The Originator

Faatir | Sura # 35 | 45 verses | Makkan

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate and Most Merciful

35:1 All praise is for Allah, the Creator of the heavens and the earth, Who has made angels with 2, 3 or 4 (pairs of) wings as Messengers. He adds to creation as He wills. Surely, Allah has power over all things.

35:2 There is none who can take away the favors He has bestowed on people; and there is none, apart from Him, to restore what He has withheld. He is the Almighty, All Wise.

35:3 (O' Mankind) Remember the Grace of Allah upon you! Is there any creator other than Allah who provides for you from the heaven and the earth? There is no one worthy of worship but He. So (reflect upon) what lies are you inventing?

35:4 And if they deny you (O' Apostle ﷺ, it is not new), surely Apostles were denied before you. And to Allah all matters return (for decision).

35:5 O' Mankind! Certainly the promise of Allah is true. Therefore let not the life of this world deceive you nor let the chief deceiver (Satan) deceive you about Allah.

35:6 Surely, Satan is an enemy to you, so take him as an enemy. He only invites his followers so that they may become (his co-inmates) in the blazing Fire.

35:7 Those who disbelieve will have severe punishment, while those who believe and act good will have forgiveness and great reward.

35:8 Are those,  whose evil deeds are made appealing to them so they consider these evil deeds as good  (like those who are rightly guided and feel good about their righteous deeds)? (It is) certainly Allah (Who) leaves astray whoever He wills, and guides whoever He wills.  So (O' Prophet ﷺ) do not grieve yourself to death over them.   Surely Allah is aware of what they do.

35:9 It is Allah who sends the winds, which lift the clouds, which We then drive to a dead land and thereby bring the earth to life after its death.   Such is the Resurrection.

Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) is explaining how Resurrection takes place by giving the example of the dead land on which nothing can be grown. However, when the rain falls, it becomes alive again and everything starts growing on it all over again.

Resurrection of human beings is simpler than the above. When the trumpet will be blown the second time, what Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) will do is, He will say 'Be' (كُنْ), and all people will come into being instantly.

It is in Quran - إِنَّمَا أَمْرُهُ إِذَا أَرَادَ شَيْئًا أَن يَقُولَ لَهُ كُن فَيَكُونُ [ When Allah intends to create something, He commands 'Be', and instantly it comes into existence]. (Yaseen - 82)

All of them will be provided with new bodies as per the requirement of that day and they all will be gathered at one place to answer for their deeds.

Even when we die, we are transferred to 'the world after death'. We enter in that world with a new body as per the requirement of that world. Our physical body that was provided to us for our stay in this world is buried into earth. This body often gets decomposed and become part of dust.

I have written a book titled 'The Life after Death' providing detailed information in this context.

35:10 The one who covets (and strives for) honor and glory (should know that) the honor and might belong entirely to Allah. The worthy word of prayer ascends up to reach Him. The righteous deeds make it rise. As for those who plot evil, they will suffer a severe punishment. And the plotting of such (people˺) is doomed (to fail).

People get involved in all kinds of corruption and dishonesty to climb on the ladder of wealth and power in this world and feel proud about it. Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) is saying that the honor and might belongs only to Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ). And if you want honor and success in this world and in Hereafter, the only way is to have right belief and do good deeds.

35:11 And (it is) Allah (Who) created you from dust, then (developed you) from a sperm-drop, then made you into pairs. No female ever conceives or delivers without His knowledge.  And no one’s life is made long or cut short but is (written) in a Record.  That is certainly easy for Allah.

35:12 The two bodies of water are not alike: one is fresh, palatable, and pleasant to drink and the other is salty and bitter. Yet from them both,  you eat tender food and extract ornaments to wear. And you see the ships sailing their way through both, so you may seek His bounty and be grateful (to Him).

