of My own hands? Are you too arrogant, or do you think that you are one of the exalted ones?'

Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلّ) described Himself with majestic (جلالی) and graceful (جمالی) attributes, therefore He created this Universe on fear and delight (اُنس). Similar is the situation will all the attributes which are associated with Allah and His names (epithets). The complete Human (انسان الكامل) is comprehensiveness of all facts (حقايق) and individual natures (مفردات) of the Universe who was created with the attention of His majestic and graceful attributes (صفاتِ جلال و جمال). Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلّ) interpreted it by His two hands in the above verse with which Adam (عليه السلام) was created.

38:76 He said, 'I am better than him. You created me from fire and created him from clay.'

38:77 (Allah) said : 'Then get out from here, for surely, you are accursed,

38:78 and surely! My curse shall be on you till the Day of Resurrection.'

38:79 Iblees said : 'My Lord, then give me respite till the Day of Resurrection.'

38:80 (Allah) said : 'Surely, you are of those allowed respite,

38:81 Till the appointed day.'

38:82 (Satan) said : 'By Your might, I will surely mislead them all,

38:83 except Your chosen servants among them.'

38:84 Allah  said, 'This is the truth, I speak only the truth,

38:85 I will fill up Hell with you,  together with those who follow you.'

38:86 (O Prophet  ﷺ), tell them : 'I do not ask you any recompense for conveying this Message, nor do I pretend to be what I am not.

38:87 'It (the Quran) really is a reminder for all the worlds!'

38:88 You will most certainly come to know what it informs of,  after a time (appointed for you).
