Imam Abdullah Ibn Abdur Rahman Ad-Darimi (عبد الله بن عبد الرحمن الدارمي), (797–869 CE) was a Hadith scholar from Banu Darim, whose ancestors were from Banu Tamim. Ad-Darimi said, ‘I was born in the same year Abdullah ibn Al-Mubarak (رحمة اللہ علیه) died, and Abdullah ibn Al-Mubarak died in 181 AH (797 CE).
Ad-Darimi narrated Ahadith from Yazid Ibn Harun, Abdullah Ibn Awn and others. Also, many well-known scholars like Muslim and Abu Dawood narrated Ahadith from him.
SCHOLARLY VIEWS
(i) Muhammad bin Ibrahim al-Faqih As-Samarqandi said, ‘I was with Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal (d. 241 H.) and Ad-Darimi was mentioned. He said: ‘that person is a Leader. Disbelief was presented to me, and I rejected it. Worldly life was presented to him, and he rejected’.
(ii) Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Numair said, ‘Abdullah bin Abdur Rahman surpassed us in scrupulousness and piety’.
(iii) Muhammad bin Abdullah al-Mukharrami said, ‘O People of Khurasan, as long as Abdullah bin Abdur Rahman is among you, do not be preoccupied with other than him’.
(iv) Abu Hatim Ar-Razi said, ‘Abdullah bin Abdur Rahman is the Imam of the people of his time’.
(v) Muhammad bin Ibrahim Ash-Shirazi said, ‘Ad-Darimi was upon the utmost intellect and religion such that he was taken as an example when it comes to judgement, rulings, study of Hadith, memorization, Ibadah, and asceticism. He made the Knowledge of Hadith and narrations prominent in Samarqand and he removed lies from it. He was a complete Jurist, and a Hadith Scholar.'
(vi) Ad-Daraqutni said, ‘He is reliable, well-known’.
(vii) Adh-Dhahabi said, ‘Ad-Darimi was a pillar from the pillars of the Religion. Abu Hatim Ar-Razi and many others declared him reliable.’
DEATH
Imam Ad-Darimi died in 255 AH (869 CE) on the Day of Tarwiyah after Asr and was buried on the Day of Arafah on a Friday. He was seventy-five years old at the time of death.
WORKS
Khateeb al-Baghdadi (d. 463 H.) said, Imam Ad-Darimi wrote the Musnad, a Tafseer, and a Jaami. This was also mentioned by other Scholars and Islamic researchers have concluded that the ‘Musnad and Jaami’ refer to the same book which is actually Sunan Ad-Darimi. His other works did not survive.