35:13 He merges the night into the day and the day into the night,, and He has made the sun and the moon to serve you; each one follows its course for an appointed term. Such is Allah, your Lord; His is the kingdom; and those to whom you pray besides Him, do not even own a thread of a date-stone.

35:14 You pray to them, but they do not hear your call; and even if they heard you, they could not answer your prayer; and on the Day of Resurrection they will deny you having worshiped them. None can acquaint you (with the reality) as He, who is informed of everything (Allah).

35:15 O' Mankind! It is you who stand in need of Allah, while Allah  is (absolutely independent), Self-Sufficient and Praiseworthy.

35:16 If He willed, He could eliminate you and produce a new creation (in your place).

35:17 And that is not difficult for Allah (at all).

35:18 No bearer of burdens will bear the burdens of another. And if a sin-burdened person cries for help with his burden, none of it will be carried even by a close relative. You (O Prophet  ﷺ) can only warn those who stand in awe of their Lord without seeing Him and establish Salah. Whoever purifies themselves, they only do so for their own good.  And to Allah is the final return (of everyone).

35:19 The blind and the seeing are not alike,

35:20 nor are the depth of darkness and the light);

35:21 nor are the (chilly) shade and the (genial - gracious) heat of the sun,

35:22 nor are alike those that are living and those that are dead, Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) can make any, that He wills, to hear, but you (O’ Prophet - صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) cannot make those hear who are  in graves.

The above verse refers to Makkan pagans who are referred to 'as dead people' because they do not have the light of Iman in their hearts. It is important to note that the believers can hear during this life and in Hereafter because their faculties of hearing, talking, life, etc., remain intact in both the lives. The problem is with disbelievers who can neither hear the call to Iman in this world nor can they hear anything in the Hereafter as they are subjected to torment in their graves and beyond.

Wahhabis/Salafis/Deobandis/Kharijis and their like minded groups impose the above verse on Prophets/Sahabah and Awliya Allah and scare innocent Muslims from visiting their graves for barakah saying that they cannot hear you.

It is in Hadith - Abdullah bin Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) considered the Khawarij (and their like minded groups, Salafis, Deobandis, Wahhabis etc.) the worst of Allah's creation, and said, 'Verily they take the verses that were revealed about unbelievers and use them against the believers. (Bukhari)

To know the meaning of the above verse, let us study 3 verses, immediately before this verse. We have provided below all 4 verses together.

It is in Quran –وَمَا يَسْتَوِي الْأَعْمَىٰ وَالْبَصِيرُ - وَلَا الظُّلُمَاتُ وَلَا النُّورُ - وَلَا الظِّلُّ وَلَا الْحَرُورُ - وَمَا يَسْتَوِي الْأَحْيَاءُ وَلَا الْأَمْوَاتُ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُسْمِعُ مَن يَشَاءُ ۖ وَمَا أَنتَ بِمُسْمِعٍ مَّن فِي الْقُبُورِ [ The blind and the seeing are not alike (verse 19). Nor are the depth of darkness and the light (verse 20). Nor are the (chilly) shade and the (genial - gracious) heat of the sun (verse 21). Nor are alike those that are living and those that are dead, Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) can make any, that He wills, to hear, but you (O’ Prophet ﷺ) cannot make those hear (accept Iman) who are in graves (verse 22) (Fater - 19-22)

Verse 19 - ‘The blind and the seeing are not alike’.

This has reference to Makkan polytheists. Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) is referring them as blind because they do not have the light of Iman in their hearts.

Verse 20 - ‘The depth of darkness and light is not alike’.

This means, the disbelievers' hearts are buried in the depth of darkness, therefore they cannot be compared with Muslims whose hearts are enlightened with Iman in both the worlds.

Verse 21 - 'The chilly shade and gracious heat of the sun cannot be alike'.

Since, Makkan pagans hearts are buried in the depth of darkness, it is referred as 'chilly shade' which cannot benefit from the heat of the sun. Meaning, the polytheists of Makka are not benefited from the gracious heat of Iman that is emanating from Prophet Mohammad

Verse 22 has three parts.

Part (22.1) - ‘The living and dead are not alike’.

This means, the polytheists of Makka and Muslims are not the same. Muslims are referred as living beings because of their Iman. As Makkan pagans' hearts are buried in the depth of darkness because of their Idol worship, they are referred as 'dead people'.

Part (22.2) - 'Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) can make any that He wills to hear'.

Allah Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) says that He has the omnipotence (power) to make anyone hear - meaning, He can give Iman to anyone he wishes.

Part (22.3) - (O’ Prophet ﷺ) you cannot make those dead bodies listen that are in graves’.

This has reference to the life and death of disbelievers. They are dead bodies in this world and inmates of Hell in Hereafter. It is evident that the entire discussion is about Makkan Mushrikeen whose hearts are buried in the depth of darkness because of their Idol worship. The graves of Muslims are not dark. They are illuminated by the light of Iman.

(And they who reject Our verses ( and those who reject the real meanings and/or misinterpret them and draw wrong meanings/conclusions from them) are deaf and dumb, in utter darkness; whom Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) pleases He causes to err and whom He pleases He puts on the right path). (Al-An'aam - 39).

(ii) It is in Hadith - Prophet Mohammad (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said: 'He who remembers his Lord and he who does not, are like the living and the dead (Muslim).

(iii) It is in Hadith - Abu Musa (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) narrates that the Prophet (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) said, “He who remembers his Lord and he who does not are like the living and the dead.'

(iv) It is in Hadith - Abu Musa (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) narrates that the Prophet (صلی اللہ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) said, 'The house in which Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) is remembered and the one in which Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) is not remembered are like the living and the dead.']

35:23 You (O' Apostle  ﷺ) are not, but a Warner.

35:24 Certainly We have sent you (O' Apostle  ﷺ) with the Truth as a bearer of glad tidings and as a Warner, for there has not been a nation which has not had a Warner.

35:25 If they deny you, so did those before them (who denied their Apostles). Their Apostles came to them with clear proofs, divine Books, and enlightening Scriptures.

35:26 Then I seized the ones who denied the truth, and how (terrible) was My punishment.

35:27 Do you not see that Allah sends down rain from the sky with which We bring forth fruits of various colors? Similarly, in the mountains there are streaks of various shades of rocks, including white, red,  jet-black.

35:28 And likewise, men, beasts, and cattle have various colors. It is only those among His servants who have knowledge, fear Allah. Surely, Allah is Almighty, and Most Forgiving.

35:29 Surely those who recite the Book of Allah,  establish Salah, and do charity from what We have provided them, secretly and openly, expect for a recompense that will never fail.

35:30 He will give them their recompense in full and give them more out of His Grace.  Surely, He is Most Forgiving, and Appreciates (those who are grateful).

35:31 The Book We have revealed to you (O Prophet ﷺ) is the truth, confirming what came before it.   Surely Allah is  aware of His servants and Sees every thing.

35:32 Then We gave the book (the Quran) as an inheritance to those of Our servants (Muslims) whom We have chosen. Among them there are some who wrong their own selves, some of them follow a middle course, and some of them are foremost in good deeds by Allah's blessings. That is the great favor (indeed).

The above verse categorizes the Muslims in three groups, as follows.

(i) The people of Iman, but who commit wrong on their own selves (wrongdoers/sinners).

In the above category, the sin or wrongdoing is related to deeds that are not covered under the purview of Iman. Iman is an straight forward issue related with heart. There is no scope of deviation in it. It is because, a person who does not have correct faith (Sahih Iman), and acts according to his wrongful/deviant faith or self desires that come under the purview of apostasy / polytheism / hypocrisy / blasphemy, etc., then, as per Islamic fiqh, he is not treated as Muslim, even though he claims himself to be one. Wrongful beliefs of all deviant sects are covered in it.

(ii) Those who follow middle course. Meaning, they are people of Iman but are not outstanding in good deeds.

(iii) The people of Iman who are also foremost in good deeds. Surely, Awliya Allah are covered in this category.

In all the above categories, Iman is the foremost requirement. There is no compromise on Iman. Your salvation depends on Sahih Iman.

Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) says that the people of Sahih Iman, belonging to all the above categories of Muslims have been given the Quran as an inheritance. They are believers and will be treated as such on the day of Resurrection.

As far as believing sinners are concerned, it is for Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) to either forgive or punish them to the extent of their bad deeds. Eventually they will be allowed to enter Paradise by the mediation of Prophet Mohammad

It is in Quran - قُلْ يَا عِبَادِيَ الَّذِينَ أَسْرَفُوا عَلَىٰ أَنفُسِهِمْ لَا تَقْنَطُوا مِن رَّحْمَةِ اللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ جَمِيعًا ۚ إِنَّهُ هُوَ الْغَفُورُ الرَّحِيمُ [ Say, 'O My servants who have transgressed against themselves (by sinning), do not despair of the Mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is All Forgiving, Most Merciful. ] (Az-Zumar - 53)

35:33 They will enter the gardens of Eden where they will be adorned with bracelets of gold and pearls and their garments will be silk therein.

35:34 And they will say, 'Praise be to Allah, Who has kept away from us all (causes of) sorrow. Our Lord is indeed All Forgiving, and appreciates those who are grateful.'

35:35 'He has settled us in the everlasting Home out of His favor, where no weariness or fatigue will touch us.'

35:36 But those who disbelieve, there will be fire of Hell for them. Neither it (fire) will be completed on them so that they die, nor shall its punishment be lightened for them. Thus We do pay back every disbeliever!

35:37 They will cry therein : 'Our Lord! Get us out, (from now) we shall do righteous deeds and shall not repeat that (evil deeds) which we used to do.' (It will be told) : 'Did We not give you lives long enough so that whoever would, could receive warning therein? And the Warner came to you. So taste (the punishment for the evil you did), there is no helper for the wrongdoers.'

35:38 Allah knows all the unseen of the heavens and earth; He (also) knows what is in the hearts.

35:39 It is He Who has made you vicegerent on the earth.  (Disregarding this high favor of Allah) Whoever disbelieves, bears the burden of his disbelief; and for the disbelievers their disbelief does not increase anything except the wrath of their Lord.  The disbelievers do not gain anything except that their denial will only contribute to their loss.

35:40 Ask them (O Prophet  ﷺ) : 'Have you ever considered about your associate gods,  to whom you call upon besides Allah? Show me anything that they have created on earth!  Or what is their share in the creation of the heavens? Or have We given them (the disbelievers) a Book from which they derive the provision for shirk? Nay, in fact the wrongdoers promise each other nothing but delusions.

35:41 Allah keeps a firm hold on the heavens and earth, preventing them from vanishing away.   And if they vanished no one could then keep hold of them.   Certainly He is Most Forbearing, All Forgiving.

35:42 And (before the advent of Prophet Mohammad  ﷺ) they swore by Allah their most binding oath that if a Warner ever comes to them, they would be more guided than any of the nations (before them).   (But) when the Warner (the Prophet ﷺ) did come to them, they turned further away,

35:43 behaving arrogantly in the land and plotting evil.  But evil plotting only backfires on those who plot.  Are they awaiting anything but the fate of those (destroyed) before? You will find no change in the way of Allah, nor will you find it altered (for some people).

35:44 Have they not traveled through the land to see what was the end of those (who were destroyed) before them? They were far superior in might. But there is nothing that can escape Allah in the heavens or on the earth. He is certainly All Knowing, Most Powerful.

35:45 If Allah were to punish people (instantly) for what they have committed, He would not have left a single living being on earth.  But He delays them for an appointed term.  And when their time arrives, they surely will realize that Allah is All Seer of His servants.
